Voges helps Australia take series 6-1

Australia rounded off their international summer in style with a commanding 57-run victory at Perth

Australia rounded off their international summer in style with a commanding 57-run victory in Perth. It wasn’t a high-quality match, with the exception of the batting from Adam Voges and David Hussey, as a long season drew to a close with two patched-up sides on show. However, Australia’s depth came to the fore again as Voges hit a career-best 80 before England’s mentally-finished top order was blown away to end hopes of a face-saving win.Nothing will compensate for the crushing loss in the Ashes series, but Australia’s resurgent one-day form has suggested a fourth consecutive World Cup title isn’t out of reach, especially if key players return from injury. Even taking into account England’s own injury problems and declining form, the home side’s performances have boded well in the absence of Ricky Ponting, Mike Hussey and Nathan Hauritz – all key figures in the one-day side.During the Test matches, Australia’s reserves did not appear up to international standard, but the team has not retained its No.1 one-day ranking by luck. Their pace attack is rapid, if wayward at times – they matched England’s wide tally of 19 – while the lack of a matchwinning spinner isn’t so harshly felt. Meanwhile, the batting is packed with stroke-makers.Two were on show here after the top order wobbled to 4 for 102 before Hussey and Voges added 95 in 13 overs. This could be a one-off opportunity for Voges but if an injury replacement is needed for the World Cup, and Shaun Marsh doesn’t recover, he might have put his name ahead of Callum Ferguson, who edged James Anderson to slip for 15.Once Australia had posted a competitive total it was always unlikely that the visitors would be able to dig deep enough to make it a contest with the prospect of their flight home tomorrow evening. Mentally, a number of the players have long since been in those aircraft seats.Andrew Strauss has plenty of reasons to be feeling weary after arriving in Australia on October 29 and it was a tired shot that ended his series when he was very late against Shaun Tait. The bat had barely come down when the ball knocked back the off stump. Steve Davies, back opening after the reshuffle caused by Eoin Morgan’s injury, was unconvincing in his short stay until flapping at Doug Bollinger to complete an unhappy few weeks.Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen briefly consolidated but there was never any great sense of permanency even from the in-form Trott. He was drawn into a flat-footed drive against Johnson which sent a thick edge to first slip, then Pietersen’s uncertain stay ended with a drive to backward point. Even taking into account the looseness of England’s batting this was the good Mitchell Johnson and he added a third when Ian Bell carved down to third man.At 5 for 64 the game was over. Matt Prior played some handsome drives before giving Jason Krejza his maiden one-day wicket to end another unfulfilled innings and Michael Yardy battled hard to reduce the margin of defeat with his highest ODI score. But it had ceased to matter in the wider context.England’s makeshift bowling attack had done a decent job through the first half of the innings as the quicks started well and Yardy picked up two, but in a familiar pattern the work of the front line bowlers was squandered. Hussey and Voges took advantage with some positive strokeplay as they dispatched the loose deliveries on offer. Hussey had been given a life on 4 when Luke Wright dropped a return chance that should have been held and reached his fifty from 44 balls, which included a pulled six off Yardy. With his boundary-clearing ability and a Powerplay to come he could have cut loose during the final 10 overs, but was squared up by Liam Plunkett and got a leading edge to backward point. Plunkett ended with 2 for 49, which was an impressive effort considering that he only arrived in the country three days ago following a 40-hour journey from the Caribbean.Voges, though, remained to reach fifty off 45 deliveries, regularly showing his strength square of the wicket and rapid running. Although the boundaries dried up he placed the ball well to ensure 34 came off the last three overs, but Australia were helped by England’s waywardness. That was symptomatic of a team not fully focussed and the batting effort was further evidence that minds were elsewhere. If they want to perform at the World Cup there isn’t much time to refocus, but Australia can leave for the subcontinent this week in good spirits.

Former ICL players named in IPL

A slew of former ICL players, as well as a few who turned in successful Ranji Trophy seasons, have found themselves picked in the final IPL squads for the third season starting next month

Cricinfo staff12-Feb-2010A slew of former ICL players, as well as a few who turned in successful Ranji Trophy seasons, have found themselves picked in the final IPL squads for the third season starting next month. The squads can be tweaked at any time during the season with the inclusion, at 24 hours’ notice, of any players on a franchise’s books – which explains the exclusion of big names such as Shane Watson and Shane Bond.Kings XI Punjab have signed up four domestic players – the medium-pacers Love Ablish and Shalabh Srivastava, batsman Manvinder Bisla and allrounder Reetinder Sodhi. Sodhi, who played 18 ODIs for India, and Srivastava, a left-arm pacer, were recently admitted back into the domestic fold after they severed ties with the unofficial ICL. Ablish, who plays for Punjab on the domestic circuit, was the third highest wicket-taker in this season’s Ranji Super League. Bisla, the Haryana-born wicketkeeper who plays for Jammu & Kashmir, was part of IPL champions Deccan Chargers’ squad in 2009.Commenting on the selection, Punjab coach Tom Moody said: “They not only bring extra zeal to excel but also add fresh talent to the field with their exemplary ability with the ball and bat. Their zest to learn will ensure KXIP reaches newer heights and is ready to face any competition this season.”Kings XI Punjab: Kumar Sangakkara (capt/wk), Brett Lee, Adrian Barath, Vikramjeet Malik, Bipul Sharma, Manvinder Bisla, Yusuf Abdullah, Karan Goel, Ravi Bopara, Irfan Pathan, Ramesh Powar, Shalabh Srivastava, Mohammad Kaif, Love Ablish, Amanpreet Singh, James Hopes, Reetinder Singh Sodhi, Yash Gandhi, Shaun Marsh, Mahela Jayawardene, Yuvraj Singh, Sreesanth, Piyush Chawla.S Sriram, the batsman who played eight ODIs for India as well as in the ICL, has been named in Royal Challengers Bangalore’s squad. The other more notable change in the Bangalore squad was the inclusion of Steven Smith, the Australia legspinner, in place of Jesse Ryder. Ryder, the New Zealand batsman, has been out of action since the ICC Champions League last September with a groin problem that has troubled him for nearly a year. Smith has made a name for himself in Twenty20 cricket having helped New South Wales win the inaugural Champions League title in India last October. Players who have been drafted in include the Saurashtra opener, Chirag Pathak, who hit a brisk century in the Duleep final. Also named in the Kolkata squad were Cheteshwar Pujara and Ganapathi Vignesh, the hard-hitting opener from Tamil Nadu. PSG player ratings vs Real Sociedad: Kylian Mbappe is inevitable, but Bradley Barcola proves there is life without him as Parisians take Champions League stride

The star man took centre stage as usual, but his protege showed there is hope for the future as Luis Enrique's side established a first-leg lead

Kylian Mbappe was the protagonist, but young Bradley Barcola showed that Paris Saint-Germain might just survive without him as the Parisians' wingers grabbed the goals in a 2-0 first-leg win over Real Sociedad on Wednesday night.

Luis Enrique's side endured a disappointing opening period, but a controlled second half saw them ease past their Spanish visitors.

The Parisians had their chances in the first half; Mbappe scuffed his effort after running through on goal, before Ousmane Dembele lashed a shot into the side netting. La Real came closest before half-time though, with Mikel Merino rattling the bar from 30 yards out.

Mbappe opened the scoring early in the second half, darting in at the far post to meet a Marquinhos flick-on. Barcola added the second soon after, skipping past his man down the left before threading an effort through the goalkeeper's legs. Mbappe came within inches of the third with a driven strike from long range. The defence did its work, too – La Real didn't put a single shot on target all evening.

This wasn't impressive at first, but a strong second half has seen Luis Enrique's men take a significant stride towards achieving their unlikely Champions League dream.

GOAL rates PSG's players from Parc des Princes…

GettyGoalkeeper & Defence

Gianluigi Donnarumma (6/10):

Made a couple of neat saves, and was otherwise untroubled. Surprising that he had such a quiet night.

Achraf Hakimi (6/10):

Offered legs but not much quality down the right. Most of La Real's threat came from the other wing.

Marquinhos (7/10):

Assisted Mbappe's opener, won his aerial duels, and kept the ball moving. A commanding presence.

Danilo Pereira (8/10):

Completed all but four of his passes, didn't lose a 50/50 and looked assured at the back. He might be Marquinhos' ideal partner.

Lucas Beraldo (7/10):

Preferred to Lucas Hernandez, and held down the left side effectively. Kept Take Kubo quiet for the most part.

Warren Zaire-Emery (6/10):

A hardworking shift in the middle. Didn't do much in possession, but went about his defensive work diligently.

Vitinha (7/10):

A buzzing presence in central midfield – especially after the break. Won the ball back with regularity, made things happen in tight spaces.

Fabian Ruiz (7/10):

Tidy on the left side of a midfield three. Connected with Mbappe effectively. Assisted Barcola's goal. A showing that made a case for more minutes.

GettyAttack

Ousmane Dembele (5/10):

Fired one into the side-netting in a waste of one of the best chances of the first half. Didn't have much of an impact in 90 disappointing minutes.

Kylian Mbappe (8/10):

Missed a good chance early on after being sent through on goal. Grabbed PSG's first with a tidy finish. Rattled the bar shortly after, and whipped one just over. Scary when he's in this kind of mood.

Bradley Barcola (8/10):

A fantastic shift on the left. Did his defensive work effectively, competed for 50/50s, and took his goal wonderfully. His best game in a PSG shirt.

Marco Asensio (6/10):

Had a couple of efforts on goal, and kept things flowing on the break.

Lucas Hernandez (5/10):

Tasked with handling Kubo – which he didn't do too effectively.

Randal Kolo Muani (6/10):

Almost scored a wonderful third.

Luis Enrique (7/10):

Made a few interesting calls, including selecting Barcola ahead of Kolo Muani, and Beraldo over Hernandez. PSG were poor in the first half, and much improved in the second. Not perfect, but he will take the 2-0 lead.

Sri Lanka seek answers against in-form India

Match facts

Tuesday, March 1, 2016
Start time 1930 local (1330 GMT)Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan are likely to be reunited at the top of the order for India•BCCI

Big Picture

India, seven wins from their last eight T20s, are fresh from a high-octane triumph against their greatest rivals. Sri Lanka, having lost six of their last eight T20s, have been comprehensively beaten by a team they used to lord it over. It seems like a distant memory but Sri Lanka did defeat India in a World T20 final, in the team’s last bout at this venue. That will seem more distant still, if Sri Lanka continue to play as they recently have.India’s batting outlasted the sublime Mohammad Amir spell on Saturday, but it was their bowling that set up victory. The same attack has torn through Sri Lanka’s brittle batting order in recent weeks. They had Sri Lanka 16 for 3, then eventually 127 all out, in Ranchi, then blew Sri Lanka away for 82 in Visakhapatnam. R Ashwin hasn’t collected any big hauls in this tournament so far, but going by his record against Sri Lanka over the past year, he will expect to buff his stats a little on Tuesday night. Seamers Ashish Nehra and Jasprit Bumrah continued to settle nicely into their roles. As for Sri Lanka’s woes – where even to begin? Lasith Malinga appears unlikely to play again, the cellotape holding his body together seemingly giving out. There is still some quality in that bowling attack, with Rangana Herath, Angelo Mathews and Dushmantha Chameera, but maybe their strengths are not being maximised. The thing with Sri Lanka at present is that their batting is so fragile they need their bowlers to dominate. If opposition reaches a par score, they have effectively scored too many for Sri Lanka. On one front, at least, there seems to be a sliver of hope for the men south of the Palk Strait. The strip awaiting them in Mirpur seems to have a lot of grass on the eve of the match. That should bring to mind the surface in Pune, where Sri Lanka did defeat India. Unless they get their bowling plans in order though, even that match will begin to look like ancient history.

Form guide

Sri Lanka LWLLW

Watch out for

If Angelo Mathews‘ batting doesn’t get you, his bowling usually will. Coming off an ambling approach, Mathews delivers only a gentle pace, but it is uncannily effective. Last time these teams met – in that final – Mathews shared the new ball with Nuwan Kulasekara, and claimed tidy figures of 1 for 25 from his full quota. If the pitch tomorrow offers seam movement, he could reap even better returns.Like Mathews, Virat Kohli had missed that bilateral series between the two sides, but has made his presence felt at the Asia Cup. He had close calls against Amir, but survived long enough to see his team to safety. Kohli generally loves playing Sri Lanka. Even if Malinga does play, no one has dominated him like Kohli. With so many weapons in that India top order, they are not reliant on Kohli’s success, but he does seem the likeliest batsman to prosper against this attack.

Teams news

Shikhar Dhawan has recovered from the niggle that kept him out of the previous match. He will likely open again alongside Rohit Sharma, who has also been cleared to play after sustaining a bruised toe, courtesy of an Amir yorker.India (probable): 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Suresh Raina, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 MS Dhoni (wk & capt), 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 R Aswhin, 10 Ashish Nehra, 11 Jasprit BumrahIf Malinga remains unavailable due to a knee condition, Sri Lanka may think about giving a misfiring Thisara Perera another match. They have no other seam-bowling options in the 15. They may also consider playing an extra batsman.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Milinda Siriwardana, 4 Dasun Shanaka, 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Chamara Kapugedara, 7 Shehan Jayasuriya, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Rangana Herath, 10 Dushmantha Chameera, 11 Lasith Malinga (capt)/ Thisara Perera

Pitch and conditions

The Mirpur pitch may have something in it for the seamers. The weather is expected to remain good for the encounter.

Stats and trivia

  • Virat Kohli has crossed fifty in each of his two T20 innings against Sri Lanka so far, making 68 and 77.
  • Angelo Mathews has taken 10 wickets in an innings’ opening T20 over – more than any other bowler.
  • In nine T20s against India, Sri Lanka have lost five and won four

Gillespie backs Bayliss for England job

Jason Gillespie said that if it had been up to him to choose from the candidates on England cricket director Andrew Strauss’s shortlist then he would also have picked Trevor Bayliss

Jon Culley25-May-2015Jason Gillespie took the news that he has apparently been snubbed for the vacant England head coach’s job with typically jocular sangfroid and said that if it had been up to him to choose from the candidates on England cricket director Andrew Strauss’s shortlist then he would also have picked Trevor Bayliss. He said that in his final telephone conversation with Strauss before play began on the second morning of Yorkshire’s match at Taunton he had been told only that there was a “preferred candidate” and had been given to understand that his fellow Australian Bayliss was the ECB’s choice to succeed Peter Moores. But he exonerated Strauss from any blame in what appears to have been another embarrassing leak, with news that Bayliss had accepted the job gathering pace even with no official announcement.”I knew before the news came out,” Gillespie said. “That’s one thing the ECB may need to work on because things do seem to be coming out but I spoke to Straussy early this morning and one thing I was impressed with is that Andrew was able to contact me and let me know. So I’ve absolutely no problem with that.”He fully endorsed Bayliss as the best man for the position following his successes in Australia with New South Wales and the Sydney Sixers, with Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL and with Sri Lanka, whom he took to the 2011 World Cup final.”England wanted a coach with a proven track record, and if it is Trevor, as it appears likely, his track record’s absolutely unbelievable,” Gillespie said. “I’ve got absolutely no qualms about that. If I put myself in Andrew’s shoes, I’d probably make the same decision if I’m honest.”He is a very good operator and I’ve only heard good things about him. Farby [England’s interim head coach Paul Farbrace] speaks very highly of him from the time he worked with him in Sri Lanka so I can’t say anything negative. I wish him well.”Gillespie, the 40-year-old former Australia bowler, admitted he would have almost certainly taken the job had it been offered but found plenty of positives to balance his disappointment.”I have always seen it as a win-win from my end,” he said. “I have got two great jobs – here with Yorkshire and with Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash. If I had have got offered an international job I would have had to have seriously considered it, that’s for sure. Either way, I don’t see any negatives.”My thoughts were: ‘what is the worst that can happen?’ Go and sit for an interview, which is another experience for me. I can only be better for that, I saw I had nothing to lose.”Straussy said to me, ‘You interviewed very well, but we have made a decision that we are going to go with another candidate.’ I said, that’s fine, mate. I wish you well. You’ve got to believe in your decisions and this is what your job is.”Gillespie admitted there were elements of the job as it was presented that were not ideal, but that the ECB’s refusal to readmit Kevin Pietersen to the fold was not one of them.”They made it very clear they’ve got a stance with Kev,” he said. “I didn’t have a problem with it. That certainly wasn’t any issue.”Where he might have had second thoughts was over the length of time he would have been required to stay away from his young family. “It is a massive commitment and you are away from home a lot. It would have been something I would have had to consider, but I think if I did get offered it I would have jumped at it.”

PCB accepts Moin casino explanation

Moin Khan has apologised for visiting a casino in New Zealand while with the Pakistan team at the World Cup but there will be no action taken against him, according to the PCB chairman, Shaharyar Khan

Moin Khan has apologised for visiting a casino in New Zealand while with the Pakistan team at the World Cup but there will be no action taken against him, according to the PCB chairman, Shaharyar Khan.Moin, who is his country’s chief selector, was called home after the incident, when he was photographed during a night out at the casino two days before Pakistan’s Group B game against West Indies. Gambling is illegal in Pakistan but Moin said he had only been there to dine with his family and the PCB has accepted he was not in violation of its disciplinary code.”I had a meeting with Moin for 30 to 40 minutes and I asked him to clarify what exactly happened there,” Shaharyar said”He said he already gave a statement that he accepted that it was inappropriate to have a dinner in casino. He also said he apologised for his visit that created an uproar but he didn’t go for any gambling there. It was merely a dinner along with his wife and friends. He has apologised to us and to the nation.”I understand that Moin didn’t violate any disciplinary code but still he is apologising for his visit to a casino, which he realised was inappropriate and wrong. His statement is not contrary to our investigation so the matter is now closed.”Moin was not travelling with the team in an official capacity and is not expected to return to Australia and New Zealand. Pakistan won for the first time in their third match at the World Cup, against Zimbabwe on Sunday, after defeats to India and West Indies. They next play UAE on Wednesday.

Big wins for Hyderabad, Andhra

A round-up of the Ranji Trophy Group C matches on January 8, 2015

ScorecardRohan Prem’s century salvaged a draw for Kerala•ESPNcricinfo LtdAndhra needed just 10 overs to wrap up a nine-wicket victory against Jharkhand in Vizianagaram. Set a modest target of 47, Andhra rode on twenties from their openers Prasanth Kumar (20) and Srikar Bharat (25) to complete the chase in less than an hour. Left-arm medium-pacer Cheepurapalli Stephen, who turned the game around with a six-wicket haul in the second innings, was adjudged the Man of the Match.
ScorecardA four-wicket haul from Chama Milind helped Hyderabad complete a nine-wicket win against Tripura in Agartala, their first outright victory of the season. Tripura, who began the day at 240 for 4 still 67 runs adrift, could only add 111 to that score. Rakesh Solanki (85) and Rajesh Banik (41) put up a 126-run stand for the fifth wicket, but once that partnership was sniped by Ravi Kiran, Tripura’s lower and middle-order batsmen failed to produce a threatening score. Milind (4 for 83) and Akash Bhandari (2 for 57) cleaned up the tail, as Tripura were bundled out for 351. It meant Hyderabad needed just 45 for victory, and the team chased down that total in 6.5 overs.
ScorecardRohan Prem’s seventh first-class hundred meant that Kerala survived the whole day to defy Himachal Pradesh and secure a draw in Dharamsala. Kerala were 61 for 4 when the day began and still needed another 260 runs to avoid an innings defeat. However, Prem, coming in at No.7, batted for more than six hours to make an unbeaten 101 off 276 balls, with 16 fours. Prem spent 72 overs at the crease in the company of Sachin Baby (30) and Raiphi Gomez (15), as Goa ended the day at 252 for 8. Rishi Dhawan and Bipul Sharma snared two scalps each, but Himachal ran out of time before collecting the final two wickets which would’ve given them their third win of the season.
