Edwards upgrade: Wolves looking at hiring "one of the best men" in football

Wolverhampton Wanderers fans will already be contemplating the return of Championship football to Molineux next season.

Indeed, the miserable Old Gold are currently sat at the bottom of the Premier League pile on a pitiful two points, which culminated in the dismissal of Vitor Pereira, who had managed to turn around Wolves’ fortunes when coming in mid-way through the 2024/25 season.

Unfortunately, in the here and now, Pereira couldn’t arrest the worrying slide, with the West Midlands outfit now on the hunt for a successor who can somehow lift the downbeat side off the very foot of the top-flight.

Gary O’Neil has already turned down the opportunity to come back to his old stomping ground as a dramatic saviour, with Wolves now having to look at alternative targets.

There have been several different names linked to the Molineux vacancy since Pereira was put out of his misery after a 3-0 defeat away at Fulham.

Rob Edwards has consistently been tipped to leave promotion-chasing Middlesbrough behind in the Championship to return to the side he lined up for as a player. At the same time, Wolves have also utilised their well-known Portuguese connections, with ex-Benfica boss Rui Vitoria allegedly on their radar.

Sky Sports News’ Lyall Thomas has fired back, though, to state that either Edwards or Vitoria replacing Pereira is considered “unlikely”, with Erik ten Hag also a shout that has been dismissed, as Wolves head into their next league encounter with youth team duo James Collins and Richard Walker at the helm.

A decision will soon have to be made, as Wolves fight a losing battle against the drop, with one name that Thomas hasn’t dismissed, still perhaps in the running as a clear upgrade on the Boro boss.

Why Wolves target would be an Edwards upgrade

Before delving deeper into why this alternative target would be an upgrade on Edwards, it does have to be said that the 42-year-old did a commendable job the last time he was in the top-flight with Luton Town.

Indeed, Edwards did make the Hatters a “difficult” team to beat, as were the words of Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta.

But, away from initial admiration, the Championship promotion-winning manager did still take Luton down, with 47 defeats from 103 games in charge of the Kenilworth Road outfit, not exactly music to the ears of those at Molineux who crave a transformative clean slate.

This is where the reappointment of Bruno Lage could be a masterstroke, with reports from Portugal – via Sport Witness – indicating that the 49-year-old is weighing up the possibility of a return to the Black Country, having been on Wolves’ manager shortlist.

Wolves have arguably been on a decline since the one-time Liga Portugal champion left the building, with Lage’s tenth-place finish during the 2021/22 season yet to be bettered by the litany of managers that have come into the Old Gold dug-out since.

Lage also turned the Old Gold into a well-oiled machine when he was at the helm, which they are in dire need of right now, as only 43 goals were leaked across 38 league contests.

His fellow compatriot and ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal would even label his one full campaign in the dug-out as “the best success story in the Premier League”, with Lage even taking the West Midlands titans to the brink of a Champions League spot at one point, having masterminded a 1-0 away win at Manchester United in early 2022.

19 Premier League wins would come his way, subsequently, with Edwards stuck on just six, in stark contrast, from his time at Kenilworth Road.

With Lage favouring a 4-3-3 set-up, too, much like Pereira, the hope will be that Setubal-born boss can get the ball rolling again immediately on his return, having been described as “one of the best men I have met in football” by ex-Wolves skipper Conor Coady.

After all, he fared well last time out when the pressure was on him, having had to replace a modern Molineux great in Nuno Espirito Santo, as the “excellent” head coach – as he was once labelled by rival Premier League manager Thomas Frank – now tries to steer the ship back on course again.

وقال السولية خلال تصريحات عبر قناة الكأس: “النادي الإسماعيلي كان يرفض تمامًا انتقالي إلي النادي الأهلي مباشرة، أنا كانت لدي رغبة في الانتقال للأهلي، رئيس النادي حينها قال أنت لن تستطيع أن تخرج من الإسماعيلي مباشرة للنادي الأهلي، وعليك أن تجلب أي عرض للنادي من خارج مصر وأنا سأوافق عليه”.

وبسؤاله، وإذا وصل لك عرض من الزمالك الآن هل تُفكر في الموافقة، رد لاعب الأهلي السابق: “لا لن أوافق”.

So I will do whatever it takes to improve, to work hard and try to win games for my team,” Raghuvanshi told ESPNcricinfo before the start of the 2025 IPL. “Because that’s what I love doing. After being picked up by KKR at the auction for the 2024 IPL, Raghuvanshi played his maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy season, but had a middling outing. His highest score was 32, and he struck at 116.But in the IPL he made an immediate impact. In the first match he batted in, at the age of 19, he hammered 54 off 27 balls from No. 3 against Delhi Capitals to help KKR get to a mammoth score of 272, in the process becoming the second-youngest player to score a half-century in his maiden IPL innings.He started the knock with back-to-back boundaries off Anrich Nortje, and then reverse-swept medium-pacer Rasikh Salam for a six – the kind of innovation that became his mainstay as the season wore on. He made the No. 3 position his own, despite the presence of bigger stars like Venkatesh Iyer and KKR’s then-captain Shreyas Iyer in the side, and finished the season with 163 runs at a strike rate of 155.23.Unfazed by the prospect of facing the high pace of bowlers like Nortje, or taking on world-class spinners like Axar Patel, Raghuvanshi says he came prepared, not just in terms of technique, but also mentality.”I have asked this question a lot to my coach and with all the big players I have played with: that when a fast bowler or a very good spinner is running in, and he has done a lot in cricket, what goes through your mind? Raghuvanshi: ‘I watch athletes from other sports to learn what I can do to be better’

“So, [when] there was pressure and thoughts that Nortje is bowling to me, I just calmed myself down by saying that everyone just says: watch the ball and play according to the ball. When I told my mind that, it helped a lot and I could just focus on the ball.”And how does he get the confidence to walk out at the highest level and start ramping and reverse-sweeping fast bowlers?”We practised in a way that those shots were just normal run-scoring shots instead of audacious ones,” he said. “And leading up to the tournament, I practised it a lot, so it became natural. So, when I was there in the middle and there was pressure on me, I felt that I could rely on it to score runs.”The man chiefly responsible for Raghuvanshi’s preparation was his childhood coach Abhishek Nayar, who was also KKR’s assistant coach when they signed the young batter on.Raghuvanshi first met Nayar at the age of 11. Soon after, the youngster made the move from Delhi to Mumbai, even staying with Nayar – a mentor on and off the field – for a week.”He saw me play and worked with me and I felt a connection there. I got to learn so much from him in that one-week period when I was in Mumbai for the first time,” Raghuvanshi recalled. “It opened my mind to new things in the game. And ever since, I’ve just tried to learn as much as I can from him and he’s really been helpful in my entire journey.”He’s a great coach on the field and in life too. I think he’s helped me grow as a person as well,” Raghuvanshi said. “He taught me to be a really good person, to be a mature and respectful person off the field, and a smart and hardworking cricketer on the field.”Even before his batting exploits, Raghuvanshi caught the eye of KKR co-owner and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan.

“I met him after the first game, where I didn’t play,” Raghuvanshi said of meeting Shah Rukh, who he hadn’t expected would know his name. “But he came up to me and said, ‘Hey Angkrish, I have been watching you practise’. And that was a big moment for me. I couldn’t say anything at that moment. I just laughed and said thank you, because I froze.”Raghuvanshi also credited his KKR team-mates for the confidence they gave him after his maiden half-century, helping him understand his role in the team and teaching him how to become a team player.”I have the best team-mates. I was new to the system and they have been there for years. They have scored, I don’t know, hundreds of fifties. And it was just my first,” he said about his knock against DC. “But the appreciation and the confidence they gave me in that knock, I couldn’t have asked for more.”Even though he did not play KKR’s knockout games and was not among their retentions for the next season, the franchise outbid Chennai Super Kings in the auction for the 2025 IPL, securing his services for INR 3 crore.He was delighted to be back at a franchise he says feels like home, although he did admit the prospect of working with MS Dhoni, had CSK picked him, was exciting.Raghuvanshi comes from a family of athletes. His father, Avneesh, was a tennis player while his mother, Malika, represented India in basketball, and he feels their sporting legacy has helped his journey.”When I was a kid, both my mom and dad made me play different sports. My dad made me play tennis with him. My mom made me play basketball with her. And obviously cricket, because I’m from an Indian family,” he said. “So I think it has been inculcated into me, the habit of playing sports.”Raghuvanshi scored a half-century in his first IPL innings, and finished with 163 runs in seven innings•BCCIWhile white-ball cricket is where he has made a name so far, he harbours bigger ambitions than just being a T20 dasher. He made his first-class debut in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season and scored 92 as an opener in his second game, against Odisha. He followed that up with an unbeaten half-century against Services, and says he wants to be a Test cricketer “like every other kid in India”.”I grew up watching a lot of Test cricket, big tournaments like the Ashes and the Border Gavaskar Trophy and all that, so obviously, I also want to one day be a Test cricketer. I also love the strategies that come with four-day, five-day cricket. You have to plan very well, while fielding, while bowling, while batting.”Raghuvanshi has come into the 2025 IPL in good form, with two half-centuries in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and scored a 22-ball 30 in his first IPL game this season.Now, playing under Ajinkya Rahane, who was his captain when he made his debut for Mumbai, Raghuvanshi has his sights set on his next goal – to add more silverware to an already glittering resume.

Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts has had a tough 2025 campaign.

Heading into L.A.'s return to Dodger Stadium after a long road trip Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals, Dodgers fans rallied together to show Betts that they have his back. As he stepped to the plate for his first at-bat of the evening, the crowd roared as many stood to their feet to give Betts a tremendous ovation amid his recent struggles.

A plan for the ovation picked up steam across social media over the past day. And once some fans at Dodger Stadium began the louder than usual cheers, you knew others would follow.

Heading into Monday, Betts has a career-low .664 OPS through 102 games. He has never finished a season with an OPS lower than .800. His current batting average (.233), on-base percentage (.305) and slugging percentage (.358) are all career-low numbers, too. Over the Dodgers' last four games, he is 0-for-16 at the plate. He began Monday's game against the Cardinals 0-for-2.

Before the game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Betts will remain in his No. 2 spot in the lineup despite the difficult season and recent stretch. “I’m going to continue to believe in him and trust that he’s the best option," he said pregame, via Fox's Rowan Kavner.

Even with the prolonged slump, Dodgers fans wanted their star shortstop to know they remain by his side.

Consistent wickets plagued Durham’s innings, but the reliable Lees displayed a mix of grit and fluency to pick up a List A best of 148 and was well supported by Ben Raine (46) to get the home side to a total of 300 for eight.Warwickshire got off to a shaky start, but skipper Barnard and Hamza Shaikh combined for a partnership worth 106 to give them the edge.Shaikh was dismissed, but Barnard continued the charge and along with Michael Booth he took his side home with 14 balls to spare.The visitors put Durham into bat at an overcast Banks Homes Riverside and they got their first early on as Ollie Robinson attempted to pull an Ethan Bamber short ball, but he mistimed it and Kai Smith made no mistake with the catch.Will Rhodes then departed for 15 as he attempted a pull shot to a Bamber ball, but he got a nick on it and Smith clung on to it behind the stumps.Emilio Gay should have been walking back to the pavilion early on, as he top edged a Booth short ball but a running Bamber couldn’t cling on to it.Gay then played a couple of delightful cover drives, but he then went for 26 as he pulled an Ed Barnard ball straight to Alex Davies on the boundary.Lees remained solid in the face of consistent wickets and he swept a Taz Ali ball for four to reach fifty from 73 balls.The opener then crunched consecutive Booth deliveries for four to build some much-needed momentum for the hosts.Durham’s struggles against the short ball continued as Colin Ackermann tried to lift a Booth short ball over Smith’s head, but he didn’t get enough on it and was caught behind for 23.Youngster Robbie Bowman then went for one, as Taz Ali produced a beauty to dislodge his off-stump, while George Drissell went for seven caught behind off a Barnard ball.Ben Raine came in and showed some intent, picking up 10 runs from two Rob Yates balls and Lees reached his century from 117 balls at the other end.Lees then moved into T20 mode as he launched back-to-back Booth balls for six and Raine followed that up by smashing an Ali ball down the ground.Raine departed at the hands of Hannon-Dalby for an entertaining 46, while Lees was run out on the last ball for an excellent 148 to take his side to 300 for eight.Warwickshire started their chase of 301 with Barnard and Yates tasked with starting their chase.Barnard played a lovely shot through point off the bowling of Mitch Killeen for four to put pressure on the hosts.Raine got Yates for nine as the opener chopped one on to his off-stump, but Barnard continued to look good as he heaved a Sam Conners ball for six.Malik then backed that up with a lovely lofted straight drive for four off Raine, but the Durham bowler struck back as Malik pulled a short ball straight into the hands of Conners.Warwickshire then found themselves in a bit of trouble when Killeen got Davies LBW for seven.That brought Hamza Shaikh to the crease and he hit Archie Bailey for two boundaries early on and Barnard brought up his half-century from 48 balls at the other end.Barnard steadied the ship and punished a ball from Drissell, launching it down the ground for six and Shaikh got his first maximum as he heaved one over the long-on boundary.The England Under-19s man then reached his fifty from 67 balls, but Raine got him caught in the deep next ball for 51.It became a double salvo for Durham as Killeen got Smith for five, but Barnard notched up his century from 96 balls.However, he was running out of partners as Vaansh Jani was removed by Drissell for 15.Barnard was determined to bring the points back to Birmingham and he scooped a Conners ball for six to take them closer to the target.Booth smashed a Raine short ball for six to give the visitors momentum and he backed that up with a four off Conners, he then won it with a six off the same bowler.

Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani is very much taken, but that didn't stop one ambitious fan from trying to set him up with someone else during the World Series championship parade.

Ohtani and his wife, Mamiko, were seen enjoying themselves atop the players' bus in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon when they spotted a Dodgers fan's "Marry My Mom" sign that was playfully trying to break the couple up. Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell saw it first, and hilariously pointed at the fan with a cheeky smirk.

When Ohtani saw the sign, he turned to tell Mamiko, who immediately was in stitches about it. She then seemed to try to cover Ohtani's eyes in case there were any more flirty or courting signs along the parade route.

A former Tottenham player has backed one of Thomas Frank's key players to "control" Viktor Gyokeres ahead of the north London derby against Arsenal. Spurs are eighth in the Premier League, whereas the Gunners sit top of the pile heading into Sunday's clash at the Emirates. But one man is predicting Mikel Arteta's side will come unstuck against the Europa League holders.

    Former Tottenham midfielder Sandro believes that Arsenal striker Gyokeres will provide a stern test for Spurs centre-back Cristian Romero this weekend. However, the Brazilian believes Dutch defender Micky van de Ven will keep the former Sporting CP forward in check, that is if the 27-year-old is fit to face Frank's players. Sancho also stressed how important getting all three points will be for their season.

    He said, via The Metro: "Gyokeres will be fit for this game. Gyokeres is a player that works very, very hard for the team. I saw him here in Portugal and he can run! He can run, he will give everything for the team. But I think Romero is an intelligent defender, he’s strong and he’s a winner. Van de Ven is fast enough to control him, fast enough to control him in the deep. Gyokeres is a fighter. He will fight with Romero all game long, you’re going to see that. They will be 100% fighting throughout this match, because I see two players that want to fight. Romero will be there to fight for everything. Every single ball, he’s going to throw his head in. Gyokeres will also push Romero, I’m so excited to watch them battle. This could be a very important game for us to change our momentum.     Gyokeres has scored four goals in the Premier League following his switch from Portugal in the summer. So far, he has proven to be a solid recruit, although he is unlikely to get anywhere near the goalscoring numbers he produced at Sporting CP, where the Sweden international bagged 97 goals in 102 matches.

    Van de Ven hailed as world class

    Another former Tottenham player has sung the praises of Van de Ven this week. Ex-Spurs centre-back Michael Dawson believes the 24-year-old will captain the club one day and is one of the best in the world in his position.

    He said: "For me, Micky van de Ven is one of the best centre-backs in the world, not just the Premier League. I honestly believe that. I'm a huge, huge fan and I think he’s got everything. There aren’t many centre backs around that have the pace he does but also are able to read the game in the way he does. I know people will probably say his pace gets him out of trouble at times but I don’t really buy that and I think at times last season he was left to cover an awful lot of ground because of the way the team was set up. That goal he scored in the Champions League was mind blowing. For a centre-back to do that was special and I don’t really see any weaknesses, he’s got all the attributes to go right to the top. Without a shadow of a doubt he’s a future Tottenham captain. I look at Virgil van Dijk and he’s the benchmark for me in terms of how long he’s been at the top for, but I don’t think Micky is far off that, I really don’t. He’s got all the attributes to be a leader and I’m sure the reason he was tied down to a long-term contract was with that in mind."

    Tottenham face a mighty test on Sunday, as Arsenal have won four and drawn one of their five Premier League home games this season. While Spurs' home form is poor, their away record is the second-best in the division. However, their results at the Emirates do not make for pleasant reading if you are a Tottenham fan. In 20 outings there, they have won two, drawn six, and lost 12. But Sandro thinks his old team will emerge victorious this time out.

    He added: "When you talk about Arsenal and Tottenham, I just want Tottenham to win, 100% of the time. But to try to guess is very tough because Arsenal are doing a good job at the moment. Arsenal are in good shape but I think Spurs will win 1-0."
