Rohit undergoes fitness test in Perth heat

Rohit Sharma, who has been out with soreness in his hamstring, underwent a fitness test in the Perth heat, which means India are desperate to get him back on the park as soon as possible without risking his World Cup prospects

Sidharth Monga in Perth28-Jan-2015Even as India stayed away from training in a bid to stay fresh in the middle stretch of a long tour, and more importantly to not exhaust themselves before the World Cup, one India player went through a stern workout in the heat of Perth. Rohit Sharma, who has been out with soreness in his hamstring, was out for a fitness test, which means India are desperate to get him back on the park as soon as possible without risking his World Cup prospects. It is a tricky position for India to be in. They have no momentum going into the World Cup, they are not clear about their combinations, and in this scenario they can’t afford to take it easy with Rohit, which could otherwise have been the case.At 38 degrees, it was a pleasant afternoon by Perth standards, but it wasn’t the day on which to run up and down, go zig-zag around the cones, and just keep going through a fitness test for half an hour with hardly a break. In an empty WACA Ground, Nitin Patel, India’s physio, gave Rohit that test. Rohit was exhausted by the end of it – even during it – but he didn’t seem to be feeling the offending hamstring at all. India don’t share fitness and injury details, but the way Rohit went over to take a look at the pitch didn’t suggest a batsman who was not going to play on it.If Rohit does make his comeback with India still a chance to make the final, it gives them some elbowroom to play around with their combination. He had only just looked to settle the opening issue when his injury and Shikhar Dhawan’s complete lack of form and confidence coincided. In the past Dhawan has gained from a break in cricket, but with only seven batsmen in the squad, India can’t even leave Dhawan out even if they might want to.Rohit will want to build on the century in Melbourne before going into the World Cup. It has been a strange two years for him. He succeeded as an opener in the Champions Trophy in the middle of 2013, followed it up with a double-century at home, but struggled in South Africa and New Zealand. It coincided with an ordinary run in Tests. Doubts ensued over his opening credentials in ODIs too, but then he injured himself even before he could try attempting an encore in the England ODIs.The injury layoff was longer than expected, and Ajinkya Rahane seemed to embed himself in Rohit’s absence even as the incumbent said he liked that position. Rohit reclaimed that position with another double-century at home, but the real concern was away. Just when he seemed to have answered this concern with possibly his most accomplished knock, he injured himself again. He, and India, have been waiting since then.

Faisalabad Wolves went down to Peshawar Panthers by 11 runs despite Misbah-ul-Haq’s efforts. Misbah made 36 off 29 in the chase of 140 but was the ninth batsman out off the second ball of the last over. Wolves needed 22 off the last two overs but Imran Khan conceded only three in the 19th, and despite Misbah hitting a six in the last over, 19 off the final six deliveries proved to be too much for Wolves. Ali Waqas (28) and Asif Ali (29) were the only other contributors of note for Wolves but they fell within successive overs and it came down to Misbah with the lower order collapsing around him. Mohammad Imran Khan picked up 4 for 20 while Imran Khan took 2 for 27.Panthers made 139 for 9 after being asked to bat. Rafatullah Mohmand cracked 43 off 21 at the top of the order even as his opening partner Israrullah crawled to 3 off 13. Mohammad Rizwan’s 37 at No. 6 was the only other decent score as all the Wolves bowlers chipped in with wickets. An unbeaten half-century from Babar Azam steered Islamabad Leopards to an eight-wicket win over Lahore Eagles. Chasing 132, Leopards raced to their target with 16 balls remaining, with Azam not out on 51 off 35 balls, with eight fours in his innings. Opener Afaq Raheem set up the chase with a 22-ball 41, taking Leopards to 52 before being dismissed in the fifth over.Having chosen to field, Leopards quickly had Eagles in trouble at 14 for 2, with Umar Gul and Shehzad Azam striking once each. Sami Aslam helped Lahore Eagles recover, adding 53 for the third wicket with Imran Butt and 23 with Raza Ali Dar before he fell for a 44-ball 51. Dar went on to score 45, off 30 balls, before Gul dismissed him and Adnan Akmal off successive balls in the final over of their innings.

Group D

Mohammad Yasir’s maiden Twenty20 half-century powered Bahawalpur Stags to a seven-wicket win against Lahore Lions in Karachi. Chasing 141, Yasir slammed eight fours and two sixes during a 41-ball 57, as he and Naeemuddin (34) added 55 for the second wicket to give the team a solid foundation. Both batsmen fell within four overs of each other by the 16th over, but Faisal Mubashir and Kamran Hussain ensured Stags gunned down the total with 14 deliveries to spare.Lions, having been inserted, lost Kamran Akmal early, but were driven by a 61-run, second-wicket partnership between Azhar Ali and Imam-ul-Haq. However, Abdul Rehman (3 for 24) and Tauqeer Riasat (2 for 21) pegged Lions back with regular blows, and restricted the team to 140 for 6.

Hughes haul as wickets tumble

Alex Hughes returned career-best figures as Derbyshire exploited helpful conditions before Glamorgan hit back as 16 wickets fell on the opening day

ScorecardAlex Hughes claimed his first four-wicket haul in first-class cricket•Getty ImagesAlex Hughes returned career-best figures as Derbyshire exploited helpful conditions before Glamorgan hit back as 16 wickets fell on the opening day of the Championship Division Two match at the County Ground. The medium-pacer claimed 4 for 46 after Tony Palladino blew away the top order to finish with three 3 for 14 from 14 overs. Glamorgan were bowled out for 138 on a grassy pitch, with only Murray Goodwin and Mark Wallace offering any resistance.Goodwin survived two dropped chances to score 44 and Wallace made 30 but the rest of the batting had no answer to the swinging ball and Derbyshire also struggled despite a half-century from Wes Durston to close four ahead on 142 for 6.Glamorgan had failed to make 200 in five of their previous six innings against Derbyshire and they were soon in trouble after they were put in to bat on a morning made for seam and swing bowling. The Derby ground had been under water on Saturday but it was movement through the air on a humid, cloudy day that spelled trouble for the visitors who scored only 15 runs in the first hour and lost three wickets.Jacques Rudolph was caught behind off an inside edge in the second over to give Gareth Cross his 200th first-class victim and after 48 balls without a run from the bat, William Bragg was lbw playing half forward to Palladino. The paceman did not concede a run until the second ball of his sixth over and he took his third wicket when Ben Wright edged one that moved away to second slip.If Goodwin had not been dropped on nought at third slip, Glamorgan’s position would have been even worse as the clatter of wickets continued with Chris Cooke lbw half forward to Hughes for 11 and Jim Allenby edging a firm push at Tom Taylor to Cross. With half the side gone for 50 at lunch, Glamorgan’s hopes rested with Goodwin and Wallace who showed what was possible by batting for 19 overs but Goodwin’s dismissal sparked another collapse. The 41-year-old was caught behind off Hughes as he tried to take his bat away and Wallace quickly followed with a prod at Mark Footitt that ended in the hands of third slip.Glamorgan lost their last four wickets for eight runs in 31 balls and although the ball had zoomed around in the heavy atmosphere, it had not been a distinguished batting display by the visitors on a track cleared of any blame by pitch liaison officer Tony Pigott.James Harris celebrated his return to his home county on a month’s loan from Middlesex by having Derbyshire’s Billy Godleman caught behind in the seventh over and two big wickets followed in the space of three overs.Wayne Madsen was lbw falling across as he tried to work Allenby through midwicket and Will Owen struck with his third ball when he beat Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s tentative push to win an lbw decision from Nick Cook. Durston and Ben Slater lifted Derbyshire to 126 for 3 but Harris and Michael Hogan took three wickets in 28 balls to keep Glamorgan in the game.Glamorgan’s Wallace admitted it had been a tough start at the County Ground. “The last half-hour of the session has dragged it back for us,” he said. “It was tough this morning, it seamed around and swung a bit and Derbyshire bowled very, very well but it’s even Stevens on the scoreboard now.”Derbyshire’s elite performance director Graeme Welch was pleased with his side’s bowling performance, saying: “The lads are bowling well in tandem and the unit is coming on. You can get carried away on pitches like this but they bowled good lines and good lengths and got their rewards. If we had been four down it would probably have been our day but we’ve just let them back in with another couple of wickets.”

Permaul, Beaton steal match for Guyana

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsVeerasammy Permaul held his nerve in the final overs, taking three wickets to seal a 22-run win for Guyana•WICB Media

Guyana’s bowlers teamed up for a determined effort to claw out a 22-run win over Windward Islands on Tuesday at Queen’s Park Oval. The win meant that both Guyana and Jamaica have qualified for the semifinals while Windward Islands and Ireland have been eliminated from advancing in the Nagico Super50 tournament. With 30 needed for victory in 36 balls, Veerasammy Permaul took three wickets in the space of seven runs to end the match leaving defending regional 50-over tournament champions Windward Islands stunned.Windward Islands paid dearly for a poor performance in the field and as a result failed to fully capitalize on early seaming conditions after Guyana chose to bat first. Guyana’s win was even more impressive considering that Shivnarine Chanderpaul missed the match due to injury.Delorn Johnson struck in the first over to remove Trevon Griffith without scoring and Johnson should have claimed Ramnaresh Sarwan for nought two overs later but a straightforward edge behind was shelled by wicketkeeper Andre Fletcher. It was a costly error as Sarwan eventually made the game’s high score of 62 and built a 121-run second wicket partnership with Chanderpaul’s replacement, Assad Fudadin. The pair focused on survival in the testing conditions at the start of play as Guyana crawled to 20 for 1 in 14 overs. Fudadin was on 8 off 53 deliveries before striking Guyana’s first boundary in the 15th over off Mervin Mathew but by the end of his knock he made 51 crucial runs. Their patient stand was vital in the final result, protecting the middle order from deliveries that darted around on an up and down wicket.Guyana captain Christopher Barnwell and Leon Johnson provided a late burst with an 84-run fourth wicket stand in just nine overs to give their bowlers something to aim at defending. Johnson scored 41 off 31 balls with three fours and two sixes while Barnwell scored 51 in 43 balls before being caught on the final ball of the innings in Guyana’s total of 235 for 7. Mathew took 4 for 41 for Windward Islands.Even though Windward Islands lost both openers in the first nine overs, they kept their run rate moving swiftly as they seemed intent on chasing a bonus point win by reaching the target inside 40 overs. After 11 overs, they were 69 for 2 but the introduction of spin from both ends brought Guyana back into the game.Devendra Bishoo had been clubbed for a huge six by Fletcher over midwicket in his second over, but won a generous lbw decision two overs later when Fletcher shuffled across his crease and missed a flick to fine leg to go for 17. Bishoo gained a second leg before dismissal two overs later when Tyrone Theophile was late on a quicker delivery to make it 96 for 4 on the first ball of the 21st over. From there, Windward Islands shifted focus away from chasing a bonus point and moved along at a moderate pace to 143 for 4 in 30 overs. However, opening bowler Ronsford Beaton returned for a key middle-overs spell to bowl Romel Currency, breaking a 59-run stand with Keddy Lesporis. Paul Wintz trapped Lesporis in the next over for 33 to put Guyana back in control at 158 for 6.Mathew tried to counterattack with a six and two fours and fortune looked to be smiling on Windward Islands when captain Liam Sebastian was given not out on a tight runout decision. Sebastian was on six when he clipped a delivery from Wintz to deep midwicket and ran back to the bowler’s end for a third. Wintz appeared to have received the relay throw and flicked off the bails in time, but the best replay angle from side-on was obstructed by Barnwell positioning to backup the throw.Windward Islands needed 36 off 48 balls with four wickets in hand but Beaton intervened to end the 42-run partnership between Mathew and Sebastien. The breach opened the door for Permaul to spin out the tail. Permaul claimed wickets on back-to-back balls in the 45th to make it 206 for 9. First was Garey Mathurin, who top-edged an attempted sweep off his pads and into the gloves of the keeper Anthony Bramble before Johnson was caught off guard by a quicker delivery to be bowled first ball. Two overs later, Permaul finished the match when he bowled a fuller delivery that Sebastien was late sweeping to win Guyana’s fourth lbw decision of the match clinching a hard-fought win. Permaul ended with 3 for 24 but despite his late heroics, Beaton was named Man of the Match for his momentum-shifting spell and finished with 3 for 43.

Smith puts Mumbai in all-IPL final

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsSachin Tendulkar got to 50,000 runs in all recognised cricket•BCCI

Dwayne Smith and Sachin Tendulkar provided the searing start that set Mumbai Indians on course for a second Champions League T20 final in three years, a final which will now be an all-IPL affair. Smith bludgeoned 59 from 38 as the pair made 90 together in 11 overs, in pursuit of T&T’s middling 153 for 5. Though the openers’ demise in the space of an over comprised a stutter, they had done enough to ensure the middle order could see out the dangerous Sunil Narine, and complete a straightforward victory, made easier by the injury to Rayad Emrit, who hurt his shoulder in the first over.Nathan Coulter-Nile had earlier been instrumental in subduing T&T, who had their own blazing start courtesy Evin Lewis’ 46-ball 62. Coulter-Nile conceded only 20 in his four overs, in which he also took one wicket, while both Kieron Pollard and Pragyan Ojha also took one apiece and gave away less than a run a ball in their three-over spells.Smith bludgeoned one back past the bowler and struck one sweetly in front of point to begin his onslaught, in the second over, and then, having ambled to three off seven balls, Tendulkar found form for the first time in the tournament. A crisp straight drive on the up off Rampaul was a throwback to his heyday, but the slog over long-on and a back-away inside-out drive that yielded consecutive sixes soon after were more a product of the present age than a bygone one.The pair took 49 runs from the Powerplay, but even the onset of spin only brought a slight dip in the run rate, as they were only made to deal with one over from Sunil Narine, even as they took the game away from T&T. Tendulkar crossed the 50,000-run aggregate for recognised cricket across all formats in the eighth over, to the crowd’s delight, while Smith doled out boundaries fashioned from power and touch in equal measure.Tendulkar was caught behind for 35 from 31, before Narine struck twice in the following over, to give rise to T&T hopes, but Mumbai needed only 58 runs from the last eight overs, and Dinesh Karthik’s unbeaten 33 ensured not even Narine would derail the chase. A six over extra cover off Lendl Simmons off the first ball of the 20th over sealed the victory.Lewis’ first boundary in T&T’s innings was off a Mitchell Johnson edge through second slip, but he slapped the next one over the third-man boundary and rarely erred again until his demise. Lewis took a liking to Johnson’s next over as well, carving two off side boundaries off it, but though Darren Bravo’s early strokeplay suggested he too had the Mumbai attack’s measure, he walked past Pragyan Ojha’s legside wide to have himself stumped for 14.Having hit 61 off the first eight overs, T&T slowed significantly against Ojha, Coulter-Nile and Pollard, who bowled tight lines and mixed up their pace to good effect on a dry Delhi surface. Yannick Ottley’s unbeaten 41 off 30 pushed T&T beyond 150, which seemed a competitive total despite the mediocre returns from the middle overs, but with one bowler down and the remaining quicks far from their best on the night, T&T could not deny the IPL champions.

Haddin hopeful of quick fix

Australia’s Ashes vice-captain Brad Haddin has expressed earnest hope the new coach Darren Lehmann can help provide the rapid fixes the tourists desperately need if they are to seriously challenge England after Mickey Arthur’s “cut-throat” removal. As an injury replacement during the shambolic tour of India earlier this year and over the past three weeks as the captain of Australia A, Haddin was a witness first to the decline in the national team’s standards and then to Arthur’s swift exit as a result, across a series of meetings during the team’s match against Gloucestershire in Bristol.Shocking as the initial news had been, Haddin was optimistic that Lehmann’s appointment would provide the supercharge needed for a team short of confidence and balance ahead of the series. This is no more readily apparent than in the team’s batting stocks, where the likes of Phillip Hughes, Shane Watson, Usman Khawaja and the captain Michael Clarke have precious little form behind them.”We’ve got to be accountable as a bowling group and as a batting group,” Haddin said. “All of us as a batting group, there are obviously areas we need to improve in our game, and I’m pretty confident we’ll go in the right direction over the next two weeks. The bottom line is we’ve got to perform and I’m comfortable with where this group’s at. We’ve got the best cricketers in Australia here and I’m comfortable we can move forward with that.”Like his captain Michael Clarke, Haddin accepted the players had to take some responsibility for the fate that has befallen Arthur. But he was swiftly on-message to avoid too much introspection over the events of the past few months. After all, only two weeks out from the toss of the coin at Trent Bridge there is scarcely a second to waste on solid knocks and second thoughts.”It’s not something that we have to deal with every day, the loss of a coach,” Haddin said. “But from our point of view we’ve got to make this a fresh start. We can go over what’s happened as much as we want an analyse what’s gone on but the bottom line is we’ve got to move forward as a cricket team and we’ve got to start performing.”It’s obviously disappointing for Mickey. He’s put a lot of time and effort into this team, but it’s a fresh start and we’ve got to make sure we’re in the right frame come that first Test. We as a group have to be accountable for where we want to take this team, and we’ll see how successful that is. We’re pretty comfortable now with moving forward. It’s not hard to be motivated by this tour.”I don’t think a day like this is needed to remind everyone of how high the stakes are playing for Australia. This is cut-throat, this is the pinnacle of what we all do as coaches, players, support staff, everyone. And one thing with this group I’ve noticed – we’re a very talented squad and as guys we just need to move forward as a cricket team and become better as a team moving forward and I’m very confident that can happen.”Recalled to the Australian team as the kind of senior player so desperately missed since the retirements of Michael Hussey and Ricky Ponting, Haddin can recall his days jousting with Lehmann as opposing captains in domestic matches between South Australia and New South Wales. But over the past three weeks as the captain of Australia A, Haddin has watched Lehmann’s coaching work up close, and liked what he saw.”It was an enjoyable A tour, we got out of it exactly what we needed leading into this series,” Haddin said. “We had a lot of players at different stages in preparation, guys on their first tour, guys getting ready for the Ashes, and Darren and Troy [Cooley] were very positive about the cricket we wanted to play and that we wanted to win three matches. Darren was very aggressive in his approach there. He wanted us to get the game moving forward and win cricket games. That’s what we did.”We’ve sat down as a group and planned what we want to do over the next couple of weeks leading into the first Test. As a group we’re pretty clear on what we want to do, we’re at different stages as players, but we’re all on the same path here trying to get to this first Test. It’s a new start.”
