Collingwood grit the example for Durham

Somerset were unable to dismiss Durham a second time in their two-day game but the hosts batting problems continued to dog them

When Paul Collingwood responded to the end of his England career near the end of last season not by retiring, but by restating his commitment to Durham, with a dash of worldwide Twenty20 thrown in, his head coach Geoff Cook extolled the virtues of a grounded personality who had proved there was a cricketing life beyond the international stage.”He can help us through a slightly transitional phase,” Cook said at the time. Only the word “slightly” is now looking a little over optimistic. Transition is upon Durham quicker than Cook had hoped, certainly in the four-day game, and judging by the nervy way they secured a draw against Somerset, Collingwood’s scrapping instincts have never been more necessary.Durham, widely regarded as serious Championship contenders, remain bottom. They had begun the final day vulnerably placed, felt relatively safe at tea at 144 for 3, a lead admittedly of only two runs, but two quick wickets after the break for Craig Meschede, including the captain Phil Mustard, the only man who has dared look at his batting statistics this season, ensured there would be no handshakes at 5pm.It was left to Ian Blackwell, with foot movement so restricted that you would not fancy his chances crossing the stepping stones at Stanhope, to negotiate a draw with a stubborn 38 not out, but Somerset might have pulled off a win had Peter Trego or Alex Barrow held two slip catches when a late-evening run chase was still a possibility.Somerset also had chances earlier. Mark Stoneman was missed by Craig Overton at third slip and turned 4 into 33 and Collingwood had also edged Trego perilously close to second slip when 9 and went on to make 36. Somerset abandoned hope with Durham 92 ahead, the last pair at the crease and seven overs remaining.A draw was something to cling to after trailing by 142 on first innings and they have the chance to build on that against Somerset in the CB40 on Sunday when Collingwood will take over the captaincy in the absence of Dale Benkenstein, who dislocated his shoulder in the pre-match warm-up. Cook is calling for character; he used to call for Steve Harmison, but Harmison has spent all season searching for a glimmer of form in the second XI.Durham secured a draw without ridding themselves of the damning statistic that no batsman in the top six has yet reached fifty. Collingwood looked as likely as anybody to rid the county of an unwelcome marker before he fell lbw to Overton on 36. He settled in by pulling Trego for four and suggested that he was in reasonable order with a controlled extra-cover boundary against Meschede, an area where he can lose a spoke on the wagon wheel.Returning to the county circuit after a long England career is not easy even for a cricketer with such a strong sense of regional identity as Collingwood and, even if he was never the type to envisage himself as a captain until the leadership of England’s one-day sides fell his way, the extra responsibility could give him a fillip in the short term. County cricket, too, needs to prove that it can provide a few years of satisfaction for a committed cricketer with much still to give. If Collingwood cannot attune himself to a less glamorous existence then few can.County cricket’s gamesome pitches, during possibly the most weather-ravaged start to a Championship season since the 1950s, are quite a culture shock for England batsmen used to true international surfaces.”I don’t think anybody has seen the wickets around the country do this much,” Collingwood said after the washed-out third day. “I’ve spoken to people like Andrew Strauss and we just laugh about how much the ball’s doing. You’ve just got to forget about technique and things like that and find a way of scoring runs. You can be technically absolutely fantastic and be out second ball. It really has been difficult.”As a batsman you try to protect one side of the bat but in these conditions you find the ball can beat both sides. It’s like a spinner bowling normal off-breaks then all of a sudden you’ve got one going the other way.”It is the rewards of T20 that, naturally, have also driven Collingwood on, as the recognition grows that few players have managed to make a success of semi-retirement and a career playing exclusively T20 cricket. He was part of the Perth Scorchers side that qualified for the Champions League and also had a stint for Impi in South Africa. He would still not have returned to share Durham’s early season agony had not Rajasthan Royals told him that with ten overseas players on their books he was surplus to requirements in the IPL.That Somerset could put Durham under so much pressure owed much to the verve of Craig Kieswetter. Somerset were eight down at start of play and after two washed-out days led by 95, but Kieswetter borrowed a few leg side shots from the IPL and finished unbeaten on 96, scoring 36 of a further 47 added.Kieswetter’s assault forced Durham to field four leg-side boundary fielders for Mitch Claydon and it was one of them, Stoneman, who eventually ran out the last man, George Dockrell, at the bowler’s end from deep midwicket as Kieswetter tried to farm the strike. Graham Onions was harder to slog, his form one of the few bright aspects to a difficult Durham season.

Titans part ways with coach Chris van Noorwdyk

Chris van Noordwtk’s contract at the Titans has not been renewed for the 2011-12 season

Firdose Moonda21-Apr-2011The Titans franchise will not be renewing the contract of head coach Chris van Noorwdyk for the upcoming season. van Noordwyk was in charge for two seasons, during which the Titans failed to win any silverware.van Noordwyk succeeded former Pakistan coach Richard Pybus, who enjoyed a succesful five-year stint with the Titans. Under Pybus, the Titans won seven trophies, including three SuperSport Series, two MTN domestic titles and two Pro20s. Pybus quit in July 2009, which gave van Noordwyk, who was then his assistant, to move up to coach at the franchise level.”During his tenure as coach of the Northern Cricket Union Amateur team and Titans assistant coach, Chris had the unique ability to identify players who came through the system to play at a higher level,” Andy O’Connor, chairman of the Easterns Titans board said. “We appreciate the contributions that Chris has made and wish him well in the future.”van Noordwyk, who was born in Durban, has done all his administrative work at the Titans. Before he was appointed coach, he was the Titans’ cricket coordinator and was responsible for identifying and developing talent. Youngsters like Roelof van der Merwe and Farhaan Berhardien came through at that time. While youth flourished, when van Noordwyk took over as coach, the Titans lost some of their key players such as Dale Steyn, who moved to the Cobras, Imran Tahir, who went to the Dolphins and Paul Harris, who joined the Lions.

Zimbabwe coach looks to spin

Alan Butcher, the Zimbabwe coach, has backed his team’s strength in spin bowling to cause Sri Lanka problems when the two teams meet at Providence on Monday

Andrew McGlashan in Providence02-May-2010Alan Butcher, the Zimbabwe coach, has backed his team’s strength in spin bowling to cause Sri Lanka problems when the two teams meet at Providence on Monday. Zimbabwe could open the bowling with two spinners and have the option to use as many as six or seven in the innings on the slow Guyana pitch.Zimbabwe have played plenty of cricket in West Indies recently – first the T20 and one-day tour then the trip to Grenada to face West Indies A – and spin has been central to their strategy throughout. Ray Price, the left-armer, often takes the new ball while captain Prosper Utseya and legspinner Graeme Cremer are the other frontline options. Utseya can also call on Greg Lamb, Timycen Maruma and Brendan Taylor depending on team selection.”We haven’t yet got the fast-bowling resources to change that strategy,” Butcher told Cricinfo, “but on the other hand why would you because spinners have done exceptionally well in Twenty20 all over the world. Taking pace off the ball is a vital tactic.”Zimbabwe produced two notable victories against Australia and Pakistan during their warm-up matches and Butcher said they couldn’t have come at a better time after a tough couple of weeks in Grenada.”The boost that the two results last week gave us has been immense. We came off the back of a pretty disappointing time in Grenada against West Indies A where we lost the four-day game and two T20s.”They [the wins] were obviously of less importance to the two teams we were playing, but on the day there was no doubt that they were trying to win and we played pretty well. You have to be happy that there is progress being made.”However, while spin bowling is clearly Zimbabwe’s strong point they still need enough runs to play with and the batting remains a concern. Elton Chigumbura, who has recently signed for Northamptonshire, showed his importance to the side with a thunderous 75 off 35 balls against Australia and 49 off 35 balls against Pakistan, but contributions from the top order have been limited.”The batting has been a problem, but over the last couple of days I’ve seen an improvement and that people are starting to work out their games better,” Butcher said, but he singled out Chigumbura for praise. “Against Australia and Pakistan he struck the ball brilliantly and he could be a star of the tournament if we do manage to sneak a win and progress.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kirby is one of England's most talented players but has sadly been hampered by setbacks in recent times. It was only last summer when the Chelsea playmaker was forced to miss the World Cup as a result of a knee problem that had already ended her club season early. Both the Blues and the Lionesses will hope this problem is nowhere near as serious.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Kirby became Chelsea's all-time top goal-scorer on the women's side in late 2020 and has now scored over 100 goals for the club. The only other player to hit a century for the Blues is Sam Kerr.

How the USMNT should line up vs Canada in Gold Cup quarterfinal: Red hot Jesus Ferreira to be unleashed again as Bryan Reynolds & Cade Cowell deserve to continue

GOAL takes a look at how the U.S. could line up in the Gold Cup last eight, with interim coach B.J. Callaghan having some big calls to make.

Before the Gold Cup got going, U.S. men's national team interim coach B.J. Callaghan divided the tournament up into two halves. The first was the group stage, clashes with Jamaica, St. Kitts & Nevis and Trinidad & Tobago, which he could use to mix and match while figuring out his team. And then would come the knockouts, a chance to reset, refocus and charge forward towards another trophy.

Well, we're in the business end of the tournament now and, with a week between games, the U.S. heads into the knockout rounds with a clash against Canada. The time for rotating and experimenting is done; now let's see who steps up.

The Gold Cup, of course, is more about individual performances than anything else for the USMNT. The main team, by and large, is on vacation after their Nations League triumph. The players in this camp are largely on the fringes and pushing for more.

Several have seized their chance thus far, earning the right to keep their starting place for the knockouts. However, Callaghan does have some difficult decisions to make. With everyone fit and healthy, who does he leave out? And, with one key player on yellow card watch, does Callaghan make a change now to avoid a potential semifinal suspension?

GOAL takes a look at how the U.S. could line up…

  • Getty

    GK: Matt Turner

The time for experimenting is over, and, unfortunately, we didn't get to see Gaga Slonina get a run during the group stage.

This is Turner's time – if fit and healthy, the Arsenal goalkeeper starts every game going forward.

  • Getty

    RB: Bryan Reynolds

One of the standouts of the group stage, Reynolds has made this spot his own.

Could Callaghan be tempted to turn to the veteran DeAndre Yedlin? Sure, but should he? Absolutely not. Reynolds has been fantastic so far and has earned the chance to start the rest of the way. We'll see if he sinks or swims but, at least so far, Reynolds has been fantastic.

  • Getty

    CB: Miles Robinson

With another week of rest under his belt, Robinson should just about be 100 percent fit.

He was given a 45-minute runout in the final group-stage game, which was a nice rehab assignment. Now, Robinson should be feeling right for the knockouts, where he'll likely start every game, should the US progress.

    CB: Jalen Neal

A big, big decision for Callaghan.

It shouldn't be, to be fair. Neal has been the breakout star of this team, the player that has improved his stock the most with his performances so far. However, Neal is one yellow card away from being suspended for a potential semifinal match.

Looking ahead, though, this Canada game is likely the tougher match than a potential Qatar/Panama semifinal. Knowing that, we'll give Neal the start. If he makes it through the game unpunished, fantastic. If not, he'll get a rest for the semis against a team that is, theoretically, less talented than the one the U.S. will face on Sunday.

Austin FC were defeated 2-0 by Los Angeles Galaxy last Saturday at the Dignity Health Sports Park, failing to arrest their dwindling form.

Since March's 2-0 win over Violette in the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions League Round of 16 exit, Austin has gone five games without a win, losing three and drawing two.

Wolff's men, on the other hand, return to the Q2 Stadium, where they are unbeaten in four games, with two draws and two wins since their 3-2 setback to St Louis City in the league opener on February 26.

Austin's slow start to the season could be linked to their struggles in attack, where they have scored just one goal in their last five outings, while already conceding 12 at the opposite end of the pitch this season.

San Jose Earthquakes, on the other hand, were knocked out of the US Open Cup in the third round by USL Championship club Monterey Bay FC on Wednesday.

San Jose Earthquakes will now return to Major League Soccer, where they were defeated 3-1 by Real Salt Lake at America First Field on Sunday, ending their three-match unbeaten streak.

Despite their poor results, San Jose Earthquakes are still fifth in the Western Conference standings, sitting equal on 14 points with fourth-placed Dallas and five points behind first-placed St Louis City.

Gurney's five hurtles Nottinghamshire to first win

ScorecardHarry Gurney helped hurtle the match to swift finish on the final day•PA Photos

Five wickets for Harry Gurney – a career-best 5 for 43 in fact – ensured that the magnificent contribution of the two rookie pace bowlers, Luke Wood and Jake Ball, was made to count as Sussex were finished off in 32 overs in rather a tame end to what had been a contest of fluctuating fortunes, bowled out for 150 five overs into the afternoon session on the third day of the scheduled four.It gave Nottinghamshire a first win of the season after a worryingly inconsistent start for a county seemingly laden with talented. Ball, the 24-year-old right-armer, finished with 9 for 67 from the match, 19-year-old Wood 5 for 96 plus, of course, the little matter of 153 runs – a maiden century followed by 53 in the second innings – which suggests he is more than just a promising left-arm seamer. It leaves director of cricket Mick Newell facing an unexpected selection dilemma for Nottinghamshire’s next Championship match, against Somerset at Taunton the week after next, when he will have the former Australian Test bowler Ben Hilfenhaus available after arriving to replace Vernon Philander in the overseas slot, as well as Stuart Broad, now available after being omitted from England’s one-day international squad.Someone is going to be unlucky and it is not easy to identify who. With Michael Lumb likely to return from injury to bolster the top order but with Alex Hales and James Taylor away on England duty, Newell will go with four seamers instead of three, which opens up one place.”You are probably looking at two from three of Jake, Luke and Harry,” Newell said. “We have a lot of Twenty20 cricket in June so that comes into it and Luke will only play red ball cricket, so he has a good chance. And we’ll look at where we are with Jake and Harry when that game comes around.”Jake has been terrific in this game. I’ve said before that he has been out best bowler going back to our pre-season tour and like Harry he can do well in all forms of the game, so we’ll have the option to share things round.”Mark Robinson, the Sussex cricket manager, would love a headache of that nature. With Tymal Mills, Ajmal Shahzad, Ashar Zaidi, James Anyon and Lewis Hatchett all injured, and Chris Jordan picked for the England ODI squad, his bowling resources could not be more stretched. At least Steve Magoffin appears to be unbreakable. The 35-year-old Australian took 12 wickets in this match, six in each innings, to take him to 35 for the Championship season so far. Robinson says Magoffin has yet to find a level of consistency the bowler himself believes to be satisfactory so far, although there were phases in this match when he looked close to his best. It is only the third time in his career he has taken 10 or more in a match. Goodness knows what he will achieve if he can return to peak form.Despite all the injuries, Sussex went into this match only 18 points behind the Division One leaders with a game in hand, so they are hardly struggling. The absence of Ed Joyce undermined their potential with the bat here on a difficult wicket, yet Robinson believed it was by letting Nottinghamshire off the hook twice in the match when his bowlers were on top that cost Sussex dearly.”The young lad Wood took it away from us in the first innings and then after having them seven down for 108 to let them get near to 250 on a 150 wicket left us massively behind the eight ball,” he said.”I was disappointed that we started to feel a bit sorry for ourselves towards the end of the second day and I think that carried over a bit. But for the last four games we have played on result wickets and the batsmen are a bit shell-shocked, really, and they need to get some confidence back.”Nottinghamshire’s last three second-innings wickets went in the space of 20 balls into the morning session. Wood thick-edged Ollie Robinson to point for 53 before Samit Patel completed his first century since the corresponding match in April last year, but then the innings ended rather rapidly with Patel top-edging his next ball to be caught at point and then Ball swinging at one and getting a nick as Magoffin finished with two wickets in two balls. That gave him 6 for 50 and 12 for 159 for the match. It is the second time the Australian has taken 12 wickets in a match although not his career best. Against Somerset in 2013 he took 8 for 20 and 4 for 11.Sussex needed 310 to win but they were quickly two down as both Mike Yardy and Matt Machan were out without scoring, both leg before to Ball. In match of duplications – three six-wicket hauls, two men out the ball after reaching 100 – Ball found himself on a hat-trick for the second time in the match, and as in the first innings by taking wickets with the last ball of one over and the first of the next. Chris Nash survived but then Brendan Taylor, who had dropped Luke Wells once, held on to a second chance offered by the left-hander off Wood.Chris Nash fended off a brutish ball from Wood into the hands of short leg before Gurney began a run of five wickets in 43 balls by having Craig Cachopa caught behind, then bowling Luke Wright for 39. Jordan and Robinson went to consecutive balls, after which Magoffin and Ben Brown at least extended the contest beyond lunch, adding 52 for the ninth wicket before Magoffin missed one and Ball claimed the final scalp.Patel, now 30 and until recently the last graduate of the Nottinghamshire academy system to find a permanent home in the first team, heralded the progress of Wood and Ball.”To see the way Luke Wood played in the first innings, that’s what won us the game,” Patel said. “And he played with a lot of maturity in the second innings too.”Jake has come on leaps and bounds and the pace he has gained his crucial. If you are to survive at this level you have to have a bit of pace. People talk about us needing to bring local talent through and to see them doing so well as local lads is fantastic.”

Libertadores?

> A TABELA DO CAMPEONATO BRASILEIRO

Nessas 12 partidas, o Botafogo marcou dez gols e sofreu 21.

> O DIA A DIA DO BOTAFOGO
