Leeds and 49ers set to sell £30,000-a-week dud who Farke called the "best"

Leeds United look ready to sell a Daniel Farke regular who the Whites boss has previously called the “best”.

Leeds back on top of the Championship with five games to go

It was another eventful night in the Championship on Tuesday, with Leeds returning to the top of the table after their 1-0 win at Middlesbrough.

Dan James scored the winner early on, whereas Burnley were held by Derby County and Sheffield United fell to defeat at home to Millwall.

Karl Darlow kept his first clean sheet in the league for Leeds in what was his second start after replacing Illan Meslier.

The Frenchman has been a regular under Farke’s reign at Leeds, however, he decided to drop the goalkeeper after errors against Swansea City at the end of March.

Talking about the decision, Farke, who called Meslier the “best in the league” last year, said: “Obviously he was involved in both [Swansea] goals in the last game, and it was a shame because after the penalty save he was on his way to being man of the match.

“So it was clear we had to make a decision. And we had to make it early in the week, because in that position the players need clarity, and Karl [Darlow] needs the time to prepare. We had a pretty open, honest conversation. Of course he’s disappointed he won’t start. But he took it very professionally and he was still more disappointed about the Swansea game.”

Leeds have been linked with Chelsea’s Djordje Petrovic, Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale and even Newcastle United’s Nick Pope, and it looks as if they are willing to cash in on their now number-two shot-stopper.

Leeds ready to sell Illan Meslier and are working on replacement

Talking to Football Insider, former scout Mick Brown has heard that Leeds are ready to sell Meslier this summer and are already “working” on a replacement.

“He isn’t going to be a part of their plans for the future. From what I hear, Leeds are going to listen to offers for him in the summer. Question marks have been raised about him throughout the season because he keeps making mistakes and it’s costing them dearly.

“It has to come to a point where the manager sits him down and says it’s not good enough. You look at the successful teams, they’ve all got a top-class goalkeeper, and that goes from the likes of Liverpool and Man City over the years to Burnley at the moment.

“So Leeds are going to see if they can raise some money from him, and then whatever they bring in will go towards signing a new goalkeeper. They’ve already been working to identify replacements, and they’ll know who might be available.”

Meslier included: Leeds must axe £150k-p/w quartet if they go up

Daniel Farke will tempted by a slight clear-out at Leeds United if Premier League football returns to Elland Road.

ByKelan Sarson Apr 8, 2025

On £30,000-a-week, Meslier is under contract at Elland Road until 2026, so this summer looks like the last chance the Whites can recoup some or all of the £5m they paid back in 2020.

WPL 2025: Can new captain Gardner change Gujarat Giants' fortunes around?

With a new coaching set-up in hand, team will be keen to move up from the bottom of the points table this time around

Chopra: Giants over-reliant on their overseas players

Where Giants finished last seasonGujarat Giants (GG) finished at the bottom for the second consecutive season. They started with four defeats in a row and never recovered from that slide. Eventually, they ended the season with just two wins in eight games. What’s new this yearAshleigh Gardner will be the new Giants captain, having taken over the reins from her fellow national team-mate Beth Mooney. Gardner has been with the Giants since the inaugural season and was the team’s vice-captain for most of the first edition after Mooney picked up a calf injury one game into WPL 2023. Whether Giants can turn their fortunes around under Gardner’s leadership is something to keep an eye on. They have also parted ways with Mithali Raj (mentor), and Nooshin Al Khadeer (assistant coach) after two seasons with Daniel Marsh and Pravin Tambe coming on board as batting and bowling coaches, respectively. But Giants made headlines when they roped in experienced Deandra Dottin and young Simran Shaikh to fix their batting woes. Shaikh was the biggest buy in the auction with the team spending INR 1.9 crore on her. Among the overseas players, Dottin was paid the highest, INR 1.7 crore. Both were not part of WPL last season.Related

Both of them are coming off an impressive run in international cricket – Mooney was the highest run-getter in the recently concluded Ashes, where she hit 213 in three T20Is. Dottin was the leading scorer for West Indies against Bangladesh in T20Is, where she accumulated 110 runs in three matches at a stunning strike rate of 203.7. They will hope that the likes of Laura Wolvaardt, Mooney and Dottin will carry forward their international form into WPL and ensure Giants do not end up in the same position as last year. That aside, having shown tremendous consistency for Australia over the years, Gardner would be expected to step up with the ball in the WPL and turn her ordinary performances into match-winning ones. She had a decent WPL last year and was the second-highest wicket-taker for the team with seven scalps from eight matches at an economy rate of 7.75.Young one to watch: Simran ShaikhIt will be a fresh start for the Mumbai allrounder who went unsold in the 2024 auction after an underwhelming season with UP Warriorz in 2023. In seven innings, she scored just 29 runs in the inaugural edition. However, she has returned to the WPL with massive expectations. Giants head coach Micheal Klinger had said she “stands out in terms of her hitting power and strike rate” and hinted at using her as a pinch-hitter in the top six or seven. Shaikh scored 176 runs in nine innings at the 2024 senior women’s T20 trophy at a strike rate of 100.57 but at Giants, she might be able to offer more than what these numbers suggest.Gujarat Giants’ league fixtures in WPL 2025Giants will play the opening game of the WPL against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Vadodara on February 14. They play two more matches at home before moving to Bengaluru and Lucknow for two matches each. Their final group game will be against Mumbai Indians in Brabourne on March 10.

The slow burn finish that took South into the Duleep Trophy final

North Zone’s delay tactics – they took 53 minutes to bowl the last 5.5 overs – didn’t bear fruit

Himanshu Agrawal08-Jul-2023Wet weather or dark skies interrupted the Duleep Trophy semi-final in Bengaluru 17 times across the four days. The intermittent monsoon rain had most people feeling lethargic, not least when play was to begin at 3.50 pm local time – after what would be the final delay – and South Zone requiring just another 32 runs for victory with six wickets in hand. The 20-member ground staff looked determined to get the game going, animatedly wiping, dusting and tending to various parts of the pitch and the outfield which had taken damage. And when play was finally ready to resume, the partnership for the fifth wicket, between young guns Tilak Varma and Ricky Bhui, stood at 42 off just 24 balls. Grey clouds lingered above, it seemed like rain could stop play any moment again, and South were running out of time. So Varma and Bhui knew it was now or never. And that produced a mistake. With the requirement reduced to 24, Bhui found the fine-leg fielder off the fifth ball of the 32nd over, bowled by Baltej Singh. South were five down, with Varma firm, and Washington Sundar in next. It was still very much possible.Even two balls later, when Prabhsimran Singh tumbled to his left to have Varma caught behind off Harshit Rana, it felt far from fatal. After all, Washington was there at the other end, and the incoming Sai Kishore was a handy lower-order batter.Even as North got those back-to-back wickets, their captain Jayant Yadav was trying to eat up precious time. The 33rd over took as long as ten minutes, with the next one by Harshit consuming just as much, as the bowlers took their time in tying shoelaces, digging up the heels of those shoes and waiting for the field to be set just right.Darkness was approaching, and the rain clouds were hanging right above but Jayant was in no hurry. After all, a draw would have been enough to push North into the final thanks to a first-innings lead of three runs.

****

Sai Kishore swung Baltej for six over long-on in the 34th over, which ended with South at 201 for 6. Only 14 more to get. There was comfort. It was a matter of two or three good hits, especially with Washington on strike to the start the 35th. I got into scribbling my report for the day, the first line of which already mentioned a four-wicket win for South, with Washington and Sai Kishore unbeaten. But Washington gave a catch to deep extra cover and the tension finally began to build. Suddenly, the small bunch of spectators, who had been hooting so loudly that vuvuzelas would have fallen short, were checked in their cheer. The new batter was No. 9 KV Sasikanth, who was under pressure to give the strike to the more dependable Sai Kishore. Momentum was tilting towards North with the late drama, and yet Jayant and Baltej took 12 minutes to get the 35th over done. They tried to slow the game down, and sitting in the dressing room, South’s captain Hanuma Vihari had no objection to such tactics.North Zone captain Jayant Yadav has a chat with umpire Rohan Pandit•PTI “We have come across a lot of games where teams are trying to delay the final few overs to take advantage, which is not wrong,” he said after the day’s play. “Even if I was the captain, I would have done the same thing… so anything to win, [but] to a point. I think it was fair. Overall, I wouldn’t complain.”During the course of that 35th over, which took longer than an entire innings break, Sasikanth dispatched a six over deep square leg. The partisan crowd found its voice again, yelling and whistling to remind everyone of their presence. On the field, the umpires had to separate a charged-up Sai Kishore and Harshit. And off it, even superstars Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya, who were working at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) there, were watching from the stands. So was the NCA’s head VVS Laxman.

****

Two more to win. Three wickets in hand. Sasikanth facing Baltej. Fielders in most directions are halfway towards the rope, except the man at midwicket, who was Jayant himself. Baltej bowls one full and straight, and Sasikanth chips to Jayant. Eight down.Or maybe it wasn’t. The umpires asked Sasikanth to wait while he was walking back, confirming from their colleague upstairs if Baltej’s front foot was within permissible limits. The next batter Vijaykumar Vyshak was halfway into the field of play, perhaps praying that it was indeed a no-ball so he won’t to face up to a fired up Baltej. The wait grew longer and longer, the stress multiplied – like it used to do in school when board exam results are out and we’re searching for our marks – before Sasikanth was given out.

****

While speaking after the third day’s play, Vyshak was asked if the three-run lead they had conceded would end up hurting South, considering the inclement weather and he said, “if somebody had got an extra boundary, or maybe if we could have stopped one boundary per bowler, it would have made a difference”.Now there he was with bat in hand. Two runs to win. Two wickets remaining.A nervous-looking Varma sat under an umbrella right below the journalists in the press box, as Vyshak took guard. All Vyshak had to do was negotiate Baltej’s three remaining deliveries. And he did that. Each time the ball hit the bat and dribbled away safely, the crowd rallied, with every roar louder than the previous one.

****

Jayant replaced Harshit with himself. Sai Kishore on strike, with two runs to get. The field tempts the batter to go over the top, and Jayant goes full on middle and off. Sai Kishore spots it early, and heaves the ball over long-on for another six. Game over.Yet again, those at the P3 stand screamed themselves hoarse. Their prayers were answered. The sound of their eruption must have travelled all the way to the nearby Cubbon Park. In the end, South squeezed home by two wickets under grey skies and dying light; the last 5.5 overs had taken 53 minutes, which was met with no protest. Even those 17 interruptions in play seemed worth it.

Captaincy test for Rishabh Pant as balanced Delhi Capitals eye maiden title

Capitals have a strong middle order to make up for Shreyas Iyer’s absence at the top

Shashank Kishore04-Apr-20212:29

Can Delhi Capitals go all the way this season?

Where they finished in 2020

Runners-up for the first time in IPL history, losing to eventual champions Mumbai Indians in a one-sided final. How did they get here? By virtue of finishing in the top-two, and utilising a second chance to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in Qualifier-2.

Potential XI

1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Prithvi Shaw, 3 Ajinkya Rahane, 4 Rishabh Pant (capt, wk), 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Shimron Hetmyer/Sam Billings, 7 Axar Patel, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Anrich Nortje, 11 Umesh YadavPS: Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje will be available for selection from the Capitals’ second game onwards, while Axar Patel may also miss out the opener after testing positive for Covid-19. This could mean, Steven Smith, who may otherwise tussle with a few other overseas personnel, could start straightaway.

Batting

Shreyas Iyer’s absence due to a shoulder injury leaves a hole in the batting. This puts that much more focus on the top order of Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkya Rahane. The prospect of being in T20I contention will keep Dhawan hungry. As such, he was their best batsman last season, both in terms of run-aggregate (618) and strike rate (144.73 – among those to have made at least 200 runs). His powerplay strike-rate of 139 was the fifth-best among those who faced at least 50 balls. Shaw, meanwhile, is coming off a chart-topping Vijay Hazare Trophy after being dropped from the Test team in Australia.Delhi Capitals’ squad for IPL 2021•ESPNcricinfo LtdShaw has worked in the interim with batting consultant Pravin Amre, with the focus being solely on being IPL-ready. Having been left out of the team mid-season at IPL 2020, a roaring Shaw, in the kind of form he’s in currently, will complement Dhawan. The middle-order seems settled with Rishabh Pant, the new captain, and Marcus Stoinis lending some batting muscle. There could be a toss-up between Shimron Hetmyer and Sam Billings for the finisher’s role.

Bowling

Chris Woakes returns after having missed the previous season due to personal reasons. His replacement, Nortje, has since gone on to establish himself as an out-and-out pace option, scuppering oppositions in the death overs alongside his South Africa team-mate Rabada. This means, Woakes may not find it easy to break into the first XI, even though he’s an excellent option nonetheless. In Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav, their new signing, they have two Indian fast bowlers, who could offer a lot of balance to the make-up of their bowling attack and some flexibility in terms of their four overseas players. Axar, coming off an excellent maiden Test season with the Indian team, is in form alongside R Ashwin, who is doing everything he can to be in white-ball contention for India once again. His seven wickets were the most in the powerplay last season, ahead of Axar and Washington Sundar. He was the joint-fifth best during this phase in the competition. Overall, he picked up 13 wickets in 15 games at an economy of just 7.66.

Young player to watch out for

Rishabh Pant was at an all-time low last season, struggling for any kind of consistency or rhythm to his batting. Because of that, he wasn’t even considered for India’s white-ball squads for the tour of Australia. But life seems to have come a full circle. He returns much fitter and with the form and confidence of a career-defining last six months – having played key roles in India’s back-to-back triumphs over Australia and England. He’s also not just returned to the white-ball set-up but has also established himself as a key middle-order cog for the T20 World Cup. No wonder then he’s been handed the Delhi Capitals captaincy. How will that added responsibility sit on him? It’ll make for compelling viewing.

Paratici wants to submit £52m bid to sign the new Mousa Dembele for Spurs

Mousa Dembélé is a star who exceeded all expectations during his time as a Tottenham Hotspur player, with the Belgian one of the most underrated players in their history.

He would go on to rack up a total of 249 appearances during his seven-year spell at the club, often catching the eye with his physicality and dazzling feet.

Despite his massive frame, you wouldn’t expect a player to easily get past the opposition, but Dembélé used to glide past his men in North London – with many of his former players singing his praises.

However, since his departure in 2019, the first-team have lacked the dominant and ball-playing option at the heart of the side, but that could be about to change in January.

With the window now on the horizon, Thomas Frank is starting to draw up a list of players who could improve the options at his disposal in the middle of the park.

Spurs’ hunt for a new midfielder in the January window

Over the last couple of days, Spurs have been one of the Premier League clubs linked with a potential winter deal to land Brighton & Hove Albion star Carlos Baleba.

Manchester United were massively touted with a deal to land the Cameroonian international in the summer, but were massively put off by his £100m valuation.

The same could be said for Frank’s side in January, with the Lilywhites wanting to land the 21-year-old, but are unwilling to fork out the current asking price for his signature.

However, he’s not the only midfielder in their sights at present, with Atlético Madrid talent Conor Gallagher once again appearing on their radar ahead of the upcoming window.

According to one Spanish outlet, the Englishman is available for a fee in the region of €60m (£52m) next month, with Fabio Paratici wanting to fork out such a fee for his services.

It also states that the player himself could be keen on a move back to the Premier League, but Diego Simeone’s side will only sanction a move if the asking price is met.

How Gallagher compares to Dembele

Spurs have often formed numerous rivalries in the Premier League over the years, with Chelsea just one of the sides in which they have had many fierce contests with.

Frank Lampard was a player who regularly starred against the Lilywhites, often leaving the fanbase wishing they had their own version of the English midfielder.

He featured against the club on 41 separate occasions, winning 22 of which and only losing eight times – often providing the difference in the London derby.

The now-retired star scored ten times within the aforementioned meetings, the third-best record against any time in his professional career – further showcasing his impact against Spurs.

Mixing a player of Lampard and Dembélé’s quality is always going to be a difficult ask, but it’s one that Gallagher has managed to do during recent months in Madrid.

He’s been a dominant player for Simeone’s men in LaLiga, with his underlying stats from the 2025/26 campaign showcasing his incredible ability at both ends of the pitch.

Gallagher has won 2.5 tackles and made 1.6 interceptions per 90 this season, with such numbers showcasing his dominant ball-winning presence that Dembélé possessed.

He’s also made 0.9 carries into the opposition box as part of his 2.7 progressive carries per 90, another component of his game that the Belgian demonstrated in North London.

However, his ability in possession has also caught the eye, with England U21 manager Lee Carsley previously stating that the midfielder is just “like Lampard”.

Gallagher has completed 88% of the passes he’s attempted to date, with 3.9 of which per 90 going into the final third – something which Lampard became known for with the Blues.

His crashing nature also handed the Spurs fans numerous moments of anguish, something which the Atletico star has demonstrated with his tally of one goal and 1.4 shots per 90.

£52m may appear to be a huge investment in the former Blues star, but his all-round stats in Spain’s top-flight this season showcase his elite-level output at both ends.

Should he merge the levels achieved by Dembélé and Lampard in the Premier League, it would be a stellar signing and one that can take Frank’s side to the next level.

Forget Simons: Spurs “liability” is now becoming the new Ndombele

Tottenham Hotspur did more than just end their interminable trophy drought when defeating Manchester United in the Europa League final last season; Ange Postecoglou opened up a road to the Champions League.

Given that Spurs finished 17th in the Premier League, this was quite the saving grace at the end of a campaign that left so much to be desired, and it ensured the Londoners could make a compelling case to potential signings like Xavi Simons.

While Tottenham supporters were overjoyed when signing the Dutch playmaker from RB Leipzig for £51m, after intense interest from Chelsea earlier in the summer, there’s no denying that the 21-year-old has yet to perform on English shores.

Given his big-money profile and the expectation upon his arrival, there’s a concern that Simons is echoing the likes of Tanguy Ndombele before him.

Simons' start to life at Spurs

Thomas Frank hasn’t yet established his vision at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with his side struggling for form in the final third. Simons has been a part of the problem, but it’s important to remember this is a young talent who has entered a team lacking offensive coherence.

In just two years in Germany, Simons scored 22 goals and supplied 24 assists across 78 matches. He was the difference-maker, and many Premier League clubs were keen.

Spurs won the race, and credit to them, but Simons has yet to prove he has what it takes to raise his game to the next level, thus prompting concerns that he might mimic Frenchman Ndombele, who became the Londoners’ club-record signing when joining from Lyon in a £54m deal in 2019.

Ndombele’s temperament and commitment were among the cruxes of his demise in English football, and Simons cannot be blamed for a lack of effort, but it’s a concern all the same, and one Frank will need to rectify quickly to get his side operating at full creative capacity.

The jury is still out for the Netherlands international, who is young and talented and settling into an outfit that lacks creative direction right now.

There’s actually another Lilywhites man with far more experience who might be deteriorating into Ndombele 2.0.

Spurs' new version of Ndombele

Frank has spoken of his players’ frustrations following their recent run of form, and this was clear to see last weekend when Fulham condemned Tottenham to yet another home defeat.

Pedro Porro was incensed, but the Portugal international might want to direct that anger inwards, given his spate of shambolic displays this year.

The 26-year-old has been in the English capital for almost three years now, and while he is among the most technically gifted players in the ranks, his awareness and accuracy in defensive phases could see him become a disappointment in a similar way to Ndombele, especially when considering he had such a furore about his signature in 2023 that Manchester City came sniffing around last year.

Porro is rudderless. Sofascore record that he has made five errors already in the Premier League this season, and he is among the most dribbled-past defenders in the division thus far.

In fairness, Porro sits among the top 16% of Premier League full-backs this season for shot-creating actions and the top 5% for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref, but his defensive work has been well below the desired standard.

But his lack of focus and misuse of his own athleticism led one Tottenham podcast host to brand him “an absolute liability” last season, and that’s only been underscored since then, with Frank now facing his own Ndombele-like conundrum in working out what to do with this talented but toiling star.

Porro has enjoyed some high points across his Tottenham career, but he’s been culpable for too many poor performances over the past couple of years, and in this, it is he and not the young Simons who is shaping into the London side’s new version of Ndombele.

Maresca must finally sell Chelsea "passenger" who was like Estevao at 18

This season is shaping up very nicely for Chelsea at the moment.

Enzo Maresca’s side are second in the Premier League and have the chance to cut Arsenal’s lead to just three points on Sunday.

Then in Europe, they sent a warning out to the rest of the sides in the Champions League with their thumping 3-0 win over Barcelona, a game in which Estevao shone once again.

Maresca and Co will have a chance to make Chelsea’s season even better once the transfer window reopens in just over a month, not just by signing players, but by selling one who once looked like Estevao when he was a youngster.

Estevao's sensational start to life at Chelsea

The expectations placed upon Estevao have been monumental for quite some time now, to the point that respected analyst Ben Mattinson labelled him a “future Ballon d’Or winner” months before Chelsea even signed him.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Since then, the hype surrounding him has only grown, thanks in large part to his fine form in Brazil, where he produced 17 goal involvements in 37 games last season.

Even so, few would have expected the start to this season he has had.

The youngster is not only playing a decent number of minutes, but he’s chipping in with important goals and has already shown a hugely impressive ability to get the fans on their feet.

So far, the 18-year-old has scored five goals and provided one assist for the Blues in 17 appearances, totalling 740 minutes.

That comes out to an excellent average of a goal involvement every 2.83 games, or every 123.33 minutes, which would be commendable for a seasoned veteran, let alone a teenager.

The Franca-born wonderkid has been so effective this year that fans and pundits have actually spoken about him being a particular threat to league-leading Arsenal ahead of Sunday’s game.

However, while Chelsea should be delighted with their new wonderkid, they also need to find a way to sell one of their biggest duds, who once looked like Estevao when he was first breaking through.

The Chelsea flop who needs to be sold

Chelsea have become quite good at moving on players they don’t want in recent years, but even then, a couple remain in the bomb squad who are proving tricky to sell, like Raheem Sterling.

The former Manchester City star joined the club in 2022, and while he’s had moments for the club in which he’s looked excellent, they’ve only ever been that, moments.

Moreover, while his tally of 19 goals and 15 assists in 81 games isn’t terrible, he’s never really put together a string of impressive performances, which is why he was allowed to join Arsenal on loan last year.

Unfortunately, that move only made the situation worse, as he ended up scoring just a single goal and providing five assists in 28 games for the Gunners, and was labelled a “passenger” by journalist Charles Watts.

Since returning to Stamford Bridge, the 30-year-old has been left to train separately from the first team, and with a weekly wage of £325k, that is far from ideal.

It is a serious shame that things have not worked out for the former England international, as before his move south, he was one of the best players in the league.

For example, during his time at the Etihad, he scored 131 goals and provided 86 assists in 339 appearances and won four league titles.

He was even a brilliant player for Liverpool, making his debut in the 11/12 season, but making his name in the 13/14 season, when, like Estevao now, he was just 18 years old.

In that season, the Kingston-born phenom managed to rack up an incredible tally of ten goals and seven assists in 38 appearances, totalling 2535 minutes, which is an average of a goal involvement every 2.23 games, or every 149.11 minutes.

It wasn’t just the goals, though, as, like the Brazilian, he was a serious threat with the ball at his feet, thanks in part to his speed and close control.

Ultimately, Sterling will go down as a legend of the Premier League, but for the sake of all parties, Chelsea need to sell him in January, even if they barely get anything.

Liverpool will be 'absolutely fine' without Ibrahima Konate as Jamie Carragher tells club not to panic over defender's expiring contract

Jamie Carragher insists Liverpool should not panic over Ibrahima Konate's future, saying his former club will be "absolutely fine" if the defender leaves on a free transfer next summer. The France international has less than a year remaining on his contract and it remains to be seen whether he will agree an extension ahead of the January transfer window opening.

  • Contract situation continues to drag on for Bayern & Real Madrid-linked Konate

Konate has established himself as a key fixture in Liverpool’s starting XI following his move from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in 2021. The 26-year-old has formed a strong partnership with Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the Reds’ defence, making 147 appearances in all competitions and scoring six goals.

However, speculation remains rife regarding Konate’s future ahead of the January transfer window opening in less than two months’ time. The centre-back is into the final year on his current deal and it is up in the air as to whether he will ink fresh terms at Anfield.

German newspaper are reporting that German giants Bayern Munich are tentatively weighing up whether to rival La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid by making a move for Konate, who is eligible to arrange a free transfer in January.

Liverpool told they will not 'fall apart' should Konate leave the club

But while rumours continue to swirl regarding Konate’s contract situation, Liverpool have been told they will not "fall apart" if they are forced into the transfer market to replace him.

Speaking to the Carragher – who made 737 appearances for Liverpool, winning 11 trophies – said: "I’d like him [Konate] to stay but if he doesn’t stay, Liverpool will sign someone else. Liverpool won’t fall apart if Konate leaves.

"He's not Virgil van Dijk. He's a good centre-back who you hope will sign, but if he doesn’t want to sign, Liverpool will be absolutely fine. He's a very good centre-back, he's a title winner at Liverpool, he's played in the Champions League final against Real Madrid. He's obviously a quality centre-back.

"It's not poor management [if he goes for free]. You can't physically make somebody sign a contract. Then it's your decision, do you keep him to the length of his contract or do you sell him?"

  • Reds legend Carragher wants to see more consistency from Konate

In a run which saw Liverpool lose four consecutive Premier League games against Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Manchester United and Brentford, Konate was one of a number of players whose performances had notably dipped.

However, the ex-Sochaux man has since played a key role in helping Arne Slot’s side get back on track with victories over Aston Villa in the league and Xabi Alonso’s Real in the Champions League, with Carragher now challenging him to keep improving over the next few weeks.

"It's still only a couple of games," said Carragher, when asked about Konate’s recent displays. "He hasn't had a great start to the season and he needs to show a bit more consistency.

“He was fantastic against Real Madrid and he needs to keep that going over the next few months, it can't just be two games on the bounce.

"There’s no secrets [to picking up your form]. It’s about working harder and you become more professional. It’s on your mind constantly that you want to get back into good form and every you think tiny detail will make a difference, whether that’s what you eat, what time you go to sleep, it’s just becoming an ultra-professional on and off the pitch."

Up next for Liverpool: A trip to Man City for Pep's 1,000th game

Konate will be hoping to continue his and Liverpool’s recent revival when they travel to Manchester City in a mouth-watering league fixture on Sunday. Pep Guardiola’s side have been in terrific form of late, losing just one of their last 13 games in all competitions.

The match will be extra special for Guardiola as he prepares to celebrate his 1,000th game in management against a Liverpool side who have been his biggest nemesis during his trophy-laden period in English football.

Ahead of the match, City manager Guardiola admitted he misses competing against former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, saying: "In terms of Jurgen's side or Pep's side, I think we respected each other.

"I had the feeling that Jurgen gave me a lot and I miss him. He gave me a lot in sense of, to beat that guy, how much I have to think and work and do it, to make it better."

Leroy Sane heading back to the Bundesliga? Ex-Bayern Munich star 'open' to return to his old club as he targets 'nice story' at end of his career

Leroy Sane has hinted at a possible return to his boyhood club Schalke, saying he could imagine ending his career where it all began. The former Bayern Munich winger, who made a switch to Galatasaray in the summer, called the idea of a Schalke reunion 'exciting', but admitted that it will not happen anytime soon.

  • Sane hints at emotional Schalke reunion

After leaving Bayern on a free transfer, the German international is now making his mark in Turkey with Galatasaray, but he has not ruled out a return to the Bundesliga in the future. The winger came through Schalke’s academy before joining Manchester City in 2016. He played a crucial role in Pep Guardiola's setup, helping them win two Premier League titles, an FA Cup triumph, and two League Cup successes before making a move to Munich in 2020. While Sane left Germany after five years with the Bundesliga giants in July, he admitted he still feels a strong connection to Schalke, who are experiencing a resurgence after years of misery, sitting second in the second-tier after 11 matches.

Return to Schalke not anytime soon

In an interview with , the 29-year-old spoke openly about the idea of returning to his boyhood club, calling it something that 'would be exciting.' Reflecting on his memories with his former club Bayern, he shared how he and teammate Leon Goretzka, who also came through Schalke, often talked about their time in Gelsenkirchen.

"I had a great time there. Playing in the arena was always a lot of fun – it was my first step in professional football," he said. "That's why I'm basically open to anything. That would be a nice story, of course. We'll see where my path leads me. If an opportunity arises at some point, I'd certainly be open to it.

"I was just talking to Leon Goretzka about it the other day. I'm really happy that things are going so well there. They've had a strong start and are right up there at the top. I hope it stays that way all season. The atmosphere is fantastic, you can feel it from the outside too. The team and the fans have a great rapport, and the fans have been incredibly loyal over the last few years. Seeing them march to every home game and fill the stadium – it's impressive. I hope they'll be back in the Bundesliga next season."

He added to : "I think that would be a great story, but I still have a little time. I’m just only turning 30!"

Sane came through Schalke’s academy and made his senior debut in 2014 before earning a move to Manchester City two years later. Back then, Schalke were competing in Europe. Since then, the club has been in decline, dropping down to the 2. Bundesliga.

  • Sane starting to find rhythm after slow Galatasaray start

The German winger also opened up about his move from Bayern to Galatasaray, saying he has settled in well after a slow start in Turkey.

Sane endured a rough start in Istanbul, struggling to find a consistent spot in the starting 11. He was an unused substitute in Galatasaray’s 1-0 Champions League win over Liverpool. Off the pitch, he made headlines during Oktoberfest after reportedly being provoked by a group of Bayern fans inside a crowded beer tent.

But the 29-year-old is starting to find his feet. "I had to settle in first. I had an adjustment period, so things didn't quite go as planned on the pitch at the beginning," the German admitted. "I had to get to know my teammates, and they had to get to know me, how to interact on the pitch, how to play together. That took a little while. But now, in the last few games, I'm very happy with my performances and how I've played. I want to carry this momentum forward and keep going."

    What's next for Leroy Sane?

Sane has found his rhythm after a slow start at Galatasaray and will be hoping to keep that momentum going as the club looks to extend its lead at the top. The winger has scored three goals and provided two assists in 13 appearances so far. Galatasaray currently sit first in the Super Lig with nine wins from 11 matches and are gearing up to face Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday.
