Aaron: 'Axar ahead of Samson? I do not understand it'

Despite losing five wickets inside 15 overs, India’s reluctance to send in Samson raised questions

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Sep-20252:57

Chopra questions India’s batting order logic

India’s continuous shuffle to their batting order came under the scanner after they were restricted to 168 for 6 in their Super Four match against Bangladesh in Asia Cup 2025. After being inserted, India were 72 for 0 in the powerplay, and 112 for 2 after 11, but could score only 56 for 4 in the last nine overs. On ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out, Aakash Chopra called India’s batting order “inexplicable”, while Varun Aaron was left “perplexed” by Sanju Samson not coming out to bat at all. After Rishad Hossain dismissed Shubman Gill in the seventh over, Shivam Dube came in at No. 3 and holed out to long-off in the same over for 2 off three balls.”When Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma were batting, it looked like a very good batting surface – you can play through the line. You could actually hit wherever you wanted. But then a wicket falls, and then the batting order is inexplicable,” Chopra said. “What India were trying to do with the batting order is baffling to say the least. [Bangladesh] bowled alright but we [India] just compounded our problems with a very weird batting line-up. I cannot wrap my head around it.”Related

Sloppy but unbeaten India storm into Asia Cup final

Aaron echoed those thoughts: “They thought they could get Dube on to take down the spinners. But Sanju Samson is another option; he could have been slotted in early today. We know how he enjoys [batting] slightly up top.”At the post-match presentation, Suryakumar explained the logic behind the move. “Looking at their bowling line-up – they had a left-arm spinner [Nasum Ahmed], they had a legspinner [Rishad] – Dube was a perfect match-up at that moment. And his entry point was perfect – seven to 15 overs. So we took that chance. It did not go well, but in the games ahead, we might try doing that [again].”India have been flexible with their batting order throughout the tournament, with their batting coach Sitanshu Kotak saying “everyone is prepared to bat at any number”. A reason behind that is to maintain a left-right combination at the crease. When Samson opened the innings before the Asia Cup, the No. 3 position was taken by Suryakumar Yadav or Tilak Varma, depending on whether Samson or Abhishek fell.Rishad Hossain picked up two wickets•AFP/Getty Images

Since Gill’s return to the top of the order, Samson has batted only once at No. 3 in five games – against Oman. Against Bangladesh, even after Gill got out, a left-hand batter, Dube, came in. Even at the fall of the fifth wicket in the 15th over, India held back Samson and sent in Axar Patel, who made 10 not out off 15 balls.”Axar ahead of Samson? I do not understand it,” Aaron said. “The man [Samson] got three T20I centuries last year, you’ve got to cut him some slack.”There’s not much difference in the strike rates of the Indian batters. It is not like we have four batters who strike above 150 and have a couple who can only play run a ball. Every batter in that top eight can bat at a very high strike rate. I don’t see any motive behind so much chopping and changing in the batting line-up.”Dube’s spin-hitting prowess also has been on the wane, raising questions about the move to send him to take on Rishad. While he averaged 73.4 and struck at 166.1 against spin in T20 cricket from January 2023 to April 2024, since then those numbers read 21.1 and 121.8.”I am also thinking, can you actually take a bowler down and throw him out of the attack in the seventh over?” Chopra said. “You can maintain left-right combination but the game still has 13 overs to go. Dube is the guy [to bat] if Rishad and Nasum are bowling in the 14th-15th over. You can then say, ‘This is the game.’ That will change everything that would unfold, because the options [for a bowling captain] are either exhausted or ones you can’t use. So he would be searching for answers. But in the seventh over, they are not falling behind.”

Fewer touches than Pope: Howe must bin Newcastle star who won just 3 duels

Newcastle United won their second Champions League game in a row on Tuesday night, beating Portuguese giants Benfica 3-0 at St James’ Park.

It was a clinical display from Eddie Howe’s men, which helped the Englishman to his first win over a Jose Mourinho side since 2015, as per Transfermarkt.

The performance itself was sensational from the Magpies. Benfica played well in the early stages, with Dodi Lukebakio posing a real threat down the left-hand side. Yet, Anthony Gordon’s opener just past the half-hour mark put the Magpies ahead. The England star got on the end of Jacob Murphy’s low cross across the penalty area.

It was second-half substitute Harvey Barnes who added the second and third goals for Newcastle. His first was a superb strike after getting on the end of a huge throw from Nick Pope. Barnes carried the ball into Benfica’s penalty area and smashed home via the post.

His second strike was another well-worked goal. A slick one-two from Gordon and Nick Woltemade created space for the England international to drive into. He played Barnes in behind, with the substitute striking the ball first time and bagging his second of the night.

It was an excellent win from Newcastle, with midfield pair Bruno Guimaraes and Lewis Miley particularly shining.

Guimaraes and Miley’s performance vs. Benfica

It was a hardworking performance from the two Newcastle midfielders against Benfica. For Guimaraes, he simply maintained a standard expected of him now, having garnered a reputation as one of the top midfielders in the Premier League.

The Brazilian was everywhere against Mourinho’s side, winning four duels and making seven recoveries. In possession, he was constantly picking the ball up and driving forward, causing real issues carrying from deeper areas.

He also played a wonderful pass to Murphy, which led to Gordon’s goal.

The role Miley had was arguably harder. He was filling in for Sandro Tonali and Joelinton, both of whom are key players in the Magpies’ midfield. The homegrown star coped well with the pressure. He was metronomic in midfield, completing 37 from 41 passes and creating one chance, as well as working hard without the ball.

Scott Wilson, chief sports writer at the Northern Echo, noticed their top performances. He gave them each an 8/10 for their efforts on Tuesday night, explaining that Guimaraes put in a ‘fine midfield display’ and Miley ‘deserves more game time’ after that showing.

However, the other man in Newcastle’s midfield struggled more than their pivot.

The Newcastle midfielder who struggled vs Benfica

Howe’s side were certainly hamstrung by the lack of midfield firepower at St James’ Park. Tonali was only a substitute after suffering from illness in the past few days, and Joelinton was rested following several starts.

That gave an opportunity to summer signing Jacob Ramsey to play from the start. It was the 24-year-old’s first start at St James’ Park, after a few injury issues derailed his start to life in the North East.

It was certainly a tough night at the office for the former Aston Villa star. Unlike his midfield partners, Ramsey struggled to get into the game, unable to get a real grasp and create things in a fairly advanced midfield role.

Wilson was certainly a little more critical of the Magpies’ number 41. He gave him a 6/10 rating for his efforts, explaining that he ‘wasn’t really able to dictate play’. although he did note he brought ‘plenty of energy and effort’ to the middle of the park.

Indeed, some of his stats from the game show how disappointing a performance it was from the 24-year-old. He had fewer touches than Newcastle goalkeeper Pope, with 32 compared to the shot-stopper’s 39.

Ramsey lost the ball seven times and only won three duels.

Next up for Newcastle is a tough assignment at home against a well-drilled Fulham side. With Tonali and Joelinton both potentially back in contention to start, it will be interesting to see if Ramsey is kept in the starting lineup by Howe.

His struggles against Mourinho’s side on Tuesday might well mean the Newcastle boss brings back one of his first-choice midfielders, who can help control the game more. It was certainly something Ramsey struggled with at times in the Champions League.

There are options waiting in the wings if Howe decides to go down this route. It is certainly a big call ahead of a must-win game in the top flight.

Ecclestone, Jones help England level series with rain-affected win

India trip up against spinners in shortened game before hosts ease home on damp evening at Lord’s

Valkerie Baynes19-Jul-2025England’s spinners assured their side of a manageable target before Amy Jones took them across the line in a rain-hit second ODI at Lord’s to level the series with India at 1-1.After a four-hour rain delay reduced the match to 29 overs per side, England’s three-pronged spin attack restricted India to 143 for 8, sharing six wickets between them as Sophie Ecclestone led the way with 3 for 27. Linsey Smith took two and Charlie Dean one.Another heavy downpour in the evening sent players running for cover with England 102 for 1 after 18.4 overs chasing 144 and, after a delay of about 20 minutes, their target was reduced to 115 in 24 overs, giving them 5.2 overs in which to score 13 runs.Kranti Goud bowled Nat Sciver-Brunt with the second ball after play resumed but Jones, unbeaten on 46, and Sophia Dunkley, with 9 not out, saw England home by eight wickets with 18 balls to spare.Smriti Mandhana top-scored for India with a 51-ball 42 and Deepti Sharma was their next-best with an unbeaten 30 off 34 balls but no other batter passed 16, although it could have been worse had the hosts capitalised on five further chances which went begging in the field.Tammy Beaumont started England’s run-chase brightly, easing to 18 off eight balls after the first three overs. If there was an air of tension surrounding the match as these sides returned to the scene of Deepti’s run out of Dean backing up in 2022, the band was pulled tighter during an umpire review for obstructing the field against Beaumont in the fifth over.Beaumont clipped a Deepti delivery towards midwicket then turned back as Jemimah Rodrigues fired the ball back to the striker’s end. Beaumont’s left foot was grounded inside her crease as she moved her right leg forward and the ball ricocheted off her pad as wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh threw her arms up in appeal but Beaumont was adjudged not out.Beaumont couldn’t relax, however, Deepti pulling out of her delivery stride in her next over. Beaumont, the non-striker, recovered her ground with relative ease.England had been 37 without loss after a truncated six-over powerplay, compared to India’s 25 for 1 at the corresponding point in their innings, but India got their first wicket in the 11th when Sneh Rana got one to keep low as it slid under Beaumont’s attempted reverse and hit her in line. Beaumont reviewed but ball-tracking predicted it to hit leg stump.Amy Jones tonks one over Deepti Sharma’s head•ECB/Getty ImagesJones and Sciver-Brunt had put on an unbroken stand of 48 off 50 balls for the second wicket when the rain returned, eight balls shy of the 20 overs required to constitute a match.Earlier, the sun was blazing as seamer Em Arlott celebrated removing Pratika Rawal with just her fourth delivery, a gem of a yorker on the base of off stump. The hosts introduced spin in the ninth over with Dean conceding nine before Ecclestone struck with a return catch off the second ball of the 10th to remove Harleen Deol. After seeing a couple of half-chances missed off her bowling, Ecclestone took matters into her own hands again in her second over, pushing a faster ball through Harmanpreet Kaur’s attempt to cut and hitting the top of off stump.Harmanpreet’s dismissal for just 7 continued a lean tour for her, in which she has scored 89 runs all up from six innings across formats with a highest score of 26.India’s woes deepened through Dean’s caught-and-bowled dismissal of Rodrigues to make it 69 for 4 for the tourists in the 15th over. It should have been five down two balls later but Dean spilled a more straightforward chance off Ghosh.Ecclestone ensured the mistake wasn’t too costly however when she trapped Ghosh lbw in the next over. That brought Deepti to the crease and as she faced Dean, there was a murmur of reminiscence from the crowd. Dean beat the bat with her first two deliveries before Deepti got off strike with a cut through point.Smith almost did herself a mischief when she dived after a firm drive through the covers off Mandhana and face-planted the turf at the edge of the square, but she bounced back to combine with Dean in Mandhana’s downfall. After watching Mandhana’s perfectly placed sweep pierce deep backward square and deep midwicket to reach the boundary, Smith drew a top edge that sailed towards cover, where Dean took a tumbling catch, drop-kicking the ball away in celebration.Smith claimed her second when pinned had Arundhati Reddy lbw and Arlott finished as she began, knocking back Rana’s off stump. The teams meet again in the final match of India’s tour at Durham on Tuesday.

Another injury blow for Rafael Leao? AC Milan coach explains star winger's early substitution in Serie A draw against Atalanta

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has calmed fears surrounding Rafael Leao after the attacker was substituted early in the 1-1 draw against Atalanta on Monday. While the Portugal winger felt some discomfort during the game, Allegri insists his early exit was merely a precautionary measure following his recent fitness struggles.

  • Leao withdrawn at half-time as injury fears return

Milan were forced into a precautionary change at half-time during their 1-1 Serie A draw against Atalanta, with the Portuguese international substituted after feeling discomfort in his hip. The 26-year-old forward, who had scored four goals in his last three appearances, was replaced by Christopher Nkunku as coach Allegri looked to avoid aggravating the issue.

Allegri’s decision to remove Leao sparked concern, especially with crucial fixtures on the horizon. Leao has been struggling with fitness issues since he sustained a calf injury in their first competitive game of the season in August. He then missed the first four Serie A matches before making his return in late August. Leao was then released early from Portugal’s national team camp by head coach Roberto Martinez after suffering another setback. The winger sat out the World Cup qualifier against Hungary and returned to Milan to follow a tailored rehabilitation program.

Allegri explains Leao substitution and injury updates

Speaking to media after the match, Allegri clarified that Leao’s substitution was a precautionary move, saying: "He had a hip problem. Then at the end of the first half he wasn’t feeling great, so I decided to take him off anyway because the team needed fresh players. Rafa wasn’t getting going, so I decided to take him off."

Allegri also provided updates on striker Santiago Gimenez and defender Pervis Estupinan, both of whom have been managing knocks. “Gimenez is a bit of a knock, we’ll see about Leao, but it shouldn’t be anything special. We should also have Estupinan against Roma. These are ten days where we need to grit our teeth a bit, and then after the break we’ll start again with all the players.

“We’re having a few injuries at this point, but the team is responding well. The lads should be happy with their performance in Bergamo.”

  • Allegri reflects on Milan’s display against Atalanta

The game at the New Balance Arena began brightly for Milan, as Samuele Ricci’s deflected half-volley put them ahead in the fourth minute. However, Atalanta struck back through Ademola Lookman’s powerful finish in the 35th minute and the sides could not be separated over the second-half and left with a point each.

The Milan boss admitted frustration over his side’s first-half errors but was pleased with the team’s response after the break. “We were forced to defend because we made a lot of technical mistakes on outbound balls. The second half was a good one, with plenty of chances to score. We made bad decisions in the final 20 meters, where we absolutely must improve,” Allegri stated.

Despite conceding what he called an “avoidable goal,” Allegri saw encouraging signs in Milan’s approach. “We need to improve our scoring percentage and our passing choices in the final 20 meters. This team needs to be more confident than they are. The lads should be happy with their performance in Bergamo. We’re extending our positive streak.”

Atalanta, who pressed aggressively throughout, forced several crucial saves from Mike Maignan as Milan managed to hold firm under pressure.

Leao’s season form and Milan’s Serie A outlook

Leao’s early exit overshadowed what has been an efficient start to the campaign. With three starts and four goals across all competitions since his return from injury, he has been central to Milan’s attacking output, thriving in a role closer to goal and showcasing improved efficiency. His fitness will be key as Allegri’s side faces a crucial stretch of fixtures before the international break.

The draw in Bergamo marked Milan’s second consecutive stalemate, following another 2-2 result against Pisa. With Napoli and Roma both in strong form, Milan’s margin for error is shrinking. However, the Rossoneri remain well-placed in second with 18 points from nine games, a solid foundation as they continue to rebuild under Allegri’s system.

“Now on Sunday we have a good match against Roma,” Allegri said. “We need to grit our teeth, stay compact, and finish this run of matches strongly before the break.”

Attention now turns to Sunday’s high-powered encounter against Roma at San Siro. Allegri is optimistic about having both Leao and Gimenez available for selection, with further medical tests confirming that the winger’s hip issue is minor. The upcoming fixture carries major implications in the Serie A title race, with Milan hoping to close the gap on Napoli and maintain pressure on Roma and Inter.

Chelsea identify Real Madrid star as top target with BlueCo ready to pay asking price

Chelsea have identified a Real Madrid star as one of their top targets for 2026 already, with BlueCo prepared to meet the player’s asking price, according to a new report.

Enzo Maresca’s side ranked among the Premier League’s biggest-spending teams during the summer window, splashing close to £290 million, but their array of player sales meant that Chelsea actually recorded a small profit.

The west Londoners, and quite rightly so, have earned a reputation for being one of England’s most prolific selling clubs, and if Bayern Munich trigger Nicolas Jackson’s obligation to buy clause next summer, they’ll stand to earn a further £56 million on top of his record-breaking loan fee.

Interestingly, Jackson could face off against Chelsea in the Champions League this evening, with Vincent Kompany handed a dilemma over playing the Senegalese against his parent club.

Chelsea'sNicolasJacksonis pictured on the substitutes bench before the match

The 24-year-old’s potential sale would do wonders to fund Chelsea’s 2026 summer plans, and they have a few key items on the agenda already. If Maresca cannot sign a centre-back in January, it’s something they’ll reportedly visit later in the new year.

Elsewhere in the squad, a fresh claim has surfaced that Real Madrid star Eduardo Camavinga is firmly on Chelsea’s radar.

Chelsea identify Eduardo Camavinga as top target for 2026

According to reports from Spain, Chelsea are eyeing Camavinga as one of their priority signings for 2026.

Eduardo Camavinga in action for Real Madrid.

The Frenchman is yet to make a single appearance under Xabi Alonso this season after just returning from an ankle injury, but was on the bench for Real’s 2-1 win over Marseille in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Valued at around £52 million, it is believed that Chelsea are prepared to pay that price for Camavinga, and if any club were to offer it, Real would also be happy to negotiate his exit.

Would Eduardo Camavinga fit in at Chelsea?

Maresca already boasts a star-studded midfield of Enzo Fernández, Moises Caicedo, the returning Roméo Lavia and Dario Essugo — although the latter is set to be sidelined for a lengthy period after surgery.

The 22-year-old is a player of real quality when fit and available, but Camavinga’s worrying injury record comes as a real warning to BlueCo.

He made just 35 appearances in all competitions last season — missing nearly 30 games through a combination of knee, muscle and hamstring problems — and the last thing Chelsea need is an injury-prone player who’s barely available.

That being said, Camavinga has also attracted huge praise for his performances at the Bernabeu.

Summerville really rates him: Leeds have their own O'Reilly in 19-year-old star

Leeds United endured a difficult end to the summer transfer window because they failed to add the extra winger that they were looking for on deadline day last week.

The Whites reportedly felt they met the asking price for Fulham winger Harry Wilson to come in and bolster Daniel Farke’s options on the right flank in the Premier League this season.

However, the Cottagers had a late change of heart and decided that they wanted to keep hold of the Wales international, which meant that the Championship champions did not make any additions to their squad on deadline day.

The end of the transfer window has not put an end to transfer rumours, though, as the Whites were recently linked with a move for Nico O’Reilly.

The latest on Leeds United's interest in Nico O'Reilly

CaughtOffside reported last Friday that Leeds United are one of a number of teams interested in a potential swoop to sign the Manchester City midfielder to bolster their squad.

The outlet claimed that Bayer Leverkusen, Nottingham Forest, Brighton, and Lyon are all keeping tabs on his situation at The Etihad ahead of a possible move to snap him up in a future window.

However, CaughtOffside added that Manchester City would like to keep hold of their 20-year-old academy graduate. They are not looking to cash in on him any time soon, which suggests that a January transfer is an unrealistic prospect.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Farke and Leeds, however, may not need to pursue a deal for the Cityzens starlet because they have a young talent who could be their own version of O’Reilly in Charlie Crew.

Why Charlie Crew is a promising talent for Leeds United

The Welsh central midfielder is currently on loan at Doncaster Rovers in League One, gaining valuable experience that will stand him in good stead moving forward.

Crew, like O’Reilly, is a versatile star who can play in defence, in defensive midfield, or as a central midfielder, per Transfermarkt, which means that they both offer a similar level of versatility.

The 19-year-old, who is a year younger than the Manchester City star, may not have emerged as a Premier League-grade talent yet, but he has shown promising signs in his short career already, winning promotion to League One with Doncaster Rovers last season.

As you can see in the table above, Crew caught the eye with his contributions on and off the ball in League Two in the second half of the 2024/25 campaign.

Interestingly, O’Reilly ranked within the top 7% of his positional peers in the Premier League for successful dribbles (1.54) per 90 and completed 60% of his attempted dribbles.

This shows that O’Reilly and Crew are both flexible defence and midfield hybrids who can get their team up the pitch with effective dribbling and ball-carrying, whilst they can also both put their foot in to make tackles.

In the summer of 2024, Crysencio Summerville told supporters to “look out” for the Wales international and described him as a “really good” talent, having trained with him at Leeds.

Crew, therefore, could be Farke’s own version of O’Reilly if he decides to recall him in January or reassess where he is at next season after his time in League One with Doncaster, as he is a similar profile of player and another young talent with seemingly big potential.

    'He's eating your toast'

The fight started with Vinicius Junior calling Koke a "f***ing crybaby", which the Atletico star laughed off. The Madrid winger then launched yet another attack as he said: "You always, always talk to the press. Everything I say to you, you say to the press."

Now, Koke joined the fight by pointing at Vincius' team-mate Kylian Mbappe, calling him "the best". In response, the Selecao star once again said: "Of course, but play with me and we'll win more."

Smith's triumph: Australia surge to clinical 2-0 series victory

The visitors had few alarms as Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne knocked off the target before lunch on the fourth day

Australia 414 (Carey 156, Smith 131, Jayasuriya 5-151) and 75 for 1 (Khawaja 27*, Labuschagne 26*) beat Sri Lanka 257 (Kusal 85, Chandimal 74, Starc 3-37) & 231 (Mathews 76, Kusal 50, Kuhnemann 4-63, Lyon 4-84) by 9 wicketsSteven Smith completed an outstanding series at the helm with his 200th Test catch, but he wasn’t needed with the bat as Australia clinically sealed a rare series victory in Asia early on day four. After wrapping up Sri Lanka’s second innings within the opening 20 minutes of the day’s play, Australia only lost opener Travis Head in pursuit of the 75-run victory target to win the second Test by nine wickets and sweep the series 2-0.Related

Usman Khawaja, who set the tone with a double century in the first Test, finished unbeaten on 27 while Marnus Labuschagne made a fluent 26 not out in a confidence boost with his place in the side attracting some scrutiny.Frontline spinners Matthew Kuhnemann and Nathan Lyon claimed four wickets apiece in Sri Lanka’s second innings to cap their brilliant series. They combined to take 30 of the 40 Sri Lankan wickets in the series. It was Australia’s first Test series victory in Sri Lanka since 2011 having lost four of five matches across the 2016 and 2022 tours. Australia’s only other series victory in Asia since 2011 was in Pakistan three years ago.The only concern for Australia will be the fitness of Smith, who looked sore in the field in what might be an aggravation of an elbow injury that he suffered ahead of the series in the BBL. But he remained on the field and was padded to bat.Sri Lanka’s hopes of setting a tricky chase rested entirely with Kusal Mendis, who had raced to 48 in a counterattack late on day three. Resuming at 211 for 8 with a lead of 54, Sri Lanka promoted Lahiru Kumara to No. 10 after he survived 26 balls in the first innings in a 33-run last wicket partnership with Mendis.Mendis on his second delivery of the day’s play reached his second half-century of the match, but he fell two balls later to vicious bounce from Lyon as a top-edge ballooned to fine-leg where Smith became the first Australian to claim 200 Test catches. With Sri Lanka’s hopes dashed, the only remaining interest centered on whether Kuhnemann or Lyon would finish with a five-wicket haul. Lyon had two big lbw shouts on Nishan Peiris turned down by umpire Adrian Holdstock as Australia reviewed unsuccessfully.Lyon’s frustrations grew after Kumara edged low down to Beau Webster at second slip only for replays to show it didn’t carry. Webster took it upon himself to end the innings when – just like late on day three – he unfurled his offspin and clean bowled Kumara on his first delivery. It completed a strong allround match for Webster, who showcased his versatility with the ball and he also took several sharp catches.Kusal Mendis’ half-century was ended by a top edge•Getty Images

Desperately needing early wickets, skipper Dhananjaya de Silva went straight to his offspinners and Peiris produced sharp spin, but Head pounced when the bowlers missed their lengths. After a nervous start, Head whacked Ramesh Mendis down the ground before Khawaja hit a couple of boundaries as Australia started to cruise. De Silva had to quickly resort to left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, who promptly dismissed Head off the top-edge.With just 37 runs needed, there wasn’t a lot to gain for Labuschagne who had missed out in this series amid a century drought stretching back to the 2023 Ashes. He eased his nerves with a superb drive to the boundary and he whacked another off Jayasuriya to bring up Australia’s 50. After a tough tour, Labuschagne had the satisfaction of hitting the winning run as Australia celebrated their first clean sweep in Asia since beating Bangladesh 2-0 in 2006.Contests between the teams in Sri Lanka had been traditionally competitive, but Australia flipped the script with consecutive ruthless performances that felt out of the Steve Waugh era.Their selections worked well and Australia had contributions across the board with four centurions and an attack that was all over Sri Lanka’s struggling batting-order.Lone quick Mitchell Starc built on his outstanding record in Sri Lanka, while Kuhnemann claimed a series-high 16 wickets at 17.18 to prove why he has been deemed so valuable in these conditions. He also showed plenty of grit to play through a sore thumb he injured in a BBL game on January 16.After having little to do during the seam-dominated India-series, Lyon as expected shouldered plenty of responsibility and finished with 14 wickets at 22.5.But this battle for the Warne-Muraliduran Trophy will be remembered for stand-in skipper Smith. He issued a reminder on his mastery in Asian conditions with brilliant back-to-back tons as his renaissance continues. Smith led superbly in the absence of Pat Cummins with his tactical nous coming to the fore as he made all the right moves in the field. In contrast, Sri Lanka were bitterly disappointing in a sad end for retiring opener Dimuth Karunaratne as they slumped to their fourth straight Test defeat.

Better move than Grealish: Everton open talks to land Premier League star

Everton’s summer transfer window has been defined by a need to strengthen both in attack and defence.

After the addition of Jack Grealish on loan from Manchester City, attention has now turned to shoring up the back line.

The Toffees were caught short in their opening Premier League defeat away at Leeds, with James Garner deputising at left-back in Vitaliy Mykolenko’s absence.

Jarrad Branthwaite’s injury further compounds the situation, leaving manager David Moyes eager to explore options that could reinforce the defensive spine of his team.

To complement a backline that conceded only 44 times last season, the joint fourth-best defensive record in the league, Everton must identify players capable of adding both experience and quality at the back.

Against this backdrop, Everton have begun exploring defensive reinforcements who could address immediate gaps while providing long-term stability.

Everton hold talks over Manchester City defender

According to TEAMtalk, Everton have entered exploratory talks regarding a move for Manchester City defender, Nathan Ake.

Described as an “exceptional guy” by Pep Guardiola, the 30-year-old is being considered as a potential addition to help strengthen a defence that Moyes is keen to build on.

Manchester City's Nathan Ake

Manchester City are reportedly open to selling the player, largely because of the depth of their squad and recent acquisitions in defence, including Rayan Ait Nouri.

Guardiola’s known preference for a smaller squad makes a move more feasible, though any transfer is likely to require a substantial fee, with City valuing the player in the £30-35m range.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

While a loan deal with an obligation-to-buy clause could be considered, Everton cannot pursue that route due to rules that prevent them from taking two players on loan from the same club in one window, as they have already signed Grealish.

The defender is reportedly eager for consistent first-team football and is understood to prefer a club competing in European competitions, which could complicate negotiations, especially considering Newcastle hold an interest.

However, Everton are determined to find a solution before the window closes.

What Nathan Ake can bring to Everton

Ake offers versatility because he is capable of playing at both centre-back and left-back and brings extensive Premier League experience.

Since joining City from Bournemouth for £41m in 2020, he has been a reliable squad player, regularly competing with the likes of Ruben Dias, John Stones, Manuel Akanji, and Josko Gvardiol for minutes.

Last season, he featured 29 times in the league, showcasing his composure on the ball and technical reliability.

According to FBref, he ranks in the 99th percentile for pass completion rate at 94.4% and the 95th percentile for progressive passes per 90 minutes, with 6.17 per match.

His progressive carries per 90 also place him in the 90th percentile, highlighting an ability to advance the ball effectively from deep positions.

Despite these attributes, the player is less remarkable in traditional defensive metrics, ranking in the bottom 20 percentiles for tackles, blocks, interceptions, and dribblers tackled.

However, at City, his role has often been more focused on ball progression and positional play than on direct defensive duels, suggesting that under Moyes, who may deploy him with different responsibilities, he could adapt and improve in these areas.

Everton’s acquisition of Grealish on loan from Manchester City has added creativity to the squad, but the limitations of the forward are clear.

At 29, he has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, missing 17 games over the past two campaigns.

In 2023/24, Grealish played just 721 minutes, starting only seven matches and making 13 substitute appearances, per Transfermarkt.

His output last season was modest, with a single goal and one assist, though his quality on the ball and ability to create chances has never been in doubt.

Thomas Tuchel has emphasised that consistent first-team football is vital for Grealish if he has plans to play at the World Cup next year.

By contrast, Ake could provide a more immediate and reliable impact in a key area of need. The contrast between these two summer moves underlines Everton’s evolving priorities.

With the squad already strengthened in attack by the likes of Grealish and Thierno Barry, the remaining requirement is to ensure defensive stability.

Injuries to Branthwaite and Mykolenko have exposed the need for experienced and adaptable players who can seamlessly slot into multiple positions. The City defender’s Premier League experience, technical quality, and leadership make him a more impactful addition relative to the immediate threat posed by injuries.

His presence could allow Moyes to maintain balance across the pitch, protect the defensive line, and build a platform from which the team can attack more confidently.

While City value him at £30-35m, the investment is aligned with the type of secure, experienced reinforcement that Everton require.

In comparison, Grealish’s loan structure provides creative options but comes with limitations on continuity and availability, particularly if injuries recur.

For a manager focused on building a resilient and balanced squad capable of competing across a demanding Premier League season, the addition of a versatile centre-back offers more tangible returns than an attacking loan.

Everton’s interest in the Manchester City defender reflects a pragmatic approach to squad building.

By prioritising defensive reinforcement over additional offensive firepower, Moyes is targeting the most pressing weakness in his side.

The player’s Premier League experience, positional versatility, and technical skill offer a solution that addresses immediate needs while providing scope for adaptation and growth.

While Grealish brings flair and creativity, it is the defender’s ability to strengthen Everton’s spine that could have the most decisive impact on the club’s 2025/26 campaign.
