Liverpool must ruthlessly drop Mac Allister & unleash "extraordinary" star

Liverpool are back in action in the League Cup tonight as they prepare to play host to Tottenham Hotspur in the second leg of the League Cup semi-final.

The Reds have had their focus turned to the Premier League and the Champions League in recent weeks and secured a 2-0 win over in-form Bournemouth in the top-flight in their last match.

Mohamed Salah’s double sealed all three points for the league leaders against the Cherries, to help them bounce back from their 3-2 defeat to PSV in Europe last week.

The Reds are currently six points clear at the top of the Premier League, after that win over Bournemouth, but Arne Slot and his team will be eyeing multiple trophies in the second half of the season.

They still have the Premier League, the League Cup, the Champions League, and the FA Cup trophies to compete for in the next four months.

However, they will need to overcome a deficit against Tottenham Hotspur this evening at Anfield, after they lost the first leg of the semi-final

tie in North London.

What happened in the first leg between Liverpool and Spurs

The only goal of the game was scored by Swedish teenager Lucas Bergvall in the 86th minute of the match, to seal a 1-0 win for Ange Postecoglou’s side on the night.

Dominic Solanke made a great run in behind the Liverpool defence and displayed great strength to hold off Ibrahima Konate before laying a pass off to Bergvall, who swept the ball into the bottom corner under pressure from Virgil van Dijk.

1-0 to Tottenham was not an entirely fair reflection of how the game went, however, as both teams had plenty of chances to find the back of the net and failed to do so.

As you can see in the table above, both sides had ‘big chances’ to score and only Spurs managed to take one of them, as Liverpool failed to score from 14 shots and three ‘big chances’.

These statistics show that it was an open game that was full of opportunities to test both goalkeepers and Slot may hope for a similar match, albeit with more chances for his side, tonight to make sure that his forwards have the ammunition they need to shine.

With this in mind, the Dutch head coach could ruthlessly ditch Alexis Mac Allister from the starting line-up for this clash with Spurs this evening, in order to bolster his attack.

Why Alexis Mac Allister could be dropped

The Argentina international started in the 2-0 win over Bournemouth last time out and struggled in the middle of the park with Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch alongside him.

Mac Allister played the opening 61 minutes of the match and failed to register a shot on target or a ‘big chance’ created, which shows that he did not offer much at the top end of the pitch for the Reds.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion man also lost four of his five duels, being dribbled past once, and did not make a single tackle, interception, block, or clearance to help the team out of possession.

These statistics show that Mac Allister endured a frustrating afternoon against the Cherries, as he failed to offer much on or off the ball, and that may have been why Slot decided to remove him from the game with 30 minutes left to play.

As you can see in the table above, the tempo-controlling midfield star has not offered a big threat in the final third throughout the season in the Premier League or the EFL Cup.

The Argentine whiz, who has averaged 3.3 tackles and interceptions per game in the Premier League, is not in the team to provide a constant stream of goals and assists, hence why he has only managed four goal contributions in 22 top-flight games.

Chalkboard

However, Liverpool are halfway to being knocked out of the League Cup at the semi-final stage and need goals tonight, which is why he should be ruthlessly ditched in favour of Curtis Jones.

Why Curtis Jones should be unleashed

The 24-year-old star should be unleashed from the start alongside Szoboszlai and Gravenberch for this second-leg clash with Spurs because he has the quality on the ball to make things happen in the final third.

Liverpool need goals, given that they are 1-0 down on aggregate, and Jones could use his ability at the top end of the pitch to carry them to Wembley for the final.

Jones has registered an assist in both of his last two appearances for Liverpool, against Lille and Bournemouth, and that means that he heads into tonight’s game in fine form, whilst Mac Allister struggled last time out against the Cherries.

The Liverpool academy graduate replaced the Argentine maestro at the weekend and went on to assist Salah’s second goal of the game, which was just the latest in a growing pile of goal contributions for him this season.

As you can see in the table above, the England international has provided an impressive level of production in front of goal in limited starts across all competitions this season.

Jones, who has been described as “extraordinary” by Micah Richards, has been directly involved in nine goals in 17 appearances, including six in ten Premier League games.

These statistics suggest that the Englishman would be far more likely to make a difference in the final third than Mac Allister against Spurs tonight, which is why Slot should bring him into the starting XI to carry the Reds to Wembley.

Miles Hammond, James Bracey thrive for Gloucestershire before rain seals stalemate

Only 19 overs possible on final day as Lancashire consolidate top-three placing

Miles Hammond and James Bracey batted Gloucestershire towards safety before rain wiped out the last two sessions of the LV= County Championship match with Lancashire at the Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol.Only 19 overs were possible at the start of the final day, which began with the home side precariously placed on 99 for three in their second innings, just 34 runs ahead.Overnight pair Hammond and Bracey negotiated them with few alarms on the placid pitch, both reaching half-centuries in taking the score to 176 for three by the time rain started to fall at 12.20pm.Hammond was unbeaten on 58 and Bracey 55 when play ceased. An early lunch was taken, and play almost restarted at 2.05pm, with umpires and teams ready to take the field. But more rain started to fall and became heavier, to the frustration of the groundstaff, who had been on and off with the covers.Umpires Rob Bailey and Neil Pratt abandoned any prospect of further play at 3.10pm.Lancashire took 14 points from the drawn contest to consolidate their position in the top three of the First Division, while Gloucestershire’s 12 points (they had one deducted for a slow over-rate) left them still occupying bottom place. The hosts have still not won a Championship game this season in eight attempts, but will take some comfort from having competed well in a closely-fought contest.Bracey, eager to overcome a poor run of form stretching back to the second match of the Championship campaign, was positive from the outset, cover-driving the opening delivery of the day from Will Williams for four.Unbeaten on 14 overnight, the England player was the first to his fifty, having faced 90 balls and hit seven boundaries.Fellow left-hander Hammond followed suit in the same over, bowled by Jack Morley, having just dispatched the spinner over long-on for six.His half-century occupied 124 deliveries and also featured five fours. But the time the rain came, Gloucestershire were 111 ahead and, with precious little assistance in the pitch for the bowlers, a draw looked the only likely outcome.

Rodgers could cash in on Palma with Celtic swoop for £5m "artist"

Celtic are set to head into Christmas Day in first place in the Scottish Premiership table despite dropping points at the weekend against Dundee United.

The Hoops were unable to find the back of the net at Tannadice Park and were held to a 0-0 draw on Sunday, which was just the second time that Brendan Rodgers’ side have dropped points in the top-flight this season.

Their 2-2 draw with Aberdeen earlier in the campaign was the only other time, in 16 matches so far, that the Scottish giants failed to secure all three points.

The Bhoys have impressed across all competitions, as well as the Premiership, though, as they have already lifted the League Cup, beating Rangers 5-4 on penalties after a 3-3 draw in regulation time at Hampden Park earlier this month.

Celtic are also on course to qualify for the play-off stage of the Champions League, with one defeat in six matches in Europe’s premier cup competition.

Despite all of their success across all competitions, the Premiership champions could look to make some changes to their squad in the upcoming January transfer window, and Luis Palma is one player who could be on the chopping block.

Why Luis Palma should be sold

The Honduras international made a rare appearance in the league on Sunday, as he came off the bench to make his fifth appearance of the season in the division.

He has failed to convince Rodgers to give him regular minutes in the Premiership and has been linked with a move away from Parkhead ahead of the second half of the season.

The Scottish Sun reported at the start of this month that MLS clubs are eyeing up a move for the former Aris winger, who is said to be considering his future at Parkhead due to a lack of game time in the 2024/25 campaign.

Palma has zero goals and zero assists in five appearances in the Premiership, and no goal contributions in his 16-minute outing in the Champions League.

As you can see in the table above, the 24-year-old flanker had a strong first season with the Scottish giants, with 21 goals and ‘big chances’ created in just 18 starts.

Unfortunately, though, the Honduran star has not been able to kick on after his initial signs of promise in Glasgow, and Rodgers has not felt that he has been in a position to start regularly over the likes of Daizen Maeda, Nicolas Kuhn, James Forrest, and Hyun-jun Yang.

The Northern Irish head coach could, now, ruthlessly cash in on Palma amid interest from the MLS by swooping to sign one of the club’s reported targets in that position.

Celtic's interest in Norwegian star

Earlier this month, Norwegian sports outlet Nettavisen, as relayed by The Celtic Star, Celtic are eyeing up a possible swoop for Sarpsborg forward Sondre Orjasaeter ahead of the January transfer window.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The report claimed that the Premiership champions have been keeping tabs on his performances in Norway during the 2024 campaign, which recently came to an end.

Orjasaeter is currently teammates with former Celtic Player of the Year winner Stefan Johansen and the ex-Hoops star could have plenty of good words to say about the Glasgow giants to convince the 21-year-old gem to make the move in January.

It did not reveal, however, how much Sarpsborg would want for the impressive left-sided attacker, or whether or not the Bhoys are prepared to make an official offer to secure his services.

The Daily Mail reports that Rodgers wants to add a left winger to his squad next month but it remains to be seen whether or not that player is Orjasaeter, who is valued at around £5m by Transfermarkt at this moment in time.

Celtic must, now, swoop to sign the Norway U21 international when the January transfer window officially opens for business next month, because bringing him to Parkhead would free up the space for the club to ruthlessly cash in on Palma.

Why Celtic should sign Sondre Orjasaeter

Firstly, his arrival would provide the Hoops manager with two quality options in the left wing position, with him and Maeda competing for that starting spot, and that would allow Rodgers to move the Honduras international on without worrying about a lack of depth in that area of the pitch.

Secondly, Orjasaeter only turned 21 last month and would arrive at Parkhead as a talented young player with the potential to develop, which means that the Hoops could help him to improve his performances on the pitch and, as a result, increase his value for a possible future sale.

Finally, the 21-year-old wizard’s form in the Eliteserien during the 2024 campaign suggests that the potential is there for him to come in and provide Maeda with real competition for his place in the starting XI in the second half of the season.

Orjasaeter, who was nicknamed “the artist” by former Wolves star Håvard Flo, is a right-footed left winger who has the quality to come inside onto his favoured foot to provide quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals for his side.

When compared to Maeda’s form in the 2023/24 campaign, as the Sarpsborg star has just completed a full league season, the Celtic target stacks up very well.

As you can see in the table above, the Norwegian dynamo has the potential to offer significantly more creativity, whilst not being as wasteful with the chances that come his way in the final third.

These statistics suggest that Rodgers could bring in a player to improve his team offensively by signing the Sarpsborg star, albeit it remains to be seen whether or not that form can translate over to Scottish football, due to his ability to consistently create high-quality chances for his teammates.

On paper, Orjasaeter appears to be a quality option for the Hoops to swoop for in January, and his arrival would allow them to finally cash in on Palma.

Ben Stokes will undergo scans this week to assess the severity of a knee injury he suffered during England’s 1-0 series defeat to West Indies in the Caribbean.Stokes was expected to have a low bowling workload on the tour after suffering a side strain during England’s Ashes defeat, but ended up bowling 99 overs – the most of any seamer – across the series, and felt pain in his knee.Having opted out of the IPL auction, Stokes had hoped to play several early-season County Championship games for Durham ahead of the first Test of the summer against New Zealand on June 2, but his county comeback is on hold until the results of his scan.”I think it was pretty obvious that I was struggling with my knee a bit out in the Caribbean,” Stokes said on the podcast.”At the moment there is no training,” he said. “So I will go and get the scans and then we can find out what’s going on, and then hopefully can make a plan from there.”Related

European club may make new dream move for £12,000-p/w Celtic player in 2025

Whilst Celtic are once again on course to win the Scottish Premiership, one European side have now reportedly identified one of their defenders as their dream signing.

Celtic transfer news

Going head-to-head with Aberdeen rather than Rangers in the Scottish Premiership title race so far this season, Celtic haven’t skipped a beat and sit above their new rivals on goal difference having both avoided defeat in the opening nine games of the campaign. The Bhoys most recently enjoyed a comfortable afternoon against Motherwell, easing to a 3-0 victory to maintain their place at the top.

As success continues to arrive, meanwhile, those away from the action have reportedly turned their attention towards further reinforcements when 2025 arrives with Dario Osario recently linked to Celtic Park.

Rodgers must drop Forrest to unleash Celtic's "breathtaking" magician

The Celtic head coach should bring the attacker back into the starting line-up.

ByDan Emery Oct 30, 2024

The Chile star is a man in-demand following his recent rise at Midtjylland and could yet complete a move to the Scottish champions to hand Brendan Rodgers an attacking boost. It’s not just incomings that could steal the headlines, however, with one of Rodgers’ defenders potentially heading for the exit door.

According to Sportbladet via Sport Witness, Malmo are now dreaming of signing Gustaf Lagerbielke, who is currently on loan away from Celtic at FC Twente. The defender has reportedly rejected the Swedish club in the past but could now get a second opportunity to change his mind in 2025.

Celtic defender Carl Starfelt.

Whether or not Lagerbielke has a future at Celtic remains to be seen after he struggled for game time last season and was allowed to leave on loan. Earning a reported £12,000-a-week, the Bhoys could decide to cash in on the 24-year-old and help Malmo to realise a dream move in the process when the 2025 summer window arrives.

"Impressive" Lagerbielke is at a crossroads

Having made just three appearances whilst on loan at FC Twente so far this season, Lagerbielke’s struggles have only worsened since leaving Celtic for the season, giving him plenty to think about. At somewhat of a crossroads, a move back to Sweden and Malmo wouldn’t exactly be a bad route to take back to the top, with game time the most important factor in his next switch.

It certainly seems a long way back from here to break into Rodgers’ Celtic side in what has been an unexpected fall. It was, of course, only last year that the defender’s passing range was dubbed “impressive” by Celtic writer Ryan McGinlay as he began to find his feet in Scotland. Now, however, an exit seems the best solution for all parties.

As Celtic march towards yet another title in Scotland, on loan Lagerbielke must come to a decision on his future. After rejecting Malmo once, he may well decide to realise their dream should they come calling a second time in next summer’s transfer window.
