Manchester United: Fans happy with Anthony Martial exit rumour

A number of Manchester United supporters have been reacting positively to another rumour claiming Anthony Martial could leave the club.

The Frenchman has had a curious United career in many ways, enjoying some success but never quite matching the expectations many had when he arrived in 2015.

Martial has scored 79 goals in 268 appearances for the Red Devils but he has found himself increasingly out of favour at Old Trafford.

[freshpress-poll id=“378953″]

Only two Premier League starts have come his way this season, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Edinson Cavani all seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport [via Sport Witness and utdreport on Twitter], Martial will now do all he can to leave United in the January transfer window, assuming he is not in Ralf Rangnick’s plans.

Saints eye Adam Armstrong

According to Football Insider, Southampton lead the race to sign Adam Armstrong from Blackburn Rovers this summer.

The Lowdown: Saints eye a striker

After a mixed campaign which saw the Saints finish 15th in the Premier League but also reach an F.A Cup semi-final, Ralph Hasenhuttl and co will likely be looking to add to his squad ahead of next term.

With Danny Ings continually linked with the exit door (The Telegraph via The Daily Express), a new striker could be towards the top of Hasenhuttl’s wishlist.

The Latest: Armstrong on the radar

Now, according to Football Insider sources, the Saints are leading the race for Armstrong along with newly-promoted Norwich City.

As per the report, Blackburn are looking for £15m for the 24-year-old.

The Verdict: On form

Last-term, Armstrong enjoyed a prolific campaign despite his side only finishing 15th in the Championship table. He scored 29 goals in 43 games in all competitions, including 28 in the league (Transfermarkt) – only Brentford’s Ivan Toney managed more in the second tier last term (topscorersfootball.com).

Tony Mowbray hailed him as a “dynamic” player towards the end of 2020 (FourFourTwo), and his goal record suggests that assessment is spot on.

All in all, he has 64 strikes in 160 games for Blackburn – it seems he is ready to make the next step after his best campaign yet.

Valued at £14.4m (Transfermarkt), the fee Rovers are actually looking for appears to be respectable, too. Should the Saints be able to capture his services, he could be an inspired signing.

In other news, Southampton fans were livid at this man’s exit.

Reguilon endures nightmare for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon endured a nightmare evening as the north Londoners were defeated in the Carabao Cup final by Manchester City.

The Spanish left-back continued his poor run of form with a shocking display in which he struggled to contain Man of the Match Riyad Mahrez and wasn’t able to impose much of an influence on Kyle Walker.

SofaScore graded Reguilon their worst performer with a 6.0 rating and similarly, football.london’s Alasdair Gold was far from impressed with his performance.

‘Off the pace in the first half and picked up a yellow card for a late lunge on De Bruyne. Lacked quality in his end product when he did get forward,’ he wrote.

In midweek, the 24-year-old was a frequent influence against Southampton, managing more touches (97) of the ball than all but one other Spurs player but here, he managed only 43 touches and was largely wasteful and ineffective with it.

Even Hugo Lloris (54) had more touches at Wembley than Reguilon.

Across the 90 minutes, the former Real Madrid ace won just one of seven duels (14%), further showing just how badly he struggled against the likes of Mahrez and Walker.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-manager-transfer-news-and-rumours” title=”Read this week’s latest Spurs manager news, transfer rumours and more!”]

And just like Gold claims, when going forward, he offered interim boss Ryan Mason absolutely nothing – as per SofaScore, Reguilon failed to register a shot, dribble or key pass and couldn’t even provide an accurate cross, leaving Harry Kane very little to work with.

His game was summed up by a very lazy and late tackle on Kevin De Bruyne, when the Belgian superstar looked to be away down the right flank. The Reguilon from earlier of the season would’ve been so much smarter there.

He’s just not been the same since returning from injury.

In his last eight appearances, Reguilon has only managed a rating above 6.8 once, with this latest game being the worst in that run, according to SofaScore figures.

Unfortunately for Spurs, though, his main rival for the left-back spot – Ben Davies – is still out injured, so it’s not as if Mason can make a change there.

The £45m-rated dynamo, who is thought to be earning around £80k-per-week in N17, badly let Spurs down on Sunday evening.

Sunderland issued Alex Pritchard boost

Sunderland have been issued a huge injury lift over attacking midfielder Alex Pritchard after he was absent on Monday…

What’s the latest?

Black Cats boss Alex Neil has explained why he was not in the squad for the clash with Plymouth and provided hope for the final three matches of the campaign.

He told the Sunderland Echo: “What we couldn’t do is risk him, the last thing I want to do is put him on for 20 minutes, he breaks back down and we then miss him for the next week.”We’re at a stage now where if you are out for any period of time, you miss all the remaining games.”I’m very, very hopeful that if we get a good week, well three days under his belt [before Saturday], then let’s see how he goes for the next week.” Supporters will be delighted

Supporters will be delighted with this news as Pritchard’s return will be a major boost for the club ahead of a crucial set of games.

The Black Cats are one point above Sheffield Wednesday, having played one match more, in the race for a play-off position and are two points off fourth with a game in hand on fifth and fourth. This means that they have a big chance to land in the top six by the end of the campaign and their clashes with Cambridge, Rotherham and Morecambe.

Therefore, Pritchard coming back is vital for Neil as he has the quality to unlock defences. Sunderland struggled badly in the final third without him against Plymouth on Monday as they failed to create any clear-cut chances to score, managing two shots on target in the 0-0 draw.

In League One this season, the Englishman has created 2.1 chances per game and provided eight ‘big chances’ in 33 outings. This shows that he has regularly been delivering in the final third in terms of being able to create openings for his teammates, which would have helped the likes of Nathan Broadhead and Ross Stewart earlier this week.

The 28-year-old has the magic touch on the ball, with four goals and seven assists this term, and can be the difference-maker as Sunderland fight for a play-off position. This is why the fans will be buzzing to read Neil’s ‘hopeful’ comments regarding his current injury situation as he can play a huge role in the team in the coming weeks.

WHU: Fans react to Lingard’s comments

Many fans of West Ham United have been reacting to a post on Twitter in which Jesse Lingard reflected on the Hammers’ weekend Premier League draw with Arsenal.

Following the 3-3 stalemate with the Gunners, a game in which Lingard scored one goal and registered one assist, the 28-year-old took to Twitter, claiming that he and his team were “disappointed not to take the 3 points” from the fixture, but that he felt West Ham “have come a long way” and that he is “proud to be a part of it.”

Since joining David Moyes’ side on a five-month loan deal back in the January transfer window, the £13.5m-rated attacking midfielder has been in remarkable form over his seven league appearances for the Hammers, scoring five goals and providing two assists, as well as averaging a WhoScored match rating of 7.48 – ranking him as the seventh-best player in the entirety of the top flight.

In reaction to his post on Twitter, numerous fans of West Ham flocked to have their say on the matter, with many heaping a considerable amount of praise on the England international, while others begged the Manchester United loanee to stay at their club beyond his current temporary deal.

So, what exactly did these West Ham United fans have to say in reaction to Jesse Lingard’s post on Twitter?

“Incredible performance yet again, now we need to focus on getting top six.”

“You do us proud, don’t leave us.”

@SamanthaWalsh1

Liverpool will sell Neco Williams

Liverpool are prepared to let defender Neco Williams depart Anfield this summer after he struggled to get game time last season.

What’s the story?

The 20-year-old academy graduate only signed a new five-year deal with the Reds back in August 2020, but after finding opportunities in the first-team limited, he could be set to depart over the coming months.

That’s according to BBC Sport, who claim a minimum asking price of £10 million has been placed on Williams’ head, although he’s reluctant to leave his boyhood club.

He’s been shocking

With a world-class operator ahead of him in Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Wales international was limited to just 14 appearances in all competitions last season.

Only three of those outings came as starts in the Premier League, though, and after spending extended periods of time on the Liverpool bench, he appears to be destined for the exit door.

And in truth, when he has been given the opportunity to showcase his talents, the 20-year-old has often been unable to produce a telling contribution.

Williams managed a passing accuracy of just 79.6% in 2020/21, while also tackling just 66.7% of opponents who attempted to dribble past him, two statistics that only scratch the surface of showing how shockingly bad he performed.

After failing to see the player excel both with and without the ball at his feet, it’s easy to understand why Jurgen Klopp is ready to part ways with the youngster.

In order for Liverpool to bring in their top transfer targets over the current window, the Merseyside outfit may need to sell some fringe players to bolster their budget.

The likes of Xherdan Shaqiri, Marko Grujic and Harry Wilson have been linked with moves away as a result, and Williams is the latest fringe player to be put up for sale.

His £10m price tag and £25,000-per-week wage packet would provide a sizeable boost to the funds available to Klopp, allowing the German tactician more room to maneuver in the transfer market.

With the versatile James Milner and Joe Gomez as part of his squad, Klopp can afford to let Williams go, safe in the knowledge that he does have cover for Alexander-Arnold.

It may be ruthless to push a player out of the door at his boyhood club, but that’s exactly what Klopp should do as Williams’ time in the first team at Liverpool have proven that he simply isn’t up to the standard required.

Leeds intensify transfer talks with Cunha

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is intensifying transfer talks with Hertha BSC star Matheus Cunha.

What’s the story?

According to recent reports from German publication Bild (via Sport Witness), Bielsa’s side have already expressed their interest in signing the £27m-rated forward, and a move could be on the cards after the 22-year-old received approval from Hertha to leave the capital club.

Brazilian outlet UOL now claim that the Whites have intensified talks with Hertha over bringing him to Elland Road this summer, and that despite the German club’s high demands, Leeds are promising to make a big effort and won’t give up on his signing.

Imagine him and Rodrigo

Speaking on a Facebook Live video, Leeds Live’s Beren Cross said: “Cunha, yeah I mean I think anybody that’s done a basic level of analysis or read some of the stuff around Cunha will know that he’s a bit like (Rodrigo) De Paul, really, he’s a very exciting footballer – he’s got a lot going for him.”

Dubbed as “something special” by former Hertha BSC manager Bruno Labbadia, the £55,000-a-week Cunha enjoyed a superb campaign in the Bundesliga last season, scoring eight goals and providing another eight assists in all competitions.

With Cunha’s ability to play as a number ten, through the middle and out wide on the left, the Brazilian could strike up a partnership with last summer’s signing Rodrigo.

The duo are hugely versatile, with the Leeds man also able to play as the number nine or just behind the central striker – in fact, he was at his most prolific last season when playing in the second striker role, scoring three goals in five games.

Both have the pace, the movement, the creativity and the knack of breaking into the box at the right time to be a real attacking threat – Cunha averaged 2.6 shots and 1.8 key passes per game in the Bundesliga last season, while Rodrigo managed 1.8 and 1.2 respectively in the Premier League.

The two could either play just behind Patrick Bamford and operate as number tens, or Bielsa could instead use one of them as the centre-forward and let the other one drop deeper.

In either case, Cunha could strike up an exciting partnership with Rodrigo were he to join Leeds.

Meanwhile, Leeds United facing major transfer blow…

Sheffield Wednesday could lose Windass

Sheffield Wednesday could lose their star forward Josh Windass this summer should they face relegation from the Championship…

What’s the word?

That’s according to reliable YorkshireLive reporter Dom Howson, who dropped a fresh claim over the future of the 27-year-old Owls ace earlier this week.

In response to one supporter in a recent Q&A, he said:

“I think they would struggle to keep Windass if they were relegated. I could see him having a lot of Championship interest. I know he was linked with WBA a couple of months ago.”

Bad news for Moore

The Owls have a tough task in staying up as it is, even despite their rampant 5-0 victory against Cardiff City last time out, they still remain seven points adrift of safety with only one game in hand on that 21st spot.

Windass has played a key role this season and is probably a player that Moore would love to keep around next season irrespective of what division they find themselves in.

In terms of goal contributions, the former Rangers man sits joint-top, having provided six goals and four assists. This accounts for a whopping 30% share of all the goals the Owls have scored in the second-flight this term.

He has also proven to be a versatile threat under Moore, playing in four different positions since the 46-year-old was appointed. Windass is the sort of player that fits the expansive, attacking style of football the ex-West Brom coach deploys.

Dean Windass highlighted a key part of his son’s game being his explosiveness in an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, only bolstering his credential in south Yorkshire under Moore.

“He’s a quick, explosive runner,” explained Windass.

Indeed, the £1.44m-rated dynamo would be a big miss for Wednesday. He is under contract until 2022, but as Howson claims, the Owls are unlikely to be able to keep hold of him if they go down.

Sunderland set to release Chris Maguire

Sunderland have confirmed that Chris Maguire will not be offered a new contract by the club this summer.

What’s the latest?

According to a statement posted on the club website, the centre-forward will be released upon the expiry of his current deal at the Stadium of Light next month, as the Black Cats do not wish to retain the 32-year-old’s services ahead of next season.

Potential mistake

After joining Sunderland from Bury FC back in 2018, Maguire went on to make 124 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring 28 goals and providing 26 assists along the way.

This season, the Scotland international predominantly found himself starting fixtures on the bench, with only 12 of his total of 34 League One appearances coming from the first whistle.

However, despite this, Maguire nonetheless impressed when given the chance by Johnson, with the striker scoring five goals, registering five assists and creating seven big chances in the league.

The £315k-rated man also popped up with goal contributions at crucial times for the Black Cats this term, such as restoring the lead in a 3-1 win over Plymouth Argyle, providing the assist for Charlie Wyke’s strike in a 1-0 victory against Swindon Town and scoring a 97th-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Crewe Alexandra.

As such, Lee Johnson’s decision to allow the £4.4k-per-week forward move on to pastures new this summer could easily be argued as being one of his biggest mistakes at the club thus far – with this opinion being something that a number of Sunderland fans appear to agree with.

After the club posted their released list on Twitter, one Sunderland fan claimed that the departure of Maguire is “criminal,” while another simply stated their bafflement at Johnson letting the 32-year-old go.

Indeed, despite getting towards the twilight of his career, the versatile attacker has proven this season that he is still an extremely useful player to have around the place, and it would appear a highly likely scenario that the Scot will not be without a club for all that long – something that could well come back to haunt Johnson if Maguire were to sign for one of their League One promotion rivals.

QPR handed Luke Amos injury boost

Queens Park Rangers have been handed a potential injury boost ahead of the Rs’ upcoming Championship fixture.

What’s the latest?

According to a report by West London Sport, QPR midfielder Luke Amos is nearing a return to first-team football after spending nearly a year on the sidelines as a result of an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which the defensive midfielder picked up against AFC Bournemouth last October.

The 24-year-old, who had also spent a year on the treatment table with an ACL injury prior to his move from Tottenham Hotspur to QPR in 2020, started two fixtures in the space of a week for the club’s U23 side towards the end of August, and could be in contention for the visit of Reading this Saturday.

Warburton will be buzzing

While Mark Warburton bolstered his options in central midfield with a number of summer signings, including the likes of Stefan Johansen, Sam Field and Andre Dozzell, the return of Amos will undoubtedly have left the 59-year-old manager buzzing.

Indeed, the £900k-rated man played a key role in QPR’s 2019/20 Championship campaign, featuring in 34 league fixtures for the club, over which the former England U19 international scored two goals, as well as making an average of one interception, 1.5 tackles, 0.8 clearances and winning 3.8 duels per game.

The £5k-per-week midfielder also started the 2020/21 season brightly, averaging a SofaScore match rating of 6.76 over his five Championship appearances prior to his injury.

As such, while it is true that Amos may have a bit of work to do to re-establish himself in Warburton’s starting XI, his return from injury is undeniably good news for the Rs boss, who will be delighted that a player as talented as the 24-year-old looks set to be available for selection once again – adding further depth to a position in which QPR now boast a number of impressive options.
