Celtic: BBC man makes Postecoglou contract claim

Celtic’s hierarchy have been told to tie manager Ange Postecoglou down ‘for a long time’ amid interest from the Premier League.

The lowdown

Postecoglou’s contract at Parkhead is currently due to expire at the end of the 2022/23 season.

The Australian, who took over in the summer of 2021, is thought to be on a rolling deal with the Hoops.

According to The Telegraph, Brighton have expressed an interest in Postecoglou following the departure of Graham Potter, but learned that the 57-year-old wants to stay put for now.

The latest

Reacting to the exit links in a chat with Football Insider, Alan Hutton told Celtic to push for a long-term agreement with Postecoglou in light of his ‘remarkable’ achievements at the club.

He has been highly impressed by the manner in which the boss has implemented his philosophy, and feels it’s inevitable more Premier League teams will be too.

If I was the hierarchy at Celtic I’d want to tie him down for a long time,” Hutton, now a pundit for BBC Radio 5 Live, said.

What he’s done since he’s come through the door at the club is quite remarkable to be quite honest.

Not just the turnaround in playing staff but the playing style and everybody has bought into that. Some of the football they have played is incredible.

Not just the Old Firm game but against Real Madrid, the European champions, they played the exact same way and they were unlucky they just ran out of a bit of steam.

If it was me, I would definitely want to tie him down. I can understand why teams like Brighton are looking at him because he’s done a remarkable job since he’s come in to Celtic.”

The verdict

Celtic need to be wary. Postecoglou’s name will surely pop up in connection with other managerial vacancies south of the border.

Leicester City, for instance, are struggling badly, with just one point on the board after six games. If they decide to sack Brendan Rodgers, then might they turn to Postecoglou?

With one Scottish Premiership title under already his belt, and another potentially in the offing after Celtic opened up an early five-point advantage, he deserves better than a one-year rolling deal.

As the premier league table begins to take shape, here’s how we think it will finish

The season is shaping up well, despite the strain on the schedule due to stymied by Her Majesty’s passing. Unlike in cricket, footie fans can’t quite be trusted to show their respects through songs and so matches have been pushed back to honour the county’s loss. Perhaps it is not out of disrespect for the Queen but disregard for Charles’s accession to the throne. Whatever, either way there are going to be some delays for September’s action!

Arsenal sit at the top of the table with 15 points, despite having taken a (more than light) beating from Man U. Well, the league table that is – the odds maker’s table is taking a different shape with Liverpool and Man City looking like two honchos ready for a showdown in June. It has to be said though that the gunners certainly didn’t leave the transfer window out gunned. With the sensational Gabriel Jesus presiding over the rest of a hundred million spend, Arsenal are not out of the running to finish the league victorious.

Tottenham (and their under twenty one secret weapon) really are looking hot this year in spite of their undeservedly blank victory history. These guys are the most likely out of the unexpected wins, meaning, who would make the cup-taking the most memorable whilst realistically having a shot. Sorry Leicester, it’s not that bringing back the magic of 2015-2016 would not be memorable, it just isn’t realistic. Yes, Leicester shaped up poorly – losing almost every game so far and winning none. Chelsea beat them despite being only ten men deep for over an hour – not a good look for Leicester. It must be said though, seeing these guys at their best and when morale is running high is such a joy, it would be a genuine shame to see them relegated… even if Hotspur and Forest show them the curb in the coming weeks.

As for the end game, will this be an old tale of vengeance and standing ground between the current (and usual) suspects Liverpool and Man City? Or will there be more to it?

Well, Man United might be the underdog of the top tier… And it doesn’t seem that long ago that that phrase would have sounded insane. I’m of course talking about the Sir Alex Ferguson years. Truly golden years when you look at the stats – United won the premier league 12 times in the past thirty years and once in the last ten. This contrast shows what is at stake and the legacy that fans dream will one day be lived up to. And slashing their odds in half after the Arsenal match (and let’s not forget beating Liverpool) equally shows how promising they are this season.

Speaking of Underdogs, Brighton and Hove Albion have been the unexpected stars by pillaging a whopping thirteen points. They may not be around the top of the table in the latter stages of  the season but, in football, nothing is certain. Graham Potter is an outstanding manager who has given Brighton an explosive start to the season. Unfortunately for the seagulls however he is… a little too good perhaps and has been snapped up by Chelsea. Brighton are currently looking at replacements and hoping for some consistency with the rest of the season.

So… City. Yes the Norwegian demi-god Erling Haaland has manifested in this year’s squad to score an almighty 12 EPL goals, having smote the back of ten nets in this nascent premier league. Who knows what the future brings, maybe he even has his boot aimed at Shearer’s record. His collection of golden accolades is certainly a testament to this twenty two year old. It’s clear from his goalless performance at community shield that Haaland needs his gang, the support to sail above the rest, and this year’s city squad (perhaps even Julian Alvarez alone) is more than enough for this Viking to thrive.

Liverpool obviously want to avenge their past selves and remedy the cigar-less and oh so close last season. Although they all went to Naples to get hammered 4-1, we can focus on the Premier League and ignore any unexpected blips. They may currently be seventh but are considered to have an edge even on City when it comes to end game favourites. Indeed, Klopp could well be the new king.

Just as predicting the league’s winner can be lucrative so too can predicting its losers. All the top gambling sites will sport relegation odds. In regards to relegation, Nottingham forest and Bournemouth (who may never recover from Liverpool’s thorough gutting) may be the ones having their own showdown. That is of course if Leicester doesn’t continue to make their lives a whole lot easier. Just as predicting the league’s winner can be lucrative so too can predicting its losers.

Rangers had a shocker on Scotland gem Dykes

Rangers have been on the receiving end of criticism regarding their recruitment in recent times, with the Ibrox outfit struggling to adequately strengthen the starting XI, having largely utilised a similar lineup to the one deployed by former boss Steven Gerrard during his early tenure.

There have been notable missed opportunities with regards to bolstering their ranks, with current head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst likely rueing the Old Firm side’s inability to sign Scotland international, Lyndon Dykes.

The towering marksman had reportedly been a target for the Gers – as well as bitter rivals Celtic – back in the summer of 2020, having provided 12 goals and ten assists during the 2019/20 campaign while at fellow Scottish Premiership side, Livingston.

Reports at the time suggested that the striker was available for a relative bargain fee of just £2m, although the Ibrox side ultimately backed away from pursuing a deal, with the Australian-born menace joining Football League outfit Queens Park Rangers instead.

It also proved a baffling decision as the club subsequently went on to sign Cedric Itten on a £3m deal in that same window, with the Swiss striker ultimately scoring just eight goals in 49 games over the next two years before sealing a departure in the recent window.

As pundit Alan Hutton alluded to at the time, Gerrard and co seemingly “missed a trick” by not signing Dykes, with the player having since gone on to score 22 goals and provide eight assists in 90 games during his time at Loftus Road.

Such impressive form had seen the Scottish giants linked with another swoop back in January, although the £2.7m-rated titan ultimately stayed put in west London, with Van Bronckhorst having since brought in Antonio Colak over the summer.

While the new addition has thrived in his new surroundings – with nine goals in just 13 league games thus far – a further attacking recruit could well have been beneficial, with Colombian ace Alfredo Morelos having just a year left on his current deal amid concerns over both his fitness and attitude.

In Dykes, the Gers could well have had a player who has the quality to “hurt anyone in the world” – according to international colleague John McGinn – with the 26-year-old also having a knack for scoring “all kinds of goals”, as per former QPR assistant, John Eustace.

The “fantastic” talent – as also dubbed by Eustace – has particularly impressed for his country in recent years, notably scoring twice off the bench in the recent Nations League victory over Ukraine at Hampden Park on Wednesday evening.

That brace has taken the £6k-per-week gem’s total Scotland tally to eight goals in just 23 games thus far since his debut just over two years ago, having proven an “amazing find” for manager Steve Clarke, in the words of pundit Alex McCleish.

With the former Queen of the South man looking likely to play a key role on the international stage in the coming years, Rangers could well be left to rue their previous inaction even further.

Aston Villa linked with Calvin Bassey

Aston Villa are considering a move for Rangers defender Calvin Bassey, according to John Percy.

The Lowdown: Bassey profiled

Bassey was signed by Steven Gerrard for Rangers back in 2020 from Leicester City and has made 63 appearances for the Scottish giants, 48 of which have come during the 2021/22 season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-updates/” title=”Aston Villa latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Primarily a left-back, the 22-year-old can also turn out as a centre-back and is under contract at Ibrox until 2024. The Nigerian, described as ‘phenomenal’ when coming through with Leicester, shares the same agency as Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey.

The Latest: Villa links

Percy shared a story for The Telegraph on Thursday evening, looking at Villa’s permanent move for Philippe Coutinho.

Within his report, the reliable reporter stated that Villa are now looking to bring in a left-back to challenge Lucas Digne, with Bassey and Aaron Hickey ‘under consideration’.

The Verdict: Shrewd move?

Bassey has now established himself as a regular in Scotland has played a key role in Rangers’ run to the Europa League final, so a possible transfer appears to be a shrewd one.

He’ll be entering the final two years of his contract in the summer and seems to be a player Gerrard rates after he brought him to Scotland.

The versatile defender would bolster the club’s left-back and centre-back ranks, should he sign, something which could be handy with the futures of Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa up in the air.

Bassey’s agency have recently spoken to Villa following Ramsey’s new long-term deal in the Midlands, so, providing Villa can agree on a fee, a summer move could be fairly straightforward.

Tottenham: ESPN break Perisic transfer development

According to broadcast giant ESPN, a very interesting transfer development has now come out Tottenham Hotspur involving Inter Milan forward Ivan Perisic.

The Lowdown: Conte eyes attacking upgrade…

Spurs manager Antonio Conte, having guided his side to within touching distance of a previously unthought of top-four finish in the Premier League, also sets one eye on the looming transfer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Times claim he wants as many as six major signings in the summer ‘at least’ with eight Lilywhites players potentially heading out the exit door.

Sergio Reguilón, Emerson Royal, Steven Bergwijn, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele could be given Conte’s axe among others and it is believed that the 52-year-old wants to bring in a new forward.

The Latest: Perisic development emerges…

Now, as per big name broadcaster ESPN and their reporter James Olley on Twitter, the north Londoners are ‘exploring a deal to sign’ Perisic from Inter as they eye a Bosman move.

Spurs have apparently made contact over the 33-year-old with the US news outlet also reporting that he is open to reuniting with former boss Conte at N17.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Even at 33, Perisic has been integral at the San Siro this season, with former midfielder Fausto Pizzi calling the Croatian ‘incredible’ with ‘no others’ like him in the Italian top flight (via TUTTOmercatoWEB).

A mainstay under Simone Inzaghi, only teammate Hakan Calhanoglu has averaged a higher match-rating per 90 than Perisic as Inter’s ace stands out as one of their top performers (WhoScored).

Landing the attacker on a free deal could come as quite a brilliant quick-fix for Spurs in the forward positions for around one-two seasons before a more permanent solution can be found.

In other news: Offer imminent: Tottenham ready ‘sensational’ player move as club plan 50% discount, find out more here.

Aston Villa: Newcastle linked with Tyrone Mings

Newcastle United have been linked with a big-money move for Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings.

The Lowdown: Mings’ future in doubt

Mings, described as ‘outstanding’ by Gabby Agbonlahor, has made 127 appearances for Villa and has once again been a regular this season under both Dean Smith and Steven Gerrard.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-news/” title=”Aston Villa latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The club captain has missed just two Premier League fixtures during the current campaign and is now valued at a career-high £28.8m by Transfermarkt.

However, despite being a regular and seemingly at the top of his game, his Villa Park future is apparently up in the air.

Mings was name-checked as one of eight players who could leave ahead of Gerrard’s first full season in charge, and it looks as if a Premier League rival are now exploring a move.

The Latest: Newcastle interest

According to The Mirror, Mings is a £35m summer target for Newcastle, with Eddie Howe the man to sign the defender for Bournemouth back in 2015.

The report adds that Gerrard could be persuaded to green-light a big-money sale, providing he can bring in Joe Gomez from Liverpool, in what would be the Villans’ third-biggest sale ever after Jack Grealish and Christian Benteke.

The Verdict: Another needed?

Should Mings depart and Gomez arrive, Villa would still have four senior centre-backs on the books. Gomez could join Calum Chambers, Kortney Hause and Ezri Konsa at Villa Park, however, the latter of the trio is out injured for four months with a knee problem.

Therefore, it could make sense to bring in another centre-back over the coming months ahead of Gerrard’s first full season in what could be a busy summer with NSWE willing to spend over £150m.
