Kieswetter puts career fears behind him

Craig Kieswetter marked his return to the Somerset side after a potentially career-threatening eye injury with a fluent half-century as Middlesex’s survival hopes took a hit

It might be pushing the truth a little to claim that Craig Kieswetter was blind but now can see, but the Somerset keeper has admitted he feared his career might be over after sustaining a serious eye injury a little over two months ago.Kieswetter sustained a broken nose and fractured orbital socket after he was struck by a short ball from David Willey on July 12. For three weeks it was unclear whether he would regain the level of sight required to pursue a career in cricket. But now, with the double-vision having cleared, Kieswetter regards the whole experience as positive and claims it gave him not only a fuller appreciation of his position as a professional sportsman, but also of the affection in which players are held at a friendly, well-supported club like Somerset.”Once the extent of the injury became clear, I was panicking,” Kieswetter said. “There was a week before the surgery and two weeks after that I was worried that I might not play again.”For the first 90 minutes I was full of adrenalin. But then, as I was passed from surgeon to surgeon and it became clear there was an issue with my optical floor, I was panicking. But my surgeon did a fantastic job and I have been overwhelmed and humbled by the support I have received.”I had double vision in one eye for a couple of weeks after surgery and, even now, it is not 100% when I look directly up. It takes time to get over the injury and the trauma.”Sometimes as players, we can be a bit aloof towards supporters. But the care I had showed what a special club this is to be around. It is a special thing for a player to feel that sense of belonging.”I might be walking down the street or out for dinner and people I didn’t know would come up and ask how I was. Even the reception when I walked out to bat today gave me goose-bumps. It’s important I return the favour. I was delighted to give something back today.”Kieswetter “gave something back” by providing the most fluent batting of a day which ended with Somerset having edged Middlesex a little closer to relegation. Contributing 70 at little less than a run-a-ball, he made light of an unusually green wicket and, when greeted with the inevitable short ball near the start of his innings by Toby Roland-Jones, responded by pulling it for six. No matter that there was something of the top-edge in the stroke, he played it with conviction and was soon timing the ball sweetly through the covers. With Tom Abell and James Hildreth also contributing patient half-centuries, Middlesex, were restricted to one bowling bonus point despite inserting Somerset in overcast conditions.Middlesex have another 14 overs on the second day in order to claim more bonus points – they require a maximum of 13 more points from their final two games to ensure Division One survival – but are now in an uncomfortable position ahead of their final game against the other relegation candidates, Lancashire, next week. After winning four of their first six matches, Middlesex have failed to win any of their last eight, with the last victory coming on May 21.They were a little unfortunate here, though. Ball beat bat regularly in the first session and, with 17 of the first 34 overs maidens, batting became a pretty desperate fight for survival.”We didn’t get out rewards today,” Richard Johnson, the Middlesex bowling coach, said. “We reckon they must have played and missed 50 or 60 times, but it was just one of those days.”But Middlesex also squandered at least two chances. Abell was reprieved on 4, when Eoin Morgan put down a sharp chance at third slip, and 28 – Dawid Malan, at second slip, the guilty man on this occasion. A couple of other chances dropped just short of the cordon on a surface which, despite the grass covering, remains slow and dry. There were moments when it appeared Middlesex might capitalise. Certainly after Marcus Trescothick guided one to gully and Nick Compton was bowled by one that nipped back, and then when Abell was run-out backing-up off Neil Dexter’s boot, it seemed Somerset might subside. But each time they found a player to dig them out of trouble, first Abell, with a 123-ball half-century, and then Hildreth, with a 130-ball half-century.Only Kieswetter looked comfortable, though. After returning to the nets a couple of weeks ago with batting coach, David Houghton, Kiesweeter regained his confidence against tennis balls and has gradually built up the pace and intensity of net sessions. He still retains hopes of winning a late call to the England World Cup squad, but aims to play in the Big Bash if that proves beyond him.”I wouldn’t be playing if I didn’t think I could still play at that level,” he said. “And my personality is such that I always like I should be playing for England. But having had this time to reflect on everything – the injury, being dropped by England and everything else – I realise I am one of those lucky people who earns a living doing something they truly love. It’s the game I fell in love with as a kid.”A lot of players forget that perspective check. I’m not saying I’m perfect, but I have seen the bigger picture. Hopefully the whole experience has made me mature. I hope I’ve improved as a person and as a cricketer.”Another man coming to terms with trauma and disappointment – albeit of a very different characteristic – is Ashley Giles. Giles admits he lost his appetite for coaching for a while after missing out to Peter Moores in the race to be appointed England coach, but is now recovering his enthusiasm for the job.He is expected to visit Taunton at some stage this week with a view to talking to the club about the role of director of cricket. It is worth noting, though, that it took Giles five years to transform Warwickshire from rabble to Championship winners. Whether Somerset, a club impatient for success after years of near-misses, will provide such time remains to be seen.

No pressure being captain, says Finch

Aaron Finch has said that being the captain of the T20 side will not affect his game, ahead of Australia’s one-off T20 game against Pakistan in Dubai

Brydon Coverdale04-Oct-2014

Aaron Finch – “My job, when I open the batting, is to get us off to a good start”•AFP

It’s fair to say 2014 has been quite a year for Aaron Finch. It started with a pair of ODI centuries against England in January, including one on his home ground. Then in July, he starred with an unbeaten 181 in the Lord’s bicentenary celebration match, batting with legends like Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar. And now, in October, he is about to captain his country for the first time.Finch was installed as the new T20 leader after George Bailey’s surprise decision to step down last month, and he was the logical choice. At 27, he has a long international future ahead of him. As the No.2-ranked T20 international batsman in the world, he is in no danger of losing his place. And he has plenty of leadership experience through Melbourne Renegades and Pune Warriors. There also seems little reason to worry about his personal performances dropping off under the burden of captaincy; in 25 T20 matches as captain, he has averaged 43.00, compared to an average of 33.62 when not captain. But still, there will be a few nerves when Finch steps out onto the field in Dubai to juggle his bowlers and set his fields.”My job, when I open the batting, is to get us off to a good start,” Finch told reporters in Dubai ahead of Sunday’s T20 against Pakistan. “That’s not going to change just because I’m captain. I think when I’ve captained in the past for various teams – Melbourne Renegades, Pune Warriors, Australia A – I think I’ve performed reasonably well with the bat.”I don’t think it adds any pressure to my personal game. I think when we get out into the field and it’s time to make decisions about bowling and fielding positions, I think that’s when I’ll start to get a little bit more nervous.”What he will want then is wickets, and plenty of them. Australia will have at least two debutants in their bowling ranks after Finch confirmed that legspinner Cameron Boyce and seamer Sean Abbott would play, while Kane Richardson is also likely to play his first T20 for Australia. But Finch believes the presence of new faces will create and added sense of excitement.”Cameron Boyce is going to come in and make his debut tomorrow,” Finch said. “He’s bowled exceptionally well in the Big Bash and bowled well in the game he played in the Champions League. When you have young guys coming in it brings a lot of excitement, a lot of freshness to everyone, not just the guy making his debut, but to everyone in the team.”They’ve got such a dangerous batting line-up. They’ve got hitters all through their innings who can take the game away from you really quick. So I think it’s really important that we take wickets all the way through. In T20 cricket, if you take wickets consistently, that’s the best way to slow the run-rate. In conditions like this, Pakistan can be such a dangerous team.”One of their most dangerous men is Finch’s opposing captain, Shahid Afridi, who is also a newly-appointed leader having replaced Mohammad Hafeez. Last time Finch and Afridi were involved in the same match was in the Lord’s celebration game in July; Finch’s huge hundred somewhat overshadowed Afridi’s second-ball duck.On Sunday in Dubai, they will shake hands at the toss, both new captains, both with key players missing – the injured Shane Watson and Mitchell Marsh for Australia, the banned Saeed Ajmal and injured Hafeez for Pakistan. And over the following three hours, Finch will hope his memorable 2014 continues with a first-up victory.

Bowlers meeting expectations of nation – Misbah

Misbah-ul-Haq, the Pakistan captain, credited his side’s bowlers following their 248-run victory against New Zealand in the first Test in Abu Dhabi. The victory was Pakistan’s third successive one in the UAE and came soon after they had thumped Australia 2-0.The most experienced bowler in Pakistan’s line-up was Mohammad Hafeez, and the most experienced specialist bowler was Rahat Ali, who was playing his ninth Test. Misbah said it was commendable that a largely inexperienced attack had thrived on surfaces where more experienced bowlers had struggled.”The kind of conditions we are getting, the world-class bowlers are struggling but these youngsters are living up to the expectations of the team, me and the whole nation,” Misbah said. “They are getting 20 wickets every match. So that’s a really big achievement for them.”You can’t say these are spinning tracks and that’s why we are getting wickets. The fast bowlers are really chipping in and they are doing a wonderful job. These are the same pitches where the top-class bowlers are struggling.”Misbah praised left-arm fast bowler Rahat Ali, who finished with a six-wicket haul in the game. Rahat’s 4 for 22 in the first innings was vital to keeping New Zealand to 262 and came after he had taken only four wickets in the series against Australia. The win made Misbah Pakistan’s most successful Test captain and he said he was honoured to be in the company of legendary cricketers like Imran Khan and Javed Miandad.”It sounds great, because you could say the names – Imran Khan, Javed Miandad those are the greats of Pakistan. But if I am at the top, it’s something I could not really think of,” Misbah said. “It’s great to know that. I am happy about that.”Despite the huge margin of victory, Misbah refused to call it an easy win and said he was mostly happy because the team had not squandered momentum from the 2-0 series win against Australia.”I think overall nothing is easy but it looked easy at the end. But you could say the team really played well, every individual held on to his responsibility and we stuck to our basics. We performed really well, like we performed against Australia, so we just kept that momentum and those performances intact. That was the key for us – that at the end, it looked easy. But nothing is easy in life and especially in cricket.”

Ryan Harris went wicketless but Queensland finished the first day on top of their clash with Tasmania at Allan Border Field. James Hopes and Luke Feldman picked up four wickets each as the Tigers were dismissed for 217, before Queensland reached 1 for 73 in reply, with Joe Burns on 29 and Usman Khawaja on 31.The only wicket to fall for the Bulls was opener Marnus Labuschagne, who was caught off Sam Rainbird for 10. The Tasmania top order had struggled earlier in the day after George Bailey won the toss and chose to bat, with Ed Cowan, Jordan Silk and Alex Doolan all falling cheaply to leave the Tigers at 3 for 30.Bailey (31) and Jon Wells (47) rebuilt somewhat, and James Faulkner chipped in with 35, but Queensland kept breaking through regularly. Hopes finished with the remarkable figures of 4 for 14 from 20 overs, and Feldman picked up 4 for 69. Harris, who was named in Australia’s Test squad on Monday, had 0 for 51 from his 13 overs.
