Peter Moores has been accepted on to UK Sport’s Elite Programme for world-class coaching development. The Lancashire head coach is one of only 10 coaches to be accepted on to the programme and one of only two from non-Olympic sports. As part of the role, Moores will share knowledge and expertise with leading coaches currently working in British sport during a three-year programme which was announced by UK Sport last November. The programme is designed to help ensure Britain’s leading athletes can continue to benefit from top-quality coaching as part of UK Sport’s wider planning for the next Olympiad in Rio in 2016. It will not affect his role with Lancashire. There may be a few raised eye-brows at the appointment. Moores endured some disappointing results in his tenure as England coach in 2007 and 2008 and, along with the captain Kevin Pietersen, was sacked after it became clear that the pair’s working relationship had deteriorated to an unsustainable level. His record at domestic level is exceptional, however. He coached Sussex to the first Championship title in their history in 2003 and, having moved to Old Trafford, took a Lancashire side some thought the weakest in many years to a well-deserved Championship title in 2011.While relegation followed in 2012, Moores’ reputation among most players at both clubs and within the England set-up is excellent. He was largely responsible for recognising the international potential of Graeme Swann and Matt Prior and was the man who decided to install James Anderson and Stuart Broad as the leaders of England’s attack. Andy Flower, the current England coach, has always been quick to credit Moores for his foundation-laying role with the side and, when the PCB wanted an independent review of its domestic cricket structure conducted last November, they appointed Moores for the task.”Peter has always been at the forefront of our ongoing efforts to ensure that cricket can learn and share best coaching practice with other sports and I am delighted that he has been chosen to be part of such a prestigious and innovative programme,” Hugh Morris, the ECB’s managing director of England cricket, said. “It is a tremendous personal honour for him and will undoubtedly be of long-term benefit to our game.””I am proud and honoured to have been selected for this fantastic programme,” Moores said. “I have always thrived in elite coaching environments and to be working with top coaches from other sports will be an incredible experience. I continue to have very strong ambitions for my coaching career within cricket and I see this as a great marker in that path. I’d like to thank Lancashire CCC and the ECB for their support throughout this process.”Lancashire’s Cricket Director Mike Watkinson added: “We are delighted that Peter has been accepted to be a part of this world class coaching programme. Despite his successes and achievements as a coach he always strives to improve personally and create a challenging environment for himself and his players. This will be a great opportunity to further develop and share knowledge and experiences across the various sports.”

Hogg pips Anderson to bowling honours

James Anderson had to bide his time before finding success with the second new ball on a day where Lancashire took control with an impressive all-round bowling performance.

While his England colleagues Tim Bresnan and Stuart Broad were quickly enjoying considerable success in their first forays into the Championship season, James Anderson had to bide his time before finding rewards with the second new ball on a day where Lancashire took control with an impressive all-round bowling performance.Anderson got through five spells of varying length and looked in fine fettle, generating bounce and movement off a surface that was far more docile for the other bowlers. He was convinced he had Robert Key caught behind early, but had to wait until his 19th over to open the wicket tally when he breached the defences of Mike Powell, who was earlier dropped in the gully on 6 and had been holding Kent together with a stubborn 57.He then added Matt Coles, the England Lions allrounder who was banished from the winter tour alongside Ben Stokes, when he pulled obligingly to deep square-leg as Kent lost 6 for 73 having been handily placed on 130 for 2 shortly before tea.On a day where Lancashire’s success came from their collective efforts, the individual bowling honours went to Kyle Hogg, a player who, unlike Anderson, has never quite lived up to the potential he showed early in his career. He was, in fact, part of the same England Academy intake as Anderson in 2002-03 – when it was based in Adelaide – and the story goes that when Anderson was called up to the full squad in Australia there was a suggestion the selectors should have gone for Hogg instead.Hogg, though, has never quite threatened an England career but has put in good service for Lancashire over the last 10 years. Yet he was not certain of his place for this match, a late decision coming down to a choice between him and Wayne White to accommodate Anderson. “I was probably a bit lucky we had that Yorkshire game last week where I batted and bowled pretty well,” Hogg admitted. “We’ve got a good squad and everyone is expected to fight for their place.”Hogg made the opening breakthrough in the fourth over when he trapped Sam Northeast half forward and after lunch pinned Key, who during the morning needed assistance in replacing his box, in similar fashion. Lancashire’s attack was supremely accurate throughout the day – as supported by the tally of 19 boundaries, although a slow outfield also played a part in that – and it was not until midway through the afternoon session that Kent were scoring above two-an-over.”We bowled well throughout the day and got our rewards in the last session,” Hogg said. “You look at their team and it’s packed with good batsmen and you want to build pressure all day long. It’s no good letting them off, that’s what we base our game around.”Kent’s policy was perfectly justified, especially after taking the brave decision to bat first on an overcast morning, but their lack of significant progress meant that should a clump of wickets fall they would be in trouble. However, it was not one of the frontline bowlers who began the slide, rather Steven Croft’s part-time offspin, which trapped Brendan Nash lbw on the back foot. In the second over after the break Simon Kerrigan gained the fourth lbw of the innings when an arm-ball skidded on to Daniel Bell-Drummond.Hogg was then recalled to the attack and struck with his first ball when Darren Stevens nibbled outside off and was well caught by Gareth Cross diving one-handed in front of first slip. Glen Chapple, who demoted himself from the new-ball role due to Anderson’s return, took Geraint Jones’ off stump as a wobble became a full-blown collapse.Research, although not fully verified, suggested that this was the first time since 2007, in a match against Durham, that Chapple had not taken the new ball when he had played in a Championship game. “I thought I’d be bowling after an hour,” Hogg said, “but Chappy said I was taking the new ball with Jimmy. Chappy’s record and Jimmy’s records speak for themselves, it sometimes puts you under a bit of pressure not wanting to let the side down but you just have to back yourself.”

Surrey risk unravelling again

Five matches, no wins, two defeats: Surrey’s season already has the feel of an expensive failure, a tale of over-inflated expectations

Five matches, no wins, two defeats: Surrey’s season already has the feel of an expensive failure, a tale of over-inflated expectations. Chris Adams, their team director, made reference to the impact of the season-ending injury to their captain, Graeme Smith, but made it clear, too, that it was time his squad began to deliver performances as a team in four-day cricket, rather than simply showing snapshots of their talent in disconnected moments.Nottinghamshire have been slow starters themselves in the Championship but, in conditions that were suited to the strengths of their bowling attack – even one shorn of the mesmeric skills of Andre Adams – they had just enough weaponry to make sure that home advantage paid.”It is a disappointing outcome because I think this time was the first time our bowlers as a unit have nailed it all season in a four-day game,” Chris Adams said.”It was a bowler friendly wicket, with good grass coverage and moisture content, good pace and carry and with the overhead conditions there has been plenty of action, if not the weight of runs you would like. But you expect that at Nottinghamshire and we have no complaints – we simply did not perform as well as the opposition.”Yes, we did start the season with high expectations, but I was a player for 22 years and have been here five and in every one of those 27 seasons there have been high expectations of Surrey. This group – the players, the coaches and myself – share the same ambitions.”But we are only five games in and, with the points system as it is, if you can follow two defeats with two wins you are right back in there. We felt we were – and are – a genuinely competitive side in all competitions.”It has been a difficult couple of weeks, with Graeme going home, needing to regroup and with Gareth Batty taking on the captaincy. But if we can win our 40-over game tomorrow we will be top of our group and with a week then to address what we need to do in four-day cricket – not to just have fleeting moments in a game where we show what we are capable of but to put together a performance over four days, with bat and ball, that will get us over the line.”Nottinghamshire were always ahead in the contest and had set Surrey a daunting target of 259 to win. From 72 for 3 overnight they needed to reach the haven of lunch on the final day with no more than one or two more wickets lost to stand a realistic chance. As it was, they were eight down after Harry Gurney, the left-armer who now looks an outstanding prospect in four-day cricket, had effectively finished them off by dismissing Gary Wilson, Batty and Steven Davies in quick succession. Before that, the two vital breakthroughs had been supplied by Paul Franks, 34 and in his 18th season with the county, whose appearance in this match had been something a personal triumph after beginning the season with the double-edged honour of being second XI captain.Franks knew his opportunities this season would be limited but his form has been good enough to warrant selection as Adams continues to rehabilitate after a calf injury and his performance with the ball in the first innings persuaded stand-in captain James Taylor to turn to him rather than Ajmal Shahzad as first change.Shahzad seems short of confidence – in Franks’ words “still learning how to bowl at Trent Bridge”. Franks, on the other hand, knows conditions here as well as anyone and it was he who shot the biggest hole in Surrey’s hopes when Rory Burns, who had played with style and assurance in reaching 53 from 87 balls, was caught behind. Franks had been angling the ball into the opener’s pads but then tempted him with some width and an expansive drive proved his downfall.”It was good to be back in the side, absolutely,” Franks said. “I’ve been here a long time and I’ve had to fight all the way through that time and I was made aware of the fact that I would have to fight for my place this year.”But it was never the case, as has been written, that the club told me I could leave, it was more the other way around, of me wanting to know where I stood and what my options were.”I didn’t expect to be told I would play in every game but after such a long time in one place I just needed a bit of assurance that I was still wanted. The club were very honest with me and I feel happy with where I am, I’m just enjoying taking a bit of pressure off myself and savouring days like today.”

Burns, weather keep Northants at bay

An unbeaten 67 by Joe Burns and a torrential afternoon downpour checked Northamptonshire’s bid for victory against Leicestershire at Grace Road. The heavy rain that arrived shortly after lunch left the ground saturated and, following a 5pm inspection, umpires Martin Bodenham and Steve O’Shaughnessy had little option but to abandon play for the day. It left Leicestershire on 142 for 3, still needing another 276 runs to avoid the follow-on. But with only one day remaining, Leicestershire will now have high hopes of saving the game. They began the third day at 47 for 2, with Burns on 15 and Ned Eckersley 19, and both batsmen rode their luck in the early overs with Andrew Hall causing all manner of problems with his accurate medium-paced cutters. But showing plenty of resilience, the third-wicket pair survived, with Burns particularly impressive. He has struggled for form since arriving a month ago to replace Ramnaresh Sarwan, away with the West Indies in the Champions Trophy, as Leicestershire’s overseas player. In his previous six innings in the Championship and Yorkshire Bank 40, Burns had a top score of only 21. That was on his debut against Glamorgan last month. But he gradually grew in confidence as his innings progressed and a glorious straight six off James Middlebrook put him in sight of his first half-century for the county. It eventually came off 81 balls with six fours plus the six. Eckersley also looked solid, but having reached 43 he was trapped lbw on the back foot by Middlebrook to end a stand of 99 in 34 overs.Leicestershire went into lunch on 133 for 3 but only three more overs were possible after the break before the rain swept in, with Burns on 67 and Matt Boyce on 6.
