Samarone exalta bravura do elenco e prevê evolução contra o Audax

'England are ready for India' – Boycott

Geoffrey Boycott believes England are ready for the challenge of taking on India, the world’s No. 1 Test team, who arrive in the country next month for the start of a four-Test series

Andrew Miller in Southampton21-Jun-2011Geoffrey Boycott believes England are ready for the challenge of taking on India, the world’s No. 1 Test team, who arrive in the country next month for the start of a four-Test series. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo after the third Test against Sri Lanka had finished as a draw, Boycott said the form of captain Andrew Strauss was the only major concern in a side that was otherwise brimful of confidence, and added the height, pace and accuracy of Chris Tremlett was sure to provide India’s batsmen with a formidable challenge.”I think we’re ready for India,” Boycott said. “England are in a good position. Everyone but Strauss is playing well, so unless we get serious injuries, we’re ready. Strauss’s place is not in jeopardy. He’s the captain, and he’s got a terrific record. But he needs to get runs in the middle because he didn’t get any against Sri Lanka.”Watch out, India•Getty Images

Strauss finished the series with a meagre tally of 27 runs in four innings, and after the match it was announced he would finetune his preparations by playing for Somerset during India’s practice match in Taunton, starting July 15. “Strauss has a problem against left-arm seamers, so Zaheer Khan will enjoy that,” said Boycott. “He needs to face a lot of left-arm seamers in the nets and get used to the angle. Right-arm bowlers coming round the wicket is a different thing altogether.”In general terms, however, England could hardly wish to be in a better frame of mind going in to one of the most anticipated Test series in recent years. Every other member of England’s top seven is playing at or near the top of their game; Ian Bell confirmed his coming-of-age with two centuries in three Tests against Sri Lanka, and Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott picked upfrom where they left off in the Ashes with 557 runs in the series between them.”Cook is playing out of his skin, Bell is playing out of his skin, Trott’s playing well too, and Kevin Pietersen played a fantastic innings of 85,” said Boycott. “It was the best he’s played for a long time, better than his double-hundred in Adelaide, because 75% of runs were scored in the V between mid-off and mid-on. His judgment of line and length, and his defensive technique were spot on, and the only way he got out, in my opinion, was a little bit of ego. He wanted a hundred before the close, and flashed at a wide one.”However, the player who really captured the imagination against Sri Lanka was the Man of the Series, Tremlett, whose formidable 6’8″ frame posed unique problems in each of the three Tests. He finished with 15 wickets at 23.40, and also forced Sri Lanka’s captain Tillakaratne Dilshan to miss the final match with a broken right thumb. Afterwards, Boycott said his methods were reminiscent of three of the greats of the game.”There’s Ambrose, Joel Garner and Glenn McGrath,” he said. “When you get tall men who bowl just short of a length, it becomes very difficult to get over the top of the ball. When you’re batting, you want to be defending with the bat at 45 degrees, so that the ball hits and goes down. When it gets up too high but it’s not a bouncer length, you can’t just duck and weave because you’ve nowhere left to go. It’s then that your fingers get trapped, the ball can go to slip or gully, and it causes innumerable problems.”After coming on as first-change in Sri Lanka’s first innings, Tremlett was promoted to the new ball at the expense of Stuart Broad, who had struggled for rhythm early on, but grew in confidence as the game progressed. Boycott approved of the move, saying Tremlett and James Anderson, with their contrasting styles, were the logical pairing to lead the line against India.”I’ve never thought of Stuart Broad as an opening bowler,” said Boycott. “He doesn’t move the ball enough and when he does swing it he does it from the arm, he doesn’t swing it late like Jimmy Anderson, who goes down the pitch then swings. The earlier it swings, the easier it is to play with it, whichever way it’s going.”Stuart swings from the arm, and a lot of the time it doesn’t swing at all, although he’s got some pace,” he added. “I think he needs to be a first-change seamer. If he can bowl line and length in the corridor of uncertainty on a fullish length, use the bouncer sparingly, wisely, and accurately, he can do a very good job for England, because he can bat a bit as well. He’s a bit of an allrounder, but he’s not an opening bowler.”Despite his confidence in their abilities, Boycott was critical of England’s failure to close out the contest in spite of the weather. “England didn’t win this game because of way they performed on the first day,” he said. “They won the toss in great conditions and should have bowled Sri Lanka out for 80-100. To let them get 184 meant wasted runs and wasted time, because they’d have had three extra hours to bowl before the rain, and Sri Lanka would have been much more down. It was pretty ordinary on a great bowling pitch.”

Prior expects tough final day

In 2007, with a little help from the weather, India held on nine down at Lord’s and went on to win the series. England are determined there won’t be a repeat this time as they search for the nine scalps needed to take a 1-0 lead

Andrew McGlashan at Lord's24-Jul-2011In 2007, with a little help from the weather, India held on nine wickets down in the first Test at Lord’s and went on to win the series. England are determined there won’t be a repeat this time as they search for the nine scalps that will put them 1-0 up. However, if the evidence of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman seeing out the final hour is anything to go by, it will be a day of sweat and toil. This time the rain should stay away and the buzzword for the home side will be patience. India have had to reshuffle their batting order after illness to Sachin Tendulkar and injury to Gautam Gambhir, but they will be hard to shift wherever they come in. Having worked themselves into such a dominant position, and overcome a potentially game-changing spell from Ishant Sharma, England are aware how crucial finishing the job will be.”It’s very important,” said Matt Prior, whose unbeaten 103 propelled England to their 457-run lead. “Test wins against quality opposition don’t come about very often and we’ve got ourselves in a very good position. It will be hugely frustrating not to back that up and go through with it. But we can’t look too far ahead.”The really important thing is we come in tomorrow like we always do and look to win the first half an hour, first hour, and go from there,” he added. “If you start thinking we have to win this Test match, we have to take nine wickets, you can start building up unnecessary pressure on the bowlers. If we do what we’ve done for the last two years, keep it basic and build pressure, I’m sure we’ll have a very good day.”Matt Prior expects Rahul Dravid and company to put up a hard fight•Getty Images

England’s three quick bowlers again caused problems for the India top order on the fourth evening – with Broad bowling a marvellous spell at Rahul Dravid as his rejuvenation continued – but the final day of a Test, especially if the sun shines, is a time for the spinner to make his mark. In Graeme Swann England have the best in the world, and Harbhajan Singh was been completely outbowled during this match, but to take a significant haul against this line-up would be one of Swann’s greatest achievements.”There are still a lot of runs on that wicket,” Prior said. “There are no devils, it’s a pretty good deck, but it’s a huge amount of runs [to chase], especially when the ball gets a bit older. I think Swanny’s going to play a huge part for us, and I don’t think it’s going to be easy. There’s a lot of hard work ahead for us, and I think India’s batting is pretty strong. The ball might not be swinging and seaming like it did in the first innings.”As early as the third over of India’s chase James Anderson was bowling with just two slips plus a man at deep square-leg. Andrew Strauss’s captaincy is well known to verge on the cautious and he also had a deep point in place during the final over. Prior, though, believes success will come not by stacking the slip cordon, but by drying up India’s runs in a similar manner to how England found success in the Ashes.”It’s very easy to think we have a good lead and over-attack,” he said. “If it was a quick, bouncy wicket you could have all those catching men, but I don’t think that’s necessarily the way we’ll get wickets. We need to give bowlers an opportunity to get [the ball] up and swing it. You need to give them cover, you don’t just want batsmen pushing through the covers. If we turn up and it starts swinging round corners we’ll probably have more catchers in, but we’ll take our wickets by building pressure and not letting the Indian batsmen score quickly.”

Batsmen lacked application – Atapattu

Sri Lanka’s batting coach Marvan Atapattu has blamed a lack of application from the Sri Lanka batsmen for the team’s poor performance in the ongoing ODI series against Australia

Sa'adi Thawfeeq21-Aug-2011

Sri Lanka’s batsmen have failed to click as a unit, according to their batting coach Marvan Atapattu•AFP

Sri Lanka’s batting coach Marvan Atapattu has blamed a lack of application from the Sri Lanka batsmen for the team’s poor performance in the ongoing ODI series against Australia. Australia took an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series after they beat the hosts by five wickets in the fourth ODI in Colombo on August 19.”The batting is pretty disappointing, no doubt about it,” Atapattu said. “It’s more to do with application [rather] than anything else. We know the potential that we have, but we have not gone all the way to show what we are made of.”It’s consistency in application that we lack. Apart from one or two batsmen, it has nothing to do with technique or anything like that. It’s more to do with application.”Sri Lanka have failed to bat out their 50 overs in the three games they have lost and were bowled out for just 132 on Sunday, which disappointed Atapattu. “Being ranked No. 2 [Sri Lanka were ranked second in the ICC rankings for ODI teams at the start of the series] we should be doing much more than what we have. It is disappointing to see the personnel in the team and their performances. We look at the team and say this is one of the best batting line-ups in the world; although we are playing against the No. 1 [ODI] team, we as a batting unit believe that we are much more capable than this.”Upul Tharanga, the leading run scorer for Sri Lanka in the series so far, is the only top-order batsman for the hosts to average above 40. Captain Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene have all struggled for consistency, with none of them averaging above 37. “The problem we have is that it is only the same two or three batsmen who are always contributing. The pressure on these batsmen is more. What we are trying to do is get the rest of the batsmen to also contribute.”Atapattu said that batsman Dinesh Chandimal, who was dropped from the squad after the first three ODIs, had some technical issues that needed to be resolved. “Chandimal has changed a bit since he got his last fifty in Manchester. There is nothing wrong with his hitting – he is a fantastic hitter of the ball; probably the best in the country today. He needs to fine-tune certain areas before he faces a good bowling attack like Australia’s next time around.”Sri Lanka’s batting line-up has undergone changes in recent times: Thilina Kandamby who was vice-captain on the England tour was dropped for the Australia series, while, along with Chandimal, allrounder Thisara Perera was dropped after the first three games against Australia. Atapattu suggested the changes were not helping but said the batsmen in the side should be delivering.”It is the duty of the captain and me as batting coach to make the best use of the batsmen selected in the squad. There is a lack of consistency in the batting line-ups we have been given; but we don’t have any control over that. The players who are in the squad should make the runs. The reason for not reaching even a total of 200 [in the fourth ODI] is because the batsmen failed to contribute.”My personal opinion is to give as much opportunities to a player and if he doesn’t perform to expectations then we will have to look at another potential player and give him similar opportunities, but we must have patience with them. If we keep on changing players from day to day we will remain in the same position always. We cannot expect to produce an Arjuna [Ranatunga], Aravinda [de Silva], Hashan [Tillakaratne] or Roshan [Mahanama] overnight – it will take some time. Until such time we have to be patient. If we don’t get the expected results from the present crop of players then we will have to adopt that policy [of giving new players opportunities].”The final ODI will be played in Colombo on Monday which will be followed by three Tests in Galle, Pallekele and Colombo.

Rotate seniors to grow young players – Kapil

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has said that retirement should not be forced upon the senior players

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Sep-2011

Sourav Ganguly: “The day their performance drops, they will leave on their own.”•AFP

Kapil Dev, the former India captain, has said the selectors need to rotate the seniors – Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman – in the Test team so that the younger players can be given opportunities without weakening the side too much.”All three seniors – Tendulkar, Dravid and Laxman – should not play together in a single Test,” Kapil told Indian news channel Aaj Tak. “Two of them can play and one can be rested so that a youngster can be tested in his place. In this manner, we can give a chance to a talented youngster without taking too much risk and making too many changes all of a sudden.”Kapil also said the selectors needed to take tough calls and wanted an orderly phasing out of the senior players. “It is the selectors who will have to take a call on their retirement,” he said. “A player never likes to retire. Selectors should see the bigger picture and take a tough decision. But, they [selectors] should do this while giving full respect to these seniors.”Tendulkar and Dravid are both 38, while Laxman is 37. Dravid was Man of the Series during the recent Tests in England, scoring 461 runs at an average of 76.83. Tendulkar and Laxman, though, had poor tours, averaging 34.12 and 22.75.Sourav Ganguly, however, said retirement should not be forced on the senior players because India did not have the talent to replace them at the moment. “Players like Tendulkar, Dravid and Laxman should decide on their own when it comes to taking a call on quitting the game,” Ganguly said. “The day their performance drops, they will leave on their own.”Ganguly had retired from international cricket after the Test series against Australia at home in 2008, at a time when there was pressure on the seniors and an influx of youth in the Indian limited-overs sides. No batsman, however, has been able to fill the gap Ganguly left in Test middle-order, with neither Yuvraj Singh nor Suresh Raina cementing their spots.”It is good to see youngsters perform so well in the shorter format but I am more worried about Tests,” Ganguly said. “We haven’t seen anyone who can challenge these seniors. Definitely, the time hasn’t come to phase out seniors in Tests.”Kapil, however, disagreed with Ganguly’s view. “Everyone knows that it is not going to be easy to find replacements for the likes of Tendulkar, Dravid and Laxman. It is going to be extremely difficult. But youngsters, even though they might have failed in whatever chances they’ve got till now, have to be given another go.”Actually the problem is not with their [youngsters’] talent. It is their poor fitness level that is letting them down,” Kapil said. “Coach and selectors will have to play a big role in coming times. Youngsters should also learn to take pride in their cricket.”Former India allrounder Madan Lal seconded Kapil’s view, saying the youngsters in the team lacked proper work ethic. He also said Suresh Raina, who averaged 13.12 in the four Tests in England, should not be persisted with.”They [the youngsters] have to up their fitness levels. Players like [Virat] Kohli, [Cheteshwar] Pujara and Rohit [Sharma] will have to be given chances. I will not give another chance to Raina, though, as he has already wasted too many. Instead, Yuvraj [Singh], who hasn’t got much opportunity in Tests, should be tested again.”
