When West Brom came close to signing Varane

West Brom had a transfer disaster back in 2012 when they failed to capture the signature of then Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

Steve Clarke was in charge at the Hawthorns at the time, and it was his son John who revealed that the Baggies had a chance to sign the French international who has gone on to win many major honours, including the World Cup with his country in 2018.

At the time Clarke’s former colleague Jose Mourinho was in charge at the Bernabeu, and due to their relationship it made a transfer for Varane, who was just 19 at the time, possible.

If it had happened then who knows whether Varane would have gone on to be as successful as he has been. It’s likely that with all that talent he wouldn’t have stayed at the Hawthorns for a while but West Brom certainly would have been able to get a huge fee for him. He is now rated at a whopping £54m compared to the £9m he was valued at in August of 2012.

We will never know just how close the move actually was, but it’s safe to say that there was a real chance of it happening and therefore we think this makes it one of the club’s greatest transfer mistakes.

Now at 28-years of age, Varane is playing in the Premier League with Manchester United having eventually made the move to England last summer from Los Blancos.

The Frenchman has been described as “world-class” by journalist Andy Mitten but has been part of a United side that has been struggling massively this season. That said, he is yet to feature on a consistent basis missing 14 games in his first season with the Red Devils through injuries.

Despite this, when he has been called upon he’s impressed, and given his experience and quality he’s one of the few players that United need to be keeping hold off for next season.

There’s a possibility that he could face the Baggies next season if they draw United in the Carabao Cup or FA Cup, which could see him finally take to the turf at The Hawthorns, albeit for the away side.

Given where he has been it’s hard to picture him in a West Brom shirt, but rewind to 2012 and it was closer than you think.

Disappointed but it's not in my hands – Yuvraj

The Indian selectors have ensured that Yuvraj Singh’s self-admitted “toughest year” with the Indian team continues

Yuvraj Singh has been dropped from the India squad for the Tests against Australia•Associated Press

Yuvraj Singh has reacted to being dropped for the Australia series with “disappointment”, pointing to his most recent performances for India when he scored a century and a fifty in a tour game and a Test in Sri Lanka. He was in Patiala, playing in an invitational tournament, when news of his being dropped reached him. “I am disappointed. Disappointments are a part of my life these days… “Asked whether it was a lack of form that had led to him being omitted from the Test team, Yuvraj referred to the Sri Lanka tour. “If that’s not good enough for selection, I can’t say. Selection is not in my hands.” He showed a flash of humour, though, when asked what he would do if he couldn’t regain his place in the team. “If I keep getting dropped, maybe I’ll have to do something different,”. he said.Yuvraj’s exclusion comes after a period in which he has grappled with injury and loss of form. It has been more than year since he scored his last century for India in a full international, a fact which, he told ESPNcricinfo, bothers him. “It has been the toughest year, in terms of managing my body and my performances,” he said in a wide-ranging conversation with this reporter a few days before Monday’s squad selection. “I’ve been injured a lot, which is mentally very hard.”Three fractures of his hand, a cartilage tear in the wrist, neck strains and dengue fever have made his tenth season in international cricket most forgettable. In the past year he averaged 33 in six Tests and 23 in 15 ODIs, “It’s just very sad because it’s all come at a time when batsmen peak – you’re supposed to hit your best form at 28 or 29,” he said.Following a disappointing World Twenty20 in the West Indies, where he scored 74 runs in five matches, Yuvraj was dropped for the Asia Cup but returned to the side for the tour of Sri Lanka with three Tests and an ODI tri-series. The tour included what Yuvraj calls the “hardest part” of his year.In the first Test, he scored 52 and 5 in Galle, before missing the second with fever. He was declared fit to play in the third but was passed over from the final Xi in favour of Suresh Raina, the debut centurion of the second Test. “The roughest part (this year) was in Sri Lanka,” he said. “I scored a century in the tour game and fifty in the first Test before I fell sick and then didn’t get picked for the third Test.”Was his omission from the third Test, and the decision to pick Raina, explained to him? “If somebody wants to give me an explanation, they can come and give me an explanation. Neither was I given one, nor did I seek an explanation. It’s not in my hands to be picked or not to be picked. If the team wants me, I’m there. If they don’t want me, I’m happy to serve the drinks.”Despite the setbacks, he sounded bullish on the future. “I have managed to be strong.. I’m sure things are going to come good soon It’s time to really push the pedal and hit peak performance.” His time starts on October 1 – not in Mohali, where India and Australia play the first Test, but in Jaipur, leading the Rest of India against Mumbai in the Irani Cup.

Celtic must axe Barkas and Ajeti

Celtic saw many players come and go out of the club during their previous summer and winter transfer windows as Ange Postecoglou made his mark on the squad.

Now that the next summer window is on the horizon, this will once again give the 56-year-old the chance to make any further changes to the squad that he sees fit.

In terms of which players that could or should be moved out of the club, we feel that the duo of goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas and striker Albian Ajeti should not be wearing Celtic shirts next season.

With a combined total of eight SPFL appearances between them this season, this shows just how far down the pecking order they are.

Looking at Barkas, the shot-stopper has only made two appearances for the Bhoys across all competitions in this campaign, conceding a goal in each of them.

The 27-year-old was slammed by Michael Stewart for his “catastrophic” error against FC Midtjylland that led to Celtic drawing 1-1 against them in their Champions League qualifying match back in July.

As for Ajeti, the striker has only started seven of the 17 games he’s appeared in, scoring three goals and providing one assist in the process.

Back in March, Frank McAvennie claimed that it was “unbelievable” that the attacker was still taking money from the club as a result of his dire performances.

When the Switzerland international has been able to get on the pitch in the SPFL, his performances haven’t done much to add cause for concern for the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi or Giorgos Giakoumakis in terms of their place in the side.

According to WhoScored, the centre-forward has only been able to earn himself a rather disappointing overall season rating of 6.47/10, making him one of the lowest-rated players in Postecoglou’s squad to start more than one league game in this campaign.

Moving forward, if Celtic have the chance to offload the duo in the summer, then they should absolutely do it without hesitation.

If they can then pick up some money in the process, this would be an ideal situation for them as the disastrous duo are not offering much to the team as things stand apart from rinsing the club financially.

Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir in Dubai for appeal

Salman Butt and Mohammad Amir arrived in Dubai on Friday to appeal against their provisional suspensions for alleged involvement in spot-fixing

Salman Butt and Mohammad Amir arrived in Dubai on Friday to appeal against their provisional suspensions for alleged involvement in spot-fixing. The pair left Lahore accompanied by their lawyers and will now appear at a hearing over Saturday and Sunday with Michael Beloff, the chairman of the ICC’s code of conduct commission.Butt and Amir, along with Mohammad Asif, were suspended by the ICC on September 2, after being charged with various offences under Article 2 of the ICC’s anti-corruption code; Asif has since withdrawn his appeal. The suspensions came after the claimed to have exposed a scam in which deliberate, planned no-balls would be bowled by Amir and Asif during the Lord’s Test against England, with the involvement of Butt, who was then captain. The ICC had initially wanted the PCB to take action against their own players, but were compelled to step in eventually after Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, indicated that the trio was available for selection for the ODI series that followed. Eventually, the players “voluntarily” withdrew from that series and the ICC handed out notices and suspended them the same day.The hearings will only concern themselves with the matter of the provisional suspensions and whether or not the ICC followed the correct procedures in taking that action. The matter of the players’ innocence or guilt and the actual charges against them will not be heard. Thus, even if the suspensions are lifted and the players allowed to return to cricket, a full hearing into the case will still take place later to determine their innocence or guilt in the matter. This is thought to be one of the reasons why Asif withdrew his appeal; unlike Amir and Butt, even if his suspension is lifted, he would not have been able to play for Pakistan immediately because he is barred – for a drug-related offence – from entering the UAE, where Pakistan’s current series against South Africa is taking place. The hearing is expected to be a detailed one where the players and their lawyers will be allowed the opportunity to build their cases. The ICC lawyers will be the only other people inside the hearing and though there is expected to be evidence from the ACSU placed in front of Beloff, he is expected to only listen to the arguments of the players and not argue or discuss their innocence or guilt. The players cannot appeal against the decision of these hearings. The next step, irrespective of the outcome here, will be the full hearing before the independent tribunal. The date of that is not yet decided and may well depend on the outcome of the ongoing police investigation over the matter in the UK, where the case against the players is with the Crown Prosecution Service.Of the three, Butt has been increasingly vocal over the last few weeks, making a number of public statements expressing confidence that his suspension will be lifted and that he will eventually be cleared. Before leaving early on Friday morning, similar sentiments were expressed once again. “Either you are guilty or you are not, and I think I am not guilty and I am sure about it,” he told reporters at the airport. He will be represented in Dubai by his lawyer Aftab Gul, a former Test cricketer, and Khalid Ranjha, a former law minister. Both share the confidence of their client. “We are going for justice in their court,” Gul said. “We can’t pre-empt what decision they give, it’s their discretion, but our case is very good. There is no strong evidence against Salman Butt on the basis of which we can say that he should remain suspended.”Amir, who has not made a statement throughout this time, said on departure that he hoped he could return to the side. He will be represented by Shahid Karim, the lawyer who defended Asif in a doping case in October 2006.Though two full days have been set aside for the hearings it is not certain that it will take that much time to reach a judgment. The two days were scheduled keeping in mind that there were three players initially appealing. “It will be eight hours hearing daily, but I don’t think it’s a 16 hours case,” Gul said.A swift return for Butt and Amir could be on the cards should a favourable decision be reached. Mohsin Khan, Pakistan’s chief selector, told that he would seek a no-objection certificate from the PCB immediately should they be cleared to play by the ICC.

No dia 14, o Fla visita o Emelec no Equador.

Liverpool: Dinnery hails Reds’ approach

Medical expert Ben Dinnery has delivered a glowing verdict on Liverpool and their willingness to embrace new technology.

The lowdown: Marginal gains

This comes after it was reported by iNews that the Reds are looking into a revolutionary new system at Kirkby that allows players to train in the dark, thus improving peripheral vision during competitive action.

The technology is produced by Okkulo and is said to help improve reflexes and could be of particular benefit to goalkeepers.

As such, Liverpool goalkeeping coach Claudio Taffarel has been contemplating using the kit at the state of the art AXA Training Centre.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-30/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest: Dinnery approves

Speaking to Football Insider, Dinnery, who runs the popular Premier Injuries website, has hailed the Anfield club for its approach to innovative ideas.

“Clubs are embracing new technologies. They are trying to gain that edge and opportunity to make a difference at the very highest level.

“Liverpool are certainly up there in terms of how regularly they try new things. The game is becoming faster and more intense. Therefore, players need to adapt. This cutting edge technology helps.

“Football was once considered a fairly aerobic sport, i.e fairly constant levels of intensity. Now, it’s a lot more anaerobic, stop-start, with a lot more explosive movements and high-intensity sprints.

“We know Liverpool love the high press. The demands on the players to react and move quicker are there. The company have been working with Durham University and have had very positive responses with their early tests.”

The verdict: Focus on fitness

This wouldn’t be the first instance of the club, and particularly Jurgen Klopp, making behind the scenes changes that could have a positive impact on performance.

Liverpool appointed former Borussia Dortmund medic Dr Andreas Schlumberger as head of recovery and performance on Merseyside in 2020, a specifically created role for the German expert.

Since then previously renowned regular injury sufferers Naby Keita, Thiago and Joel Matip have all enjoyed improved availability, amassing a combined 102 appearances so far this season compared to 58 across the entire 2020/21 campaign – thus allowing Klopp to get more out of key players and in turn embark on a potentially history-defining quadruple.

The German manager has often spoken of needing to find alternative ways of competing at the top level and should the potential new addition to the methods have a big impact it will be another feather in the cap of the club.

In other news, a key Liverpool update has emerged regarding a superstar player. Read more here.
