Hauritz caned, and Sinclair's shoelaces

Plays of the day from the second day between New Zealand and Australia in Hamilton

Hauritz’s Taylor-made record
Nathan Hauritz went for 25 runs off the 54th over of New Zealand’s innings and it was the equal-most expensive over ever bowled by an Australian in a Test. Hauritz was in the dressing rooms when the previous record was set, when AB de Villiers launched Andrew McDonald for four sixes and a single in Cape Town last year. This time it was Ross Taylor who did the damage in an over that finished with three sixes, all heaved over the on-side. It could have been worse. The second legal ball of the over was headed for six as well, until Shane Watson at deep midwicket brilliantly stopped it and tossed the ball back in before he fell over the rope. But it wasn’t the most runs scored by New Zealand in a Test over – Craig McMillan hit 26 off Younis Khan in 2000-01, also at Seddon Park.Watson’s woes
The six that Watson saved off Hauritz’s over was an impressive effort, and he had much to make up for. When Taylor was on 7 he edged off Ryan Harris and the ball sailed between Watson at first slip and Ricky Ponting at second, both of whom left the ball for the other. It was Watson’s catch, as he was the deeper man and would have needed only to move to his right a fraction to get his hand to the ball. Watson also dropped Taylor on 92, again at slip and again off Harris, this time to his left.Hot Spot gets the shot
For all the talk of Hot Spot helping with the decision review system, there have been few occasions when it has been enough to overturn a decision. Often, the front-on cameras do not capture the right angle to show contact between bat and ball. However, in this series there have been Hot Spot cameras square of the wicket as well, and that was enough to convict Taylor in the eyes of the third umpire. The side-on camera revealed clear contact between bat and ball and the on-field decision of not-out was overturned, ending Taylor’s innings on 138. He didn’t look happy walking off, but there was little doubt the decision was correct.Skippy bushed by kangaroos
Mathew “Skippy” Sinclair has waited two years for another chance at Test level and he couldn’t make use of it in the first innings in Hamilton. Sinclair was yorked by Mitchell Johnson for 11 and it continued his very poor record against Australia in Tests. In nine Tests against Australia, Sinclair’s averaged is a lowly 13.93. Sinclair has often been criticised for his lack of footwork and the Australians made sure they reminded him of that. Brad Haddin was picked up on the stump microphone asking Sinclair if his shoelaces were tied together.

Everton eye Tottenham ace Ndombele

Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol has dropped some big Everton transfer news on Tanguy Ndombele while speaking live on TV.

The Lowdown: On his way out

There have been a number of reports linking Ndombele with a move away from Tottenham Hotspur before the January transfer window shuts, but there is still a question over where he is going to end up.

He has The Sun).

Nonetheless, it looks as if he will certainly leave North London before the window closes, and the Goodison Park faithful now seem to be in with a shout.

The Latest: Solhekol update

Speaking live on Sky Sports’ The Transfer Show (via The Transfer Centre – 17:24pm), Solhekol has revealed that the Merseyside club are now among the clubs interested in taking Ndombele on loan for the rest of the season, although he is more likely to return to France, with PSG lurking:

“Tanguy Ndombele has been told he can move on loan. PSG have been in talks to sign him.

“I was told this afternoon that Everton are also one of the clubs that are interested in taking him on loan.

“But I think, as far as the player is concerned, it’s much more likely that he would want to return to France. So PSG I think are in pole position if he is to leave Spurs.”

The Verdict: Avoid

Of course, it is big for the Toffees that they are even mentioned in the same conversation as PSG in terms of Ndombele’s potential next destination, but he is a player that they should avoid signing, even on loan.

The Frenchman earns over £200,000-per-week at Hotspur Way, and the Blues would likely be asked to pay a large proportion of that from now until the end of the season, which is simply too much money and would break their wage structure – Yerry Mina is currently their highest earner on only £120,000-per-week.

Nonetheless, the fact that the Lilywhites would be willing to let their record signing go out on loan is not a good sign, and is testament to Ndombele’s poor form and attitude at THFC, where he has only managed to score six goals and make five assists in total in the Premier League since his arrival (Transfermarkt).

Thus, especially without a permanent manager being put in place as of now, the EFC board must look elsewhere for more reliable options.

Hogg keeps Lancashire ahead

Three wickets for Kyle Hogg, a late call-up, helped Lancashire cope without Saj Mahmood in the vanguard of their attack as Somerset ended a truncated day still with some rebuilding to do if they are to deliver a meaningful reply to what might turn out to

Three wickets for Kyle Hogg, a late call-up, helped Lancashire cope without Saj Mahmood in the vanguard of their attack as Somerset ended a truncated day still with some rebuilding to do if they are to deliver a meaningful reply to what might turn out to be a competitive first-innings score by the home side.Mahmood, who has a sore calf as a consequence of making an important 64-run contribution to Lancashire’s disjointed 292 on the opening day, did not take the field for any of the 48.4 overs possible on day two and his fitness to bowl at all in this match is unclear.Given that he had bowled so well against Warwickshire in the last round, Mahmood’s absence was a blow to Lancashire but Hogg seized his chance well in the circumstances after the weather, which curtailed their attempt to beat Warwickshire and claim as third win in three Championship matches, gave the Manchester skyline a depressingly familiar look.Persistent drizzle denied any play before lunch, after which the teams emerged in the hope of two full sessions only for dark clouds to settle over the ground and force another two hour stoppage for bad light.Hogg would not have played had it not been for the injury to all-rounder Tom Smith but took his chance with both hands. Smith’s non-appearance has had useful consequences all round for Lancashire, who were rewarded for promoting Luke Sutton to open in his stead what may prove a vital century from the wicketkeeper-batsman.Hogg, now 26, has still to properly realise the potential he showed as a teenager, when he bowled with such obvious inherent ability that for a while it was hard to decide whether it was he or Jimmy Anderson who had the brighter future. Unfortunately, he has had his share of injury problems, which can be as much a psychological as a physical hindrance in a pace bowler’s development. But at 6ft 4ins he has one natural threat that remains unaffected and he found a rhythm to make it work for him here in as eyecatching a performance as he has delivered for some time.Successful with the last ball on Tuesday, he struck again with only his second ball of the day during the brief window for play after lunch. Nick Compton, playing forward defensively, was adjudged to have made thin contact as Sutton claimed a catch, although the hesitation that preceded his walk back may have been a matter of dismay at what was not the best of shots rather than any disagreement with the decision. From 14-2, Marcus Trescothick did his best to organise a Somerset recovery and a 107-ball half century was evidence of his enduring quality as Glen Chapple ran in as willingly as ever with little luck and Daren Powell bowled with hostility but only intermittent threat. It was when Hogg switched to the Stretford End for the first time that Trescothick met his match. There is a bit of variable bounce in this track and Hogg surprised the left-hander with one that leapt up as Sutton claimed another catch. The wicket ended a partnership of 101 with Zander de Bruyn, who was himself leg before to left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan’s flighted second ball as he tried to complete his half-century with a sweep. The light quality dipped again but with Steven Croft bowling off spin at the other end the session reached its intended conclusion with James Hildreth and Jos Buttler probably relieved to reach the close with no further alarms.

Everton: Moshiri making Steve Hitchen howler

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri is sleepwalking into another Rafa Benitez-esque howler amid reports linking the club with Steve Hitchen.

What’s the story?

Following Hitchen’s exit from his scouting and recruitment role at Spurs, The Guardian have claimed that the Toffees are interested in giving him a similar position at Goodison Park.

The report claims that the Premier League club are embarking on this new restructure along with Frank Lampard as their new manager, with Everton having been working “without a director of football, head of recruitment and manager of scouting after the respective departures of Marcel Brands, Grétar Steinsson and Dan Purdy were announced in early December.”

Would be an expensive nightmare for Everton

While this previous summer might have seen Everton keep the purse-strings shut at Goodison Park, that has been the major exception to the rule since Moshiri’s arrival at the club.

The Toffees have been very big spenders in the transfer market, but have had very little to show for it, and it’s no surprise that journalist Alan Myers delivered this verdict on the club’s recruitment strategy.

He said: “Wow. I heard in the radio earlier, only Man City, Man Utd, Barcelona, PSG and Inter Milan had a bigger net spend than Everton across Europe over previous 10 windows (before this summer).

“Even the richest owner of any football club must surely look at the return for that investment and ask the question, why has this happened? Can it be just a string of failed managerial appointments or is it far more than that?”

In Hitchen, Moshiri would be making another Benitez-esque mistake, with his track record at his most recent club very unconvincing, if not down-right woeful.

After being appointed as Spurs’ chief scout back in February 2017, only Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Lucas Moura remain with the north London side’s first-team under Antonio Conte as regular fixtures, while a far bigger number are either on the peripheries of the squad, or have already left.

In fact, the 2019 summer arrivals of Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso – both for a combined fee of around £115m – have actually both just left the Lilywhites in the January transfer window just gone by, a real indication of the kind of shocking misses that Hitchen has made at Spurs.

The last thing Everton need now is for another appointment from Moshiri that leads to yet more years of suffering in the transfer market.

Hitchen’s record at Spurs in recent seasons has been underwhelming to say the least, and would just be an expensive nightmare at Goodison Park.

Meanwhile, Lampard could bring the best out of this man…
