Rangers: James Sands set to join on loan

An update has emerged regarding Rangers’ efforts to add a new signing to their ranks at Ibrox during the January transfer window…

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Mail, the Gers are in advanced discussions over a deal for New York City midfielder James Sands.

The report claims that Rangers are poised to land the 21-year-old on loan until the end of the current campaign, before then re-signing him on another season-long loan.

Masterstroke

Giovanni van Bronckhorst could land a masterstroke by securing this deal to sign Sands on an initial 18-month loan. Financially, it appears to be a fantastic deal for Rangers, as they are able to enjoy his talents for a season-and-a-half before deciding whether or not he is a good fit in the long run.

This means that they will not be out of pocket significantly if Sands is unable to make an impact in Glasgow. If it doesn’t work out, the club can send him back to New York and cut short his loan, instead of potentially losing out on a transfer fee and struggling to find a buyer to take him off their hands. This is why the deal could be a masterstroke from a financial point of view.

In terms of what happens on the pitch, his performances in the MLS are extremely promising. His former coach Patrick Vieira previously hailed him after he handed the youngster a first-team debut at the age of 16, saying: “We wanted to give him an experience because he’s been doing really well in the academy.

“We wanted to see him to see how he would cope with the intensity and the level of tactical, mental and physical demand. I’ve been really impressed with him – he’s really calm, composed and good on the ball. He’s really smart as a footballer.

“I think we have a special talent in our football club.”

The 21-year-old averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.91 in MLS last year, having averaged a score of 7.01 in 2020 and 6.88 the year before. This shows that he has been consistently delivering good performances across three campaigns despite his young age, suggesting that he has the potential to come in at Rangers and become a solid performer for the Light Blues if he is able to adapt to Scottish football.

Sands is also hugely versatile and could help plug the gap left by the departure of Nathan Patterson to Everton today. He is capable of playing at right-back, centre-back, defensive midfield and central midfield, which could make him a valuable asset for Van Bronckhorst to use in a variety of ways on the pitch.

Along with the financial aspect of the deal, this is why a loan move for the 21-year-old could be a masterstroke from the Rangers coach. It is now down to him and Ross Wilson to ensure that they can get it over the line so that the American can come in and start playing straight after the winter break.

Benitez wants new centre-back at Everton

Everton are having a nightmare of a season but Rafael Benitez has been trying to find opportunities to turn it around by getting thoroughly stuck into the winter transfer window.

In an attempt to win over the support of the fans and put Everton in a better position come the end of the season, a fourth January signing is rumoured to be on the horizon.

What’s the word?

Sky Sports journalist Pete O’Rourke has revealed that the Toffees manager could already be working on securing his fourth signing of the month, with a specific position in mind.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “They were looking to possibly bring in a new centre-back, and that’s what Rafa Benitez has got his heart set on, he thinks the defence needs sorting out.”

The club has already signed two defenders in January so far, with right back Nathan Patterson joining from Rangers and left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko signing from Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kiev.

Fans will be buzzing

If the performance against Norwich on Saturday afternoon is anything to go by, Everton are desperate for central defenders, after Michael Keane scored an own goal and put on a poor display throughout the game as the Toffees were defeated 2-1 at Carrow Road.

Some fans may be buzzing at the prospect of a potential new centre back at the club, given some of the scathing reactions to Saturday’s horror show in Norfolk.

As for the manager, he is treading on thin ice with many fans, and the signing of a quality centre-back could salvage whatever support he has left at the club, with the team 15th in the Premier League and just six points off the relegation zone.

Despite the desire and intention to turn the season around for Everton, Benitez may have managed his last game for the Toffees as reports suggested that he could be sacked by the club imminently after the embarrassing defeat on Saturday afternoon.

If the unpopular Spaniard can land a new centre-back as a parting gift at Goodison Park, it may well represent good news on the double for the Everton faithful.

Mortaza opts out of England ODIs

Mashrafe Mortaza had already ruled himself out of contention for next month’s Test series•Bangladesh Cricket Board

Bangladesh fast bowler Mashrafe Mortaza will be unavailable for the remaining ODIs against England, after requesting the selectors not to consider him for the remainder of the series following a disagreement over his fitness. Allrounder Nasir Hossain was included in the squad ahead of the second ODI in Dhaka on Tuesday.”Mortaza has informed us and Cricket Operations that he has to be by the side of his ailing mother and therefore was withdrawing himself from the rest of the ODI Series,” Rafiqul Alam, the chairman of selectors, said. He had already ruled himself out of next month’s Test series against England. After eight months on the sidelines, Mortaza had been named in the 13-man squad for the three one-dayers against England. He returned to competitive action for a Bangladesh Cricket Board XI in Fatullah on Thursday, his first appearance in national colours since a knee injury during the tour of West Indies in July. However, he went wicketless in both that game and the first ODI, and though his experience was sorely missed in the tense closing stages of the second match, which England won by two wickets, Bangladesh’s captain, Shakib Al Hasan, fuelled rumours of a rift between the two players when he called into question Mortaza’s enduring worth at international level.”The way Mashrafe bowled before his injury, that Mashrafe we might have missed tonight,” he said, after the young seamer, Shafiul Islam, had conceded 23 game-turning runs from his last 11 balls of the game. “But the way he bowled in the last match and the practice match [at Fatullah], not really.”Shakib later played down the extent of the falling-out between the two players, adding that the pair had spoken by phone on the day after the match. “He needs some time to get back to full confidence and rhythm,” Shakib told Cricinfo. “He needs to play some games and get match-fit again.”Jamie Siddons, Bangladesh’s coach, added that Mashrafe had “perhaps over-reacted a bit” when informed of his omission from the second match, but insisted he would remain in contention for future selection. “We definitely want him to play in the Asia Cup and go to England,” he told Cricinfo, “because he’ll be an asset there with his swing and a bit of swing. We need him back.”In total, Mortaza has undergone six knee reconstructions in the space of eight years, but his latest return to fitness followed arguably the most demoralising setback yet. In July 2009, he was handed the captaincy for Bangladesh’s tour of the Caribbean to allow Mohammad Ashraful to concentrate on his batting. But he was able to bowl just 6.3 overs in their famous Test victory in Kingstown, his first match in charge, before collapsing in his follow through on the second day of the game.

É a coroa do rei.

Villa fans react to Boubacar Kamara links

Aston Villa have Marseille’s Boubacar Kamara on their list of midfield targets.

That’s according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, and as to be expected, a number of Villa fans have been sharing their thoughts on the rumour.

Kamara is 22 years of age and is primarily a defensive midfielder, an area of the pitch that Villa want to bolster following Marvelous Nakamba’s injury.

He is out of contract with the Ligue 1 club at the end of the season and has been linked with the likes of Leeds United and Manchester United this month.

However, it appears as if a Villa Park switch could be on the cards in the final days of the January transfer window following Romano’s claim. The journalist revealed that Kamara is also on Villa’s midfield shortlist alongside Juventus’ Rodrigo Bentancur.

Leeds eye new David Batty in EFL star

Leeds United’s midfield search could take them back into the Championship this month.

The Yorkshire giants are said to hold an interest in Blackburn Rovers dynamo John Buckley, as revealed by reporter Dharmesh Sheth on Sky Sports last week (14th January, 11:24am).

Buckley signed a new long-term deal last February, so he may well command a ‘substantial bid’ to prise him away from Ewood Park before deadline day on January 31st.

But the 22-year-old gem is the perfect fit for manager Marcelo Bielsa.

“He’s a centre-midfielder which is a position Leeds desperately need to strengthen in. He’s versatile as well which is a bonus, so it’s a big signing if they can do it,” claimed former Premier League talisman Kevin Phillips to Football Insider.

Indeed, the Whites are in desperate need of reinforcements, particularly in the Argentinian’s engine room, where there has not been an addition in four years when Adam Forshaw joined from Middlesbrough.

Buckley, a product of Rovers’ youth academy, has been ever-so-important to Tony Mowbray and his side’s fortunes this season – as per WhoScored, he is among their most creative options, having registered seven assists and 1.2 key passes per game but he also leads the squad for tackles (2.5 per game) too.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

“The future is bright for John Buckley and this football club because he’s such a talented boy,” claimed the Blackburn boss back in March. “This boy will play in the Premier League in my opinion.”

He has also lauded him as an “exciting talent” in the past.

The 5 foot 8 midfielder seems like a powerful and industrious presence in the heart of the pitch. An all-rounder with that cutting edge both in attack and in defence.

You could draw some comparisons to that of Leeds legend David Batty, who at 5 foot 7 was more than just an enforcer at Elland Road.

He gave his all for the club in what talkSPORT describe as the ‘Claude Makelele position’ before the Frenchman made it ‘cool’ and whilst he may not have had the same glistening career or technical ability, there are certainly similarities to be made.

Capable of dictating play but also being hugely resolute in the engine room, Buckley could well become Leeds’ next Batty if the Yorkshire outfit manages to secure a move for him this month.

Ironically, the United icon did go onto play for Blackburn Rovers – where he won the Premier League – before returning to the club.
