A partir daquele momento, mudou o resultado.

'Everybody misread the wicket' – Hilditch

Australia’s chairman of selectors, has said that Australia lost The Oval Test and subsequently the Ashes because all parties involved completely misread the pitch

Andrew Hilditch, Australia’s chairman of selectors, has conceded that everyone in the Australian side misread the pitch in The Oval Test but said they lost the match because of the first-innings collapse. Australia’s decision to overlook Nathan Hauritz and persist with a four-man pace attack hurt them after England’s Graeme Swann exploited a turning pitch to pick up eight wickets.”We would’ve changed the side (from the fourth Test at Headingley) if we’d read the wicket right, and we would’ve played Nathan Hauritz,” Hilditch told reporters in Adelaide a day after the defeat. “But it would be an over-simplification to say that meant we lost the Test match, that’d be incorrect. We lost the Test match because we got 160 in the first innings.”Jamie Cox was the selector on duty, but everybody misread the wicket, from our entire playing group, captain and coach included, and that just happens. To see the hard work that all those players put in, a very important series for everybody, to see it fall apart at The Oval was hard for everybody.”Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland today defended the selection committee, saying it wouldn’t be right to blame them for the defeat. He also ruled out any major changes to the three-member panel, but confirmed that one among those those three positions will be made full-time.Hilditch admitted that it was painful watching his team slide to their second Ashes defeat in four years.”I’m feeling gutted and in some disbelief over the last couple of days,” Hilditch said. “The traditional signs of who’s going to win a Test series are all there and it should have been Australia. We had six of the top seven batsmen, 10 centuries, eight of them Australian, the three leading bowlers in the series were all Australian. Everything indicates that we dominated the Test series.”Looking back at the five-Test series, he said England won because they clinched crucial moments.”We lost the Test series through five hours of cricket. We lost the Test series in the last hour in Cardiff (first Test) when we should have won. I thought at the time it was going to hurt us, which it did. There were two hours of batting at Lord’s in the second Test and maybe even an hour’s batting at The Oval in the first innings, when we really needed to get 400-500 runs and get into a good position.”

Spurs ‘not scared’ by McKennie fee

As per Calciomercato.it, a development has emerged in Tottenham Hotspur’s race to sign Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie.

The Lowdown: Premier League calls?

The 23-year-old has enjoyed a resurgence under Massimiliano Allegri recently after a whirlwind 2021/2022 start for him personally.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

McKennie, now a fixed point in Juve’s starting eleven, was the subject of inconsistent performances at club level and even some off-field international drama with the USA before playing his way back in (SB Nation).

Despite becoming a favourite under Allegri, reports suggest that the former Bundesliga man could still leave Turin as both Spurs and West Ham are linked.

A report by La Gazzetta dello Sport last week even stated that new Lilywhites boss Antonio Conte personally wants to bring him to north London and sees him as the ‘new Vidal’.

In another update, Calciomercato.it have brought a promising claim.

The Latest: Spurs not scared by McKennie price tag…

According to the Italian outlet, Tottenham have already approached to ‘ask for information’ on McKennie as they prepare their move for the midfielder.

As well as this, it is believed that the player’s €30-35 million (£25.1m-£29.3m) asking price ‘does not scare’ Spurs or managing director Fabio Paratici by extension.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Given McKennie’s versatility across midfield and even at centre-half, we believe this may be a deal worth pursuing if Paratici and co truly have no problem paying his asking price.

The youngster, having already amassed an impressive 28-caps for the USA, has been lavished with praise by football’s most iconic names in recent seasons.

Indeed, just last season, Italy legend, World Cup winner and ex-Juve boss Andrea Pirlo called McKennie a ‘rock’ in his midfield, praising the midfield maestro who ‘grits his teeth’ (Goal).

Amid his upturn in form, Tottenham could be wise to pounce whilst the player’s confidence is high and can carry serious momentum over to the Premier League.

His £29.3m maximum estimation is arguably generous given his age and the fact he comes with plenty of sell-on value.

Spurs eye Zlatan-like striker in January

Tottenham Hotspur could be gifted a second shot at signing Sasa Kalajdzic this January after a fresh report emerged this week…

What’s the word?

According to Fussball Transfers, there is a feeling around Stuttgart that they could be forced to sell their leading talisman, despite him nearing a return from injury.

His contract is set to expire in summer 2023 but there have been no concrete talks over an extension, and it’s thought that the right offer would see the Bundesliga outfit accept.

It means the door has seemingly opened for the north London outfit to strike, though it remains to be seen how much the 24-year-old would command, with CIES Football Observatory valuing him at £18m.

Sign him up?

Antonio Conte only has one senior centre-forward at his disposal in Harry Kane and we’ve already seen his struggles this season, having bagged just one goal in the Premier League from 11 appearances.

The 11-time Austria international would be an intriguing alternative to the England captain, not least because he stands at a whopping 6 foot 7 – the same height as former Spurs striker Peter Crouch, to whom Kalajdzic has been likened in the past.

“I have heard a lot of phrases and expressions! I’ve heard a comparison with [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic, Peter Crouch, anything from ‘tall and lanky’ to ‘tall’ and an ‘Ibrahimovic-Machine’! I’ve heard a lot of things,” he told Bundesliga.com.

“When I used to play holding midfield there was a player called Nemanja Matic at Manchester United who was a bit of an idol, he’s also Serbian and I have Serbian roots. I tried to compare myself to him.”

Interestingly, Matic is a player who Conte has managed before. The midfielder played a crucial role during Chelsea’s title-winning campaign in 2016/17.

Despite being so tall, the Austrian has proven to be a very adept and dynamic forward, as revealed by his manager Pellegrino Matarazzo, who said: “He’s a very good footballer. He links up well with his teammates, and communicates very effectively. He’s invaluable.”

Conte has often utilised big centre-forwards in his systems – think Diego Costa and Romelu Lukaku – so he would surely love Fabio Paratici to make a move for the Stuttgart sensation this winter.

Former England swing bowler Martin Saggers has announced his retirement after picking up a serious knee injury in August.Saggers, 37, had his greatest success at Kent, who he joined after three unrewarding seasons at Durham. He moved the ball at a lively pace and soon established himself in the side. In 2002 he was joint top wicket-taker in England (83) and in 2003-04 was drafted into the England squad in Bangladesh as injury cover for Andrew Flintoff. He made his debut in the second Test at Chittagong, played twice more against New Zealand in early 2004, against whom he claimed a wicket with his first ball in home Tests, and then faded from the scene with seven wickets to his name.”I’ve had 11 great seasons [at Kent],” Saggers said. “I’ve realised many of my dreams and it was a pleasure to play for both Kent and England. I played with a number of talented players throughout my career and I would like to thank all of my colleagues, past and present, for making it so much fun. It’s disappointing to have to retire but I leave the playing game with many happy memories and now look forward to my future plans within the game.””It’s always sad when a player comes to the end of a career,” chairman of cricket, Graham Johnson, added. “We owe Martin a great deal, especially during a period when he was our seam attack. Quite rightly, on the basis of this success, he received recognition at International level. Always enthusiastic and positive during his career, he will carry these qualities into his plans for what follows after cricket.”Saggers played 119 first-class matches, taking 415 wickets at 25.33, with his career best 7 for 79 coming for Kent against Durham at Riverside in 2000.

Newcastle: Origi a possible January target

Divock Origi is among the possible targets for Newcastle United when the transfer window opens in just over a month’s time.

That’s according to The Northern Echo’s chief sports writer Scott Wilson, who tweeted that the Magpies are ‘stepping up [their] plans’ for what is shaping up to be a crucial January transfer window – after 12 Premier League games, they find themselves bottom of the table and without a win.

The lowdown

Origi, one of the players to whom they may turn as they look to lift themselves from the mire, has been restricted to just 16 minutes of Premier League football for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool this season.

However the Belgian is seizing opportunities when they come. Across his seven appearances in all competitions (including three in the Champions League) he has been directly involved in five goals, scoring three and setting up two more (via Transfermarkt).

The 26-year-old’s £60,000-per-week contract is up at the end of the season, but it could be extended if the requirements of a performance option are met.

The latest

According to Wilson, Eddie Howe apparently wants to ‘heavily prioritise’ targets who are ‘proven Premier League players’.

Newcastle’s ownership, for their part, are particularly keen on players who are struggling for game-time at their current clubs, hence why Origi is regarded as a potential loan option ahead of January.

The verdict

Origi certainly meets Newcastle’s criteria. He is struggling to dislodge the likes of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane at Anfield, but there’s no real shame in that.

Over the course of his Premier League career, he has a respectable return of one goal every 170 minutes, while Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders even dubbed him ‘one of the world’s best finishers’.

The problem for Newcastle is that Mane and Salah are due to head to the Africa Cup of Nations in January, so the Reds might want to keep Origi around as a much-needed option for their attack. That could certainly complicate the Magpies’ chances of doing a mid-season deal for the Belgian.
