Lee Gregory disappointed for Owls v Lincoln

Sheffield Wednesday picked up their third League One draw in a row this afternoon with a 1-1 stalemate against Lincoln City at Hillsborough.

Wednesday took the lead after 55 minutes with a goal from Dennis Adeniran but couldn’t capitalise on it before Lewis Montsma scored the equaliser for the away side, with Darren Moore’s side dropping another two points.

One Owls player who had very little impact on the game was Lee Gregory, who started the match but was taken off just after the hour mark to be replaced by Callum Paterson.

During his time on the pitch, the 33-year-old failed to even have one shot at goal, lost possession on 15 occasions, completed only seven out of his 11 passes, won just two of his 13 duels and made no crosses or key passes. He had just 25 touches all afternoon, losing the ball once for every 1.6 touches of the ball.

That all earned him a rather disappointing overall match rating of 6.3/10, making him the lowest-rated player on the pitch according to SofaScore, badly letting Moore down and making him a real liability for the team on this occasion.

Furthermore, Yorkshire Live writer Dom Howson’s verdict that the centre-forward “struggled to get into the game” sums up the sort of afternoon he had.

Wednesday signed Gregory during the previous summer transfer window from Championship club Stoke City for an undisclosed fee.

Since then, the striker – who is currently valued at £450k by Transfermarkt – has made 13 appearances for the Owls in League One after their draw against Lincoln, scoring five goals and providing two assists in the process and proving himself to be a decent signing for the Owls.

However, with Gregory also failing to impress in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against Cambridge United in midweek prior to the Lincoln clash, perhaps it is a sign that now is the right time for Moore to take him out of the team for a period until he’s able to get his form back, particularly in front of goal. Otherwise, he could even find himself out of the club altogether if performances like this become the norm.

Mascarenhas puts Hampshire top

A round-up from the latest Friends Provident Trophy matches

Dimitri Mascarenhas lifted Hampshire to the top of Group A as his exceptional figures of 4 for 39 set up an emphatic six-wicket victory over Nottinghamshire at the Rose Bowl. Mascarenhas claimed each of the first three wickets to fall then added Chris Read for a 14-ball duck as Notts slumped to 50 for 6, with Dominic Cork also buzzing the ball around in helpful conditions to finish with 3 for 13. Will Jefferson and Paul Franks put up some decent resistance for the seventh wicket, making 93 and 50 respectively in a stand of 94, but Billy Taylor separated the pair then worked his way through the tail for figures of 3 for 40. In reply, Michael Lumb and John Crawley added 68 for the first wicket to get the chase off to a decent start, and victory was a formality even though Ryan Sidebottom showed some timely form with 2 for 39 in ten overs.Leicestershire’s 19-year-old batsman, James Taylor, produced the second century of his senior career and his first in limited-overs cricket, to propel his team to a hard-earned 18-run victory over Worcestershire at New Road. Taylor struck seven fours and a six in his 109-ball 101, and shared in two sizeable stands with HD Ackerman and Boeta Dippenaar, who both made 63. Leicestershire’s total of 282 for 3 was always going to be challenging, especially when Vikram Solanki fell early to Alex Wyatt for 3, but Steve Davies and Stephen Moore both made half-centuries to keep the chase going. Ben Smith later added 54 in the middle-order, but Worcestershire’s ambitions were derailed by Claude Henderson, who claimed 3 for 44 including two wickets in three balls to prevent any prospect of an even tighter finish.Ian Bell produced a timely reminder of his talents by guiding Warwickshire to a comprehensive six-wicket victory over Middlesex at Edgbaston. Bell, who links up with the Test squad in Durham this evening, made 60 not out from 82 balls, as Warwickshire chased down a disappointing total of 165 with almost 15 overs to spare. The hard work in the run-chase, however, was done by Neil Carter at the top of the order, who belted 56 from 45 balls to put the result beyond doubt. It was a bit of a fall from grace for Middlesex who topped 300 in their previous match against Kent, but this time were unable to get going. One of their centurions from that match, Nick Compton, fell for a third-ball duck, although the other, Eoin Morgan, did manage to top-score once again with 62 from 110 balls. Carter, who enjoyed a fine all-round perform, took 3 for 40 in nine overs.Ashwell Prince made 78 from 97 balls as Lancashire eased to a comfortable six-wicket victory over Northamptonshire at Old Trafford. After winning the toss and bowling first, Lancashire were given early control by Glen Chapple who removed both openers with 35 on the board, before Kyle Hogg had Andrew Hall caught behind for a duck. Nicky Boje responded with a fighting half-century before being run out, whereupon Gary Keedy bagged David Willey for a first-ball duck. Chasing 212, Lancashire lost Tom Smith early, but Prince and Paul Horton added 97 for the second wicket to lay the platform for victory.Danish Kaneria inspired Essex to a crushing seven-wicket victory over Glamorgan at Cardiff with a remarkable haul of 4 for 16 in 10 overs. Ripping his legbreaks from the very start of his spell, and bowling Ryan Watkins with a ball that ballooned over his shoulder and onto the top of the stumps, Kaneria had at one stage reduced Glamorgan to 57 for 7, before Ben Wright restored some order with an unbeaten 40. David Masters was also on fine form with 3 for 21 in eight overs, as Essex were left to chase a modest target of 125. They lost Mark Pettini early, but Varun Chopra and Graham Napier made 37 and 41 respectively, before Matt Walker and Grant Flower sealed the contest with just under half the overs remaining.

Newcastle: Krafth stole the show vs Palace

Newcastle’s winless start to the Premier League season continued as they held Crystal Palace to a 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

Christian Benteke’s goal put Palace in front in London before a stunning overhead kick from Callum Wilson ensured Graeme Jones’ first game in charge did not end in defeat.

The Magpies, unfortunately, remain in the bottom three – in 19th – and are only two points above 20th-placed Norwich, three points off Leeds in 17th.

Whilst Wilson’s sensational goal will take the headlines, another player stole the show with his performance on the pitch – Emil Krafth.

Some Magpies fans may have been surprised to see his name in the starting XI. It was his second start of the Premier League campaign, with the other coming in a 0-0 draw with Burnley back in August.

He fully justified his spot in the team and caught the eye with an impressive display. There was little he could have done to prevent Benteke’s goal in the second half. Javier Manquillo was slow to close down to the ball in from out wide and then the Belgian colossus pinned Ciaran Clark down in the six-yard box and powered a header past Karl Darlow, on the opposite side of the back three to Krafth.

He then played a crucial role in the equaliser as his headed flick-on set up Wilson to acrobatically fire the ball into the top corner. Krafth reacted in the box from a corner to get his head to the ball and it sat perfectly for the ex-Bournemouth hitman to finish.

Along with his assist, Krafth was able to show off the defensive side of his game. Per SofaScore, the Sweden international won 70% (7/10) of his duels on the pitch. He also made a whopping eight clearances, as he produced four tackles, two blocks and one interception. This shows that he was on the ball defensively as he snuffed out a number of Palace attacks to win possession back for his side from the right centre-back position.

SofaScore handed him a rating of 7.7 for his display, the highest on the Newcastle team. So, forget Wilson being the club’s standout performer against Palace… it was Krafth! The 2019 signing grasped his opportunity with both hands and will surely have cemented his place in the side for next weekend’s daunting clash with Chelsea.

Cricinfo staff07-Jun-2009A final decision regarding Pakistan’s rights to host the 2011 World Cup will be taken on June 19, the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt has said. A preliminary conference aimed at reaching an out-of-court settlement to the dispute over shifting matches out of Pakistan will be held in London on June 15.”Now Sharad Pawar [ICC vice-president] will take part in the June 15 meeting through tele-conferencing,” Butt was quoted as saying in the . “However, on June 19 a three-member committee – comprising ICC President David Morgan, me and Pawar – will take a final decision in England.”Presently, I cannot reveal to the media PCB’s stance for the forthcoming meetings as our lawyer has advised us to keep the whole matter confidential,” he said.Pakistan were stripped of their rights to host the 2011 World Cup in the aftermath of the Lahore attacks in March, when gunmen fired at the Sri Lankan team’s bus. The World Cup secretariat, the organising body for the tournament, was subsequently moved from Lahore to Mumbai after which the PCB issued a legal notice to the ICC.

ODI rout in England a blessing in disguise – Arthur

Mickey Arthur has said the heavy defeat to England in the one-day series last year had only made the team stronger

Mickey Arthur, the South Africa coach, has said the heavy defeat to England in the one-day series last year had only made the team stronger and emerge as a world-beating unit. He said the 4-0 defeat – after winning the Test series – forced him and Graeme Smith to rethink their overall composition of their limited-overs side and the benefits are now being felt, with South Africa starting the ongoing ICC World Twenty20 as one of the favourites.”I think that one-day series we had here (in England) after winning the Test series was a blessing in disguise for us,” Arthur said. “It certainly forced myself and Graeme to sit back and do a lot of reflection, deciding on which way we wanted to go, what was going to be our brand going forward to the World Cup in 2011, who were the players we were going to look at and we did. We sat down and we thought long and hard about it.”With the team we had in England, we didn’t have the ability to take pace off the ball. We realised we needed to grow our spin bowling department, we realised we needed to have batters who could bowl spin coupled with out and out pace bowlers.”Though the current Twenty20 squad isn’t markedly different from the one-day team which toured England last year, the big difference is the number of spinners who’ve helped South Africa’s growth. The offspinner Johan Botha – an effective Twenty20 bowler – was elevated to the one-day captaincy to fill Smith’s absence; JP Duminy has been chipping in regularly with his offbreaks and Roelof van der Merwe has been an asset with his left-arm spin and match-winning ability.”I think we’ve got the balance right now. We’ve got seven definite bowling options, three of which are spin bowling options – I include JP Duminy in that because I think he’s that good,” Arthur said. “And we’ve got three guys who can bowl at over 140kph (Dale Steyn, Wayne Parnell and Jacques Kallis).”We also bat down to ten – Wayne Parnell was batting at six for Kent a month back – and I still think as a group we are probably the best fielding side in the world.”Despite the team’s recent success as a Test unit – with Test series wins in England and Australia – a victory in an ICC event has always eluded them. South Africa failed to make the semi-finals of the last World Twenty20 on their own turf and bowed out of the 2003 World Cup in the group stages, among other missed opportunities.”We said a year ago there were three things we really wanted to do as a South African unit – to win a Test series in England, to win a Test series in Australia and to win an ICC trophy event,” Arthur said. “We’ve flattered to deceive in ICC events. We’ve ticked two of the three boxes and we’ve got three opportunities until 2011 to put the other one right so here’s hoping.”
