Farveez Maharoof, the Sri Lanka bowling allrounder, has been ruled out of the two-Test series in Pakistan with a groin injury. Maharoof, who had been overlooked for the first Test currently in progress in Karachi, will fly home and in his place the selectors have called up Nuwan Kulasekara.Maharoof sustained the injury during a practice session before the first Test at Karachi’s National Stadium. “Maharoof is suffering from a groin injury and the doctors have advised him to rest,” a team official told .Sri Lanka’s coach Trevor Bayliss said Kulasekara would join the team before the second Test in Lahore starting March 1.Maharoof, 24, has represented Sri Lanka in 20 Tests and 91 ODIs since his debut in April 2004. After the Test series in Pakistan, Sri Lanka are scheduled to play five ODIs against Zimbabwe in March and then the World Twenty20 in June.Maharoof, however, is contracted to the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL. The second season of the Indian Twenty20 league runs from April 10 to May 24.

Predicted West Ham XI vs Rapid Wien - team, injury news

West Ham will host their first-ever Europa League group stage match at the London Stadium this evening and David Moyes will be looking to build on their recent form.

The Irons kickstarted their quest for glory in Europe with an impressive 2-0 win at Dinamo Zagreb, arguably the toughest of all the teams in their group.

Meanwhile, back in the Premier League, the Hammers secured a last-gasp victory against Leeds United on Saturday afternoon, meaning they have lost just once across all competitions since the start of the 2021/22 campaign.

Moyes has plenty of selection headaches facing him heading into kickoff, especially with a clash against Brentford this weekend, so what sort of side could we see in east London tonight?

Here’s what Football FanCast are predicting…

There could be as many as six changes from the win at Elland Road as the Scotsman balances injuries and rotation.

We may see PSG loanee Alphonse Areola return between the sticks, handing veteran shot-stopper Lukasz Fabianski a rest, whilst there is one enforced change to the backline.

It’s believed that Vladimir Coufal is a doubt for this clash, so he may not be risked, even if he does make the squad and with his usual back-up, Ryan Fredericks also out through injury, Moyes may have to turn to 21-year-old academy graduate Ben Johnson.

He will join Kurt Zouma and Aaron Cresswell, who both remain from Sunday, with Issa Diop coming back in after he was described as a “colossus” for his performance against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup last week.

The 6 foot 4 titan’s involvement also allows Angelo Ogobonna a rest.

Elsewhere, Declan Rice was doing pre-match press duties, which could provide a clue into him starting but he may be joined by Alex Kral, rather than Tomas Soucek as the usual Czech starter needs a break.

Further up the pitch, we could see Manuel Lanzini and Nikola Vlasic return to the starting XI, playing alongside Pablo Fornals and Michail Antonio.

It means there is no place for either of Said Benrahma or Jarrod Bowen, who are likely to start on Sunday against the Bees.

Liverpool eye Barcelona midfielder Gavi

Liverpool currently have a solid selection of midfield options in their squad such as Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones, James Milner, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

However, it seems as though the Merseyside club have their eyes on a new addition for that role.

What’s the news?

It has recently been reported by Spanish media outlet El Nacional (via Liverpool Echo) that Liverpool are apparently interested in signing Barcelona’s 17-year-old midfielder Gavi at some point in the future.

Gavi, who is a product of Barcelona’s youth academy, made his senior debut for the club back in August in a 2-1 La Liga win over Getafe.

Since then, the midfielder has made seven appearances for Ronald Koeman’s side across all competitions this season in which he has played in a number of positions across the pitch such as central-midfield, left-wing, right-wing, left-midfield and attacking midfield, showing just how versatile he is at such a young age.

In addition to making his debut at club level, Gavi recently made his debut for the Spanish national team in their recent 2-1 win over Italy in the semi-final of the UEFA Nations League.

After his performance in the win against Italy, Spain head coach Luis Enrique said Gavi’s performance was “fantastic” and the he is “something exceptional.”

Taking all of this into account, it’s easy to see why Liverpool have been mentioned with a potential move with the young star.

Future Red?

If Liverpool were to sign Gavi at some point in the near future, we feel he could well go onto be a long-term option for the Reds, given his age and perhaps take over from Henderson if he ends up leaving the club when the new four-year contract he signed over the summer runs out in 2025, which could therefore allow Gavi to take a more prominent role in the team should he make the move to Anfield at any point before then.

However, it would be understandable for Barcelona to be reluctant to potentially sell their youth star after only just making his breakthrough in their team.

On the other hand, given the widely reported financial issues at the Spanish club at the moment, there could be a situation where cashing in on a player like Gavi could be the best option for Barcelona if a club such as Liverpool were willing to come in and pay a significant transfer fee for him.

In our view, if Liverpool are interested in signing Gavi, they should probably wait until the next summer transfer window at the earliest before approaching Barcelona so they can have a better idea of the player he can develop into based on what he does throughout the remainder of this season.

Out-of-pocket Fletcher owes Stanford debt of gratitude

West Indies’ opener, Andre Fletcher, has spoken of his lasting gratitude to Allen Stanford, the disgraced former bankroller of West Indian cricket – even though he has lost money since Stanford’s collapse

West Indies’ opener, Andre Fletcher, has spoken of his lasting gratitude to Allen Stanford, the disgraced former bankroller of West Indian cricket – even though the collapse of Stanford’s financial empire has caused Fletcher to lose a significant portion of the US$1million prizemoney that he picked up for his matchwinning role in November’s Super Series in Antigua.Speaking to Cricinfo in the build-up to West Indies’ Twenty20 international against England in Trinidad, Fletcher admitted that approximately US$100,000 of his winnings have disappeared after he accepted investment advice from Stanford’s people in the wake of the tournament. But nevertheless, he still spoke fondly of the man who changed his life.”He did a lot for me, and I’m very grateful,” said Fletcher. “After all that has happened to him he is still a very good person, because if it wasn’t for him, maybe I would not have been as well known as I am now. He did a lot for West Indies cricket, but life still goes on from here. I wish him all the best for whatever is to come, and maybe one day, after all this, he can continue with his tournament.”Never mind the million-dollar match, it was Stanford’s regional 20/20 tournament, first contested in 2006, that catapulted Fletcher from virtual obscurity after a string of big-hitting performances for his native Grenada. To date he has played just four ODIs and a solitary Twenty20 international, all against Australia in 2008, but having helped seal the Stanford Superstars’ ten-wicket victory over England with an unbeaten 32 from 31 balls, he is sure to start in Sunday’s match at Port-of-Spain.”I am very happy to get back to the West Indies team, and once I get out there and play, I will do my best,” he said. “My form is still there from that game, I’ve been playing some regional games and scoring heavily. That’s not to say there won’t be any form of nervousness, but I just have to play my natural game.”England’s captain, Andrew Strauss, certainly knows what that natural game involves. He was playing for Middlesex prior to his recall to the ODI squad when Fletcher flogged a brilliant 90 not out from 66 balls in the Superstars’ final warm-up fixture. That innings left him in the perfect frame of mind for when, two days later, he and his captain Chris Gayle strode out needing a meagre 100 for victory, and wrapped up the match with a stunning 44 balls to spare.”It was a very great feeling, knowing that whoever won would get a million, and whoever lost would get nothing,” he recalled. “We knew the total was not a lot, so Chris and I said we would play our natural game, and that’s what we did. We went out there to do our best, and if we did our best the money would come. We were not focusing much on the money, just on cricket how it should be played. Looking at the crowd, there was a little form of anxiety, but we got over it and delivered.”Gayle, unfortunately, will play no part in Sunday’s Twenty20 after tearing his hamstring during his century in last week’s fifth Test, but Fletcher insists he will feel no added pressure in his captain’s absence. “I helped in the team victory, and Chris and Darren Sammy played a big part also, but just knowing that I helped bring the team home brings a lot of confidence in me,” he said. “It’s hard to have Chris out of the team, but that’ll be no form of setback. We still have a fairly strong team, Dwayne Bravo is back, and we’re just waiting for the day to arrive.”Fletcher believes he will actively thrive on the atmosphere at Port-of-Spain on Sunday. “From the start of the Stanford tournament in 2006 there were big crowds, and I’m the type of player who actually performs better with big crowds, not little crowds,” he said. “There won’t be any added pressure on me to go and bat when a game like this is on show, I’m just looking forward to delivering my goods. There may not be a million dollars at stake this time, but once we win it will feel like a million dollars!”Despite his stratospheric rise in Twenty20 cricket, Fletcher does not see his future exclusively in the shortest form of the game. He has been a regular fixture in the Windwards Islands’ regional four-day campaign this season, scoring three fifties in six matches, and he has his sights set on becoming Grenada’s fourth Test cricketer, after Junior Murray, Rawl Lewis and his current team-mate, Devon Smith.”I am very happy knowing that our guys won the Wisden Trophy, and coming into the squad I can see those guys are really happy, and so I just have to come in and gel with them, and show my confidence,” he said. “Just to be in the Twenty20 team now is a great feeling, but I have what it takes to be on the Test team also. I am doing well in the longer version, and the people back home are behind me, so hopefully they’ll one day give me a call so I can prove myself.”

Bellerive to have lights by next season

Day-night matches will be held at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval next summer after the announcement that the venue will have floodlights in time for the 2009-10 season

Cricinfo staff03-Apr-2009

Bellerive Oval should have floodlights within six months•Tasmanian Cricket Association

Day-night matches will be held at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval next summer after the announcement that the venue will have floodlights in time for the 2009-10 season. The Tasmanian Cricket Association was told last year it risked losing future one-day international fixtures unless Bellerive became a day-night option and the Tasmanian government has stepped in to ensure that Hobart would remain an ODI venue. The government will fund the lights, which the TCA expects to be fully operational by the end of October. Bellerive Oval typically hosts one or two one-day internationals per summer and next year will be lining up to hold a day-night game between Australia and either Pakistan or West Indies. In addition to ensuring that ODIs stay at Bellerive, the TCA is confident the lights will attract bigger crowds to domestic one-dayers in Tasmania. Selected FR Cup games are telecast on pay TV in Australia but the broadcasters prefer to show day-night matches, which has meant the Tigers’ home games haven’t received as much exposure as fixtures in the other states.”It’ll certainly have an impact at domestic level,” Tony Harrison, the TCA chairman, said. “Our ODI this summer was sold out anyway and with lights we’ll continue to have sellouts, and that’s another issue, we’ll need to look at the capacity of the ground.”At domestic level it will have a fantastic impact on crowds. It will also allow us to get into the Wednesday night domestic one-day market for television.”Harrison said there had been concerns raised from a small number of local residents about the effect of the light towers but overall he had been heartened by the community support. Retractable towers are a possibility and would help ease some of the resident concerns, although the Clarence City Council still needs to approve that option based on engineering advice.

Rangers fans on Stewart comments

Lots of Glasgow Rangers fans have been left raging as some comments emerged from Michael Stewart.

The Ibrox faithful tweeted a video advertising their new 150th anniversary kit with the iconic ‘Four Lads Had a Dream’ chant in the background, representing how far the club have come.

Former Scotland international Stewart has since criticised the use of the song, claiming that it is ‘offensive to many’, and citing that some Light Blues supporters were charged for singing it last month.

There is some controversy surrounding the song given that it is used in another form in the offensive ‘Famine Song’ chant, but the club are clearly using it to highlight their legacy and nothing more.

Nonetheless, it seems as if Stewart has wound up a lot of the Teddy Bears fanbase after making the comments.

Rangers fans on Stewart comments

These Gers were left fuming as the comments emerged on Twitter, with one RFC supporter even going as far as call Stewart an ‘absolute balloon’:

“STOP. Just stop demonising my club and my fellow fans. My children love “Four Lads Had A Dream” and wouldn’t have a clue about any links to alternate lyrics. This is a Rangers song, about the history of Rangers, on a day we released a historical Rangers kit. It is that simple.”

“Please Michael, actually listen for once and stop being mental. This is the 4 Lads kit, so we played the tune of 4 Lads Had A Dream in the promo video. Let me know if there’s any problems understanding that.”

“Deary me Michael, do you just roam about looking to be offended by anything that is produced by RFC, or by anything that doesn’t sit with your SNP narrative? Take a day off mate, relax.”

“Why haven’t you (or anyone else who has taken part in today’s coordinated faux-outrage) mentioned this before? It’s sung by Rangers fans every week. People can see through this pitiful attempt to stoke controversy where it does not exist.”
