Bowyer must unleash Aneke vs Fulham

After comfortably guiding his Birmingham City side to survival last season, and following an impressive summer transfer window, Lee Bowyer has managed to maintain the Blues’ fine form into the club’s 2021/22 Championship campaign – winning two, drawing one and losing one of their opening four league fixtures.

The 44-year-old has also guided his team through to the Carabao Cup second round, defeating Colchester United 1-0 in the first round two weeks ago, and the Blues face Fulham in that competition on Tuesday night.

With the competition perhaps not being a priority for Bowyer during a season in which the manager will undoubtedly be prioritising the club’s league campaign, the fixture will allow him to rotate his side in order to take a look at a couple of younger talents, as well as his first-team fringe players.

One such player who falls into the latter category is Chuks Aneke, the 28-year-old summer signing from Bowyer’s former employers Charlton Athletic.

Indeed, game-time has been limited for the £360k-rated forward at St Andrew’s so far this season, having made three substitute appearances in the Championship, over which he has scored one goal and averaged just 24 minutes on the pitch per game.

However, Aneke demonstrated over his 38 League One appearances for the Addicks last term that he could well deserve a shot from the off against Fulham, with the £5.4k-per-week marksman scoring 15 goals, providing two assists and creating three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking 2.3 shots and making 0.6 key passes per match.

These returns saw the man who Bowyer himself dubbed an “immense” talent earn a highly impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.03, ranking him as Charlton’s fifth-best performer in the third tier last season.

As such, it would certainly appear that, when he is given the opportunity, the forward can bring considerable returns to his club.

With not much at stake in a cup clash with the Championship table-toppers, it would seem highly advisable for Bowyer to give Aneke a chance from the off. His presence in and around the box could well terrify the Cottagers’ backline, as well as affording the manager a chance to see what the 28-year-old is capable of producing against a challenging opponent.

Pakistan chief relieved at Champions Trophy decision

Pakistan’s recently instated chairman, Ijaz Butt, has wholeheartedly welcomed the news that the Champions Trophy will finally go ahead in 2009

Cricinfo staff16-Oct-2008Pakistan’s recently instated chairman, Ijaz Butt, has wholeheartedly welcomed the news that the Champions Trophy will finally go ahead in 2009.Yesterday, the ICC rescheduled the tournament to take place next September, after it was abandoned earlier this year due to security concerns over the country’s political stability.”Of course, it’s a big relief,” Butt told AFP from Dubai where heattended the ICC’s board meeting. “Previously there was some opposition onholding this event in Pakistan but I am happy that it was a consensusdecision.”The location of the event has yet to be finalised by the ICC, and a decision will be made after India’s tour of the country early next year, in which Pakistan host them for three Tests, five one-dayers and a Twenty20.”Pakistan government is taking care of improving security and every stepwill be taken to hold the India series in a peaceful manner,” Butt said, “because thatwill allay fears of other countries.”Pakistan has struggled to attract touring teams for a number of years owing to their concerns over its security. Two home series, against Australia and West Indies, were relocated in the aftermath of the 9/11 bombings in America in 2001, and Australia also postponed their full tour of Pakistan this year. They have agreed to split the tour into two trips, with five ODIs scheduled for March 2009 and a three-Test series in 2010.

United dealt Scott McTominay injury blow

Manchester United have been dealt a major injury blow ahead of their upcoming Premier League fixture.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by the Manchester United website, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that the 24-year-old midfielder will miss the clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, as the Scotland international has undergone surgery on his groin.

The United manager said: “Scott has undergone surgery for an ongoing groin injury that was causing significant pain when playing. Having tried all other treatment options in pre-season, surgery was deemed necessary to resolve the issue. We hope to have him back soon.”

Solskjaer will be gutted

Considering just how important a player McTominay has become in the United first team in recent seasons, the fact that the Red Devils will be without the services of the midfielder for what is sure to be a difficult trip to Molineux on Sunday will undoubtedly have left Solskjaer gutted.

Indeed, the versatile £31.5m-rated man’s form for United last season illustrates his importance to the side, with the 24-year-old scoring four goals, registering one assist and creating three big chances over his 32 Premier League appearances, as well as making an average of 0.9 interceptions, 1.6 tackles, 1.3 clearances and winning 5.2 duels per game.

These returns saw the £20k-per-week Scot earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.08, ranking him as Solskjaer’s fifth-best performer in the top flight of English football last season.

As such, McTominay’s importance in the United side is clear for all to see, with his absence from the first team – the predicted length of which, at present, has not been revealed by the club – undoubtedly coming as a huge blow to the Norwegian manager, who will have to find a way to work around the midfielder’s absence for the trip to Wolves on Sunday.

Afinal, o ataque eficiente novamente funcionou.

Man City in pole position to sign Haaland

There was disappointment for Manchester City in the recent transfer window but reports are now suggesting that they are in pole position to sign Erling Haaland next summer, and the Norwegian would surely be an incredible addition at the Etihad Stadium.

What’s the word?

According to Sport Bild (via Manchester Evening News), City are the current favourites to sign the 21-year-old forward next summer when the release clause in his contract at Borussia Dortmund will reportedly activate.

It seemed clear that City would bring in a world-class striker following the departure of Sergio Aguero at the end of last season but they ultimately failed in their attempts to bring Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo to the Etihad, with 21-year-old Ferran Torres looking like the main striker option for Pep Guardiola until January at least.

Would Haaland be a good signing?

Haaland has truly established himself as one of the best youngsters in world football after his impressive displays with RB Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund.

The powerful frontman contributed 29 goals and seven assists in just 27 games for the Austrian side before earning a move to Dortmund in January 2020, where his form in front of goal has also been exceptional, with 63 goals and 18 assists to his name in 64 appearances thus far.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

Despite being 6 foot 4, Haaland has unbelievable speed and is a constant threat for defenders in the box, which is something you feel City lacked in the latter stages of last season when they struggled to get over the line in the FA Cup and Champions League.

Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann was full of praise for Haaland earlier this year, saying: “Of course, he is an exceptional striker – this is why we wanted him, too. Dortmund got him.

“I think he just scored 25 goals in 25 Bundesliga games, something like that. This is truly extraordinary. Unbelievable stats.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936”]

If City can sign Haaland next year, then you’d feel they will have secured a world-class striker who is capable of playing for another decade at least. He would arguably be a much better long-term option than Kane or Ronaldo, and therefore, after a difficult summer transfer window, sporting director Txiki Begiristain would be redeeming himself by bringing Haaland to the Etihad.

Warne hopes Ponting learns from mistakes

Shane Warne believes Ricky Ponting could learn something from Allan Border and Ian Chappell, two of the former captains who criticised Ponting over his tactics in the fourth Test in Nagpur

Shane Warne believes Ricky Ponting could learn something from Allan Border and Ian Chappell, two of the former captains who criticised Ponting over his tactics in the fourth Test in Nagpur. But Warne said although Ponting made some bad decisions it was important he was not hung out to dry.”His tactics surprised me – and everyone else – because he is naturally an attacker,” Warne wrote in his column in the . “The reason he is under pressure is that it looked like he put himself in front of the team, and that just isn’t Punter. Having played with him for a long time, he was one of the guys that put the team first – always.”If it meant throwing his wicket away in the chase for quick runs, he would do that. And there have been previous captains who would not do that. I just think he got it wrong this time and I’m sure he will be a better captain for the experience.”Ponting’s decision to use part-time slow bowlers instead of his main strikers after tea on the fourth day against India drew severe criticism from a wide range of cricketing names. Ponting was particularly disappointed with the harsh words from Border and Chappell but Warne said the two men could have something to offer.”Hopefully Ricky understands where everyone’s criticism is coming from, takes it on board and does not wipe people,” Warne said. “I’m sure if he thinks it through, he could do worse than ask Ian Chappell or Allan Border out for dinner and chat about it. He might just pick up something.”Ian Chappell was the biggest influence on my cricketing career and I learnt a lot about captaincy, tactics and the game off him. Border taught me what it meant to play for Australia and showed me what toughness was. He was brilliant and he never gave up.”Warne said it was not so much the fact that Australia lost the series 2-0 but the way the team was defeated that was a concern for some of the ex-players. He said the squad appeared to lack spark, although he felt the players would lift immediately for next week’s first Test against New Zealand.Ponting also found support from his former team-mate Justin Langer, who described Ponting as one of the “most selfless people and captains I have ever played with”. Langer said the poor over rate was an issue the entire squad needed to address and it was unfortunate that Ponting was being landed with the blame.”Anyone who suggests Ricky Ponting had any ulterior motives has absolute rocks in their head and I include in that former legends of the game who have said it because they are not reading the situation properly,” Langer told the . “To point the finger at the captain, who already has a dozen other things going on, is unfair and it’s insanity.”Adam Gilchrist, who led Australia to their series win in India in 2004-05, declined to pass judgment on Ponting’s tactics but he said there were several others in the touring party who would have contributed to the decision. “There’s a coach [Tim Nielsen] and a vice-captain [Michael Clarke], Matty Hayden is an integral part of that team, and they would have all sat and discussed it,” Gilchrist said on radio. “Ultimately it all comes down to Ricky.”

As atividades serão no CT do Vitória.
