McGrath leads Yorkshire to victory

A magnificent attacking innings of 72 not out by Anthony McGrath was instrumental in leading Yorkshire to an 11-run victory against Derbyshire

John Ward at Chesterfield15-Jun-2008
ScorecardA magnificent unbeaten 72 by Anthony McGrath was instrumental in leading Yorkshire to an 11-run victory against Derbyshire at the picturesque Queen’s Park ground in Chesterfield. The home side were able to match Yorkshire most of the way, but in the end their middle order was not quite up to the task.Yorkshire batted in front of a crowd numbering almost five thousand, many from the Sheffield area. The pitch was slow, and Andrew Gale found a couple of short deliveries, the first two of the match, from Charl Langeveldt ideal for cutting for two and four. The unfortunate Craig White failed to score, having his off bail clipped as he drove at Langeveldt. Gale made a brisk 25, a mixture of timed, mistimed and missed strokes, but the main interest was naturally in the form of Michael Vaughan. The England captain began carefully without becoming bogged down, and at one stage swatted a six over long leg off a bouncer from Rikki Clarke. He never looked too comfortable, though, and at 31 flicked a catch to the square-leg boundary. After 10 overs 63 for 2 was perhaps a little below par, but the rest of the innings was dominated by that superb innings from McGrath. His favourite cover drives scarcely got an airing as he concentrated on powerful hitting straight down the ground, being especially hard on offspinner Jake Needham, whose two overs cost 34 runs. McGrath finished in a blaze of glory, with three fours and six sixes in his best Twenty20 innings. Thanks to him, Yorkshire’s total of 169 was considerably higher than had looked likely. Clarke took two wickets, but his overs cost 32.Vaughan did not field, which expectedly caused some speculation; it was reported that he had a neck spasm. After a quiet start, Greg Smith aspired to play the McGrath role, going for his powerful pulls and drives. He ran to his 50 off 33 balls, in the course of taking 14 off an over from McGrath. He looked ready to take the match away from Yorkshire, but then – as Jacques Rudolph had done in Yorkshire’s innings – he backed up too eagerly at the non-striker’s end for a hit into the field and was very smartly run out, for 68.This was the turning point. Derbyshire had been ahead of Yorkshire almost all the way through their innings, but now they began to struggle. James Pipe briefly tried on the mantle of Smith, but was out for 17 off nine balls, and the later batsmen began to fall in a flurry of flustered strokes. When 42 were needed off the final three overs, with four wickets in hand, the end was in sight. Richard Pyrah, conceding only 18 runs off his four overs, did an unsung but vital job.White had the unusual experience of taking a wicket with his only ball in the middle of an innings: spinner David Wainwright had to leave the field with a hand injury, trying to stop a hard drive off his own bowling, and White, bowling a single delivery to complete the over, induced Wavell Hinds (12) to sky a catch to deep square-leg.

ICC's 2009 conference to be held at Lord's

The ICC’s annual conference in 2009 will be held at Lord’s, David Morgan, the ICC president, has confirmed

David Morgan: “It is perfect timing as it will allow Lord’s, the ICC’s home for the first 96 years of its existence, to play a central role in our organisation’s centenary celebrations, as 2009 is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the ICC” © AFP
The ICC’s annual conference in 2009 will be held at Lord’s, David Morgan, the ICC president, has confirmed. Lord’s had held the yearly conference since the first in 1909, but the meeting this year was hosted in Dubai, the first time it had been moved from the body’s former London headquarters. The shift to Dubai, where the ICC headquarters is located, came after it emerged that officials from Zimbabwe may not be granted visas by the British government due to the prevailing political situation in that country. But it’s believed the conference will be held at Lord’s next year even if visas are not granted to Zimbabwe officials, as the decision to host the meeting in England was unanimously endorsed by the ICC board, which includes Peter Chingoka, the president of Zimbabwe Cricket.”It is perfect timing as it will allow Lord’s, the ICC’s home for the first 96 years of its existence, to play a central role in our organisation’s centenary celebrations, as 2009 is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the ICC,” Morgan said. “That central role will involve not only the hosting of our biggest ever annual conference week, with all 60 Affiliate Members invited for the first time alongside the Associate and Full Members, but also the staging of matches in the ICC World Twenty 2009, including the finals of both the men’s and women’s events on 21 June.”The ICC’s centenary will be a time to look back at the legends who have shaped the game over the previous 100 years,” he said. “It will also provide an opportunity to look forward and celebrate the thousands of volunteers who sustain the game’s grassroots and, at the same time, the ICC will use the year to highlight the special spirit of cricket on and off the field of play.”Looking ahead to his two years as ICC president, Morgan said he would spend much of the next year meeting the ICC’s members – their officials and their stakeholders. “We are a members’ organisation and so we need to know what type of ICC our members want.”Do they want a toothless tiger that is only useful to blame for any failings when things go wrong? Or do they want a strong governing body invested with the power to run, and make decisions based on the best interests of, the game, and a body they can trust to do just that?”Haroon Lorgat [the ICC’s new chief executive officer] and I will travel to Full Members, Associates and Affiliates over the next 12 months to seek some answers,” he said. “But we also want it to be a two-way street. We want to meet boards and key stakeholders including players, ex-players, media, sponsors, even governments.”We want those stakeholders to know what the ICC does and to ask if we can do anything differently or better. And, at the same time, we will ask what they can do for the ICC.”By this time next year, when I report back to the ICC’s annual conference, we should have a better idea of how we can help our members – and how our members can help the ICC to ensure cricket remains a strong sport, growing stronger.”

Sheffield United: Aaron Ramsdale talks break down

Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale’s move to join Premier League giants Arsenal has broken down, as reported by the Express.

The Lowdown: Ramsdale looked set for Arsenal as he entered advanced talks over exit

Looking to add to their depth in the goalkeeping department, Arsenal were believed to be close to agreeing a deal for England international Ramsdale for an up-front fee of around £24 million rising to £30 million [Football London].

His homegrown status was said to be an important factor in the prospective deal, as well as providing a competent option to compete with the underperforming Bernd Leno for the number one jersey.

However, the 23-year-old ace now looks set to stay at Bramall Lane for the time being following recent developments.

The Latest: Ramsdale move collapses after breakdown in discussions

Now, it seems no such switch will materialise. Despite player and club engaging in positive discussions, the sides failed to agree a fee for the ex-Bournemouth stopper [Express].

Any notion of Ramsdale moving to the Emirates Stadium this summer looks to now be dead and buried, provoking deep disappointment on his behalf.

The Blades will now keep hold of their top asset, with Arsenal set to move on to a host of other options.

The Verdict: Ramsdale exit would’ve provoked conflicting emotions amongst the Blades support

In 2020/21, Ramsdale registered six clean sheets in 42 appearances within all competitions [Transfermarkt]. Furthermore, he impressed with his distribution across the piece, completing a commendable 281 accurate long balls last year [Premier League].

Once labelled as ‘incredible’ by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, this latest development may stir mixed emotions at Bramall Lane.

On one hand, losing a talented young stopper so early in a pivotal season would have come as a bitter blow to the Blades’ promotion aspirations.

Conversely, being able to recoup a sizeable amount of money for the 6 foot 2 ace may have gifted boss Slavisa Jokanović with a real opportunity to re-invest in key targets.

In other news, Sheffield United could be set for another prospective departure.

Durham sense victory after 23 wickets fall

A round-up from the latest Championship matches as 23 wickets tumble at Chester-le-Street, Adil Rashid bags a career-best haul and Simon Jones is again in the wickets

Cricinfo staff07-Aug-2008Division OneAn extraordinary match took shape at Chester-le-Street as 23 wickets crashed on the second day – after 15 yesterday – with Kent facing defeat on 116 for 8 chasing 177 against Durham. Only bad light prevented a two-day finish and it had already been decided to convene an ECB pitch panel after the first-day tumble of wickets. They soon announced no action, but there has been torrential rain in recent days and the surface provided plenty of assistance throughout. Kent were humbled for 78 in their first innings before fighting back to remove Durham for 108 second time around. However, after adjusting their batting order and reaching 96 for 3 Kent lost five for 20 and it will be down to Martin van Jaarsveld to try and rescue the run chase. He is one of only two batsmen to pass 28 in the match following Ryan McLaren’s 44 off 61 balls after Kent’s second innings fell to 36 for 3. But Mark Davies continued a remarkable match, backing up his 5 for 21 in the first innings with four more wickets to leave Durham sensing victory. His haul had given Durham a crucial lead of 68, however the home side’s batting crumbled again against Robbie Joesph, who took a career-best 6 for 32. Geraint Jones took six catches, but Kent’s target of 177 would be the biggest total of the match. It looks a long way off.Adil Rashid took a career-best 7 for 107 as Hampshire and Yorkshire ended all-square on first innings at The Rose Bowl. There has been talk that Rashid has regressed as a bowler since he burst on the scene a couple of seasons ago, so this was a timely haul. Hampshire’s top four all made starts but failed to convert into something more substantial as Rashid began chipping away. On a slow pitch Rashid found big turn and at one stage was on a hat-trick after having Michael Lumb caught at silly point, then trapping Chris Benham by one which stayed low. Nic Pothas kept out the hat-trick ball but, he too, soon fell to Rashid. Only a last-wicket stand of 38 between David Balcombe and James Tomlinson allowed the home side to draw level. Tomlinson earlier played his part in wrapping up Yorkshire’s innings to end with 5 for 53. Jacques Rudolph was caught behind off Chris Tremlett for 89.Justin Langer and Marcus Trescothick brought Somerset right back into their match against Nottinghamshire at Taunton with an unbeaten opening stand of 114, more than the whole Somerset first innings. The second day was restricted to 45 overs by rain, but the game continued to progress as the visitors managed a lead of 124 with Chris Read hitting 74. Read put on 37 for the last wicket with Charlie Shreck, who contributed just 2 during a 53-minute stay. Langer and Trescothick played positively as they aimed to wipe off the deficit and Nottinghamshire’s bowlers found life much tougher.Click here for John Ward’s report of Lancashire against Sussex at Old TraffordDivision TwoDerbyshire fought hard to stay in contention against Worcestershire after Graeme Hick’s first-day onslaught at New Road, and are just 23 runs away from saving the follow-on, but Simon Jones kept the home side in control. Paul Borrington’s Championship best of 85 off 249 balls set a defiant tone, although he was dropped on 40 at slip shortly after a painful blow on the elbow. Greg Smith provided the other major contribution with a more aggressive 88. However, an incisive spell from Jones made crucial inroads as he removed both leading scorers, and Rikki Clarke for a second-ball duck, in the space of 10 balls. All three were caught behind by Steven Davies and even if Worcestershire can’t enforce the follow-on they are well-placed for a handsome lead.Steve Kirby’s four wickets have put Gloucestershire in control against Leicestershire at Cheltenham and given them hope of registering their first Championship win since beating the same opponents nearly a year ago. Leicestershire were in real trouble at 95 for 5 after HD Ackerman drove loosely at David Brown to give Steven Snell one of his five catches. The follow-on was looming, but a stand of 63 between the on-loan Tom Smith and Josh Cobb at least erased that problem. Gloucestershire suffered their own batting problems during the first session, falling from 271 for 5 to 315 all out. It meant eight wickets had gone for 87 after they’d been 228 for 2 on the first day. Jim Allenby and Dillon du Preez both ended with four wickets.Poor weather meant just 26.4 overs were possible at Colwyn Bay as Middlesex reached 58 for 2 in reply to Glamorgan’s 262. Jamie Dalrymple added three runs to finish on 106 as Alan Richardson ended with three wickets. The home side’s bowlers made early inroads with a wicket apiece for Adam Shantry and Richard Grant, who claimed the key scalp of Owais Shah, before the weather closed in.1st dayConsistent contributions from the Northamptonshire top order lifted them to a promising 292 for 5 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston. David Sales was the only one of the top five not to get a foothold on an innings, but the disappointment will be that no one went beyond Rob White’s 73. That was mainly due to the efforts of Ian Salisbury, who claimed four wickets to prevent Northamptonshire running away. Introduced as the sixth bowler, Salisbury broke through the opening stand of 96 when Niall O’Brien picked out deep midwicket shortly before lunch and he was soon followed by Stephen Peters, beaten by the turn as he came down the pitch. White, though, played positively and hit nine fours and three sixes until he top-edged a sweep. Rikki Wessels, who cracked a rapid half-century in the previous day’s Pro40, also chipped along at a fair rate but he was caught off top-edged pull for 61.

Aston Villa: Fans react to coaching staff update

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith may prioritise trying to bring in a coach who has worked in Europe, as reported by The Daily Mail’s Tom Collomosse on Twitter.

Recently suffering from the departures of both John Terry and Richard O’Kelly from the coaching staff, there is a void at Villa which will urgently need to be filled as we embark on the new campaign.

Now, the former Brentford manager looks set to start making tracks in regard to filling the role. Speaking to his Twitter following, Daily Mail journalist Collomosse stated:

“Would expect Smith to add to his #avfc coaching staff after departures of Terry and O’Kelly. Perhaps an innovative appt – someone who has worked in other leagues, different cultures – rather than someone steeped in UK game”.

Taking a step away from their usual approach, this news is bound to create a sense of intrigue within the next few weeks at Villa Park.

In light of this news, loads of Aston Villa diehards took to social media to offer up their opinions on the new coaching pursuit.

Aston Villa FC fans react:

Replying to popular Aston Villa fan outlet villareport, here is what some fans had to say about the situation:

Ashok Mankad dies aged 61

Ashok Mankad, the former Indian batsman, died in his sleep early on Friday morning in Mumbai. A Mumbai stalwart, Mankad’s death came as a shock as he was suffering from no reported ailments. He was 61.Even though he never could reach the heights that his father, Vinoo, attained, Mankad possessed a clever cricketing brain which he would utilise later in his career as a leader of various teams, including Mumbai, to script the downfall of their opponents. As a batsman, Mankad’s career was staggered across a decade, where he played as high as an opener to as low as a No. 8, but he failed to establish himself and only played 22 Tests, between 1969 and 1978, scoring 991 runs. He made an impact against Bill Lawry’s Australians in his debut season in 1969-70, compiling four half-centuries. His 97 in the third Test in New Delhi, also his highest Test score, helped India square the series 1-1. However, he managed only two more fifties in what turned out to be an unfulfilled Test career. He retired from first-class cricket in 1982-83, compiling 12980 runs at an impressive average of 50.90. He scored 44 in his only ODI, against England at The Oval.”Indian cricket lost one of its stalwarts when Ashok Mankad passed away earlier today,” Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary, said. “He was a gifted batsman, an outstanding captain, and a respected cricket guru. An individual who dedicated his life to the sport, ‘Kaka’ will be missed by every single follower of cricket in this country.””I was shocked to hear the sad news of the demise of Ashok Mankad, former Test cricketer,” Sharad Pawar, the BCCI president, said. “In the passing away of Ashok Mankad, the cricketing fraternity has lost a great friend, philosopher and guide.”Vasu Paranjpe, another Mumbai legend and Mankad’s contemporary, thought Mankad never did “justice to his batting career”. But Paranjpe had no doubt about Mankad’s leadership skills.”He was one of the best captains Mumbai had,” Paranjpe said. “He was a clever player and shrewd leader.”Mankad’s Ranji Trophy acheivementsMankad scored 6619 runs (at 76.08), making him the 12th highest scorer in the tournamentA haul of 22 hundreds put him seventh on the list of most century-makersHe led Mumbai to victory in two consecutive seasons, 1974-75 and 1975-76Another highlight of his career was his 265 against Delhi in the 1980-81 finalHe also coached the Mumbai side to the title in 1999-2000Mankad’s legend as a captain was first established at Mafatlal’s in Mumbai’s premier corporate tournament where he led the likes of former India players Eknath Solkar and Brijesh Patel before captaining Mumbai. Here he worked out strategies in company of Sunil Gavaskar and Dilip Vengsarkar to carry forward Mumbai’s supremacy on the domestic front. After his playing career, Mankad quickly moved to coaching. He was manager of the Indian team in 1982, at a time when the post involved a coaching element, though he was not in the reckoning when India moved into the era of full-time coaches. At the domestic level, Mankad coached Madhya Pradesh, Railways and Mumbai with Baroda being his last assignment. Mankad coached Mumbai to a Ranji Trophy title in 2000 and came close once again with Baroda in 2006-07. The hosts had Mumbai reeling at 0 for 5 in the semi-finals but failed to drive home the advantage and eventually lost the match.Mankad is survived by his wife Nirupama, and two sons, Mihir and Harsh.
