Love replaces Law

Martin Love will lead Queensland for the first time tomorrow with regular Bulls captain Stuart Law ruled out by a hand injury which could cost him a Pura Cup final start.

Vera Devai12-Mar-2002Martin Love will lead Queensland for the first time tomorrow with regular Bulls captain Stuart Law ruled out by a hand injury which could cost him a Pura Cup final start.Law, who captained the Bulls side to its first Sheffield Shield title in 1994-95 and also to win the last two Pura Cups, today withdrew from the match against Victoria at the Gabba.Law, who made his comeback from a broken knuckle as the Bulls took first innings points over NSW earlier this month, suffered a heavy blow on the same handwhile fielding at the weekend. He attempted to bat today but was ruled out, with Clinton Perren returned to the Bulls line-up in his place.Queensland, already without internationals Matthew Hayden, Jimmy Maher, Andy Bichel and Nathan Hauritz, now faces the prospect of losing Law long-term witha home Cup final next week in store.Coach Bennett King said Law’s future was uncertain until the full extent of his injuries were known.Queensland Cricket today confirmed Love would take over the captaincy in Law’s absence.Taking on the role for the first time, Love would become Queensland’s 47th first-class cricket captain.”Obviously it will be a great honour to captain Queensland but I won’t be doing anything radically different in terms of the team,” Love said.Love, who captained the Prime Minister’s XI last week against the ATSIC Chairman’s XI, will shoulder the additional burden of leading the Bulls’ rookie batting line-up in the absence of the Pura Cup’s leading scorer Maher. But the Bulls, who are chasing their third consecutive Pura Cup win, could cope with the dramatic reshuffle, King said.”We’ve had players coming in and out of the side all year through injuries or selections,” King said.”The resilience of the Bulls has been the ability to cope with change.”The Bulls will face a Bushrangers side aiming to make amends for its last result, an embarrassing 37-run defeat to the Western Warriors in which the Bushrangers were bowled out for 98 in the second innings.Queensland only needs first innings points to ensure it makes and hosts the final. But an outright defeat for the Bulls coupled with outright wins for Tasmania and WA could result in Queensland missing the Cup decider.Squads:Queensland: Brendan Nash, Daniel Payne, Martin Love (capt), Clinton Perren, Andrew Symonds, Lee Carseldine, Wade Seccombe, Ashley Noffke, MichaelKasprowicz, Joe Dawes, Scott Brant, Matthew Anderson (12th man to be named).Victoria: Matthew Elliott (capt), Matthew Mott, Brad Hodge, Jon Moss, Nick Jewell, Cameron White, Darren Berry, Andrew MacDonald, Mathew Inness, Will Carr,Mick Lewis, Bryce McGain (12th man to be named).

Wolves interested in signing Amadou Diawara

Bruno Lage has been in the Wolves hotseat for a few weeks now but he’s yet to conclude any transfer business.

The Old Gold may have to deal with potential departures before they welcome any new incomings, with Adama Traore and Ruben Neves reportedly both up for sale.

What’s the word?

If the Portugal midfielder does leave the club, they’ll need to find a replacement in the middle of the park.

Wolves already have a number of defensive midfielders at their disposal but they could land a big upgrade in Roma’s Amadou Diawara. According to reports from Italy this week, the Old Gold have submitted a bid to sign the holding player.

Valued at €30m (£27m) this time last year, it’s unknown what sum of money they submitted for his services.

Unfortunately, it looks as though Diawara has rejected Wolves’ proposal. That’s despite the idea of Granit Xhaka joining the Italian club from Arsenal this summer.

It remains to be seen whether Wolves make another offer for the 23-year-old.

Better than Dendoncker?

Wolves may have a plethora of options to play in a holding position but none are arguably more combative and forceful than Diawara, and Leander Dendoncker is one player who could suffer as a result of Wolves’ interest in the Guinea international.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-ceballos-zinchenko-euros-felix-lage” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

The Belgian is currently playing at Euro 2020 for his country but had a rather indifferent season under Nuno Espirito Santo at Molineux.

The 26-year-old played at centre-back and in midfield but failed to offer them much progression when in control of the ball, while his defensive statistics were also rather hit and miss.

Dendoncker won 1.04 tackles per game, which was fewer than Diawara’s impressive average of 1.64. Furthermore, the Wolves transfer target completed more interceptions (1.23 per match) than the Belgium international, who recorded 0.97 per game.

On top of that, the Guinean is a lot more comfortable in possession. He was successful with 89.3% of his passes last term; a number which put him in the 94th percentile for passing among midfielders in Europe’s top divisions. By comparison, Dendoncker ranks in the 71st percentile for completed passes.

The Roma enforcer hasn’t had the most traditional of upbringings but that hasn’t hindered his football development.

Robert Visan, an Italian agent and scout, noticed his talent from a young age and secured him a trial with a small club in the third division of San Marino back in 2015.

The club’s coach Fabrizio Tazzioli waxed lyrical about him, saying: “I saw the guy in training and thought that he is a phenomenon. He is not as strong physically, but better with his feet and has the same presence on the pitch.”

Being compared to Marcel Desailly, Diawara would be a fabulous capture for Bruno Lage and Wolves, and they must somehow convince him to come to Molineux.

AND in other news, Lage could discover his new Ruben Dias at Wolves in “phenomenal” £62k-p/w beast…

Cidermen set their sights on winning the final Benson and Hedges Cup

Following the conclusion of their championship match against Sussex at Hove Somerset face a hectic nine days, during which they will play their five zonal Benson & Hedges Cup matches

Richard Walsh27-Apr-2002Following the conclusion of their championship match against Sussex at Hove Somerset face a hectic nine days, during which they will play their five zonal Benson & Hedges Cup matches. After close of play today the Cidermen travel to Edgbaston, where they will take on Warwickshire tomorrow. The home side will no doubt still be smarting from their defeat in the Cheltenham & Gloucester semi-final at Taunton last year, when the match was snatched away from them by Keith Dutch and Rob Turner.Over the last few years Edgbaston has not been a particularly happy hunting ground for Somerset, so they will be looking to get their Benson & Hedges campaign off to a good start.Last season Somerset lost to Warwickshire in the zonal round match at the County Ground, but went on to win the group with four wins from five matches to qualify for the quarter-finals, where they were beaten by Yorkshire.Somerset have won the Benson & Hedges Cup on two occasions, in 1981 and 1982, and would dearly like to win the competition which is being phased out to make way for the new mid-season 20-over competition in 2003.Confidence in the Somerset camp is high and it is generally agreed that Jamie Cox and his men are a good bet for one of the limited-over competitions this season. All rounder Pete Trego has been added to the squad for the game, and is expected to play. In the absence of Steffan Jones with a hamstring injury it is likely that Matt Bulbeck and new signing Simon Francis will be in contention for the final place in the line-up.Earlier this morning Somerset chief executive Peter Anderson told me: "Having won the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy in its first year, it would be a great pairing if we could win the Benson & Hedges Cup in its last year."Somerset fans would like nothing better than to have the opportunity to return to Lord’s on June 22nd and see their name engraved on the last-ever Benson and Hedges Cup.

A nicely balanced outfit

The Indian selectors, as a rule, receive very few bouquets; it ismostly brickbats for them

Partab Ramchand17-May-2002The Indian selectors, as a rule, receive very few bouquets; it ismostly brickbats for them. They are everyone’s whipping boys, but I amgoing to give them a hearty pat on the back for doing everything rightin picking the one-day squad to take on the West Indies in the seriesof five limited-overs internationals in the Caribbean starting on May25.Indeed, with the exception of Javagal Srinath, who has opted out forone of his many rests, and the injured Anil Kumble, the side isprobably the strongest that can be fielded at the moment. One also hasthe feeling that this squad will form the nucleus of the World Cupteam about nine months from now.
© CricInfoOf course, it can be said that most of the one-day specialists pickedthemselves. The inclusion of Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif, VirenderSehwag (following a recovery from his shoulder injury) and AjitAgarkar was always on the cards. But the selectors have doneparticularly well in picking Murali Kartik.Indeed, Kartik should have been in the original team to tour the WestIndies. The left-arm spinner from Railways, who can also wield thewillow to good effect, is one of those cricketers who can successfullybridge the gap between Test cricket and the shorter version of thegame. In the limited opportunities Kartik has had, he has neitherfailed nor succeeded, but there is always this feeling about him thathe is a gusty, competitive cricketer who has what it takes to comegood at the international level. One cannot even fault the selectors on the players they have calledback. Certainly few would have backed Shiv Sunder Das, Wasim Jaffer,Deep Dasgupta, Sarandeep Singh and Sanjay Bangar to be retained in theone-day squad. In Bangar’s case, though, it must be said that hisvirtues as a utility cricketer are more suited to the limited-oversgame. But he has been short of both runs and wickets of late, and hisconfidence level cannot be too high. It is hoped that this usefulcricketer comes back, for one suspects he still has a lot tocontribute to Indian cricket.
© CricInfoJaffer, for all the form he has displayed of late, seems a goodprospect for Test cricket, and he should be persevered with at thatlevel. He and Das – when the latter recovers his touch – could solvethe long-standing problem at the top of the Test batting order. Aline-up that starts with Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar andcontinues with Rahul Dravid, Dinesh Mongia, VVS Laxman, Sehwag,Yuvraj, Kaif and Ajay Ratra inspires confidence. By contrast, thebowling, manned by Agarkar, Zaheer Khan, Tinu Yohannan, Ashish Nehra,Harbhajan Singh and Kartik does not look all that strong, but itshould be capable of holding its own against all but the best sides.Overall it is a nicely balanced outfit. Whether it is good enough todefeat the West Indies remains to be seen. Past record certainlyfavours the home team. During the last three tours, the teams haveplayed 12 matches and the West Indies have won 10 and lost two.The Indians must shrug off this psychological disadvantage and havethe self-belief that they are capable of winning a one-day series inthe West Indies against a not-too-strong home side. This alone ensuresthat half the battle is won. Only a year ago, with much the same team, the West Indies lost a one-day series to South Africa in the Caribbeanby five matches to two, and this should be a source of encouragementfor the Indians.

Pundit would love to see Traore sign for Leeds United - Exclusive

As the transfer window continues to get into gear and teams start to really crank up their search for new additions ahead of next season, someone that David Norris would love to see at his former club Leeds United is Adama Traore.

Traore has long been linked with a move away from Wolves this summer and there have been fresh links suggesting that he could be available for just £20 million, and that may well tempt Leeds who have been credited with an interest in the winger previously.

A winger does not appear to be an area of weakness for Marcelo Bielsa’s side but with Rodrigo not hitting the heights expected last season and Raphinha picking up an injury towards the end of the campaign, Bielsa may want to add some more reinforcement to allow him greater options and flexibility.

Traore is one of the most explosive and dynamic players in the Premier League with his 214 attempted dribbles the most out of any payer in England’s top flight last season, so he would bring excitement and frustration to Elland Road, but Norris believes that the winger would prove to be a good signing, as he spoke about Traore exclusively to Transfer Tavern:

“He’s obviously got something to him and Leeds would have done their due diligence on him so if they sign him then you know, he’s a team player as well as a good player. I think if the price is right, then I’d love to see that happen.”

There may well be wholesale changes at Wolves this summer with new manager Bruno Lage set to take fresh ideas into Molineux which could see certain players fall from crucial players last season to surplus to requirements going forward.
