O São Paulo tem um novo mito. Se neste domingo Rogério Ceni disse adeus à carreira de 25 anos, o Tricolor foi salvo pelo xará do goleiro-artilheiro. O atacante Rogério saiu do banco de reservas após suar para se recuperar de lesão na coxa direita e marcou um golaço para sacramentar a vitória por 1 a 0 sobre o Goiás no Serra Dourada. O resultado levou o time paulista à próxima edição da Copa Libertadores da América e rebaixou o Esmeraldino após três anos na elite.

Os mais de 30 mil torcedores presentes no Serra Dourada pareciam todos engasgados, sem forças para cantar. A formação praticada por Milton Cruz neste domingo é um esboço do que restará ao São Paulo na próxima temporada. Com Rogério Ceni e Luis Fabiano na tribuna e Alexandre Pato no banco – todos sairão para 2016 -, o Tricolor foi um time modesto em campo, dependente do esforço elogiável de Hudson para uma forte marcação e nos lampejos de Thiago e Kardec na frente. Já Paulo Henrique Ganso e Michel Bastos participaram muito pouco da partida e arrancaram xingamentos da torcida que compareceu ao Serra Dourada.

No segundo tempo, com os resultados de Figueirense e Avaí, a queda do Goiás foi sendo concretizada. O silêncio da torcida deu lugar a ameaças e os militares da tropa de choque cercaram todo o gramado com cães, armas de fogo e cassetetes. A tensão também pairou sobre a tribuna destinada à diretoria do São Paulo. Torcedores sem camisa grudaram em grade próxima ao local e cobraram a saída do vice-presidente de futebol Ataíde Gil Guerreiro.

O terror técnico persistiu, e os tricolores cada vez mais se distanciavam em campo. Cada atleta era uma ilha no extenso gramado do Serra e nas próprias vaidades. Os sempre criticados Reinaldo e Lucão faziam jogo impecável, enquanto as fontes de habilidade do time eram nulas. A primeira alteração, feita após os 30 minutos, irritou a torcida. Wesley entrou no lugar de Bruno, comprovando a intenção de somente gastar tempo e assegurar o empate suficiente para permanecer na quarta colocação.

Em Goiânia, o São Paulo foi espelho de todo seu ano turbulento. Decisões erradas de Milton como se fora os cabeças da gestão Carlos Miguel Aidar: sacar Thiago para a entrada de Lyanco, causando recuo exagerado da equipe, é apenas um exemplo. Mas como disse Luis Fabiano na semana passada, o interino costuma ter sorte e a vaga na Libertadores saiu.

O interino chamou Rogério aos 43 minutos do segundo tempo e viu o talismã driblar a marcação na ponta esquerda e acertar o chute da salvação no ângulo de Renan. Festa são-paulina nas arquibancadas, em campo e na tribuna da diretoria, com olhos marejados do presidente Leco. Choro também dos esmeraldinos, que mantiveram a tensão no Serra Dourada com bombas e ameaças de confronto com a polícia e os são-paulinos. Que venha 2016!

Leeds United may have spent almost £100m since the end of last season, but their transfer spending may not be over yet.

Indeed, the Whites’ interest in Todd Cantwell has been highly-publicised over the past few weeks, and the Yorkshire club have apparently re-opened talks with Norwich over that move this week.

However, we can’t help but feel that United are after the wrong Norwich City player.

The Whites had previously been linked with Emi Buendia, and if we’re being honest, that seems like a signing that makes a lot more sense.

Now, we aren’t saying that Cantwell isn’t a fantastic player, but everything points towards Buendia being a better fit for Leeds.

The Argentine was one of the most potent chance creators in the division last season, ranking only behind Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish and Trent Alexander-Arnold on that metric.

Some suspect finishing from his teammates, Cantwell included, saw him finish with just seven assists, and while that isn’t a bad total, his chances created numbers suggest it would’ve been a lot higher if not for his teammates’ failings.

Leeds will need a player like this eventually as Pablo Hernandez is closing in on his 36th birthday, and with Buendia able to play both down the right and through the middle, he could be Hernandez’s successor at Elland Road. to make things even better, he’s already proven in the Premier League.

Daniel Farke’s comments on him last season show just how talented he is, as the German was toying with the idea of describing him as world-class.

“When I think about his ability to assist, he is already there with seven. It is perhaps not world class on this level for a winger, but for our level it is top class and it is the best of all our players in these terms,” Farke said.

Leeds would be so much better off coughing up the cash for Buendia rather than meeting Norwich’s £20m asking price for Cantwell.

Manchester United bounced back from a humiliating defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford by beating Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United on Saturday.

After an awful start to the season, the Red Devils needed to hit the ground running against Newcastle at St James’ Park. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side scored three late goals to wash away the taste of the heavy defeat inflicted by Tottenham before the international break.

United had lost two out of their three opening games and their hopes of halting that poor run suffered a blow when Luke Shaw inadvertently directed a cross from Emil Krafth into the back of his own net. Harry Maguire cancelled out the own goal to spare Solskjaer’s blushes before late strikes from Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Aaron Wan-Bissaka sealed a 4-1 win.

It’s fair to say that Shaw had a shoddy start and he didn’t get much better as the game dragged on. Although he was a little unfortunate with the own goal, that doesn’t excuse the fact that it was, overall, a pretty poor performance from the former Southampton man.

Per SofaScore, the left-back lost possession of the ball 19 times, only won three out of seven ground duels, and failed to complete a single dribble attempt or provide a successful cross.

Declan Rice was uncharacteristically wasteful in West Ham United’s victory over London rivals Fulham on Saturday, with the England international unable to leave a positive impression on the result.

The 21-year-old is among the most important players at the London Stadium, where boss David Moyes has called on Rice to start all available Premier League fixtures since returning to succeed Manuel Pellegrini at the helm.

But Rice was far from the player reportedly set to earn a £120,000-per-week contract after transfer interest from Chelsea this summer, as the midfielder West Ham valued as high as £80million frequently struggled to put any pressure on Fulham.

England boss Gareth Southgate has been awash with praise for Rice in recent weeks, using words like ‘maturity’ ‘responsibility’, ‘huge potential’ and ‘great mentality’ to describe the 11-cap international he awarded a debut to.

But Moyes failed to see any of that or any real influence from Rice this weekend, and will be hoping for far better from the midfielder once he returns from Three Lions duty after being named in Southgate’s squad to face the Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Iceland.

Southgate will be hoping his prior praise is met with a performance on the pitch, too, having said via quotes by the official West Ham website: “We are delighted, pleased with how he is developing. He is a good professional, wants to learn, wants to work for the team, digs in for the team, is getting more vocal on the pitch.

“He has huge potential and the reason he has that potential is because he has a great mentality and desire to keep improving. He has other good examples among the senior players here. He knows the ones to follow and that is a good start.

“To have the additional responsibility of [West Ham] captaincy is brilliant and tells you also a bit about him as a person. For someone that young to be given the captaincy tells you the maturity he has, the responsibility he takes.”

Rice offered next to none of what Southgate has lauded him for against Fulham this weekend, as the Irons captain was uncharacteristically careless, particularly in the first half, as he lost five of seven ground duels, four of six aerial duels and turned the ball over on nine occasions, per SofaScore, for a duel success rating of just 30%.

He was further dribbled past when attempting two of his three tackles and committed two fouls, but somewhat made up for those shortcomings with three interceptions and by blocking two shots.

Though Moyes would have expected Rice to offer far more from his vast time on the ball, having recorded 81 touches, yet saw the midfielder attempt just 16 of his 70 passes in the final third, per WhoScored and play just five of his total efforts long – of which three found teammates.

Rice will know he can offer more than what he presented against Fulham, and both Moyes and Southgate will be banking on seeing that on the pitch in the weeks to come.
