Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa conducted his pre-match press conference on Monday ahead of his side’s trip to Preston North End on Tuesday.

The yo-yo automatic promotion battle in the Championship continued at the weekend as the Whites were beaten by Birmingham City and saw their Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United leapfrog them again with a win at Deepdale.

The Argentine boss had plenty to say as usual at Thorp Arch, and these are the two things Leeds supporters need to see.

Pablo Hernandez is a doubt

As per the Yorkshire Evening Post, Bielsa confirmed that the talismanic Spaniard may not feature against Alex Neil’s side following an issue he picked up in the defeat at St Andrew’s at the weekend.

The 63-year-old said: “He received a kick in the last minute of the (Birmingham) game. We are not going to take any risks if playing makes his injury worse.”

While the former Swansea City man failed to make an impact at the weekend, there is no doubt that he is one of the most talented players in the Championship.

With 11 goals and 12 assists in the league this term he would be a huge, huge miss in Lancashire.

Leeds can deal with pressure

Of course, having slipped up against Birmingham at the weekend questions were always going to be asked of Bielsa and his men given they let a top-two position slip again.

Asked whether he side were suffering from nervous, he confidently replied: “We can’t talk about our team. Watching our team I have never seen us overcome by the nerves. We know how to live with it.”

While the experienced manager is never going to admit it even if his players are feeling the pressure, his demeanour certainly suggested that he has confidence in them, and that will surely have translated to his squad too.

His trust in them could prove to be vital as things really hot up in the coming weeks.

In 2013, George Boyd’s move to Nottingham Forest collapsed because of an inconclusive eye test. However, as the 33-year-old rolled back the years to crash home a stunning strike from the left against that very team, there was no doubting his eyesight whatsoever.

It’s rather ironic that the Scot chose Forest as the opposition for a mini-career revival and it proved timely for Wednesday as he boosted their play-off hopes and dented the team’s chances he could have been playing for.

The winger was in phenomenal form as the Owls bounced back from defeat last weekend, claiming an assist as well as a goal as he silenced the critics he’d received in recent weeks.

Boyd’s contract is due to expire this summer but recent displays show he may be worth holding on to.

After all, he’s stepped up in place of the injured Rolando Aarons, a man ten years his junior and full of energy on the flank. The Newcastle loanee missed out against Stoke and during that game, Boyd showed no signs of being able to replace him sufficiently.

But against Villa and Forest he’s more than shown he still has what it takes. If he can find consistency in the final part of the season a new deal could well be on the cards.

The former Burnley man’s display wasn’t all about his goal and assist though. Although that will encourage supporters it was his work rate for someone in the later stages of his career that was perhaps most impressive.

Boyd had the fewest touches of anyone in his team but still managed to be an influence. He showed strong prowess in the air, winning aerial duels in the defensive half of the pitch as well as in offensive areas as he proved to be a menace for the Forest defence.

Before this match, it’s likely Steve Bruce would have been doubting his options in attack. Gary Hooper had made a return from injury but out wide they seemed stretched.

However, the performance of both Boyd and Marco Matias who scored twice has given the Owls boss a selection dilemma he didn’t think he would have.

This is a season-defining week for the club who still have to play Leeds this weekend. It’ll be refreshing, therefore, for the Hillsborough faithful to know that Bruce can rely on more than just his key players during the run-in.

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ hopes of finishing seventh in the Premier League took a hit on Saturday afternoon as they were held at home by Brighton & Hove Albion.

Last season’s Championship winners deserve huge praise for what has been a strong campaign, but they have actually only won one of their last five in the league.

Many would have expected Brighton to be dispatched on Saturday, with the Seagulls recently struggling towards the bottom of the division.

It would be fair to say that the Wolves fans were frustrated with the result, but many were upset with one particular thing that happened.

Indeed, both Ruben Vinagre and Adama Traore were left out of the starting XI and that decision did not go down well with the club’s supporters.

Vinagre was eventually introduced in the 67th minute before Traore came on six minutes from time, but the Wolves fans were upset with Nuno Espirito Santo’s call.

Liverpool ran riot on Friday evening against Huddersfield Town to move back atop the Premier League prior to Manchester City’s clash with Burnley on Sunday, but Daniel Sturridge was the victim of quite a bit of fan backlash.

The Reds won 5-0 at Anfield, putting the already-relegated Terriers to the sword to take their tally for the season to 91 points.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are now hoping for a slip from the Premier League champions, who play Burnley, Leicester City and Brighton & Hove Albion in their run-in. The Reds round off their season with clashes against Newcastle United and Wolves.

Their performance against Huddersfield underlined their intentions, with Naby Keita scoring the opener prior to two braces from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

However, Sturridge endured an evening to forget, having been given a rare start by Klopp.

Per WhoScored, he had just two shots on goal, neither of which were on target, while he had just 30 touches of the ball, noticeably fewer than any other Liverpool player.
