Sheffield Wednesday given update on David Bates by Dom Howson

Sheffield Star reporter Dom Howson has provided an update on the future of centre-back David Bates at Sheffield Wednesday after he was absent during the Owls’ FA Cup victory over Brighton and Hove Albion.

What’s he said?

The Baggies defeated their Premier League opposition last weekend as manager Garry Monk named a slightly-tweaked line up – young prospect Osaze Urhoghide was even handed a debut amongst six changes.

Bates, along with Moses Odubajo, was missing from the entire matchday squad. Howson revealed earlier in the week that the Steve Bruce summer signing has no future at the club under Monk, meaning he is free to leave this month.

In a recent Q&A, he also gave an update on the future of the Hamburger SV defender, he said:

“As for Bates, it is clear he is not part of Monk’s plans. If he was going to play, Brighton seemed an obvious opportunity to give him a run-out.”

Unlikely future?

It appears as if time is running out for Bates at Hillsborough as he has featured just once all season – in the Carabao Cup second round against Rotherham United.

He has been named only twice on the bench under Monk, both of which were the 40-year-old’s first two games in charge. Bates has not been seen since.

Howson’s latest update is a damning on his future as he suggests that it is ‘clear’ he has no part to play this season.

Therefore, it may be wise to send him back to his parent club this month, especially given the wealth of options available in his position currently.

Monk is able to call on skipper Tom Lees, Dominic Iorfa, Julian Borner, and if need be, Sam Hutchinson.

The 23-year-old was signed on a season-long loan from HSV back in August by caretaker boss Lee Bullen.

Leeds fans react to Jack Clarke joining QPR on loan

Leeds United have endured a difficult transfer window so far with no incomings and that could get a lot worse this weekend when QPR come to visit, as they now have former player Jack Clarke amongst their ranks.

The 19-year-old joined the R’s on loan this week having only just returned to parent club Tottenham this month after the North London outfit recalled him from his loan spell at Elland Road.

It may be tough for some fans to see him in another teams colours this weekend having seen him graduate from the academy, and with some success as he scored two and assisted two for the Whites last term.

However, some supporters seem to have short memories as they have turned against the youngster upon hearing his comments, with Clarke stating that the QPR support is as good as that of Leeds.

The game at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium this Saturday is being eagerly anticipated, and rightly so given Leeds desperately need to return to winning ways following a run of one victory in seven matches.

One fan suggests Clarke will do well to get past Luke Ayling, while another thinks he could cause the visitors problems.

However, they seem to be in a minority when it comes to complimenting the former Leeds man, as on the whole supporters have been rather hostile in their comments, which is harsh considering he fetched the club a handsome fee of £10m in moving to Spurs.

If he comes back to haunt them at the weekend there will likely be even more opposition to Clarke, and it will be interesting to see how Marcelo Bielsa deals with him.

In other news, Leeds fans have been reacting to an intriguing update from Phil Hay which could reveal a lot about Marcelo Bielsa.

Wolves midfielder Neves struggles against Newcastle

Ruben Neves struggled in midfield as Wolves drew 1-1 with Newcastle United on Saturday.

On the chalkboard

The Portugal international played alongside Joao Moutinho in the heart of the Wolves engine room.

However, he struggled to have much of an impact on the game as both sides were forced to settle for a share of the spoils; Leander Dendoncker’s goal earned Nuno Espirito Santo’s side a point after Miguel Almiron’s opener.

Per WhoScored, Neves had 82 touches of the ball in total and registered a pass completion rate of 88% from 73 attempted passes.

The 22-year-old did not manage to register a key pass, however, and was also unable to complete a dribble.

More worryingly, he was dribbled past twice, while he completed just 50% of his attempted four tackles.

This was a display that points to a player struggling to find his rhythm.

Becoming a problem

Neves is clearly a talented young midfielder and has been playing at a remarkably high level for a significant period of time, despite his age.

He already has over 100 appearances for Wolves and has also won 16 caps for Portugal but, this season, he hasn’t been at his best.

Per WhoScored, he has merited a rating over seven on just three occasions in the league. In his last three appearances, which includes a substitute run-out against Watford in which he played 36 minutes, he has reached a maximum of 6.38, which actually came on Saturday.

In those games, he has failed to register a single key pass or complete a dribble.

Santo needs to find a way to remedy this because, when he is at his best, Neves is a sensational midfield player, capable of both carrying the ball forward and shooting from range. This season, though, he has two league goals and just one assist to his name. He can do much better than that.

He is better than that.

Meanwhile, Wolves’ top-six quest lies in the hands of one man!

Everton fans yearn for Idrissa Gueye following the 1-1 draw against West Ham

Everton fans have taken to Twitter to yearn for Idrissa Gueye, following the 1-1 draw against West Ham on Saturday.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men managed to scrape a draw against David Moyes’ side thanks to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal, which came after Issa Diop headed the Hammers into the lead.

It was a result that leaves the Toffees in 11th place on 29 points, although following full-time, Everton fans on Twitter have been discussing a man who isn’t even at the club anymore – Gueye.

The Senegal international left Merseyside back in the summer to join Paris Saint-Germain for a fee in the region of £30m, putting an end to a three-year stay at Everton in which he made 108 appearances.

His exit came after he was crowned as the Players’ Player of the Season for his efforts last term, winning the award alongside Lucas Digne.

Gueye, 30, has made 19 appearances so far this season for the French champions, scoring one goal and recording two assists.

Let’s see what the Everton fans are saying about the former Aston Villa man…

To kick off the Twitter discussion, this fan-page with the username ‘The Gwladys Street’ said that they think Gueye would win more battles and do more work than Morgan Schneiderlin, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Tom Davies and Fabian Delph combined, before adding that they’d “do anything to have the main man back”.

Elsewhere, these two supporters added to the yearning over Gueye.

‘Tebs’ described his exit as the “biggest loss since Lukaku” while Jenny added that she misses the Senegalese midfielder “so much”.

Furthermore, John made the saddening statement that he sometimes cries at the fact that Gueye doesn’t play for Everton anymore.

Also, another fan below John said that a “day doesn’t go by when I don’t think about him” – sounds like these two supporters are especially heartbroken even months after the PSG man departed.

Lastly, ‘M3’ said “so true” in agreement of the initial statement from ‘The Gwladys Street’ before saying that the Toffees need Andre Gomes back “ASAP”.

This fan also demanded that Adrien Rabiot, Mathias Vecino, Piotr Zieliński or Emre Can are brought to Goodison Park.

West Brom fans respond to news of Matheus Pereira’s three-game suspension

West Brom have been dealt an untimely blow ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup fourth-round tie at West Ham after the club accepted an FA charge of violent conduct against midfielder Matheus Pereira.

The 23-year-old appeared to be involved in an off-the-ball incident with Joe Allen during the first half of Monday’s defeat to Stoke City and has subsequently been banned for their next three matches, starting on Saturday.

Pereira will be a big blow to Slaven Bilic as he has racked up an impressive 14 assists already this season, not excluding the importance of his five goals either.

Several supporters at the Hawthorns haven’t taken too kindly to the news either as they responded to the club’s announcement on Twitter…

One fan labelled the decision as “disgraceful” as he believes Pereira had been kicked about all season by their opposition without much protection at all.

The numbers would reinforce this too as the Brazilian is fouled 2.7 times per game on average per WhoScored, which ranks as the second-highest in the whole division.

Who the heck is that?! Can you name all of these obscure West Brom players…

Another person went as far as saying “announce relegation” while one more compared it to Dwight Gayle’s sending off in the playoffs last season.

However, not all reaction was of the negative nature as some believed the decision could be a blessing in disguise.

Albion’s form has dipped considerably in the past two months as they have failed to win in six straight league games while it is only one win in seven overall.

A further supporter claimed that Pereira is more needed for their away game at Millwall than enjoying an FA Cup run.

It has also led to calls for the club to hurry on their transfer business as plenty asked them to sign their reported target, Dinamo Zagreb forward Mislav Orsic.

It is believed that the club will make an £8m bid for Orsic in the near future but time is running out with this month’s transfer deadline just a week away.

The Baggies also suffered an injury blow to Grady Diangana on Monday night, and he could be out for the next month, meaning a need for attacking additions is very much there to be seen.

Bilic will need to find a way to transform Albion’s fortunes without the services of his key enigmatic duo.

And in other news, West Brom’s reported pursuit of this goal-laden duo is bordering on “impossible” this month…

Southampton: Carl Anka reveals chances of a summer exit for Pierre-Emile Højbjerg

The Athletic’s Carl Anka has revealed the chances of a summer exit for Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.

Anka made the revelation in the form of a percentage when engaging in a Q&A session with supporters on Friday afternoon, in which he stated that he would “put it at 35%” when asked if a summer move for the Denmark international was “looking likely”.

The former Bayern Munich man has been linked with a move to Tottenham recently, with Sky Sports stating that Spurs had made the midfielder one of their top targets for the January window.

Sky Sports also mentioned that Arsenal and Everton have been interested in attaining the 24-year-old’s services.

Premier League experts will get full marks: The ultimate quiz on top flight transfer flops…

Højbjerg’s contract with Southampton expires in the summer of 2021, and Ralph Hasenhuttl recently said that discussions over fresh terms for himself and his players would not commence until the Saints reach 36 points – they are currently on 31.

It remains to be seen what happens, although an extremely reliable source in Anka has shed some light on the chances of the Southampton captain leaving St Mary’s in the summer.

Rangers fans slate Lewis Stevenson after his challenge on Alfredo Morelos

Rangers may have won against Hibernian, getting back to winning ways, but they are not completely happy after the game.

That’s because they feel they have been hard-done-by due to the referee’s decision making, specifically referencing Lewis Stevenson.

The Hibernian defender was eventually booked for a foul on George Edmundson, but they feel that he massively got away with one before that.

This feeling comes from the moment that Allan McGregor kicked the ball up the pitch to Alfredo Morelos, who was being marked by the 32-year-old.

If the Colombian had turned him he would have had plenty of space to run into, but Stevenson ensured that didn’t happen, as he pretty much jumped on his back and wrestled the Rangers striker to the floor.

Gers fans couldn’t believe that he wasn’t given a booking for that attempt at what can loosely be called a challenge, and quite frankly, they are completely within their rights to feel that way.

They have also felt that had it been the other way round, then Morelos would definitely have been picking up a yellow at least – in truth, he did very well to remain calm considering his fiery nature.

The Colombian has certainly picked up a reputation, having amassed 16 yellow cards and five reds last season, while it can be suggested that last season’s misdemeanours have followed him into the current campaign.

This term, he has been handed two red cards – both given for two bookings – while it can be said that the second yellow against Motherwell, which was given for his celebration, was very harsh.

Meanwhile, one Rangers man was slated by fans for his performance against Hibernian.

West Brom given hint over the financial gain from a Nathan Ferguson summer exit

It’s the saga that just won’t go away – the future of Nathan Ferguson at West Brom.

What’s been said?

For several months now, doubts have been cast over the Black Country as interest ramped up in the 19-year-old defender, and it will only continue to rumble on after the situation took a stunning twist on deadline day.

Ferguson appeared set for a move to Premier League outfit Crystal Palace for a fee of around £11m, add-ons included, but a surprise injury during his medical put pay to that and now he’s back at the Hawthorns with a cloud hanging over his head.

The academy graduate didn’t accept the lucrative terms offered to him by his boyhood club, reportedly a 20-fold increase on his current wages as he faces being out of contract in the summer and will be technically free to leave.

When asked about this in a recent Q&A, Steve Madeley responded with this:

“That’s a matter of debate. We’ve been told that Palace did see him competing for a first-team place right away, but you’re right, that does conflict with suggestions coming from the Albion end that they were willing to loan him back. Clearly once Palace’s medics had their say, all of that was rendered moot.

“As for valuations, tribunals are always really hard to predict, but people I’ve spoken to believe £4m would be a likely ballpark figure. Of course, if he was to move outside England, that would be much lower as Albion would only get FIFA’s standard compensation figure.”

Steve Madeley, The Athletic.

Financial comedown

The Baggies have been in a familiar situation in recent years, and it is one that has left a bitter aftertaste.

Rising starlet Louie Barry had a shock move to Barcelona in the summer as he was out of contract at Albion. FIFA regulations routinely set the fee at a measly £235k, but that still hasn’t even been paid by the La Liga giants – now he’s moved to Midlands rivals Aston Villa for £3m.

If Ferguson moves abroad, a similar fee will be demanded which is a vast difference to the £11m windfall they were about to receive just last week. Likewise, if he stays in England, as Madeley states, the price is likely to be set around £4m give or take, which again is some way short on what they would have got from Palace.

Now Slaven Bilic is left with a player who wanted to leave the club in January, one that is out of contract soon and has shown no willingness to sign a new deal, and one that requires surgery to resolve his sudden knee injury.

Life after football: Do you know what all of these former players did next?

It’s quite the unfortunate saga, which will no doubt have many more twists by the end of the season.

And in other news, West Brom missed out on an opportunity to land the next Luka Modric…

Everton forward Richarlison receives plaudits from Greg O’Keeffe

Greg O’Keeffe has spoken glowingly about Richarlison after his performance in Everton’s 3-1 win over Crystal Palace, during a Q&A on The Athletic.

What did he say?

When Christian Benteke equalised for Palace, after Bernard had opened the scoring, it looked as though Everton may struggle to get the better of them.

However, they finished the game with a relatively comfortable scoreline of 3-1, something that the Brazilian played a key role in ensuring – it could have been even more one-sided in the end.

One fan in the Q&A suggested that Richarlison had been the man of the match, a thought that O’Keeffe wholeheartedly agreed with: “Richarlison was 100% MOTM. He transformed the game. Should have had two assists as well if DCL hadn’t ballooned that late chance.”

Superb performance

It was the 22-year-old who regained Everton’s lead just before the hour mark, as he drove at the Palace defence, before shifting the ball away from Gary Cahill and placing it out of Vicente Guaita’s reach.

Richarlison also produced the impressive header that dropped down off the bar and onto Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s feet for the striker to tap in.

He could have had another assist for the Englishman, if Calvert-Lewin hadn’t somehow missed the target with his late effort.

Outside of that, Richarlison completed both of his attempted dribbles, while three of his five shots were on target.

Did he really play for us?! No Everton fan has managed to name all of these obscure Toffees players….

He wasn’t completely dominant in the air, but won three of the seven aerial duels that he competed in.

There was even a slight defensive contribution from the forward, who made one tackle and one interception.

All of this meant that WhoScored agreed with O’Keeffe, as Richarlison’s rating of 8.9 was enough to see him named their Man of the Match.

Therefore, it is easy to see why the journalist was so enthused by his performance.

Meanwhile, Everton fans react to a confusing moment against Palace.

Wolves fans react to Tim Spiers revealing their 18/19 financial accounts

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ accounts for the 2018/19 campaign have been released and they make for hugely positive reading, and fans have been responding in their droves in response to Tim Spiers relaying the information.

The west Midlanders have turned their profits right around in the space of just a year – in no doubt aided by their involvement in the Premier League.

Wolves have gone from recording a £57m loss to making a £19m profit in their first season back in the top-flight whilst their wage bill has nearly doubled in total.

Times are changing at Molineux with the club looking to compete amongst the top six and regularly contend for a place in a European competition.

Later this week, they’ll be playing their first knockout tie of the Europa League with Espanyol in town.

Here’s how fans have been reacting to the financial news…

There were plenty of positive reactions with an array of superlatives used to help describe the news, including “smashing” and “rosy” whilst one Wolf Pack member went as far as claiming he was  “over the moon” with their finances.

Another took the chance to praise their ownership Fosun as they gambled with Financial Fair Play and it is “truly paying off.”

Others referenced just how huge the difference between the Premier League and Champions League was with it even being described as “absolutely crazy.”

There was even time to take a dig out of former CEO Jez Moxey as one supporter asked the club to send their finances to him to show him what a business with long-term vision looks like while a further fan had doubts over super-agent Jorge Mendes’ involvement.

One member of the Molineux faithful joked that Wolves would finally be signing Brazilian midfielder Anderson Talisca after missing out on him in 2016 and have been long-linked ever since, as per The Sun.
