Celtic agree deal for seventh signing with British star en route to Glasgow

Celtic are beginning to put the wheels in motion for the remainder of their transfer window and are on the verge of announcing a new signing, according to reports.

Brendan Rodgers confirms Celtic close to arrivals

In what has been a slow-moving summer for Celtic, six new players have walked through the door in the form of Kieran Tierney, Callum Osmand, Ross Doohan, Benjamin Nygren, Shin Yamada and Hayato Inamura.

Nevertheless, supporters’ appetite to see more done ahead of their side’s Champions League playoff round tie is only growing stronger, which has prompted Brendan Rodgers to address the Bhoys’ transfer dealings ahead of this weekend’s Scottish Premiership opener against St Mirren.

He stated: “We still have work to do in the market but I’m really excited. The focus is really on the players that are here, and they’ve been working very well and hopefully by the end of the month, we’ll be a stronger squad for the end of the transfer window.

“We hope this week there might be some news on that, but I think coaches in the transfer market don’t move at the same pace.”

After leaving Burnley upon the expiry of his contract, free agent midfielder Josh Brownhill is someone Celtic could look to swoop for amid interest in his signature from elsewhere, though if he were to arrive, it may suggest one or two could depart to streamline the Hoops’ engine room.

Go Ahead Eagles star Jakob Breum has been frequently linked with the Bhoys. While his situation is evolving, Celtic are now poised to announce a signing that will be welcomed by supporters as they push the button on reinforcements.

Jahmai Simpson-Pusey set to undergo Celtic medical on Friday

Taking to social media platform X, Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph confirmed Manchester City’s Jahmai Simpson-Pusey will undergo his Celtic medical ahead of signing on a season-long loan basis.

The reporter stated on Thursday afternoon: “UPDATE: Manchester City centre-back Jahmai Simpson-Pusey is due to travel to Glasgow (Friday) to undergo a medical with Celtic. The 19-year-old is set to join the Scottish champions on a season-long loan deal.”

Admittedly, his senior career has yielded six appearances so far. However, the 19-year-old won the Premier League 2 Player of the Season award in 2024/25, and he is highly rated at his parent club.

Celtic fought off competition from Strasbourg to sign Simpson-Pusey, and he will compete with Cameron Carter-Vickers, Liam Scales and Auston Trusty for a place in the Bhoys’ back four.

Previously labelled “unbelievable” by Pep Guardiola, all that is left now is for minor details to be ticked off before he will officially be unveiled at Parkhead.

Bigger talent than Sesko: Newcastle offered chance to sign £65m "monster"

Fair to say, it’s been a pretty miserable summer for Newcastle United supporters so far.

Let’s start with the positives; they have signed Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale, with the latter saving a penalty during Friday night’s pre-season friendly against Espanyol at St James’ Park.

One man who remains conspicuous by his absence is, of course, Alexander Isak, yet to feature at all during pre-season, as he pushes for a move to Liverpool.

Thus, as Eddie Howe’s team brace themselves for life without the superstar Swede, have they identified their ideal replacement?

Newcastle's search for a new striker

As has been widely reported by David Ornstein of The Athletic and many others, Newcastle found themselves in a head-to-head battle with Manchester United for striker Benjamin Šeško, with the Slovenian choosing to go to Old Trafford instead.

He is simply the latest in a long line of players Newcastle have been rather publicly and ignominiously turned down by during this window, including strikers Hugo Ekitiké, Liam Delap and João Pedro, to name but a few, so have they turned their attention to a new target?

Benjamin Sesko 2024-25 stats (timeless)

Well, according to Graeme Bailey of TBR Football, Newcastle United have been offered the chance to sign Samu Aghehowa from Porto.

Adam Crafton and Ornstein of The Athletic add that the Magpies are ‘considering’ making a move for the 21-year-old, who is reportedly valued at around £65m by the 30-time Portuguese champions.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

So, could the Spaniard soon swap the Estádio do Dragão for Tyneside?

What Samu Aghehowa would bring to Newcastle

First and foremost, to avoid confusion, worth stating up front that, up until November last year, he was known as Omorodion, but requested to go by Aghehowa henceforth, his maternal surname, in honour of his mother.

On the pitch too, he’s had an interesting start to his burgeoning career.

Samu Omorodion for Alaves

On the opening day of the 2023/24 La Liga season, then a teenager, he marked his senior debut with a goal for Granada against Atlético Madrid during a 3-1 defeat at the Metropolitano.

Well, los Colchoneros were so impressed that they signed the unknown youngster just a few days later, paying his €6m (around £5.1m) buyout clause, although he would never actually play for Atleti.

He was immediately loaned out to Deportivo Alavés, scoring eight La Liga goals for los Blanquiazules, including netting home and away against Barcelona, which certainly caught the attention of clubs around Europe.

Sesko vs Hojlund

On the back of this, Chelsea agreed to pay £34m to secure his signature last summer, but the deal collapsed at the 11th hour due to ‘major problems… finalising’ the striker’s contract, supposedly relating to image rights.

Instead, he joined Porto for a reported fee of £12.7m, where he has taken his game to a new level.

In the last 12 months, the 21-year-old has become a full Spain international, debuting against Switzerland in Tenerife last November, before also coming off the bench during June’s Nations League semi-final victory over France.

Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout was certainly impressed by his performances in Portugal, labelling Aghehowa a “monster”, praising his “pace, physicality and aerial ability”.

FC Porto's SamuOmorodioncelebrates scoring their first goal

Meantime, Elias Burke and Gillian Kasirye of the Athletic document how he is the ‘prototype’ of a modern-day centre-forward, given that the Spaniard is ‘tall, quick, and physically imposing’, noting that he also possesses ‘exceptional pace’ and ‘excellent off-ball positioning’ in the penalty area.

Nevertheless, the question still remains; would he be a better signing than Šeško? Let’s compare the duo to find out.

As the table documents, in a near-identical number of minutes, the pair’s statistics are remarkably similar across the board.

The Spaniard scored more goals and overperformed his expected goals by an impressive amount, while the fact he takes over 20% of his touches inside the opposition’s penalty area underlines his poachers’ instincts.

Worth noting that Aghehowa was playing at a slightly lower level; according to Global Football Rankings, the Primeira Liga is the seventh-strongest league in the world, four places below the Bundesliga.

Also, Porto were, and still are, stuck in the Europa League, while RB Leipzig competed in last season’s Champions League, albeit the Spaniard did score six times in nine European appearances, also netting twice during the Club World Cup back in June.

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSesko

Thus, with Šeško snubbing a possible move to Tyneside, Aghehowa appears to be the next-best option on the market, so it would be smart for Newcastle to turn their attention to the Spain international.

New Zealand opener Georgia Plimmer has been ruled out of cricket for remainder of the year after sustaining a bone stress reaction in her groin. The injury means she will be unavailable for the home ODI series against Australia in December.A New Zealand Cricket release said Plimmer experienced pain in her left hip joint during the recent ODI series in India last month. A subsequent MRI and assessment by a specialist upon return to New Zealand confirmed the injury. She is expected to require six weeks of rest and rehabilitation, with a progressive return to high-speed running in January.Along with the Australia ODIs, Plimmer is also set to miss the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield and the Super Smash domestic competitions.”We’re really gutted for this to happen to Georgia when she’s at the top of her game,” Ben Sawyer, New Zealand women’s head coach, said.”She’s certainly a loss for us heading into an important series against Australia. After her recent success at the World Cup and in India it’s disappointing she won’t be able to continue that form for the Wellington Blaze and against Australia next month. Georgia’s determined to rehab well and get back as soon as she can and we’re wishing her a smooth recovery.”Plimmer was New Zealand’s second-highest run-scorer during their successful 2024 T20 World Cup campaign, making 150 runs in six innings. She also made scores of 25, 41 and 39 in the ODI series against India that followed, which New Zealand lost 2-1.

"Bad news" – Leeds and Farke suffer injury "blow" to £40,000-a-week star

Leeds United have been dealt an injury “blow”, with a £40,000-a-week star set for a spell on the sidelines.

Leeds start Premier League season with 1-0 win over Everton

The Whites made a perfect start to life back in the Premier League on Monday evening, beating Everton 1-0.

Summer signing Lukas Nmecha scored the winner from the penalty spot late on, with Anton Stach, Gabriel Gudmundsson and Lucas Perri all making their debuts from the start.

Since then, Leeds have brought in Noah Okafor to bolster their attacking options even further. The Switzerland international has cost the Whites up to £18m, something which Farke was delighted with.

“He has really good pace, he’s a really good dribbler, really good on the offensive one-on-one. A strong player as well. I don’t want to pressure him too much because he’s not played one game, so I’ll let him deliver before, but from his skills, he has more or less everything to impress, and it’s up to him.”

Healy to miss WPL 2025, remains coy about future beyond ODI World Cup

On life after the World Cup, she says without further explanation, “I’ve got some thoughts in the back of my mind about what it looks like for me moving forward”

Alyssa Healy has confirmed she will miss the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) due to the stress injury in her right foot and was coy about her future in international cricket beyond the ODI World Cup in India in October.Healy, who turns 35 in March, missed the T20I portion of the women’s Ashes and was touch and go for the MCG Test. She ended up passing a fitness test to play. But Australia had to completely reconfigure their team to accommodate her not wicketkeeping and batting in the middle order.Beth Mooney took the gloves while Healy moved to the middle order, with Georgia Voll picked to open on debut and Tahlia McGrath selected to bat at No. 8 ahead of three specialist bowlers. McGrath ended up batting at No. 7 because Ellyse Perry corked her hip in the field.Related

Healy got through the match, scoring 34 with the bat and fielding without issue, but confirmed post-match that she would not play in the WPL for UP Warriorz and would also miss Australia’s three-match T20I series against New Zealand that starts just two days after the WPL final in March. The Australia women’s team do not have any international cricket scheduled after that until an ODI series in India in September that runs straight into the World Cup.”Unfortunately for me, I’ve got a couple of months with [my] feet up, so I’m pretty bummed by that,” Healy said. “But at the same time [I am] elated to have a little bit of downtime and try and get my body right. It’s been a really frustrating probably 18 months for me.”You get yourself right back playing and something else goes wrong. So [I am] just going to have a look at a couple of things and how I can be better, maybe a bit more disciplined in some areas, and make sure I’m right to go in particular for that ODI World Cup. It’s going to be a huge load coming off not a lot of cricket for a lot of the girls in the winter. So just managing things to get right for that. But I’m looking forward to sticking my feet in an ice bucket for a bit.”Healy: “It’s been a really frustrating, probably 18 months for me”•ICC/Getty Images

Healy has had a wretched run with injuries over the past five months. She ruptured her plantar fascia in her foot at the T20 World Cup in October last year which saw her miss Australia’s final group match and the semi-final against South Africa. That injury, she believes, has played a part in this stress reaction. In between, she suffered a knee injury in the early stages of the WBBL that saw her miss the remainder of the season and the ODI series against India. She played the December ODI series in New Zealand as a specialist batter before being fit to keep in the first three ODIs of the Ashes.Healy was asked about her future beyond the ODI World Cup later this year, but she did not reveal her plans.”I’ve got some thoughts in the back of my mind about what it looks like for me moving forward,” she said. “But I think most importantly for me, when I took on this role I wanted to get us to that ODI World Cup, and get us into a place where we wanted to be in a really great place as a group, playing some really good cricket, and obviously to hold that trophy at the end of it.”That was what I said in my four-point PowerPoint plan to present my case as to why I could be captain.”But I think for me, what I’ve kind of really enjoyed over the last sort of 18 months, two years of doing the job, is what we’ve been able to achieve and probably how the group has come along such a long way. I think for me personally to have played a little bit of a role in that, in helping drive that has been really cool. So we’ll wait and see what the future looks like.”
