Rod Bransgrove to step down as Hampshire chairman

Businessman who helped saved club from insolvency will hand over after 23 years at helm

Rod Bransgrove, the man who saved Hampshire cricket, has announced he will step down as the county’s chairman at the end of the season after 23 years.Bransgrove, 72, rescued Hampshire from insolvency in 2000, completed the club’s move from its 116-year home at Northlands Road to the Ageas Bowl and has overseen a successful era on the south coast. The £15 million he has spent on the county is more than any other individual has invested in the game throughout the history of English cricket.Bransgrove, who owns over 60% of the shares of the club, will be replaced by Nick Pike. Pike has been deputy chairman since 2021, having been an original investor in Rose Bowl plc in 2001 and was managing director of Hampshire Cricket before acting as non-executive director and vice-president.Bransgrove made the announcement to members ahead of the LV=Insurance County Championship fixture with Essex in the atrium of the pavilion which bears his name.”I will be standing down as chairman of Hampshire Cricket at the end of the year,” he said. “There are many reasons for this but for one I am getting older. Also when we started this journey 23 years ago I promised you four things.”Firstly, that we would save Hampshire cricket from insolvency and the fact we are all here is proof of that. Secondly, that we would create a team that competes with the very best in all competitions, and we are now one of the teams nobody wants to play.”The third important point was that we would create a stadium capable of housing the very best international and Test match cricket and the recent announcement is the final validation of that very long and sometimes very difficult journey.”And the other was to create a business all around Hampshire cricket to make sure that the county is never again threatened with insolvency. We are a long way to doing that and the business around the site is becoming extremely valuable.”The announcement coincides with the launch of Ivo Tennant’s biography .As part of the foreword for the book, England legend Ian Botham wrote: “If you look around the county clubs in England there is one man who stands out. He did not play the game professionally but he has supported it through his own hard work, as a businessman and as a cricket lover who has both rescued Hampshire and developed an outstanding international venue on the south coast.”[Without Rod] there would be no Rose Bowl, no international matches on the south coast and Hampshire County Cricket Club would have been homeless and destitute.”Bransgrove’s decision to step down comes after realising his ambition to host an Ashes Test match, with the ground scheduled to host a match in the 2027 series. It will be the eighth Test match to be held on the ground – with the other matches including three behind closed doors during the Covid pandemic and the World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand in 2021.The Ageas Bowl – which is set to receive a new title sponsor at the end of this season – will also host India in 2029, a yet-to-be-decided Test in 2030, and a Women’s Ashes Test in 2031, along with regular white-ball matches in the next eight years.Off-the-field Bransgrove has overseen the building and development of the Ageas Bowl – which now includes the Hilton hotel and Boundary Lakes Golf Course, with plans for more additions currently under consideration with Eastleigh Borough Council.Having turned the county from a members club to the first county cricket PLC on his arrival, Bransgrove has considered selling the club in recent years – and turned down a substantial offer earlier this year.Bransgrove said in : “A very successful businessman approached us with an offer to take over all the company’s debt and pay some tens of millions in cash to acquire the whole business but the attraction was not the money going into my pocket. The offer was based on the premise that he would immediately inject a further £50m after the purchase in order to move Hampshire forward.”The club is currently valued at over £100m, and carries around £60m in debt. The Ageas Bowl hosted the first T20 match in 2003 and Hampshire has been synonymous with the format, with a record ten visits to Vitality Blast Finals Days which have resulted in three trophies.Bransgrove’s reign has also seen four other white-ball triumphs and a Division Two title in the County Championship, albeit without ending a 50-year wait for a Championship despite plenty of near-misses. Before Bransgrove arrived, Hampshire had only managed eight trophies in their previous 137-years.He also put his weight behind bringing women’s cricket to the Ageas Bowl and helped turn Southern Vipers into the most successful side in the country. The team has won a Kia Super League, two Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophies, and two Charlotte Edwards Cups in their eight-year existence.Bransgrove added: “Thank you for your amazing support over the 23 years. It has been astonishing as cricket has been through so much change in that time and nowhere more than at the Ageas Bowl.”

Buttler slams 'poor' Dharamsala outfield, urges players to be careful in the deep

“You want to dive through a row of houses to save a run. That’s obviously not ideal, the way the surface is, the outfield”

Jos Buttler has described the sandy Dharamsala outfield as “poor” and questioned the venue’s fitness to host a World Cup fixture, after urging his England players to be careful when diving in the deep against Bangladesh. The outfield was rated “average” by the match officials for Bangladesh’s six-wicket win over Afghanistan on Saturday, despite its patchy appearance and sandy base which contributed to Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s knee digging into the surface when diving to save a boundary.Jonathan Trott, Afghanistan’s coach, said Mujeeb was “lucky” to avoid a serious injury and contacted England players to warn them about the outfield’s condition. But the ICC said that independent pitch consultant Andy Atkinson had inspected the outfield on Sunday and is “comfortable” with it – as is match referee Javagal Srinath.Related

Sandy outfield raises concerns about remaining World Cup matches in Dharamsala

England trained at the scenic HPCA stadium on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning, and Buttler, their captain, admitted he had concerns about the outfield. “I think it’s poor, in my own opinion,” he said. “I think any time you’re talking about being careful diving, or maybe being careful when you’re fielding, it goes against everything you want to be as a team.”You want to dive through a row of houses to save a run. That’s obviously not ideal, the way the surface is, the outfield. But we won’t use it as an excuse. We’ll adapt to it. But certainly if you feel like you’re having to hold yourself back, it’s not a place you want to be as a team, or as a player, or in a World Cup match.”Rangana Herath, Bangladesh’s spin-bowling coach, said that the team’s management had not given any specific instructions for fielders not to dive. “We are not going to restrict anything so that they give 100%,” he said. “We will tell them to give their best.” On the outfield, he said: “If it is good for playing international cricket, I am happy with it.”Asked if he was happy that the game was going ahead, Buttler told the BBC: “The powers that be are comfortable. The only thing I would question is, if you are telling players not to dive and stuff, does that question the integrity of the game? The worst-case scenario is something bad happens, but fingers crossed that doesn’t happen for both teams.”Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s knee got stuck upon diving in the sandy Dharamsala outfield•ICC/Getty Images

An India vs Australia Test match was moved out of Dharamsala at short notice earlier this year owing to the outfield’s condition, though the ground did host two IPL fixtures soon after. Buttler was involved in one of those, and said: “The outfield is different to when we played here in the IPL.”Buttler said that his players would have to be careful in the deep, “which isn’t what you want to be doing when you’re playing for your country.” He added: “You want to put your body on the line and be trying to save every single run and have confidence in the field. It’s not as good as it could be, or should be.”Naturally, you want to be instinctive in the field: if you see a ball, you want to dive for it. So it’s unique, to be honest and I know it’s going to be the same for both teams. But if you’re having to hold yourself back, you shouldn’t have to feel like that. Hopefully, fingers crossed, no-one on either side picks up an unfortunate injury.”England’s seamers tested out the run-up areas during their training session on Monday. “It’s just getting that level of trust,” Buttler explained. “When guys are tearing in and trying to bowl fast, you need that confidence in your run-up. It’ll probably take guys a couple of balls to get used to it, but they’re professionals and they’ll adapt.”

Villani helps Hurricanes open their account in eight-over dash

Defending champions Adelaide Strikers struggled to find top gear with the bat

Elyse Villani ensured Hobart Hurricanes completed the chase in relative comfort•Getty Images

Captain Elyse Villani powered Hobart Hurricanes to their first win of the WBBL season with an upset over defending champions Adelaide Strikers in a truncated match at a bleak Allan Border Field.Restricted to an eight overs per side contest, Villani bludgeoned an unbeaten 39 from 24 balls as Hurricanes chased down the target of 75 with an over to spare. It was an impressive bounce back from Hurricanes, who suffered two big losses against Perth Scorchers to start the season.Strikers were left to rue Danielle Gibson dropping Villani with a regulation chance at midwicket on the second ball of the innings. Villani made them pay instantly with a couple of boundaries off legspinner Anesu Mushangwe. It wasn’t long before opener Lizelle Lee found her range with a trio of sixes in the space of four deliveries. Her purple patch ended when Lee was bowled by offspinner Georgia Adams, but Villani was in command as Hurricanes inched closer. They lost Bryony Smith and Heather Graham, but consecutive boundaries off thick outside edges from Ruth Johnston got the Hurricanes over the line. There were fears of a washout with rain persistent throughout the day in Brisbane, but the match finally got underway almost two hours after schedule.Hurricanes elected to bowl in the gloomy conditions and were confronted by an aggressive Katie Mack, who was looking to bludgeon almost every delivery to the boundary. She succeeded in whacking offspinner Molly Strano for successive boundaries in the opening over, but it wasn’t easy with the ball coming off the wicket slowly and the outfield wet.Hurricanes started disastrously when legspinner Amy Smith dropped a return catch when opener Laura Wolvaardt was on six. After a slow start, tied down by Smith’s looping leg breaks, Wolvaardt smashed a six over deep midwicket to ignite Strikers. After struggling to hit boundaries square of the wicket, the openers sought an inventive approach with Wolvaardt clearing her leg to conjure several effective slogs as they plundered 26 runs across the fifth and sixth overs.Just when Strikers had the momentum, they were shackled at the death with quick Shabnim Ismail cleverly changing her pace and bowling into the wicket. A desperate Strikers went for broke with Mack run-out after turning back for an unlikely second run. They finished on a high with a Wolvaardt boundary but the total ultimately was not enough, with the last two overs bringing just 15, as Strikers’ title defence has started with two defeats from their opening four games.
