'Adaptable' Sam Curran embraces multi-purpose role at England with 'open mind'

“For me right now, coming off a six-month lay-off with injury, I want to play all formats if I can”

Sam Curran was ruled out of last year’s T20 World Cup through injury two weeks before the tournament began, and he is not taking his involvement in the 2022 edition in Australia for granted.Curran was only a peripheral member of the limited-overs set-up when England picked their 50-over squad in 2019 and suffered a lower-back stress fracture while playing in the IPL in the build-up to last year’s tournament in the UAE.Just over a month before their first game of the 2022 edition, against Afghanistan on October 22, he is anxious not to put the mockers on himself. “I don’t actually want to talk about it too much,” he said, laughing, when asked about playing in a World Cup for the first time.Related

Alex Hales: 'I thought my chance would never come again'

“I missed the last one. I need to get through this series and then hopefully, when I’m in Australia, I can be excited about it. The biggest thing this summer was getting my body through it… the priority now is the World Cup.”Curran spent the English summer focusing on white-ball cricket, working closely with Surrey and England’s medical teams to ease him back from injury. He made five Championship appearances but with restrictions on his workload – he bowled just 41 overs – and decided with the ECB in August to focus on short-form cricket ahead of the World Cup.”I didn’t bowl much for Surrey at all,” he said. “The most I bowled in a game was 20 overs [24] and it felt like the sensible option. The Test team were flying at the time so my focus was purely on the World Cup and trying to have a good Hundred, to keep performing and to get my body right.”Curran has not played Test cricket in over a year but a strong T20I tour to Pakistan would put him in the frame for the three-match series here in December. “I’m still pretty young so I want to play as much as I can,” he said.”You’ve seen guys who are choosing to rest in certain periods because there is quite a lot of cricket. For me right now, coming off a six-month lay-off with injury, I want to play all formats if I can.”He was used up the order in short-form cricket this season, first by Surrey in the Blast and then by Oval Invincibles in the Hundred, but England’s top-order logjam means that he is more likely to come in as a finisher during the World Cup.”I’m trying to be as adaptable as possible. I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of rotation: guys coming back from injury, newer guys coming in. My role might vary as guys come back or guys come in. The role I’m given is just to contribute with the ball when I bowl and when I’m batting.”That may be lower down the order here but I guess it’s about adapting to conditions. I don’t think about it too much at Surrey or in the Hundred because I had pretty set roles but with England, naturally I do because we’ve got so many allrounders who can be adaptable.”I might get sent up as a floater to take on different types of bowlers. Whenever I do play for England, I play with an open mind. You don’t just want to be a cricketer whose set for one role which I think is one of my strengths: to be as adaptable [as possible] for the captain and for guys in the team.”It is four-and-a-half years since Curran made his international debut against Pakistan and he is looking forward to playing against some familiar faces on his first trip to the country. “Most of the Pakistan guys I know,” he said. “I played against a few of them at the Under-19 World Cup, like Shadab [Khan]. He’s a fantastic player.”This is a great chance for myself and most of our players – even guys that aren’t in the World Cup squad – to stake a claim, keep knocking down the door; but also just to be here, be involved with a pretty historic trip to Pakistan and take it all in.”

Wolves considering move to sign £8m Munetsi partner after January approach

Following a busy deadline day, Wolverhampton Wanderers have already set their sights on the summer transfer window and are reportedly considering a swoop to sign a player they made a winter approach for.

Wolves transfer news

Having struggled to get all of their reinforcements over the line in the summer, Wolves ensured that they welcomed the fresh faces they so desperately needed during the January transfer window. Even after losing out on their top options, those at Molineux still crucially managed to hand Vitor Pereira two central defenders and a central midfielder in the form of Emmanuel Agbadou, Marshall Munetsi and Nasser Djiga.

After putting pen to paper as Wolves’ final arrival on deadline day, Munetsi told the club’s official website: “I’m delighted. It’s a dream come true for me.

“I’ve always wanted to be part of something big, and being part of Wolves is something that is very big for me, and is big for my family. It’s a team that I’ve also seen from afar, and the Premier League is the best place to be, so I’m delighted to join the family, to join the team.”

Senior Wolves player now gives green light to join new club in late twist

He recently saw an earlier potential move exit collapse…

It may not be too long before the midfielder has a fresh partner at the heart of Pereira’s side either. According to A Bola, as relayed by Sport Witness, Wolves are now considering a summer move to sign Hidemasa Morita from Sporting Club having already made an approach to sign the 29-year-old in the winter window.

Hidemasa Morita

Reportedly put off by the midfielder’s €10m (£8m) price tag so close to 30 years old, it will certainly be interesting to see how quickly Wolves’ stance changes if they’re on the hunt for another fresh face in the summer window.

"Underrated" Morita would add key experience

With Mario Lemina’s future still in question, Morita could arrive in the summer to replace the midfielder’s experience at a crucial time for Pereira’s side. Should they stay up and avoid what would be disastrous Premier League relegation, Wolves should set their sights on higher ambitions and Morita could play a large part in that.

Dubbed “underrated” by football presenter Alex Brice, the 29-year-old may yet get the opportunity to make one of the biggest moves of his career just as some begin to question whether he is too old to complete such a switch in the summer.

Current Manchester United boss and former Sporting manager Ruben Amorim was also full of praise for Morita during his tenure, telling reporters as relayed by Breaking The Lines last summer: “I think every manager should train at least one Japanese player.

“A player who is always ready to help the team, apologises 1,000 times a day, is very respectful, will play anywhere and just wants to learn…I only have good things to say about Hidemasa Morita.”

Sold for 224% profit: Leeds struck gold on star who Bielsa dubbed "special"

Leeds United’s lead at the top of the Championship table is tight. The Whites are just two points clear of second place Sheffield United but are on an impressive unbeaten run. Daniel Farke’s team have not lost in 14 Championship fixtures, dating back to the end of November.

Playoffs are surely all but sealed for the Yorkshire side, given there is a gap of over 20 points between them and sixth place, which would still see them get into the playoffs. However, with seven points separating them from fourth, it will be a battle to gain automatic promotion and win the league.

Farke will need his attacking stars to stand up for the count if Leeds are to win promotion this season, following in the footsteps of the days of Marcelo Bielsa.

The form of Leeds’ attackers

There have been some dominant wins for Leeds this season, with the best of the brunch the recent 7-0 thrashing of Cardiff City at Elland Road. This was a perfect example of the electric form the Whites’ attackers have been in this season.

One of the most exciting attacking players to don the Leeds shirt this season has been Daniel James. The Welshman has scored ten goals and grabbed six assists from the wing, with his pace, once clocked at 35.67 km/h, capable of really harming teams.

Another attacker who has been on fire this season is Joel Piroe. The 25-year-old Dutchman has scored 14 goals in all competitions this term, more than any of his teammates, and also has six assists to go along with those. Two of those came in the dominant win over Cardiff.

There have also been exceptional contributions from the likes of Wilfried Gnonto and Brenden Aaronson, who each have ten goals and assists so far this season. Leeds’ attackers have been on fire.

Farke will no doubt want his side to continue this form in front of goal, which will be key to their promotion hopes. However, Leeds fans may well be wishing they had a former star to add to their options up front, who has become a world superstar.

The former Leeds star who was sold for huge profit

It is not every day that a football legend like Romario calls you “one of the best in the world”. However, that is exactly what he said about former Leeds ace Raphinha, who has been in fantastic form at Barcelona since his move from Elland Road two and a half years ago.

Market Movers

The 28-year-old Brazilian has been on another level for the La Liga giants this season but became a household name for his exploits in a Leeds shirt. He only played for the club for two seasons but was sensational in that time.

In 67 games over those two campaigns at Elland Road, Raphinha scored 17 times and grabbed 12 assists. All of those came in the Premier League, and he was, in many ways, responsible for the Whites surviving relegation, with a final-day goal against Brentford to secure a 2-1 win enough to help his side stay up.

After moving to Camp Nou in the summer of 2022, the winger only showed glimpses of his best form until this season. He has been unstoppable under Hansi Flick, scoring 24 goals and grabbing 15 assists in just 35 games. That includes a Champions League hattrick against Bayern Munich earlier in the season.

Selling Raphinha, as disappointing as it was to lose him, was almost unavoidable. However, former director of football at Elland Road, Victor Orta, struck a great deal and made an excellent profit on the Brazilian.

They signed him for £17m from Rennes in 2020 and ended up selling him for £55m, making a profit of 224%, an excellent piece of business for the Whites.

If only Farke had Raphinha to call upon today, the Yorkshire club might have an outrageous lead at the top of the Championship. They certainly would be an even deadlier side if they had the man Biesla once called “special” in their squad.

Harry Podmore moves on from Kent after signing Glamorgan deal

Seamer seeks fresh start after two injury-blighted seasons at Canterbury

Harry Podmore has signed a multi-year contract with Glamorgan after struggling with injury across his last two seasons with Kent.He will be tasked with leading the seam attack in the Championship in the absence of Michael Hogan, who is set to U-turn on his retirement and join Kent in an unrelated deal which has taken Glamorgan’s hierarchy by surprise.Podmore, 28, joined Kent from Middlesex in 2018 and enjoyed success in the County Championship, taking 43 Division Two wickets in his first season with the club and a further 52 in Division One the following summer after winning promotion. He has struggled with injuries over the last two seasons, though was part of the Kent squad that won the Royal London Cup this year and played twice when they won the T20 Blast in 2021.”After a challenging couple of seasons, I have decided to leave Kent, and I do so with a heavy heart,” Podmore said. “I have loved my time at the club, and am proud to be a capped player. I will always cherish the memories of winning two trophies and competing well in Division One of the County Championship. I simply feel it is time for a fresh start.”Podmore has previously played for Glamorgan on loan from Middlesex, and said he felt a “sense of ambition and excitement around the club” after conversations with director of cricket Mark Wallace. “I strongly believe my best cricket lies ahead of me, and look forward to thriving in all formats,” he added.Wallace said: “He’s a very talented bowler who can bowl long and consistent spells and will bolster our attack across the formats. Having known him from his loan spells here, we are certain he will fit in well in the dressing room. He is at the age where his peak years lie ahead and can perform across all formats.”As well as Hogan, Glamorgan released four seam-bowling options at the end of the 2022 season (Lukas Carey, Joe Cooke, Ruaidhri Smith and James Weighell) as well as wicketkeeper Tom Cullen. They recently announced the signing of Zain Ul Hassan, an allrounder who represented the South Asian Cricket Academy this summer, while academy players Ben Morris and Ben Kellaway have also signed rookie contracts.

A £70m star in the making: Spurs hit gold with "incredible" Ange signing

Ange Postecoglou has been in the Tottenham Hotspur hot seat for about a year and a half.

Since taking the job, he’s made the team one of the most entertaining to watch in the Premier League, but while he enjoyed an incredible run at the start of last season, it’s not been so easy since.

For example, he has overseen more losses than wins in the league this year, although now that some of his stars are returning to the team, the results are also starting to improve.

Tottenham Hotspur manager AngePostecogloucelebrates after the match

Moreover, while not every signing has been a hit, many have been, including one player who’s been in fine form this term and has won comparisons to a star worth an enormous sum of money.

Postecoglou's most impactful Spurs signings

While not every addition made by Postecoglou has been a hit at Spurs, he has made more than his fair share of brilliant signings since the summer of 2023, and one of the very best has undoubtedly been Micky van de Ven.

The Dutch international joined the North Londoners from VfL Wolfsburg for around £43m in August 2023, and while he has had several injury problems since, he’s been a revelation when fit.

In all, he’s made 41 appearances for the club, in which he’s scored three goals, provided two assists, set the Premier League sprint record – 37.38km/h – and completed a clean sweep of the Lilywhites’ Player of the Season awards last term.

Another star addition from the same summer has been James Maddison, as while he’s certainly someone who can blow hot and cold at times, he’s managed to rack up a rather impressive haul of 14 goals and 16 assists in 63 games since his £40m move from Leicester City, and thanks to his recent uptick in form, there are now talks about his potential return to the national team squad.

Lastly, while there are other names, one of the stand-out recruits from the summer just gone has been Dominic Solanke, who, in just 29 appearances this season, has scored 11 goals and provided six assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.7 games.

With all that said, there’s another signing made under the Australian’s tenure who is having the season of his life and has since won comparisons to an incredibly valuable player.

The Spurs gem who's a £70m star in the making

While Solanke was doing brilliantly prior to his injury and climbing up the club’s top scorer list for this season, he was still behind one of Postecoglou’s other signings: Brennan Johnson.

In fact, the Welshman, who joined the club for around £47.5m from Nottingham Forest in September 2023, has only further extended his lead atop the club’s goalscoring chart recently.

His brace against Ipswich Town on the weekend takes him to 14 goals in 34 appearances, totalling 2211 minutes, across all competitions this season.

When you add his three assists to that tally, it comes out to a brilliant average of a goal involvement every other game or every 130.05 minutes.

Unsurprisingly, such a great return so far has seen the former Forest ace win comparisons to some of the most exciting players around, including Liverpool’s Luis Diaz.

The comparison primarily stems from FBref, which compares players in similar positions in the Premier League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and in this instance, has concluded that the Colombian is the second most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Spurs star.

The best way to see where this comparison has come from is to look at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including, but not limited to, non-penalty goals plus assists, shots, passes and crosses into the penalty area, passes blocked, aerial duels won and more, all per 90.

Luis Diaz in action for Liverpool vs Wolves

While being likened to a winger who’s part of a team that looks set to win the Premier League is already great in and of itself, this comparison also bodes well for the 23-year-old’s future price tag.

For example, Football Transfers value the Liverpool star at up to €86.4m, which comes to about £72m, and if Johnson is so statistically similar to the Colombian, who is to say that he too won’t be worth that much should he keep up his current scoring form?

Ultimately, not everything has worked out for Postecoglou since he joined the club, but one thing the Australian has done is bring in more talented players, with the former Nottingham Forest gem chief among them.
