A big upgrade on Doku: Man City chasing move for "electric" £85m star

Manchester City’s winter spending spree is underway.

On Monday, the Sky Blues unveiled Abdukodir Khusanov, joining from Lens for a reported fee of £34m.

This week, the Citizens are also expected to complete the signings of Vitor Reis from Palmeiras and Omar Marmoush of Eintracht Frankfurt, but Pep Guardiola is not done yet, now eyeing up a move for one of the most exciting English talents currently playing abroad.

Man City chasing a new winger

According to a report from Spain, Manchester City, alongside Chelsea and Bayern Munich, are set to ‘compete’ for the signing of Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens.

Fabrizio Romano adds that Liverpool are also “monitoring the situation”, with Florian Plettenberg and Patrick Berger of Sky Sports Deutschland believing the 20-year-old is valued at around €100m (£85m).

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Englishman spent time in both Chelsea and Manchester City’s academy set-ups, but ditched the Sky Blues for Borussia Dortmund at the age of 16, taking a similar path to that established by Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho.

Since making his senior debut against Wolfsburg in April 2022, Gittens has scored 16 goals and provided 14 assists in just 84 outings for die Schwarzgelben, registering a goal involvement every 132 minutes on average.

So far this season, despite the fact Nuri Şahin’s side are struggling in general, the youngster has gone to another level, scoring seven times in the Bundesliga and four times in the Champions League, most notably on target against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu in October, as well as in November’s Klassiker draw at Westfalenstadion.

You may know this player as Jamie Bynoe-Gittens however, at the start of this season, he decided to shorten his name following a discussion with his father, the pair agreeing it would be ‘easier to pronounce’.

What Jamie Gittens would bring to Manchester City

Regardless of what is on the back of his shirt, he’s certainly a player to watch, with data analyst Ben Mattinson on X particularly enthused by his “electric pace”, while Sebastian Stafford-Bloor of the Athletic believes his “two-footed finishing and blazing speed” will be impossible for new England manager Thomas Tuchel to ignore.

The 20-year-old is certainly attracting attention from clubs in England, so could we soon see him gracing the Premier League?

Guardiola has plenty of wingers at his disposal already, namely Jack Grealish, Bernardo Silva, Savinho and Jérémy Doku, but keeps on chopping and changing in search of a winning formula.

Will Unwin of the Guardian has praised Doku’s “maverick tendencies”, saying they provide Man City with something different, which is in stark contrast to Grealish, who Richard Jolly of the Independent believes is no longer “exciting”, with Guardiola’s over-coaching responsible.

Thus, stylistically, the Man City player Gittens is most similar to is certainly Doku, so let’s see how the duo compare.

As the table, using data since the start of last season outlines, Gittens and Doku are very similar players.

Gittens ranks higher for both goals and shots per 90, while Doku has the slight edge when it comes to assists, progressive carries and take-on success %.

Nevertheless, across Europe’s top five leagues this season, Gittens ranks second for attempted take-ons (118), behind only Lamine Yamal, who’s not bad, while the young Englishman also sits eighth for goals – xG, with an impressive tally of +4.6, bettered only by one Bundesliga player, that being Marmoush, who’s already on his way to Man City.

What is clear is that Gittens is a future superstar, so if the Sky Blues, or anyone else for that matter, get the chance to secure his services, they should certainly take it.

Marizanne Kapp holds nerve for Invincibles as Alana King, Bryony Smith threaten Rockets miracle

Visitors stumble over line in 113-run chase as spinners apply the brake

Oval Invincibles 115 for 5 (Bates 41, Kapp 34*) beat Trent Rockets 112 for 9 (Sciver 59*) by five wicketsAll-rounder Marizanne Kapp starred as Oval Invincibles beat Trent Rockets by five wickets with a ball to spare at Trent Bridge after Bryony Smith almost pulled off a miracle at the end.The Rockets’ small target of 112, helped by Nat Sciver’s 59 not out off 48 balls, seemed like it would not be enough as Suzie Bates, 41 from 32, and Alice Capsey, 24 from 18, put the Invincibles well ahead of the rate. The visitors had victory in sight before Smith (three for 21), tasked with defending just five from the last 10 deliveries, saw her first eight leg breaks take two wickets for just three runs. It would be South African Kapp, 34 from 27, who held her nerve, hitting the winning runs.Last year’s fixture was washed out meaning this was the first match between the sides in the competition. The weather threatened again with grey clouds overhead and the floodlights on. Feeling the conditions would be in their favour Invincibles captain, Bates chose to bowl. The Rockets made a good start, Smith the only casualty of the powerplay, leaving them 27 for one. With 51 at halfway and eight wickets in hand, the Rockets looked set to post their highest total of the year. The measly Eva Gray, who had earlier seen Sciver dropped, bowled South African Mignon du Preez to shift the momentum back. But with Sciver there the Rockets still had a chance of a big score. All she needed was a partner to boost the innings but it never came.Instead, the Rockets lost three wickets in four balls. Alana King and Marie Kelly fell to the 85th and 86th balls. Sciver almost fell from the 88th, Capsey dropping a caught-and-bowled chance but the falling ball hit the stumps to run out Katherine Brunt at the non-striker’s end.The Rockets never recovered from the blip and ended up posting a below-par 112 for eight, thanks to tight bowling from Kapp’s one for 18 and the impressive Gray, two for 16.In reply, the Invincibles’ captain, Bates showed the positive intent the Rockets’ innings lacked. The New Zealander swept Sciver for six and found the boundary with ease, to leave her side well ahead at 33 for one from the powerplay. The leg-spin of King and Sarah Glenn could not stop the tide, with a six from youngster Capsey taking the rate to under a run a ball after 33 deliveries. The pair would continue to clear the rope off the spinners, something the Rockets failed to do once in their innings. At 70 for one at halfway, the Invincibles were cruising. That all changed when Capsey fell going for another six off Glenn. Bates was next to go, dismissed by Glenn four balls later, to give the Rockets a sniff. The next set of 10 bowled by King conceded zero runs bringing huge roars from the Trent Bridge crowd and left the Invincibles needing 33 from the final 30.Some timely boundaries from Kapp gave the Invincibles just five needed from the final 10. But the game turned again, as Smith’s magic threatened an unlikely win before Kapp struck another boundary to finish the game.

Better than Disasi: Aston Villa in advanced talks to sign a "quality" star

Aston Villa have already been busy this window, looking to equip Unai Emery with the necessary tools for the second half of the season, competing in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

Donyell Malen arrived from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of around £19m plus £2.5m add-ons, and last week Villa added to that addition, bringing 21-year-old left-back, Andres Garcia, to the club from Levante for a fee of around £5.91m.

But the Villans don’t seem to be finished there, as they are looking to add a central defender this month after Diego Carlos left the club, with plenty of links flying around as to who it will be.

Aston Villa close in on signing new defender

According to recent reports from El Periodico Mediterraneo (via SportsWitness), Aston Villa are going all out to try and sign Villarreal defender, Juan Foyth.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It’s reported that an agreement now being ‘very close’ to being struck after a round of advanced negotiations.

Villarreal are said to be open to a move if they can receive a decent fee for their 27-year-old defender, but the figures of a move are yet to be revealed.Better than Disasi: Aston Villa in advanced talks to sign “quality” star

Juan Foyth for Villarreal.

Foyth – who has already worked under Emery during his time at the Spanish club – has only managed four appearances so far this season, totalling 181 minutes and contributing to one clean sheet in those four games. A knee injury kept the Argentine out for the first half of the season, missing 139 days and 19 games.

How Juan Foyth compares to Axel Disasi

Another defender being linked with a move to Aston Villa is Chelsea centre-back, Axel Disasi, who Fabrizio Romano confirmed Villa are in talks with.

Having been a regular starter last season under Mauricio Pochettino, Disasi has seen fewer minutes under Enzo Maresca, totalling 1,284 minutes, most of those coming in the Conference League.

Disasi

Emery often looks to deploy a higher line, wanting to defend on the front foot and win possession in dangerous areas. Whilst Disasi isn’t completely incapable of this, he is much better suited to defending his own box, which could make Foyth the better option for Emery’s style of play.

When comparing the two defenders’ metrics, you can see Foyth offers more in regards to progression in the build-up, getting on the ball, looking to break the lines and even carrying the ball forward from the back.

Not only this, but his defensive actions per 90 are also superior, making more tackles, blocks, interceptions and winning more aerial duels.

Foyth has also, of course, played in the Premier League before, featuring under Pochettino at Tottenham between 2017-2021. The Argentine manager praised Foyth as a player with “real quality”, labelling him a “clever” defender with lots of potential.

The addition of Foyth would make a lot of sense for Villa, adding a player the manager knows well, who has also played in the Premier League before and can help both domestically and in the Champions League with his experience.

Crawley's unbeaten 69 leads England to nine-wicket win and 2-1 series triumph

England mow down last 33 runs in 5.3 overs for the loss of one wicket on final day

Valkerie Baynes12-Sep-2022

It was only a matter of time for both sides. But for England, it really was a matter of time. Needing just 33 runs for victory over South Africa and a 2-1 series triumph, they had to do it in 64 balls to make this third and final Test at The Oval the shortest since 1912.Related

As it happened, they took 5.3 overs – 28 minutes in all – to achieve the quirky milestone in an extraordinary match, which was only ever going to last three days in total after rain forced play to be abandoned on Thursday without a ball being bowled and Friday’s day of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.Zak Crawley picked up where he had left off, easing his way to an unbeaten 69 to lead England to a nine-wicket win.Alex Lees had been dropped on the first ball of England’s fourth-innings pursuit of 130 and again Kagiso Rabada saw him put down on the third ball of the last day, a thick outside edge sliding through the gloves of Kyle Verreynne behind the stumps as the keeper moved to his left.Lees also evaded Keegan Petersen’s hand, thrust up somewhat tardily at third slip as he appeared to lose sight of the ball at the crucial moment, for four runs off Marco Jansen next over. But Rabada got what was very much a consolation wicket a short time later with a delivery that tailed in and rapped Lees on the thigh, barely drawing an appeal but prompting an understated call for the DRS, which showed the ball to be hitting the stumps.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

When Ollie Pope, whose first-innings 67 made him the only other player besides Crawley to pass fifty in the match, arrived at the crease England needed just 22 runs more.Pope attempted a reverse sweep off Jansen with just five runs needed and was hit on the chin, prompting further delay to the inevitable as he underwent concussion checks.Fittingly, given his rapid passage to a half-century the previous evening – his first time past fifty since scoring a century against West Indies in March, Crawley brought up the winning runs, steering Jansen to the boundary in front of square on the off side.Crawley’s lean record this summer had raised questions over his place in a side that has re-invented itself as ultra-assertive. In cruising to a 36-ball fifty on Sunday, he looked more in the mould, and he carried on that way, confidently clipping Rabada to fine leg for a single on Monday’s first ball as England resumed on 97 without loss, Crawley with 57 and Lees on 32, after bad light stopped play the previous evening. His knock had been almost flawless but for being dropped on 51 when he fired the ball hard at midwicket late on Sunday, so hard that it rocketed through Ryan Rickelton’s hands, onto his chest and to the ground.Crawley faced 57 balls for his knock, but it was Ollie Robinson who was Player of the Match for his 5 for 49 which formed the basis of South Africa’s first-innings collapse to be all out for 118.Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope celebrate the moment of victory at The Oval•Getty Images

Robinson finished with seven wickets for the match as did Stuart Broad, who took 4 for 41 in South Africa’s first innings and a crucial 3 for 45 in their second amid a prolonged display of swing bowling with fellow veteran James Anderson which put England back on top after the tourists had won the second morning.South Africa had contained England’s first-innings lead to just 40 runs, thanks largely to Jansen’s maiden Test five-for, then comfortably moved back into the lead through Dean Elgar and Sarel Erwee. But Broad and Anderson got to work and then Ben Stokes produced a gutsy spell while continuing to battle a long-term knee problem to net three South Africa wickets and, with Robinson’s help, restrict them to 169 in the second innings. In a match that flip-flopped as part of a series that flip-flopped – the sides split the first two Tests which were each decided by an innings – England looked classier as South Africa’s batting line-up struggled for runs, despite making wholesale changes ahead of the final game.”A good first innings helped us at Lord’s, first-innings runs are so big in the UK, and we’ve failed in that department,” Elgar, the South Africa captain, told Sky Sports. “I’ve got to give our bowlers credit, they ran in and did all that was asked of them, but it all boils down to our batting.”Rabada was named South Africa’s Player of the Series for his 14 wickets at 23.35, while Stokes claimed the honour for England as the second-highest run-scorer behind Pope with 149 runs plus his ten wickets at 15.70. Jonny Bairstow, forced out of the third Test by a freak golf accident, was named Player of the Summer.Stokes was full of praise for England’s top-order of Crawley, Lees and Pope, as well as Broad and Anderson.”Important to allow them enough time,” Stokes said before accepting the Basil D’Oliveira Trophy in a subdued celebration out of respect for the nation’s period of mourning for the Queen, who died on Thursday.”The way Popey’s come out and played, he’s shown what he’s capable of, and Zak and Leesy, opening the batting in England is very hard. Don’t underestimate how they set the tone.”It’s phenomenal to have two of the great seam bowlers in your team, two sporting greats, very blessed. They are a huge credit to themselves and this game, and a lot of young players who want to be fast bowlers look up to them.”

West Ham now hold talks to sign new £25m forward with 10 goals this season

West Ham are now in talks with a new forward for Graham Potter as they look to solve their striker crisis at the London Stadium, according to a fresh report.

West Ham chasing forward

West Ham have shown improvement under Potter since he took over in east London, but remain on the hunt for a new forward in the final days of the transfer window.

Mohammed Kudus was deployed as a no.9 in their most recent Premier League outing, a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, underlining the lack of options available to the new manager.

Michail Antonio remains sidelined indefinitely after a car crash, while Jarrod Bowen has a fractured foot and is also unavailable. Summer signing Niclas Fullkrug’s injury misfortune continued earlier in the month too, with the German now set to miss the next three months with a hamstring injury which forced him off just minutes into their FA Cup defeat against Aston Villa.

West Ham and Potter eyeing move to sign "talented" defender over Tottenham

Potter is yet to welcome his first signing at the club…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 26, 2025

One player who they have been strongly linked with is Brighton forward Evan Ferguson, who Potter knows well and handed his debut during his time on the south coast. It is believed that he could be available on loan and several clubs are chasing his signature, but that previous relationship combined with the chance for regular first-team football could give the Hammers the edge.

Multiple forwards could arrive however, given the current shortage in the no.9 spot at the London Stadium. The club have also been in talks to sign Brian Brobbey from Ajax, while a move for out-of-favour RB Leipzig striker Andre Silva on loan for the remainder of the campaign has also been mooted.

Now, a new name has entered the fray, with the Hammers looking beyond the final week of the transfer window.

West Ham in talks over 10 goal striker

That is according to a fresh report from French outlet L’Equipe [Via West Ham Zone], who report that West Ham are in talks to sign OGC Nice forward Evann Guessand.

The 23-year-old striker has found the net nine times in Ligue 1 so far this season, as well as netting in the Europa League, and is regarded as a top prospect in France.

And the report claims that West Ham are “in talks with the entourage” of Guessand over a potential move, with Nice reportedly valuing their striker at £25m, a fee that would be their second highest-ever sale behind Jean-Michel Seri.

However, it is a deal that has been earmarked for the summer rather than in the coming days, with Guessand enjoying a fine season for Les Aiglons and expected to remain there this winter.

“I’m at Nice. The season is ongoing and we have objectives. I am fully focused on my club and the objectives that await us,” said the versatile forward in a recent interview.

There is also thought to be interest from Germany in the talent, but West Ham could be at the head of the queue as things stand following talks.
