What Postecoglou has secretly told his Tottenham squad after Arsenal defeat

A report has shared exactly what Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou told his Spurs squad behind-closed-doors after their disappointing loss to fierce rivals Arsenal on Sunday.

Postecoglou criticised after 1-0 Tottenham defeat to Arsenal

Tottenham’s set-piece record under Postecoglou is a cause for concern among supporters and critics alike, with Gabriel Magalhaes’ winning header from a corner being their 10th goal conceded from a dead ball situation since the Australian took charge last year.

Gabriel rose basically unchallenged to thump his header past the helpless Guglielmo Vicario from close range, resulting in on-lookers theorising why the Brazilian was so free inside Spurs’ penalty area and right outside their six-yard box.

Tottenham actually dominated possession on the day, and created openings of their own, but a lack of cutting edge meant that Gabriel’s header was enough for Mikel Arteta’s side to seize all the bragging rights and all three points.

Brennan Johnson was criticised for his attacking display against Arsenal, with Dejan Kulusevski also questioned by some critics after the Swede and his teammates failed to unlock a resolute Gunners backline.

“I know that, for some reason, people think I don’t care about set-pieces,” said Postecoglou after Tottenham’s defeat to Arsenal.

“I understand the narrative, but we work on them all the time. We held them [Arsenal] well for the most part, but switched off for one and paid a price. They’re obviously a very big threat from set-pieces and it only takes one.

“It wasn’t just [Cristian] Romero, others switched off too. The delivery was spot on and Gabriel is a threat in those situations. We paid a price for it, but you learn from that and you move on. It’s my burden to carry and I’m fine with that.

“For me, it’s about the finer details of us getting to where we want to be — for us, the way forward is to try to turn the football we’re playing into something meaningful.”

The result takes Spurs’ tally to two Premier League defeats, a draw and a single win from their opening four league matches, with Brentford awaiting them next in the top flight this weekend.

Before that, Postecoglou prepares his side to take on Coventry City in the EFL Cup this evening, with silverware long eluding Spurs as supporters hope for a cup run.

What Postecoglou has secretly told his Spurs squad after Arsenal loss

Writing in a detailed piece for The Daily Mail this week, reliable journalist Sami Mokbel shared what Postecoglou has secretly told his Tottenham squad after their defeat to Arsenal.

According to Mokbel, the 59-year-old’s message to his players was clear – that they remain on the right path and to keep calm.

Members of the Lilywhites squad also believe that their performances in these first four league games have offered an improvement on last season’s opening quartet of matches, despite the contrasting results.

There remains real positivity behind the scenes at N17, but that optimism needs to translate into results on the pitch, otherwise Postecoglou will keep feeling the heat.

Birmingham PhoenixCoach: Ben Sawyer
Captain: Amy Jones
Overseas players: Shafali Verma (India), Erin Burns, Katie Mack (both Australia)Significantly weakened by withdrawals of Ellyse Perry, Sophie Devine and Ashleigh Gardner but the signing of Shafali Verma is perhaps the most exciting of the whole competition, on the back of her top-order pyrotechnics against England. Exciting young seam-bowling attack with Central Sparks’ new-ball combination, Issy Wong and Emily Arlott – likely to open the bowling together, while Kirstie Gordon has a point to prove after losing her England central contract.Verdict: Verma can win them games on her own but will need support from the middle order.Possible XI: Shafali Verma, Katie Mack, Amy Jones (capt/wk), Erin Burns, Georgia Elwiss, Evelyn Jones, Marie Kelly, Ria Fackrell/Abtaha Maqsood, Issy Wong, Emily Arlott, Kirstie GordonLondon SpiritCoach: Trevor Griffin

Overseas players: Deandra Dottin (West Indies), Deepti Sharma (India), Chloe Tryon (South Africa)The Knight-Griffin combination that has enjoyed success in both the KSL and the WBBL takes on the Hundred, with a strong top order that should see them score consistent runs throughout. Their bowling attack is a little lighter, with Freya Davies the spearhead, but Knight and overseas players Deepti Sharma and Chloe Tryon offer useful spin options, particularly on slower surfaces, while Charlie Dean is the leading wicket-taker in this season’s Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.Verdict: Strong squad which should be eyeing a top-three finish, especially if the batting line-up clicks.Possible XI: Tammy Beaumont, Deandra Dottin, Heather Knight (capt), Deepti Sharma, Chloe Tryon, Naomi Dattani, Amara Carr (wk), Grace Scrivens/Dani Gibson, Charlie Dean, Freya Davies, Sophie MunroManchester OriginalsCoach: Paul Shaw

Overseas players: Laura Kimmince (Australia), Laura Wolvaardt (South Africa), Jemimah Rodrigues (India)Strong, deep batting line-up but bowling attack looks light on paper and will need either plenty of runs to play with or an unheralded domestic player to step up. Tough calls to make over batting order: should the silky Laura Wolvaardt open or continue at No. 4, where she has batted for South Africa, and will the specialist finisher Laura Kimmince face enough balls to make an impact?Verdict: Batting strength offset by bowling attack’s lack of international quality.Possible XI: Lauren Winfield-Hill (capt), Laura Wolvaardt, Jemimah Rodrigues, Holly Armitage/Sterre Kalis, Laura Kimmince, Alice Davidson-Richards, Beth Langston, Bess Heath (wk), Linsey Smith, Phoebe Graham, Katie LevickOval InvinciblesCoach: Jon Batty

Lacking a star-name England player but Tash Farrant, Mady Villiers and Fran Wilson are all regular squad members and Georgia Adams is pressing for inclusion. New-ball attack of Farrant’s left-arm swing and Shabnim Ismail’s genuine pace should be potent.Verdict: Competitive squad that can challenge for a top-three finish, especially if South African core performs.Possible XI: Georgia Adams, Sarah Bryce (wk), Marizanne Kapp, Dane van Niekerk, Fran Wilson, Alice Capsey, Grace Gibbs, Mady Villiers, Tash Farrant, Shabnim Ismail, Dani GregorySouthern BraveCoach: Charlotte Edwards

Overseas players: Rachel Priest (New Zealand), Sammy-Jo Johnson, Heather Graham (both Australia)Ellyse Villani, Annabel Sutherland and Sophie Molineux’s withdrawals have hit the Rockets hard: veteran keeper-batter Rachel Priest starred in the KSL for Western Storm but Sammy-Jo Johnson and Heather Graham have a single Australia cap between them. But with three of England’s best T20 players in Nat Sciver, Katherine Brunt and Sarah Glenn, they have more than enough talent to overcome those losses and compete for a top-three spot. Expect a fluid batting line-up, with Glenn an option as a pinch-hitting opener.Verdict: Remarkable batting depth and all-round quality of England stars means they should be in contention.Possible XI: Rachel Priest (wk), Nat Sciver (capt), Michaela Kirk, Heather Graham, Sammy-Jo Johnson, Katherine Brunt, Abi Freeborn, Sarah Glenn, Kathryn Bryce, Teresa Graves, Lucy HighamWelsh FireCoach: Mark O’Leary

Overseas players: Hayley Matthews (West Indies), Piepa Cleary, Georgia Redmayne (both Australia)Perhaps the weakest squad in the competition on paper but with enough talent to cause a few upsets: Georgia Redmayne had a dominant 50-over season in Australia, Hayley Matthews comes into the competition on the back of an ODI hundred, and Sophie Luff and Bryony Smith have been dominant in domestic cricket. Sarah Taylor’s return adds intrigue while Piepa Clearly will lead the seam attack with Katie George’s injury meaning she has played as a specialist batter for most of the summer.Verdict: Bowling attack lacks international quality of other sides, while batting isn’t strong enough to compensate.Possible XI: Georgia Redmayne, Bryony Smith, Hayley Matthews, Sophie Luff, Sarah Taylor (wk), Katie George, Georgia Hennessy, Piepa Cleary, Lissy Macleod, Alex Griffiths, Nicole Harvey

Spurs already have a bigger talent than Nwaneri in crazy teen superstar

Tottenham Hotspur are a club with a proud tradition of promoting talented youngsters into the first team before they become international superstars.

For example, the likes of Ledley King, Harry Kane and he who must not be named all played in the club’s youth set-up before getting their chance in the first team and grabbing it with both hands.

That said, it has been a good few years since an academy product has successfully made the jump to first team star, but that could soon change.

Harry Kane scores for Tottenham.

While the media’s attention has been transfixed on Arsenal’s young Ethan Nwaneri, the Lilywhites may have an even more talented youngster on their hands.

Why fans are excited about Nwaneri

Okay, so before we move on to Spurs’ dazzling young talent, let’s examine why there is so much excitement around Nwaneri.

The Hale End prospect first caught the attention of the wider footballing world when, at just 15 years old, he became the youngest Premier League player of all time in September 2022.

However, he wouldn’t play another minute of competitive first-team football until the club’s 6-0 win over West Ham United last season.

Then, he finally made his full debut in the League Cup against Bolton Wanderers last week, in which he scored a brace and generally looked ready to contribute going forward.

Now, his development this season is exciting in and of itself, but it is also his impressive youth record that has led to such hype.

In 52 appearances for the Gunners’ various junior sides, the Enfield-born gem has racked up 27 goals and ten assists, which equates to an average of a goal involvement every 1.40 games.

While it might not be what Spurs fans want to hear, Arsenal have a star on their hands with Nwaneri, but the good news is that the Lilywhites have their own sensational youngster who could be even better.

Football FanCast's In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Spurs' very own Ethan Nwaneri

Yes, it shouldn’t surprise some of you, but Spurs’ tremendously promising academy gem is 17-year-old Mikey Moore.

Like the Gunners’ young prospect, the “outstanding” Lilywhites ace, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has now made five first-team appearances.

However, unlike his potential future rival, he has not been given the opportunity to start, but given how impressive his form has been for the junior sides, his first start is more a matter of when and not if.

For example, in just 33 games for Tottenham’s various junior sides, the “magnificent talent”, as Kulig describes him, has scored 20 goals and provided 15 assists.

This means he’s been averaging a goal involvement once every 0.94 games in the academy, which is a noticeably better average than Nwaneri’s.

Moreover, while the pair have now moved up to England’s U19 squad, they really established themselves as future internationals in the U17 side, and in this age range, once again, Tottenham’s young prospect had the better numbers.

In his 12 games for the team, the Southwark gem scored ten goals and provided four assists, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 0.85 games, while the young Gunner scored 15 goals and provided two assists in 28 games, equating to an average of a goal involvement once every 1.64 games.

Ultimately, both clubs have extraordinarily gifted academy products in Nwaneri and Moore, but if their youth records are anything to go by, then Postecoglou and Spurs fans can rejoice in the fact that they may well have the more talented prospect.

Tom Abell's late-surging 78* off 45 balls takes Somerset to Finals Day

Hosts defeat Lancashire by seven wickets at Taunton as van der Merwe claims 4 for 27

Matt Roller26-Aug-2021

Tom Abell and Tom Lammonby walk off in celebratory mood•Getty Images

Measured, incisive, innovative. Tom Abell looked out of his depth in Somerset’s T20 side three years ago but has transformed himself into one of England’s top uncapped batters in the format and his late-surging 78 not out off 45 balls took them to Finals Day for the first time since 2018.Somerset were 12 for 2 chasing 185 when Abell walked out at No. 4 to make his first county appearance for two-and-a-half months following a hamstring injury and Hundred duty, and he struggled early on. He ground his way to 33 off 27 balls, Lancashire strangling the chase with spin through the middle overs, but his acceleration through the latter stages saw Somerset home with 11 balls to spare. He lofted inside-out over extra cover, swept and reverse-swept, and short-arm jabbed pull shots over the short leg-side boundary, before letting out a roar of celebration after Tom Lammonby scrambled through for the winning single that showed how much it had meant to him.”I wasn’t having much fun in T20 cricket three years ago,” Abell said, “so I had to try and find a role that would suit me which was coming in during the middle overs. I like to play situations. I’m not a big-hitter – I don’t necessarily have that power game that a lot of guys do so I’ve just got to find ways to score.”That’s what T20 is about, you have to score quickly. I’ve got a bit more clarity about my options now so I just try to stick to my strengths. I had the worst net I’ve ever had yesterday but I just tried to stay in the game and take good, low-risk options. I was intent on making sure I saw the game through and it’s an unbelievable feeling which I can’t explain.”Related

Liam Livingstone's travelling roadshow – next stop, Taunton

Abell found support from Will Smeed, whose 44 off 33 included a six that landed on the roof of the retirement flats, and Lammonby, who overcame a slow start of his own to seal the game, putting on an unbroken 102 with Abell for the fourth wicket. He was dropped at midwicket before he had got going and Lancashire will reflect that their fielding might have cost them – though they had the worst of conditions, desperately scrambling around in the dew. Smeed too rode his luck, caught behind off a front-foot no-ball on 12 and dropped at backward point on 30.Lancashire will justifiably feel aggrieved that Abell was there at the end, too. Immediately after he had brought up his half-century, from 32 balls, Luke Wells struck him on the pad with a non-turning legbreak and belted out an appeal that lasted for the best part of 10 seconds. Sky Sports had ball-tracking technology with them which showed it would have slid on and crashed into leg stump but it was not available on-field; Abell hit 26 off his next 12 balls.Dane Vilas, Lancashire’s captain, was frustrated. “Maybe it’s something we could look at in big games like this in the future,” he suggested. “We’ve got all the technology that we’ve used in the Hundred and I don’t see why we couldn’t use it here as well.” He was without a number of first-team players through injury (Luke Wood and Keaton Jennings), international duty (Finn Allen, Jos Buttler and Saqib Mahmood) and Covid-19 (Matt Parkinson) and their absence proved costly, though it was heartening to see Richard Gleeson charging in after a second long injury lay-off.Nowhere does T20 nights quite like Taunton. There were around 7,000 fans in attendance, the first full house here in two years, and the short boundaries and flat pitches mean batters save the date for their games here when the fixtures are released. Mind you, Liam Livingstone appears to have done that with every venue he has played as part of his travelling six-hitting roadshow this summer.Livingstone is the in-form T20 batter in the world and he knows it. He has recently been dubbed ‘The Beast’ and has such a supreme confidence in his ability to clear any boundary in the world at the moment that he lined up the short side from the first ball he faced. He mishit his first two sixes, one landing in the Somerset Stand at midwicket and the other in the River Tone, but his third was a clean pick-up over cow corner that pinged into the balcony of a retirement flat.He was on 25 off 9 balls when Lewis Gregory threw the ball to Roelof van der Merwe and it was The Bulldog who got The Beast. He speared in a 58mph/94kph yorker which Livingstone tried to loft back over his head, but van der Merwe held onto a sharp return catch then celebrated with his nerves bulging and eyes popping out of their sockets. On another night Livingstone might have been entitled to stand his ground and remind the fielding captain that the crowd had gone to watch him bat; not in a knockout game at the Blast’s spiritual home.Roelof van der Merwe roars after taking the wicket of Josh Bohannon•Getty Images

Van der Merwe struck again in his first over, skidding one onto Alex Davies’ front pad, leaving Josh Bohannon – playing his first Blast game of the season with Finn Allen in self-isolation in Bangladesh and Keaton Jennings ruled out with a calf injury – to rebuild with Vilas. But there is hardly time to at the world’s highest-scoring T20 venue: Bohannon was smartly stumped by Tom Banton for a 20-ball 35 after belting Marchant de Lange for consecutive fours through midwicket and Vilas was soon up and running with a pair of sixes. After van der Merwe’s fourth wicket, a stumping that Banton nearly fumbled after Wells ran past one, it was the full toss that proved deadly. Vilas was reprieved after chipping a waist-high one to deep square leg that was belatedly called as no-ball, before Lammonby and de Lange (three times) all struck with him. Rob Jones’ scoop-filled cameo of 38 off 27 dragged them up past 180 but it looked under-par. They managed 50 off the last seven overs and just 11 off the last two and that slow finish cost them badly.

Arsenal’s "top signing" left for free, now he’s outscoring Saka & Trossard

There are a lot of things going very right at Arsenal at the moment, from the action on the pitch to the deals off of it.

Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar have helped to completely transform the club from one that was lingering in midtable mediocrity a few years ago to one that is now fighting for major honours on all fronts.

However, as with all big clubs, the Gunners have been haunted by more than their fair share of former players in the past, including one who left just before Arteta joined, and is currently outscoring Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard.

Saka and Trossard's recent form

It has been a gruelling start to the season for Arsenal this year, with away games against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, and Aston Villa alongside an injury to club captain and chief creator Martin Odegaard. Yet, the Gunners are flying, and both Saka and Trossard are playing marvellously.

In the absence of the Norwegian, the North Londoner’s talismanic number seven has taken over captaincy duties, and so far, he has looked totally unphased by the added pressure, racking up two goals and five assists in just nine appearances, equating to an average of a goal involvement once every 1.28 games.

The Belgian international hasn’t been quite as influential as the Englishman, but he has also stepped up in the wake of Odegaard’s injury, making eight appearances so far, in which he’s scored twice and provided one assist, which equates to a reasonable average of a goal involvement once every 2.66 games.

Leandro Trossard

Overall, both Saka and Trossard have once again shown why they are critical members of this title-chasing Arsenal side this season, yet neither one has scored as many goals as a former Gunner who left the club five years ago.

Danny Welbeck's form this season

Yes, the former Arsenal player in question is none other than Danny Welbeck, who may not have hit the heights some were hoping he would in North London but nonetheless remains a popular figure among the fans.

The Englishman joined the Gunners for around £16m in September 2014 from traditional rivals Manchester United, and hile he certainly showed glimpses of quality for the North Londoners, including that goal against his old club, injuries ruined his chance to establish himself as one of the most important players in the team.

For example, while Rio Ferdinand dubbed him a “top signing,” the Manchester-born poacher made just 126 appearances for the first team in five years, scoring 32 goals, providing 13 assists, and missing a whopping 153 games for club and country.

He moved to Watford on a free in August 2019, where he spent one season before joining Brighton & Hove Albion in October 2020, where he is still plying his trade today, and doing it well.

For example, in just seven appearances for the Seagulls this season, the 33-year-old has scored three goals, provided one assist and generally looked like a brilliant top-flight striker again.

Ultimately, letting Welbeck leave on a free in 2019 was the best decision for all parties. It got him off the books at Arsenal and gave him the chance to rebuild his career, and so long as he stops scoring against the Gunners, he’ll likely remain a popular figure in N5.

Joe Root: 'We could have created nine chances on that surface'

Teams head for Lord’s on Monday all-square after rain wrecks intriguing final day

George Dobell08-Aug-2021Joe Root says England were confident they could have “created nine chances” on the final day at Trent Bridge had rain not intervened.India had nine wickets in hand going into that final day, requiring another 157 runs to win, and there is no doubt they were favourites. But rain forced a complete washout, meaning the first LV= Insurance Test was drawn. But while Root, who was named Player of the Match after making a half-century in the first innings and a century in the second, accepted India were “in the driving seat”, he felt that the pressure of the situation could have played in England’s favour.India were twice bowled out for under 200 in the fourth innings of Tests on their tour of England in 2018. At Edgbaston, where they were set 194, they succumbed to a 31-run defeat, while at Southampton, where they were set 245, they fell 60 short.”At one stage it looked like we could have potentially had 40 overs and I think in that period, it felt like we would have been able to create nine chances on the surface like that,” Root said. “I’d be lying if I wasn’t to say that India weren’t in the driving seat going into today, but we know on a wicket like that, a couple of wickets in a cluster and of course that game can turn on its head.”With the pressures of batting on a fifth-day wicket, things could very quickly have fallen in our favour and we certainly believed that we’d have been able to create nine more chances.”If we’d have been good enough in the field and taken those then we could have been sat here one-nil up, but unfortunately the weather has won. In many ways, the weather’s robbed us all of a fantastic final day of Test cricket, which is a slight shame.”James Anderson is likely to play at Lord’s after his workload was reduced by the final-day rain•AFP/Getty Images

It was intriguing to hear Root use the word “if” in connection to taking chances in the field. England dropped three catches in India’s first innings as well as missing four run-out opportunities to sustain an increasingly modest record in the field. While accepting that such errors were costing England, Root felt the secret to improvement was “calm and belief”.”We certainly put the practice in,” Root said. “We catch a lot of balls in practice. It’s about trying to have an element of calm and trust and belief in your own ability. That can be hard in pressure situations. As a player, you just need to make sure you’re not panicking. You need to remind yourself that you’re doing all the hard yards and making sure that, when the next opportunity comes around, you’re giving yourself the best chance.”Fielding at slip it is such a mental thing. If you can find a way of staying relaxed and trusting your technique, then you’re certainly in a better place to take the next opportunity.”Root was reluctant to discuss selection ahead of the second Test and suggested that Covid protocols could render it tricky to bring in players ahead of Thursday’s start at Lord’s. But Ollie Pope, who is close to full fitness after recovering from a quad strain, could well win a recall, with Dan Lawrence and Zak Crawley both sitting uneasily in the side. Haseeb Hameed could also push for selection. As for players outside the current squad, there is a case for recalling Moeen Ali as a spin bowling all-rounder. England didn’t play a spinner at Trent Bridge but they could include Moeen, who has made five Test centuries and claimed almost 200 wickets, to help balance the side. Chris Woakes, who has an outstanding record at Lord’s, is unlikely to be considered as he recovers from a heel injury but is expected to be available for the third Test in Leeds.Related

With England’s seamers having enjoyed a relatively light workload – there were only 14 overs bowled in India’s second innings – there are no obvious reasons to rest and rotate ahead of the Lord’s match, so it seems James Anderson and Stuart Broad will retain their places. It was noticeable, however, that Root often preferred Ollie Robinson to Broad at key moments and he subsequently hailed his new seamer’s performance as “brilliant”.”I thought Ollie bowled extremely well,” Root said. “He’s got a unique set of attributes. He has a very high release point and he makes things happen. He makes the ball nip around and his accuracy in this game was exceptional. He managed to do a brilliant job. He showed what he is very capable of doing at this level. In two Tests he has shown everyone how skilful he is.”With none of his colleagues having managed a score higher than 32, however, Root accepted there was “a lot to work on” ahead of the next game.”After our first innings, we were well below par,” he said. “250 on there would have been par. There’s a lot to work on. We know there are areas we need to be better: we need to take our chances in the field and we need to make big first-innings runs.”Both sides travel to London on Monday and are expected to train at Lord’s on Tuesday.
