Maddison repeat: Spurs want to sign "sublime" £20m Son rival

There are less than two weeks until the Premier League returns, and while every club has a lot to pay for, that feels especially true for Tottenham Hotspur.

The North Londoners enjoyed a mostly successful first season under Ange Postecoglou that ended in Europa League qualification, but with the teams around them strengthening, they need to get back into the Champions League next season.

To do that, Daniel Levy and Co need to provide the Australian with some fresh talent to improve the first team and reinforce the squad.

Luckily, that appears to be happening, as the latest player touted for a move to N17 this summer would be an excellent rival for Son Heung-min. Interestingly, he also has something in common with last summer's marquee signing, James Maddison.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report in Wednesday's print edition of The Chronicle via Leeds United News, Tottenham are interested in signing Norwich City star Jonathan Rowe.

The report claims the Lilywhites have been keeping tabs on the young winger for months and could rival Daniel Farke's side for his signature in the coming weeks.

However, just because he's playing in the Championship doesn't mean he'll be cheap to sign, as the Canaries supposedly value him between £15m to £20m.

It might not be the most eye-catching transfer, but Levy and Co should look to secure Rowe's services, as he'd be a great option alongside Son next season, and he has a couple of similarities with Maddison to boot.

Why Rowe would be a brilliant signing

Okay, so before we look into his statistics from last season that make him an appealing option to rival Son on the left wing, let's take a quick look at his similarities to Maddison.

The main one is that, like the Spurs midfielder, Rowe has caught the attention of the wider footballing community for the first time at Norwich City, wowing fans with his skill and trickery.

The North Londoners may have signed their number ten from Leicester City last year, but the Foxes picked him up from the Canaries in June 2018, when the Norfolk side were in the Championship.

The other similarity is that, like the former Foxes man, the Westminster-born talent made his debut for England's U21 side while playing at Carrow Road, and based on his performances last season, we wouldn't be surprised to see him win a senior cap should he make the move to N17.

So, with that cleared up, let's look at his form from last season. In 38 appearances for the Canaries, the "sublime" attacker, as dubbed by content creator HLTCO, scored 13 goals and provided four assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 2.23 games.

This obviously can't match Son's remarkable return of 17 goals and ten assists in 36 games last season, but it would have been enough to make him the second most productive player in Postecoglou's squad by goals and assists.

Granted, the Championship is not the same level as the top flight, but given that he's still just 21 years old, it's a positive indication that he could be a quality option to bring off the bench when Son's tiring or even to start in place of the South Korean when he needs a rest.

Ultimately, Rowe is not a signing who's going to join the team and immediately displace the captain, but he's proven that he can be a handful for defenders, and while £20m is not cheap, it could prove value for money in the long run if he can go on to develop into Son's successor on the left.

Therefore, Levy and Co should do what they can to get ahead of Leeds and bring the talented winger to North London this summer.

Bargain: Newcastle could land Murphy upgrade by signing £13m sensation

With Newcastle United working tirelessly to secure a new centre-back before the transfer deadline on August 30th, it’s unclear how much money they will have to work with to try and improve the forward line.

Journalist Keith Downie confirmed on Wednesday that the club would have limited funds available for a new right-sided attacker should they complete a deal for Marc Guehi which could set them back up to £65m including add-ons.

However, the emergence of talks for a deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba could allow the club to have more funds available, with the Burkina Faso international potentially costing the Magpies around the £43m mark.

England defender Marc Guehi

It could allow Eddie Howe to dip into the transfer market to finally end their hunt for a new wideman, but as it stands there is no glaring obvious candidate to come in and provide an upgrade on the current options.

However, the club could revisit an old transfer target to provide Howe with an upgrade on one talent currently plying his trade at St James’ Park.

Jacob Murphy’s time at Newcastle

After arriving on Tyneside in a £12m deal from Norwich City back in the summer of 2017, winger Jacob Murphy joined the club with expectations of the attacker providing a ray of light during a dark time on and off the pitch for the Magpies.

He failed to make an immediate impact, being shipped out on two separate loan spells to Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom, before becoming a regular first-team squad member back in 2020.

He’s since made 137 appearances for the club in that four-year spell, registering three goals and seven assists in the Premier League last season – his best spell in the black and white of Newcastle.

Murphy has been an excellent squad member for Howe, providing a consistent presence in the first team despite their recent struggles with injuries across the board.

However, with the club looking for another push towards Champions League football, they may have to make harsh calls to try and give Howe the best opportunity to take the club back to the heights they hit in 2022/23.

Why Chiesa would be an upgrade on Murphy for Newcastle

Over the summer, Newcastle have been linked with a whole host of attacking talents to try and improve Howe’s forward department.

Federico Chiesa is just one player who has been touted with a move to Tyneside, with the Italian allowed to leave Juventus this summer after being left out of Thiago Motta’s first squad of the 2024/25 campaign.

Only a couple of years ago, the 26-year-old was lighting up Euro 2020, finishing the tournament as one of the hottest prospects in European football.

However, the Magpies now have the opportunity to sign Chiesa for as little as €15m (£13m) – with the Italian side desperately looking to offload the forward before the end of the window.

He would be a huge upgrade on Murphy, with his stats certainly proving that he would be a better option than the Englishman off the right side for Howe’s side.

The “unstoppable” Italian, as described by former international teammate Giorgio Chiellini, managed to register more combined goals and assists than the Newcastle ace, whilst also averaging more successful take-ons, showcasing his talent in the final third.

He also averaged more shots and shots on target than Murphy – demonstrating his talents at being able to get shots off trouble the opposition, potentially allowing the Magpies to further increase their goalscoring tally this season.

Juventus forward Federico Chiesa.

Whilst it would be harsh to replace Murphy after being such a reliable member of the side, the game waits for nobody and if the club are to return to Champions League football, they must recruit elite level talents.

Chiesa would be exactly that for Newcastle, with his excellent ability in the final third handing Howe’s side with the perfect opportunity to mount a push for the Premier League’s top four.

Matthew Wade and rain frustrate Western Australia's final hopes

Tasmania were reduced to 3 for 59 during the morning session but did not lose another wicket

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Apr-2021

Matthew Wade, rain and then bad light frustrated Western Australia’s attempts to make the running in a match they need to win to reach the Sheffield Shield final.Victory against Tasmania would secure them a place in the decider later this month against either New South Wales or Queensland, but a draw is no good so time lost is a problem. Their ambitions were also hit when the in-form Joel Paris, who had claimed two early wickets, was unable to bowl again following one over after lunch due to a groin injury.Western Australia had made a strong start in the morning session after choosing to bowl, reducing Tasmania to 3 for 59, but an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 123 between Wade and Jake Doran blunted their efforts. They were able to include captain Mitchell Marsh and allrounder Ashton Agar in their side but did not find room for Josh Philippe who had been named in the 14-man squad. For Marsh it was his first Sheffield Shield match since October 2019 and just his second first-class outing since the 2019 Ashes Test at The Oval.Marsh and Agar were among seven bowlers used but were unable to add to the early inroads.Left-armer Paris picked up where he left off in the previous outing against Victoria, where he scored a century and took a five-wicket haul, when he found the edge of Jordan Silk from round the wicket in ninth over.Debutant Tim Ward, who had been handed his cap by Tim Paine, shaped up well in his first innings until being undone by a good spell from Cameron Gannon and edging to slip.Paris then struck a second time when Caleb Jewell nibbled at one outside off stump and was smartly held by Shaun Marsh at second slip. However, after sending down the opening over of the second session he did not return.Western Australia would still have had hopes of advancing the game significantly, but Wade and Doran showed that the surface held few gremlins. For large parts of the afternoon the run rate hovered around two an over as either side tried to claim the advantage.Wade brought up his half-century from 135 balls with a hooked six off Mitchell Marsh during an over that cost 11 making it the most expensive of the day.Rain arrived early in the final session and though it cleared to allow a brief resumption, during which Doran went to a 152-ball half-century, the umpires soon decided that the artificial lights had overtaken natural light too much to continue.

West Ham now one step away from signing "great" £19.5m Paqueta partner

Attempting to round off a fruitful summer of transfers in style, West Ham United are now reportedly one step away from signing a midfield reinforcement who'd be the perfect partner for Lucas Paqueta.

West Ham transfer news

West Ham have been one of the busiest clubs in the Premier League this summer, handing Julen Lopetegui several additions ahead of his first campaign in charge. Welcoming the likes of Crysencio Summerville, Niclas Fullkrug and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the Hammers should be well-placed to pursue European qualification once again this season – once they've put their opening-day defeat against Aston Villa behind them.

However, they may not be done there on the transfer front following links to Joe Gomez, Raheem Sterling and Paris Saint-Germain's Carlos Soler. After earlier reports suggested that the Hammers were pushing to sign the PSG midfielder, a fresh update has emerged.

According to Foot Mercato, West Ham are now one step away from signing Soler in a deal worth €23m (£19.5m) as the transfer window nears deadline day.

Late move: West Ham keen on "exemplary" star who'd send Zouma packing

Hammers still looking to replace Zouma with right footed defender

ByConnor Holden Aug 24, 2024

The Spaniard has reportedly been shown the door at the Parc des Princes, allowing West Ham to swoop in, with the fact that he was left out of their most recent matchday squad against Montpellier only adding fuel to the fire.

A player of similar calibre to Lucas Paqueta, and not only would Soler be the perfect partner for the star man at the heart of West Ham's midfield, but he could even replace the Brazilian.

PSG player Carlos Soler

Paqueta, of course, is reportedly awaiting punishment for breaching betting rules, which could result in a hefty ban, as we saw last season in the case of Ivan Toney. Perhaps preparing for that day, West Ham may yet welcome Soler before deadline day.

"Great" Soler can partner Paqueta

For now, whilst Paqueta remains without a ban, Lopetegui could form quite the partnership in the middle of the park for his West Ham side. The Spaniard reportedly appreciates Soler's profile and would undoubtedly play a large part in helping the midfielder return to his best form, which initially earned PSG's interest at Valencia.

A player who can replicate Paqueta's ability to progress play and create opportunities on the ball, the Brazilian's work could be halved if Soler arrived in the next week.

Described as "great" during his time with Valencia by analyst Ben Mattinson before he struggled for minutes at PSG, Soler arguably needs West Ham as much as they need him before deadline day this summer. If they can secure his signature in a deal worth the reported £19.5m, they may yet land one of the bargains of the window.

Pressão do Vila

Voltou e marcou!

Contudo, a assistente Maíra Mastella anulou o lance.

The dew was setting in, and it would have been difficult to get Ashwin back later if the ball had got wet or if he had right-hand batters to bowl to. Rishabh Pant, though, went to Marcus Stoinis, who conceded 15 in that over, and Ashwin ended the night without bowling his quota in what turned out to be a close defeat. The move didn’t make much sense to those watching nor to the Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting. “That’s certainly something that we will talk about when I get a chance to sit down with the team,” Ponting said at the post-match press conference. “He had bowled beautifully. Three overs, none for 14. Hadn’t even conceded a boundary. Look he had a disappointing game in game one, but he has worked really hard in the last few days to make sure he adjusted and got things right in this game. I thought he bowled beautifully tonight. Probably a mistake on our behalf, and something we will be talking about later on.”Something else that Ponting and the Capitals will be talking about is the sheer number of “slot balls” they gave to Chris Morris in the last two overs, who in turn hit four sixes to run away with a game that had looked like it was in the Capitals’ bag. Until the start of the 15th over of the second innings, there hadn’t been a single six hit in the game, but the Rajasthan Royals hit seven in the last 4.4 overs to make it home.Despite conceding only 14 from his three overs, R Ashwin didn’t bowl out•BCCI

Morris might have missed out on a couple of these when the Royals lost to the Punjab Kings chasing 222, but he managed to connect enough of them to sink the Capitals.”We probably gave him a few too many easy balls, a few too many slot balls if you like,” Ponting said. “The length wasn’t quite where it needed to be. If you look at the replay of the game, if you bowled a reasonable yorker, he didn’t score off them. If it was back of a length, sort of, above stump high, he didn’t get hold of them either, especially with pace on the ball. We talked about how to bowl to him, but the execution probably wasn’t there.”It is not entirely a coincidence that the errors increased as the dew set in. “The other thing you have got to factor in is just how wet and how dewy the ball was in the second innings of the game,” Ponting said. “It wasn’t easy for the bowlers to grip. You could see it at the end there. There were a few full tosses that fast bowlers bowled with the ball slipping out of their hand a little bit. That’s part and parcel of IPL cricket. We knew coming here that there will be a little bit of dew in the second half of the game. And we didn’t adapt, and we didn’t execute as well as we could have tonight.”Till around the 13th-over mark in our bowling innings, the second innings of the game, everything was going according to plan. We made a few errors coming in the last four or five overs of the game. When you are a little bit off against any team in the IPL, just bowl a couple of bad balls or just a couple of those here and there, it is quite often the difference in the outcome. We didn’t get things right at the back end tonight.”
