Newcastle United enjoyed another successful campaign in front of goal, with the club scoring the fourth-most goals in the Premier League during 2023/24.
However, the club failed to secure a second successive season of European football, finishing seventh, three places lower than the season prior in the top flight.
The defensive department has prevented the Magpies from any further success, with numerous different injury problems seeing Eddie Howe's side conceding 29 more goals in the league than they managed in 2022/23.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe
The club have already tried to combat their failings from last season, signing centre-back Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer from Bournemouth, and reuniting the defender with Howe after their stint together at the Vitality Stadium.
However, despite their recent issues at the back, Howe’s side are still eyeing reinforcements in attacking areas to allow the likes of Isak to reach the next level in their hunt for Champions League football.
One player has caught the eye, potentially being the perfect alternative to a talent the club have been chasing in recent weeks.
Newcastle interested in signing young attacking talent
According to Wednesday’s edition of Corriere dello Sport, via Sport Witness, Newcastle are battling Leicester City and Aston Villa for the signature of Juventus forward Matias Soule this summer.
Aston Villa transfer target Matias Soule in action for Frosinone.
Steve Cooper’s side have already had a €25m (£21m) bid rejected for the Argentinian youngster who scored 11 and registered three assists in his 36 appearances on loan at Frosinone last campaign.
The report goes on to state that despite the Foxes bid, they are willing to part ways with the 21-year-old, should any side present a bid in the region of £33m during the off-season.
He could potentially form an excellent partnership with another potential addition to Howe’s squad, in the form of Lille striker Jonathan David.
David, who also has interest from fellow Premier League side Chelsea, finished the campaign as the league’s joint-second top scorer, with only new Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé scoring more goals.
Canadian striker Jonathan David
It's evident that the Magpies want to improve in attacking areas, with Soule & David undoubtedly being brilliant additions to the club’s already impressive forward line.
However, Soule would be more suited to the right-wing position, a role that has been troublesome for Howe in recent months, proving to be a better addition than another star who’s previously been linked with a move to St James’ Park.
Why Soule would be the perfect Bowen alternative
In recent weeks, journalist Ben Jacobs confirmed the club still have multiple players on their shortlist, with West Ham United star Jarrod Bowen just one player the Magpies are targeting this summer.
A deal for Bowen would undoubtedly be an expensive one, with Julen Lopetegui’s side holding out for a fee in the region of £100m to part ways with the 27-year-old.
Jarrod Bowen for West Ham United
As a result, the club may turn their attention to Juventus’ Soule, with the youngster the perfect alternative to the Englishman for Howe’s side.
When comparing the “Messi-esque” youngster as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, to Bowen, it’s clear the Juventus talent would be a better addition, especially when factoring in his price tag.
Whilst contributing with fewer combined goals and assists in 2023/24, he’s dominated the pair in numerous other key areas that would improve Howe’s side.

The Argentinian ace has averaged more progressive carries, whilst also completing nearly four times more progressive passes demonstrating his ability to drive. It's hardly a surprise, therefore, that he's been hailed for his "supernatural dribbling" by journalist Antonio Mango. Meanwhile, his ability to find a key pass could allow players such as Alexander Isak – and David if he signs – to reach the next level.
He’s also completed four times more take-ons, showcasing his ability and desire to beat the opposition, something which Bowen simply can’t match, with Soule evidently a more direct option for the Magpies.
With Newcastle aiming to push for another European charge this season, it’s vital Howe signs the right players to make an immediate impact on his Newcastle side.
Given his young age, Soule still has the ability to develop further should he move to Tyneside, but he also provides the fanbase with a talent who will be able to deliver excitement to the already impressive squad at St James’ Park.
Newcastle can forget Bowen & Elanga by signing "world-class" target
The forward has been told he’s free to leave this summer.

PCB’s High Performance Director calls spinner’s actions “irresponsible and damaging”

Raza Hasan gets instructions from Jamal Anwar•PCB
Pakistan left-arm spinner Raza Hasan, who once played a pivotal role in a win against Australia in the 2012 World T20, has seen his career set back sharply once more after being expelled from the Quaid-e-Azam trophy for breaching Covid-19 protocols. According to a PCB release, the 28-year old left the bio-secure hotel where his team, the Northerns 2nd XI, was based. Nadeem Khan, the PCB’s High Performance Director, called his actions “irresponsible and damaging”.The PCB has set up bio-secure hotels for both the Quaid-e-Azam trophy teams as well as the second XI sides, with players forbidden from leaving the premises without seeking express permission from the medical staff as well as the High Performance department. Hasan, it appears, did not attempt to obtain clearance from either, which has landed him an effective ban for the rest of the season.”It is sad and unfortunate that despite several reminders and educational programmes on the significance and importance of respecting and following Covid-19 protocols, Raza Hasan decided to take matters in his hand and overstepped the line,” Nadeem Khan said. “As such, he has been expelled from the tournament and will not be allowed for the remaining season.”The PCB has a zero-tolerance approach towards Covid-19 breaches as these are designed to not only ensure health and safety of all participants but to also demonstrate to the world that we can successfully organise and deliver domestic competitions.”I sincerely hope Raza Hasan will use this time to reflect on his irresponsible actions and the potential damage his breach could have caused to the event in general and Pakistan cricket in particular.”This is the latest incident in a career that began promising so much, but has so far too long appeared on a path of self-destruction. After making his debut as a 19-year old in T20 cricket in 2012, Hasan was picked for the T20 World Cup, where he memorably returned figures of 4-0-14-2, against Australia removing both Shane Watson and Glenn Maxwell in a Man-of-the-Match performance. Consistency, as well as discipline, however, eluded him, and in 2015, he was banned for two years for testing positive for a prohibited substance. He was given an opportunity to return when Lahore Qalandars snapped him up in a draft ahead of the 2018 PSL. He played two games without making an impact, or indeed taking a wicket. He was let go after the season, and has been a regular in the Northerns 2nd XI side this season, without quite delivering the standout performances that might hint at a career anywhere near as promising as the one he looked set to have in 2012.
Coach says defeat is part of bigger picture as South Africa strive to close the gap

South Africa have a considerable amount of catching-up to do to reach the same white-ball standards as a team like England, according to their coach Mark Boucher.Speaking after South Africa failed to win a match in a home T20 series for the first time in the format’s history, Boucher acknowledged that England are in a different class when compared with other teams.”England are step ahead of, not only us, but quite a few different teams in world cricket,” Boucher said, after the team’s defeat in the third T20 at Newlands. “We’ve got a way to go. If you look at this England team, when they got together probably in around 2017, they were also asking a lot of questions of themselves trying to find a balance that was going to suit their style of play. These guys have won a World Cup and are oozing with confidence. Their players are a lot more developed than what our players are. Our job is to get our guys in our team feeling what these guys are.”Boucher and his support staff’s work has been made many times more difficult by the almost nine-month period of inaction forced upon the national team by the coronavirus pandemic, and its effects on team selection, both of which left South Africa “exposed” in certain areas.”We didn’t have allrounders due to various reasons so we lacked a sixth bowler. You can’t hide behind that. Sometimes in T20 cricket, you’ve got a bowler who goes. And most teams, especially a team like England, tend to fancy a particular bowler on one night and you need a bit of cover for that individual, and we haven’t been able to do that,” Boucher said.Dwaine Pretorius and Andile Phehlukwayo have both been unavailable for selection for this series which forced South Africa to field XIs made up of specialists. They opted for a six batsmen-five bowler split, which meant they had no alternative but for each bowler to deliver a full quota of four overs. In the first match, they tried to use Heinrich Klaasen for an over of part-time spin, which backfired, while in the second, Lungi Ngidi was costly and in the third, Lutho Sipamla and Tabraiz Shamsi leaked runs, but South Africa had no-one else to attempt to apply the brakes. While Boucher was mostly satisfied with the team’s batting efforts, he lamented the lack of a left-hander, with David Miller also unavailable for this series. “Maybe (we could also have had) a left-hander in the middle-order, especially to a legspinner like Adil Rashid who turns the ball in to the left-hander. It showed in the England batting line-up how valuable that can be,” he said.Despite the forced absence of some first-choice players, Boucher insists South Africa are beyond the trial phase of their T20 World Cup preparation and want to fine-tune rather than figure out their overall squad. “We haven’t been experimenting. We’ve been using the resources that we’ve had,” he said. “We’ve had a couple of unfortunate circumstances that caused us to play combinations that we knew were not correct but we had to do it. We want to get into a situation where we are solid on a T20 squad.”He also defended the team’s demonstration of their new aggressive, but smart, style of play, which has yet to be fully explained. It seems to suggest a more proactive approach to shorter formats than is usual for South Africa, who tend to err on the side of caution. Boucher said he felt the team showed signs of clever thinking, even though it didn’t always work in their favour.ALSO READ: CSA will apply affirmative action in hiring coaching consultants”I do think they were smart. We were thrown a couple of curveballs,” he said. “A smart decision would be to play six bowlers but the balance of the side wouldn’t have worked out. On the field, I like the core group of guys to make decisions, and they made those decisions. We continuously talk about smart decisions and what we felt we did right and what we felt we could do better. We want to keep growing.”In the first two games, we were smart, we just didn’t play the big moments that well. If you look at the games, it came down to one or two overs that cost us. That’s just big moments that we didn’t play as well as England did and hence the results. The first two games were a lot tighter than people may think. This game not so much. I thought we had enough runs. We just didn’t execute with the ball and England are a powerhouse side and they are going to punish you.”Balking at the big moments has often been a criticism levelled against South Africa, but that’s not something they can dwell on right now. Rather than a close scrutiny of what they didn’t do in this series, Boucher hopes his squad can apply a wide lens to this series and see it in the context of their rebuilding process and the summer ahead, as they look to close the gap between themselves and teams like England.”Days like today are tough because we haven’t won,” he said. “We will try and encourage the guys that they need to trust the bigger picture. There are a couple of hard lessons being learnt at the moment but we are not going to quit. We are here for the long haul.”
ABERTO

Celtic have less than two months left to bring in any additions they want to make to the squad before the summer transfer window slams shut.
The Hoops are reportedly confident of securing a permanent deal to sign Irish forward Adam Idah from Norwich City on a permanent deal, following his loan spell at Parkhead last season.
Brendan Rodgers' side are also said to be in talks over a swoop to bring back Paulo Bernardo on a permanent transfer, after his loan stint from Benfica.
The Scottish Premiership champions are now reportedly looking at another potential signing to bolster their options in the middle of the park.
Celtic eyeing up young midfielder
According to Football Scotland, the Scottish giants are keen on a deal to sign central midfielder Jakub Kaluzinski from Turkish side Antalyaspor.
The report claims that the Hoops have been keeping tabs on the Polish starlet for a long time, predating back to his spell with Legia Gdańsk in Poland before his move to Turkey.
It states that a deal to sign the 21-year-old maestro would cost around £3.5m and that Spanish side Real Valladolid have already tabled an offer, which means that the Bhoys may have to move quickly if they want to sign him.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers looks on.
Therefore, it remains to be seen whether or not the Hoops can get a deal over the line for the young talent. However, if they can then they could secure a dream upgrade on Tomoki Iwata in midfield.
Why Celtic should sign Jakub Kaluzinski
The Japanese midfielder emerged as an option for Rodgers in the number six role during the second half of last season and provided a platform from which the likes of Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, Bernardo, and Matt O'Riley were able to build.
Kaluzinski, however, is six years younger than Iwata and his form during the 2023/24 campaign suggests that he would already offer more to the team.
The 21-year-old ace, who has been described as a 'big talent brewing' by Scouting Polska on X, is an athletic midfielder who can provide reliability in possession whilst also putting himself around on the field to win duels.

As you can see in the table above, the Polish gem provided his team with more creativity, with more key passes and 'big chances' created, than Iwata at league level last term.
He also won more duels and came out on top in the majority of his aerial contests, which suggests that the £3.5m ace could add more steel to Celtic out of possession in the number six role.
Kaluzinski also averaged 4.9 ball recoveries per game in comparison to Iwata's 3.7 and this shows that he can sweep up play to win the ball back more frequently in midfield.
Overall, these statistics indicate that the Hoops transfer target could come in as an upgrade on the Japan international, whilst also having six extra years on him to continue to develop and improve, which is why the club should push to sign him.
Celtic set to pull off "miracle" as £4m+ sale of forward expected
The Hoops are reportedly set to cash in on the rarely-seen attacker this summer.
