Six players signed from ’emerging’ pool as franchises hunt for young talent before draft

Jayden Seales and Nyeem Young have signed CPL deals with Trinbago Knight Riders and Babardos Tridents respectively following impressive campaigns in the U-19 World Cup.Seales and Young were among 20 players in a pool of ’emerging’ cricketers named by CWI at the start of March, and have both been signed by their native teams.Kimani Melius, another member of the West Indies squad at that competition, has signed for St Lucia Zouks, while Kevin Sinclair has joined Guyana Amazon Warriors. St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and Trinbago each opted to retain one of their emerging players from last season: Dominic Drakes and Amir Jangoo respectively.ALSO READ: Nyeem Young, the diamond from Barbados’ Gold CoastYoung, a 19-year-old, seam-bowling allrounder from Barbados, had previously targeted a place in the Barbados squad, telling ESPNcricinfo in January that it was his “next aim” following the tournament. “Barbados are a bit like Mumbai Indians in the IPL,” he said. “So many good players that they can field three teams.”Seales, who took 10 wickets in six games at the tournament, was picked out as a future star by Tom Moody after the tournament.”He’s got some terrific skill already to his armoury, and got genuine pace for an Under-19 kid,” Moody said. “But he gathers pace off the wicket, which I like…which tells me he’s got a very good wrist. He snaps through his wrist, which is a bit like Pat Cummins does very, very effectively.”According to the CPL’s regulations, each squad must contain two players from the ’emerging’ pool, who must play a minimum of five games between them. There are six vacant emerging player spots, which will be filled at the draft. Jamaica Tallawahs are the only franchise yet to sign an emerging player.”There is so much cricketing talent across the Caribbean and we want to make sure that our tournament plays its part in creating the next generation of West Indies stars,” said Pete Russell, the tournament’s chief operating officer. “We were delighted with how well these young players did in 2019 and we are really excited to see this group of talented cricketers during the 2020 tournament.”Emerging player signings:Barbados Tridents – Nyeem Young Jamaica Tallawahs – none Guyana Amazon Warriors – Kevin Sinclair St Kitts and Nevis Patriots – Dominic Drakes St Lucia Zouks – Kimani Melius Trinbago Knight Riders – Amir Jangoo, Jayden Seales
The second season for Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager has been very disappointing, to say the least. It was a successful first term in charge for the Dutchman, who took his side to a Carabao Cup win, and a third-place finish in the Premier League.
However, this time around has been far more underwhelming for the Red Devils. They currently reside in sixth place in the Premier League, on 54 points, and are now mathematically out of the running for European football. Not only that, they crashed out of the Champions League at the group stage, and the 15 goals they conceded are the most by any Premier League side in the groups.
With such poor form, it has led to talk of manager Ten Hag getting sacked by United’s new owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who might well decide to move forward with a new face at the helm of the INEOS era.
Of course, this has led to plenty of speculation about who could get the job, should Ten Hag indeed get sacked at the end of the season. Several names have been banded around, including England manager Gareth Southgate, and Bayer manager Thomas Tuchel, who will be leaving the club in the summer.
However, one other name is floating around of late, who is currently managing in the Premier League and could well be the man to take over from Ten Hag.
Man Utd should look at appointing Premier League boss
The manager in question is Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, who has had a wonderful first full season at Villa Park. They are currently in fourth place, seven points clear of fifth place Tottenham, and have a Europa Conference League sem-final to look forward to.
The 52-year-old was appointed by Villa in October 2022, taking over from Steven Gerrard, who had a disastrous spell at the club. Last season, Emery dragged the club from relegation-threatened to Conference League qualification in a matter of months.
In April, Villa triggered a one-year contract extension clause in Emery’s contract, to keep the Spaniard at the club until 2027, with Bayern sniffing around and potentially looking at Emery as their next manager.
However, United might still need to approach Emery to take over at Old Trafford. Former United and Villa striker Dwight Yorke thinks that it would be a good appointment, saying in an interview this week that the Spaniard might “do even better than Erik ten Hag, Mikel Arteta or Jurgen Klopp”, should he get the United job.
Yorke further stated: "It won't surprise me to see Emery's name linked with the big clubs in the summer. He has a point to prove at the top clubs because of how his time ended at Arsenal."
How Emery could work at Man Utd
Yorke's quote certainly suggested that Emery's time at Arsenal left a lot to be desired. Since he left Arsenal, Arteta has taken the team to new heights, playing his exciting and high-pressing 4-3-3 system which now sees them challenging for a title.
Emery, though, is famed for his 4-2-2-2 system at Villa, and has helped them to the brink of Champions League qualification. That would be a remarkable accomplishment when you consider where the Midlands side were upon Emery's arrival.
It may not have gone well for him in north London but he has now proven himself as one of the best managers in the Premier League. Further boasting an impressive title haul that includes a Ligue 1 title and four Europa League trophies, he can certainly one-up Arteta when it comes to winning honours. Perhaps there might be some credence behind the idea that he'd take United further than Arsenal over the forthcoming years.
Champions League football would undeniably be a stellar achievement for Emery at Villa given they were a side threatened by relegation last season and it certainly feels like he needs to take the next step to fulfil his legacy as a legendary manager. Should United decide to sack Ten Hag this summer, Old Trafford could well be the place to go. After all, he has already proven he can steady a ship in deep decline. This could be the perfect project.
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery.
Having perfected the 4-2-2-2 system at Villa Park, he would perhaps look to implement that system at Old Trafford, too. United certainly have some players who would fit Emery's Villa system well, although they would undoubtedly need to strengthen in a couple of areas of the side, too.
Kobbie Mainoo would be excellent under Emery, with the 19-year-old midfielder having superb ability in the first phase, thus being crucial in the build-up pattern the Spaniard employs, which involves triangles between the centre-back, full-back and midfielder on each side.
Not only that, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount would excel in the central role, in which the players essentially start as wingers, before tucking inside at two number 10s in possession and helping progress the ball through the middle of the pitch.
Manchester United player Mason Mount
Finally, Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford could certainly work as the two centre-forwards in Emery’s system, who are tasked with drifting out wide to receive the ball and drive into the penalty box. This is something Rashford could do particularly well, as he plays his best football when receiving the ball out wide and driving into the penalty box.
One area United would need to strengthen is at centre-back, and they would have to target quick and agile players to fit into the high-line Emery employs at Villa. Statistically, Villa catch the most players offside per game in the Premier League, with 4.7 per game.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.
However, this also comes with the risk of opponents exploiting lots of space in behind if they beat the offside trap. The likes of Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof may well struggle to cope with the demands of this, so United should look to recruit at centre-back.
Certainly, Emery’s system is one of the best to watch in the Premier League this season. United’s lack of suitable centre-backs, plus depth needed in midfield, would mean they are not immediately ready should he take over at Old Trafford. With that being said, it could certainly be a shrewd appointment for the Red Devils.

Still time for batsman to rebuild trust says captain
Andrew Miller04-May-2020Eoin Morgan, England’s white-ball captain, says the “door is still open” for Alex Hales to earn a recall to the T20 World Cup squad, but only if he can rebuild the trust that was lost when he was axed from last summer’s 50-over World Cup squad for failing a second test for recreational drug use.Prior to his fall from grace, Hales was a member of the England side that reached the final of the last T20 World Cup, in India in 2016, and had been a key player throughout the 50-over team’s rise from ignominy after the 2015 World Cup – including a then-record 171 against Pakistan in 2016 and another century in England’s world-record 481 for 6 against Australia two years later.Having previously stated that he was targeting an England return for the 20-over World Cup in October and November, Hales demonstrated his enduring value as a T20 batsman with impressive stints for Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash and Karachi Kings in the PSL prior to the Covid-19 outbreak.ALSO READ: Fines doubled but 21-day ban scrapped as ECB update recreational drug policiesHowever, he has not been considered for England selection since March 2019, and speaking at the launch of the Abu Dhabi T10, which is scheduled to take place after the T20 World Cup in November, Morgan reiterated that Hales would be required to rebuild that lost trust before he could be included in any future international plans.”In terms of what that looks like, practically, it’s human nature, it’s about developing trust,” Morgan said. “I don’t think you can put a time limit on gaining back that trust, and that’s not just with me, that’s with every member of the squad, the backroom staff, the selectors.”And that does take time. We’re in May, so it’s 11 months ago that the incident happened with Alex, so it’s actually not that long ago that it happened.”What happened was actually quite considerably harmful to the environment, which obviously led to the breakdown in trust between Alex and our players, so to say, how long that will take to regain, we don’t know, but certainly the door is still open for that trust to be built back up.”Hales’ hopes, however, are likely to be hit by the lack of opportunity to impress in the build-up to the tournament.Eoin Morgan congratulates Alex Hales after his half-century in the T20 Blast quarter-final•AFP via Getty Images
The ECB have been in discussions in recent weeks with the government and other sports over the feasibility of events taking place in bio-secure environments, and on Tuesday Tom Harrison, the chief executive, will appear before the Department of Culture, Media and Sport select committee to discuss the board’s findings.Morgan added that England’s players were due to be briefed by the ECB later on Monday, to be brought up to speed with the latest developments. But, with the season already postponed until July 1 at the earliest, he conceded that the ECB was likely to prioritise its two Test series against West Indies and Pakistan, and that his white-ball squad may have to “make do” with whatever opportunities come their way.ALSO READ: Harrison faces DCMS select committee to discuss Covid-19 impact”For the last month, everybody has struggled to get a sense of what’s possible and what might or might not happen,” Morgan said. “But the news in the last week has been more positive about sport returning than it has been in the previous three weeks.”There was a stage when the idea of playing any sport over the next four or five months seemed impossible, but so long as the options given are government-approved, it seems a lot more likely that there might be some cricket. I’ve not given up yet!”With doubts about the feasibility of Australia’s ODI and T20I tour in early July, England’s likeliest chance of international opposition ahead of the T20 World Cup could be to repurpose their three ODIs against Ireland in September, and play T20Is instead.”We have to make do,” he added. “If Tests were going on, there would be ways and means we could have meaningful practice games in and around those Ireland games in a similar environment.”We could have proper opposition and maybe use the England Lions there too in order to make it as highly competitive as possible.”However, given the current uncertainty all around the world, he insisted that all teams would be in the “same boat” going into October’s tournament.”I think if the T20 World Cup goes ahead in the slot that it’s been allocated at the moment, we will have certainly have played a limited amount of cricket before then,” he said.”One of the big positives before the outbreak of the virus was that the guys were going to play all of the Pakistan league, all of the IPL, all of the T20 Blast, and get a lot of exposure to T20 cricket in the build-up and hence lots of opportunity for positions.”But I think given the circumstances, we’ll have to wait and see how much cricket we play and the opportunities that land on guys’ laps. They’ll have to make the most of them because they are very limited ones at the moment.”

Chelsea's spending over the last couple of years under Todd Boehly has been excessive, to say the least, with the American desperate to see his club return to the top end of the Premier League.
The Blues have since splashed over £1b on new signings, with the club breaking the English transfer record in the process by signing Moises Caicedo for an eye-watering £115m.
Whilst there's no denying the club were in desperate need of an overhaul, the number of signings was certainly excessive, putting the club in potential financial trouble, recording £90m losses for the previous financial year.
As a result, the club will have to operate in a smart manner whilst still needing to improve the squad if they are to have any ambitions of finishing within the Champions League positions next season.
However, despite the huge investment in recent times, one player who cost the club absolutely nothing has nailed down a starting role under Mauricio Pochettino and excelled in recent matches, including against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Trevoh Chalobah's stats vs Nottingham Forest
After various injury problems at right-back, academy graduate Trevoh Chalobah has often been the man to fill the void, despite primarily being a central defender.
Trevoh Chalobah
The meeting at the City Ground on Saturday was no different, despite Malo Gusto and Reece James being on the bench, the 24-year-old starring on the right-hand side of Pochettino's defence.
Chalobah kept Callum Hudson-Odoi quiet for large spells, with the former Blues winger scoring after the defender switched to a central role upon the introduction of Gusto.
With Forest needing a point to secure survival, the Blues had to weather the storm before being able to clinch victory, with Chalobah making five clearances and winning one tackle as he prevented the Reds from claiming the result they needed.

Despite his solidity without the ball, the centre-back was just as composed on it, completing 69 passes at a completion rate of 95% and managing 89 touches, as he produced a cool and calm display to secure a third successive win for the Blues.
As a result of his recent flurry of starts under Pochettino, the 24-year-old has seen a sharp increase in his market value – seeing him valued at more than one of the club's big-money signings.
Trevoh Chalobah's market value in 2024
No one could have anticipated Chalobah's recent success in Chelsea's first-team, but it's brilliant to see another product of the Cobham academy excelling at Stamford Bridge.
It's seen his value skyrocket to £17.8m, as per Football Transfers, a value that is £1.8m higher than winger Noni Madueke, whose value has dropped significantly since his £30m move to the club last January.
Noni Madueke
They've both had a purple patch in recent weeks, the latter notably registering four goal involvements in as many games. Meanwhile, the "fantastic" Chalobah, as described by former boss Thomas Tuchel, scored a brilliant header in the victory over rivals Tottenham Hotspur just a couple of matches ago.
In recent times, Chalobah has been linked with a move away from the club and potentially following the likes of Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi who both left Stamford Bridge before excelling at various other sides.
Although they need to raise funds in the summer, Pochettino and Boehly must avoid allowing a third young English centre-back to leave, with Chalobah having the ability to be a key player in the club's revival in the years ahead.

The UK government has confirmed that two county friendlies will be used as pilot events to stress-test the return of fans to sporting venues. As revealed by ESPNcricinfo, a limited number of spectators – likely to be county members initially – will be allowed to attend pre-season fixtures in order to trial the government’s guidance on the return of fans to elite sporting events, with a view to reopening all venues for fans with social-distancing measures in place from October.Surrey’s two-day friendly against Middlesex starting on July 26 is set to be one pilot event, and several other counties have arranged pre-season fixtures which could be open to a limited number of fans.In a statement, Surrey said they were “looking forward to working with the government to enable a limited return of members to The Kia Oval next weekend”.
