Tim Paine is 'almost our most important player' – Justin Langer

Australia’s coach sees no reason why Paine won’t remain Test captain until at least the end of this WTC cycle

Tim Paine has been backed to captain Australia until at least a possible World Test Championship final appearance in 2021 after leading the team from the fallout of the Newlands ball-tampering scandal to the brink of a clean sweep of this season’s Tests following the retention of the Ashes last year.Paine produced one of his most influence performances in Melbourne, scoring a momentum-seizing 79 in Australia’s first innings and then claiming eight dismissals in a faultless performance with the gloves including a superb stumping to remove Henry Nicholls. The Sydney Test which starts on Friday marks the last in which Steven Smith is not eligible to be Australia captain, with his leadership ban finishing at the end of March, although his has not been the only name associated with taking the armband when it does move on from Paine, with Pat Cummins’ credentials continuing to grow.Australia’s next Test assignment is a two-match series in Bangladesh in June before the 2020-21 season which includes the heavyweight four-match contest against India. Australia and India are currently strongly placed to be in the Test Championship final at Lord’s in mid-2021 with head coach Justin Langer seeing no reason why Paine – who he termed “almost our most important player” – can’t be the man in charge should that come to fruition.”Truthfully, I can’t see one reason why he wouldn’t,” Langer said. “His last game – you judge on his last performance – he was probably pushing to be Man of the Match. He had eight dismissals, 70-odd with the bat, and the way he played his innings was what was most exciting. The way he leads the group. I just literally can’t think of one reason at the moment, he’s so fit, as to why he wouldn’t keep playing for as long as he wants to or needs to.”Retaining the Ashes in England – something Australia had not done since 2001 – was a hugely significant achievement for a team that had been through huge turmoil in the preceding year. However, at the start of the home season, there was a sense of uncertainty about what would happen next year – partly due to Smith’s availability as captain from March 2020 and also a perception that Alex Carey is making a strong case to be part of the Test team – but any questions about the medium-term leadership now appear to have been put to bed.”The truth is there’s been conjecture from outside, there’s never been one millisecond of conjecture from within our team,” Langer said. “I said at the start of the summer, he’s almost our most important player, because he’s a very good leader, his captaincy is excellent, he’s the best wicketkeeper in the world, he’s as fit as anyone in the group and we knew that if he believed he could bat as well as we think we can then you’ll see results like we did in the last Test and at times during the Ashes.”There’s always a bit of conjecture, but certainly not within our camp. I hope he plays for as long as he possibly can because his leadership has been brilliant, working with the leadership group, I love working with him.”Tim Paine plants a kiss on the Ashes urn at The Oval•Getty Images

Langer acknowledged the stark contrast between where the team sits now and a year ago when they entered the Sydney Test against India under huge scrutiny following defeat in Melbourne, and they would go on to be taken for over 600 across the first two days of the Test and be made to follow on before rain forced a draw.”The feeling in the camp is unbelievable but the trick is to maintain it,” Langer said. “The Australian cricket team in the past has been able to do [that], hopefully I can be sitting here in 12 months’ time again with a smile on my face… continue building this great momentum that’s happening in Australian cricket at the moment. It didn’t feel like it 12 months ago.”The immediate aim for Paine and Langer is to secure victory at the SCG, which would give Australia their first sweep of a home summer since 2013-14. The selection decision to be made is whether to find a place for the uncapped legspinner Mitchell Swepson on a surface that is expected to take turn, but two days out the likelier route was for an unchanged team with some additional workload for Marnus Labuschagne.”It’s certainly an option,” Langer said. “That’s how we have to look at it – we’re talking about finding another allrounder in Australian cricket – well it might give us an opportunity to bowl Marnus and Travis Head a few overs, to find those extra overs we’re looking for.”Every time Marnus gets the ball in his hand, it’s pretty exciting. He’s working hard on getting his lines right, so he makes them play a bit more, but he’s an exciting prospect, the way he spins the ball, and the more he can bowl in games that’s important.”It will be hard to make changes, that said I think it’s really important that we wait because we’ve seen it in the Shield games and the groundsman is telling us he’s expecting it to spin, so we have to respect that. We’ll wait and see over the next two days what the wicket looks like.”Josh Hazlewood was back bowling in the nets on Wednesday as he recovers from the hamstring injury he sustained in Perth but is set to return to action through the BBL before the one-day tour of India.

Aston Villa could run riot if Emery unleashes 8/10 menace alongside Bailey

The 2023/24 season has been very successful for Aston Villa so far, who sit fifth in the Premier League.

After Unai Emery’s appointment in October 2022, he has improved his side by leaps and bounds, ensuring Europa Conference League qualification last season, via a playoff round.

The Villans have been excellent in the Conference League so far this season, winning five out of eight matches they have played, whilst scoring 16 goals and keeping three clean sheets along the way.

They are now set to face Lille across two legs in the quarter-final, with the French side set to provide stern opposition for Villa. Les Dogues are currently fourth in Ligue 1, just four points of second-place Brest.

With lots of competition for places in this Villa side, it will be fascinating to see who Emery picks. In particular, there are lots of options out wide.

Most recently, Leon Bailey and Morgan Rogers were selected by the Spaniard, although there is one other option who could be deserving of a start on Thursday at Villa Park.

Aston Villa's underrated option

The man in question is Moussa Diaby who is currently in his first season with Aston Villa. The 24-year-old winger joined the club from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, in a deal rumoured to be worth £51.9m, a club record fee for Villa.

In his first season in the Premier League, Diaby has scored five goals and seven assists in 31 games, although he has played just 1,725 minutes, which equates to 19 full games in total. 12 goal involvements in that time is not a bad return in the slightest, although he has struggled to cement his place in the side.

However, Diaby has registered four goals and assists in his last six Premier League games, including an assist apiece against Luton and West Ham, and a goal and assist against Wolves at Villa Park.

This is somewhat down to the superb form of Leon Bailey. The Jamaican has scored eight goals and assisted eight goals so far in the league, although he has failed to register a goal involvement in his last five games. As such, perhaps the Frenchman should be unleashed on this occasion.

Both wingers play in the same position, although Bailey’s superb carrying ability arguably gives him the edge. The 26-year-old is one of the most direct wingers in the Premier League, and, according to Fbref, he averages 4.62 progressive carries and 2.47 successful take-ons per 90 minutes this season, which place him in the 76th and 81st percentile respectively for wingers in Europe's top five leagues.

In comparison, Diaby averages 3.88 progressive carries and 1.54 successful take-ons per 90 minutes, ranking him in the 61st and 45th percentile respectively, as per Fbref.

Aston Villa forward Leon Bailey.

Moussa Diaby's Conference League exploits

Given the more direct nature of Bailey, it is not necessarily hard to understand why the Jamaica international starts over Diaby for the most part. However, the latter has been in much better form of late, and this extends further than the Premier League.

Aston Villa’s most recent Conference League victory came against Ajax, a superb 4-0 thrashing at Villa Park. Ironically, both Bailey and Diaby scored, but it was the Frenchman’s performance that really stood out, with his goal in the 81st minute capping off a wonderful performance from the Villans.

Diaby played behind striker Ollie Watkins with Bailey on the right against Ajax, and his performance caught the eye of many onlookers. He picked up an 8/10 rating from Birmingham Mail’s Aston Villa correspondent John Townley in his post-match ratings. Townley explained Diaby “was a menace for the Ajax backline and looked confident throughout the 90 minutes”.

Aside from his goal, which capped off his performance, Villa’s number 19 created two chances and completed both of his dribbles, as well as winning 4/6 of his ground duels, showing desire and tenacity off the ball, as per Sofascore.

It could well be the case that Diaby’s excellent Conference League performance last time out, plus his work in the Premier League, is rewarded by Emery with another start against Lille on Thursday.

Aston Villa winger Moussa Diaby.

The last two times Diaby and Bailey have started together, Villa have won, 1-0 against Wolves and that memorable 4-0 win over Ajax. Certainly, if the former Arsenal boss can figure out a way of fitting both into the same team, it is something that could be a massive benefit to Villa.

Aston Villa’s 7/10 ace has now made himself as undroppable as Watkins

The Aston Villa ace will be the perfect replacement for Douglas Luiz.

Lahore welcomes Bangladesh as Pakistan look to end T20I rut

Pakistan have lost eight of their last 10 T20Is, including a series defeat to Sri Lanka last October

When a bowler bowls 140-plus, nobody can ignore him – Haris Rauf

Big pictureThe sight of Bangladesh players walking down from their chartered aircraft at the Allama Iqbal Airport in Lahore, late on Wednesday evening, was an assuring sign for cricket lovers from both countries. Not too long ago, the tour was nearly called off after the BCB stuck to their position of only playing T20Is, while Pakistan sent a fresh proposal of only Tests. But it all changed dramatically when, over the course of a meeting in Dubai last week in the presence of ICC chairman Shashank Manohar, the two parties reached a deal. Bangladesh are on the first of three legs of touring Pakistan over the next three months, this time to only play the T20Is.Bangladesh will be without Mushfiqur Rahim, who opted out of the tour due to his family’s concerns, while five members of the coaching staff have also been excluded from the travelling party. It has unquestionably made Bangladesh a lesser side, with added responsibility on Tamim Iqbal and captain Mahmudullah. Bangladesh have an experienced pace attack to call upon, but lack a genuine spinner. The batting line-up has form, but needs careful organising and reshuffling.Bangladesh performed admirably in the T20Is in India in November, where only a sensational Deepak Chahar spell stood between them and a famous series win. The same cannot be said about Pakistan, however. They have lost eight of their last ten T20Is, including a series defeat to Sri Lanka at home in October last year.In the need to improve their record, the coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq has included some newcomers like Amad Butt, Ahsan Ali and Haris Rauf, as well as veterans Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik to beef up the batting line-up.Form guidePakistan LLLLL (last five completed matches, most recent first)Bangladesh LLWWWIn the spotlightSixteen wickets at a strike-rate of exactly ten, economy rate of 6.89 and 11.56 bowling average in the BBL has not only landed Haris Rauf a place in the Pakistan T20I side, but his tape-ball to BBL story has made fans quite excited to see him bowl at home.Mohammad Naim’s 81 against India in Bangladesh’s last T20I made heads turn, and he followed it up with an impressive BPL campaign for Rangpur Rangers. Naim, too, is a virtual unknown in Bangladesh cricket, but fans have noticed the youngster’s unassuming strokeplay.Team newsPakistan are going with a whole host of changes from the side that last played a T20I. Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik and Shaheen Afridi are likely to return while Ahsan Ali and Haris Rauf are set to be handed T20I debuts. Three places would obviously open up in the absence of Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Amir and Haris Sohail who don’t feature in the squad.Pakistan (possible): 1 Ahsan Ali, 2 Babar Azam, 3 Mohammad Hafeez, 4 Shoaib Malik, 5 Iftikhar Ahmed, 6 Imad Wasim, 7 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 8 Shadab Khan, 9 Haris Rauf, 10 Shaheen Afridi 11 Mohammad HasnainBangladesh’s team management will have a tough time replacing Mushfiqur Rahim, and maneuvering the five openers within the line-up. Coach Russell Domingo said a few days ago that many of them may have to bat out of position, although the bowling line-up is likely to be similar to the one that faced India in November.Bangladesh (possible): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Mohammad Naim, 3 Afif Hossain, 4 Liton Das (wk), 5 Mahmudullah (capt), 6 Soumya Sarkar, 7 Mahedi Hasan, 8 Aminul Islam, 9 Shafiul Islam, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Al-Amin HossainPitch and conditionsThe brownish wicket is projected to be a belter, giving the chasing side enough of an advantage to go after even a 200-plus total. The weather forecast seems perfect, with a high of 17 degrees.Stats and trivia This will be only be the second T20 to be played during the day at the Gaddafi Stadium in the last six years. Only Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah have played in Pakistan from this current Bangladesh side. Mohammad Hafeez, who has made a comeback into the Pakistan T20I side, is 92 runs short of 2000 T20I runs, while Shadab Khan is four scalps away from 50 T20I wickets.

Fabrizio Romano shares new Man Utd update on "great manager" who INEOS like

Manchester United fans have been handed an update on their managerial search as the season approaches its climax.

Time up for Erik ten Hag?

It has been a disappointing second campaign for Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford technical area. His side finished bottom of their Champions League group and sit sixth in the Premier League, almost certain to miss out on Champions League football next season.

The Red Devils could be a contender to sign the Premier League “monster”.

ByDan Emery Apr 17, 2024

Meanwhile, his tactics and transfers have both been questioned and speculation remains that he may be let go this summer as part of the INEOS shake-up since Sir Jim Ratcliffe took charge in February.

That could depend on the FA Cup, where they face Coventry City in the semi-final before a potential final against one of Chelsea or Manchester City. Failure to lift silverware could well cost him his job. Now, a fresh update has been provided on one of his potential successors.

Romano shares Man Utd update on Graham Potter

Now, an update on Graham Potter's potential arrival at Old Trafford should Ten Hag be let go has emerged. The Englishman is out of work and recently turned down the Ajax role as he waits for the right opportunity, which he may perceive Manchester United as. It would certainly be a drastic change from previous Red Devils bosses tactically.

During his spells at both Brighton and Chelsea, Potter tended to opt for a 3-4-2-1 formation, with two creative forwards behind the striker which he used to good effect on the south coast, though his spell in west London was one to forget.

Graham Potter as Chelsea manager

Despite that, he still had the support of his players, with defender Kalidou Koulibaly dishing out high praise for the Englishman.

“Graham Potter is very good at communicating with everyone. And he doesn’t care if you cost £100m or £20m, he will treat you in the same way. That’s the mark of a great manager.”

Potter's spell at Stamford Bridge in particular may leave Manchester United fans wary of any potential appointment though, and thus the latest update from Fabrizio Romano could come as music to their ears.

That is because, despite previous reports claiming that talks for Potter to take the helm at Old Trafford this summer had taken place, the transfer guru claims that no such talks have been held and that United have opted against approaching him so far.

"At the moment, they haven't made contact with Graham Potter, Gareth Southgate or Julian Nagelsmann, from what I understand", Romano told GiveMeSport.

"INEOS know Graham Porter very well because they wanted him at Nice. For sure, he is a manager who is appreciated, but it doesn't mean that they appreciate the same manager for Nice and Manchester United.

"They didn't make recent contact with Graham Potter for the Manchester United job, from what I understand, so that's the situation around him."

Though liked by INEOS, at the moment it appears to be business as usual at Old Trafford, at least until the end of the season.

3) Atlético-MG – 80,00%

Avishek Dalmiya becomes youngest president of CAB

Former BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya’s son Avishek became the youngest president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) at the age of 38, after being elected unopposed on Wednesday.BCCI president Sourav Ganguly’s elder brother Snehasish Ganguly, a former Bengal batsman, is the new joint-secretary, a post that was vacated by Avishek before his elevation. The CAB president’s post was lying vacant after Sourav Ganguly took over the reins of the BCCI last year.Sourav Ganguly to deliver Dalmiya lecture in March

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly will deliver the Jagmohan Dalmiya lecture in March, new CAB president Avishek Dalmiya announced on Wednesday. The Jagmohan Dalmiya Annual Conclave will be held on the eve of the third India-South Africa ODI at the Eden Gardens scheduled for March 18.
Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith had delivered the lecture last year.

However, Avishek will go for a cooling-off period from November 6, 2021 as per the rules in the constitution. Avishek became the 18th president of CAB, taking charge of the same chair where his father sat in his two terms from 1992-93 to 2006 and then from 2008-09 till his death on September 20, 2015.”Right from my childhood, I always heard my father saying ‘Eden is a temple of worship’. That sentiment will run with me always,” Avishek said in his first address as CAB president. “He was very passionate about Eden Gardens. It was really emotional that I could sit in this room. I will only be a fool if I compare myself with any of the former CAB presidents. Their statures were different.”Snehasish recalled his playing days after taking charge of the office.”It was a dream to play for state and I played for 10-11 years,” Snehashish said. “Yesterday, I was really emotional remembering my playing days. Now as an administrator, we have got a very young team and we are confident to take Bengal cricket forward.”With India set to host two global events – the 2021 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup – in three years’ time, the priority for the new CAB president would be to renew the Eden Gardens lease with the Ministry of Defence.”The renewal of lease of Eden Gardens is due in a couple of years. It takes a lot of time to put things in right perspective. We would initiate the process soon,” Avishek said. “Earlier it was for 15 years. With the two global events coming up, we don’t want the issue to be racked up before a global tournament.”The CAB is also planning to introduce an eight-team women’s club league and code of conduct for players.”We want to have women’s club league with eight clubs. We also want to introduce code of conduct of players and support staff. It’s necessary to maintain discipline,” Avishek said. The idea of introducing a code of conduct comes in the wake of the controversy surrounding Bengal quick Ashok Dinda who was found abusing bowling coach Ranadeb Bose earlier this season, which later cost him a place in the squad.Avishek addressed the media interaction with his five-member team of Snehasish, joint-secretary Debabrata Das, treasurer Debasish Ganguly and vice-president Naresh Ojha.

West Ham are being rinsed by 5 ft 9 flop who earns 3x more than Aguerd

West Ham United have made some clangers in the transfer market over the years, and despite streamlining the strategy under David Moyes, there have been some big misses over the past several years.

The London club have, to be fair, enjoyed three successive seasons in European competition and won the Europa Conference League last year, Jarrod Bowen springing through Fiorentina's high line in the dying embers of the final, latching onto Lucas Paqueta's threaded pass, to score and send a proud club into rapture.

Jarrod Bowen with the Europa Conference League trophy.

Both players have been signed under Moyes' eye and indeed there have been a wealth of impactful additions over recent years, but punctuated within are several unquestionable clangers.

Perhaps the worst of the lot, Kalvin Phillips' costly loan spell in east London, initially so promising, has devolved into the stuff of nightmares.

Why West Ham signed Kalvin Phillips

This season, West Ham rebounded from a 2022/23 campaign that had seen silverware conquered but domestic results display the true measure of the squad's standing, and when Declan Rice was sold to Arsenal in a record £105m move, there was heightened pressure to bring in influential players.

But Moyes succeeded and West Ham enjoyed some fine early-season form to cement and sustain a position in and around continental-qualifying contention in the Premier League, the likes of Mohammed Kudus, James-Ward Prowse and Edson Alvarez superb after signing.

Phillips didn't join the ranks until January, signed on loan from Manchester City after starting just two top-flight fixtures in a season-and-a-half following his £45m transfer from Leeds United, where he had made his name.

While it hadn't worked out with the champions, the established England international had been described as a "monster" by one-time Crystal Palace star Yannick Bolasie for his feats at Elland Road and, still now, ranks among the top 18% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 11% for passes attempted and the top 8% for aerial wins per 90, as per FBref.

How much Kalvin Phillips has cost West Ham

The Guardian, when covering the news, revealed that the Hammers had agreed to cover the entirety of Phillips' earnings at Manchester City; he earns a pretty penny but his core qualities appeared to have won Moyes over.

Kalvin Phillips for West Ham

But it's not just financial cost that has affected the Irons, with Phillips embroiled in a protracted run of mistake-filled performances that have only lowered his stock, with commentator and host Tom Rennie branding him a "disgrace."

Still, the fact that Phillips earns a pay packet of £150k each week at Manchester City and Moyes' side is covering the scale of it is hardly a depiction of cash well spent, actually marking him as the joint-highest earner at the London Stadium.

When the 5 foot 10 Phillips' time at West Ham wraps up in June, he will have cost the club over £3m in wages. His salary actually sees him take home three times the earnings of Nayef Aguerd, who has had his detractors in recent times but joined from French club Rennes for £30m in 2022 and is one of the highest-profile stars on the books.

Moreover, given that The Guardian reported that the Premier League champions demanded a £7m loan fee, it can be concluded that the total outlay for Phillips' services stands at around £10m. That's after half a year of duty.

It's an abominable loan signing and while Phillips has some high-level latent ability somewhere within, he simply hasn't offered a slice of the skill set that once earned him acclaim and he might just be the worst signing of Moyes' tenure.
