The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which oversaw the reappointment of Ravi Shastri as head coach of the India men’s team, wants to have a say in picking his three assistants too.The CAC has written to the BCCI expressing its desire to be involved in selecting the batting, bowling and fielding coaches, even though the senior selection panel, currently headed by MSK Prasad, is empowered to choose them as per the board’s new constitution.All three CAC members – former India captain Kapil Dev, former India opener Anshuman Gaekwad, and the former India women captain Shanta Rangaswamy – have signed the letter, which reasons that the task of picking the three assistant coaches should be given the same importance as the selection of the head coach, and to that end, the CAC’s opinion should be taken on board. ESPNcricinfo understands that Shastri could also be consulted before finalising the three assistant coaches.”Yes, we should have a say,” Kapil said during the announcement of the head coach, in Mumbai on Friday. “If you ask me, we have a recommendation to the board from the three of us and [we have asked for it] to put in black and white in the minutes [that] it is not right if we are not doing that job also. We [have] given a letter to the board.”When asked if the CAC should exclusively be entrusted with the responsibility of selecting the support staff – as was the case with the head coach’s appointment – Kapil disagreed.”No, including [both the CAC and the selection panel],” Kapil said. “There should not be a communication gap. Their (the selectors’) strength and our strength is the same for the team; we want to make sure that team should get benefited, and that’s what we wanted. During the previous appointment procedure of the head coach and his support staff, in 2017, the CAC at the time – Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman – also recommended to the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) that Zaheer Khan (bowling consultant) and Rahul Dravid (batting consultant for overseas Test series) come on board. The CoA said these weren’t official appointments, and that the CAC hadn’t been empowered to make them. In the end, following the recommendation of Shastri himself, the BCCI appointed Sanjay Bangar (batting), Bharat Arun (bowling) and R Sridhar as his assistants.Now, the BCCI will forward the CAC’s letter to the CoA ahead of the interview process for the three assistant coaches, which will take place next week, tentatively from August 19 to 22.The process of selection of the head coach and remainder of the backroom staff began last month with the BCCI putting out an advertisement to invite applications. The board had stated in the advertisement that Shastri and the rest of the existing coaching staff comprising Bangar, Arun and Sridhar would get automatic entries during the recruitment process.Former chief selector Vikram Rathour and former Mumbai and India batsman Pravin Amre are understood to have also thrown their hat in the ring for the role of batting coach, while Venkatesh Prasad is among those vying for the job of bowling coach.

Chelsea’s recent spending in the transfer market has followed a strategy of buying anyone that looks promising.

Since the arrival of Todd Boehly, the Blues have spent just over £1bn over four transfer windows, which is far more than any other club in the Premier League.

However, their league position doesn’t reflect that, nor has it justified the heavy spending, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side sitting in tenth place after 25 games.

Chelsea have overspent on plenty of players in recent times, but there’s one player that has seen his value drop significantly in such a short time frame.

This time last season, Romeo Lavia was regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in the Premier League, with his former coach, Arno van den Abbeel, saying:

“I think in that position (holding midfielder), he is one of the best in the world of his age group."

Southampton signed the Belgian star from Manchester City in the summer of 2022 in a deal worth £14.5m, and in his first Premier League season, he started 26 matches, but he was unable to help inspire his side to safety.

With the Saints succumbing to relegation, plenty of clubs were interested in snapping up the 20-year-old after his incredible debut season, with Liverpool being the main competitor to Chelsea.

However, his time at Chelsea hasn’t exactly gone according to plan thus far, and not because of his own doing.

Lavia’s current market value

Last summer, Chelsea spent a huge £58m to secure the services of Lavia after the 5 foot 11 midfielder had the experience of just one season. However, he hasn’t even had the chance to live up to that price tag.

The former Citizen has featured in just two matchday squads all season, with the defensive midfielder playing just 40 minutes of football, which came in Chelsea’s 2-1 home victory over Crystal Palace.

Injuries have completely ruined his start to life under the Argentine, picking up four of them already. This has seen him miss 26 matches this season, with his return against the Eagles being tarnished by another long injury that hasn’t seen him feature since.

These setbacks and his lack of action on the field have caused his estimated worth to fall off a cliff, to the point where he’s now valued at around €15m (13m), according to CIES Football Observatory – £45m less than what Chelsea paid for him just last summer.

However, the club did overpay for the Belgium international originally, as just two months before his arrival, he was estimated to be worth €32m (£27m) – as per Transfermarkt – which is less than half of what they paid for him.

This has arguably been an even worse deal than the signing Mykhaylo Mudryk, with the Ukrainian still said to be worth around €60m (£52m), after signing for roughly £88.5m last year.

Although the costly winger is perhaps seen as Chelsea's biggest flop and for being "absolutely useless," as per talkSPORT's Gabriel Agbonlahor, he has at least contributed this season to some degree – unlike Lavia – with four goals and three assists in all competitions.

In truth, it’s incredibly difficult and even harsh to judge the former Saints prospect based on his time at Chelsea, but from the Blues perspective, it has been a hugely unsuccessful signing so far. Fingers crossed that this is just a run of bad luck for Lavia, and his career isn’t hindered by injuries.

Hailed for his "individual brilliance" by commentator Steve Bower, Nunez only took 21 touches but popped up when it mattered most, making one clearance and one interception too, as per Sofascore.

Averaging a goal contribution every 82 minutes, the 24-year-old is flowering into a world-class striker. He's not there yet, but he's just delightful and a real menace for the opposition.

While Klopp will be with his talisman, Nunez isn't the only ace to have caught the eye, and given that concerns have been raised after Ibrahima Konate pulled up with an injury in the second half, Jarell Quansah's composed display was a big relief for Liverpool.

Another professional display from Quansah is especially important given Konate trundled off the pitch with a suspected muscular injury.

Of course, more clarity is sure to arrive imminently but with Manchester City making the trip to Merseyside on Sunday the 21-year-old defender, who was playing in League One for Bristol Rovers this time last year, could find himself partnering Virgil van Dijk in a truly pivotal showdown.

It wasn't Quansah's finest performance; he was culpable for one or two moments of unease and struggled against the press several times. But, with the stakes raised, he produced yet another performance to underline his credentials as a first-team regular in this brilliant Liverpool side.

Completing 94% of his passes and taking 94 touches, only Andy Robertson saw more of the ball than Quansah, who also won eight of his 12 ground duels and made four tackles and clearances apiece.

He also succeeded with three of his four attempted dribbles, and while that in itself is not a bad thing, he might find some ardent instructions from Klopp in sticking to the basics against the predatory Erling Haaland on Sunday.

Sunday. Manchester City will indeed clash with Klopp's side at Anfield and victory for the hosts would open up a four-point gap.

Achieving such a result would be, in no uncertain terms, a remarkable, season-defining result, confirming to any who still doubt this team's faculty for success that Klopp might get the ultimate send-off before he steps down in the summer.

Sparta Prague have been dispatched and barring something extraordinary, Liverpool's advancement to the quarter-finals is something of a formality.

The Reds will hope and pray that Konate's withdrawal was nothing more than a precautionary measure, that any discomfort felt is forgotten about tomorrow.

Should the worst be confirmed? Well then it's not perfect, is it? But it never is, and Liverpool find a way. Quansah will be up for the task.

Flamengo, Fluminense e Federação de Futebol do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (FFERJ) se reuniram na tarde desta quinta-feira para novo debate sobre a presença de público nas finais do Campeonato Carioca. O Rubro-Negro e a federação voltaram a se mostrar a favor da volta dos torcedores para o jogo, enquanto o Tricolor se manteve contra. Para o duelo deste sábado a operação já está definida como portões fechados.

Nesta reunião, uma representante da vigilância sanitária reafirmou a proibição de público por decreto, apesar da liberação dos jogos de futebol no Estado. Entretanto, a sensação de quem estava presente é que há chances de uma mudança para o segundo confronto, no dia 22, às 21h05, quando o mando de campo será do Flamengo.

A novela deve seguir nos próximos dias, já que, em nota, a Secretaria Municipal de Saúde do Rio de Janeiro afirmou que vai avaliar a possibilidade de público. O Flamengo trabalha para que haja 30% de pessoas de volta ao Maracanã. Na decisão da Libertadores, por exemplo, a Conmebol conseguiu a liberação para convidados no estádio.

Vale lembrar que ao longo da pandemia os clubes levam alguns convidados para os jogos, mas o Flamengo tem chamado a atenção pelo número elevado de pessoas. O Fluminense também costuma ter dirigentes e funcionários no setor conhecido como Maracanã Mais.

Fluminense e Flamengo fazem o primeiro jogo da final neste sábado, às 21h05, no Maracanã. A discordância nos bastidores vem desde o ano passado, quando houve atrito não só pelo retorno em meio à pandemia mas também por transmissão das partidas.
