Having so far struggled to source defensive options amid an injury crisis this season, Newcastle United are now reportedly eyeing a move to sign a long-term target who could provide backup for Sven Botman.

Of course, Newcastle are reportedly walking a finer line than in previous windows when it comes to Financial Fair Play in the Premier League. According to The Premier League's profit and sustainability rule states that clubs are only entitled to a loss of £105m across three seasons. In that time frame, Newcastle sit at £155m, though costs towards their women's team, charity foundation and academy are removed from the deficit. This means that they are within the guidelines, but may have to sell players if they want to spend big again.

Eddie Howe recently spoke about potential January arrivals, saying: "Short term there would be a need to bring people in given the numbers, but we’ll assess as the month goes on as by the end of January we hope to have some big players back."

Their situation has not stopped the transfer rumours from flooding in, however, with the Magpies linked with moves for Paulo Dybala, Atalanta midfielder Ederson and Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich, in what could be a major move from those at St James' Park. And now, Alessio Romagnoli has become the latest name to be mentioned regarding a potential deal.

According to Calcio Mercato, Newcastle are interested in signing Romagnoli alongside Brighton & Hove Albion, as they seek a backup for Botman in Howe's backline. This isn't the first time that the Lazio defender has been linked with a move, either, with reports suggesting that Newcastle were interested in pursuing the then-AC Milan man back in 2022. Ultimately, the move failed to take place, but it seems as though the Magpies didn't forget and could now return to sign their long-term target.

The injury troubles of Botman and Fabian Schar this season have often left Newcastle stranded for centre-back options. Aside from the duo, Howe currently has just Jamaal Lascelles to choose from when it comes to recognised central defenders, whilst left-back Dan Burn has occasionally stepped into the role this season.

Romagnoli could be the player to put an end to those troubles, however. The Lazio man, who previously won Serie A at AC Milan, could arrive to turn things around. Compared to Lascelles, Botman and Schar, Romagnoli's stats show that he'd be more than capable of claiming a starting spot at St James' Park.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board has reshuffled its senior selection committee in the middle of the World Cup, inducting former head coach Andy Moles and Mujahid Zadran, an ACB coach who has been involved with the national team as well as the Afghanistan A and emerging teams, into the panel. The current chief selector, Dawlat Ahmadzai, will lead the junior selection committee.Moles has served as coach of the Afghanistan senior team as well as the country’s Under-19 team in the past. His stint with the senior team ran from 2014 to 2015, during which the side played their maiden World Cup, in Australia and New Zealand in 2015. The Australian declared that his side will look to take advantage of opportunities which present themselves, coming amid reports Spurs want to sign a new central midfielder.

"In terms of the rest of the transfer window, I was really pleased that the initial objectives we had in our head, which were someone in at centre-half and someone in the forward positions, that we ticked those off pretty early," said Postecoglou on the final days of January.

"And it’s not just been that we did them early, but they’re two guys who have really benefitted from having 10 days in the building with us, training, adjusting and all that. Both Timo and Radu are both in a really good place to help us going forward. As for what happens with the rest of it going forward, as I said last time, we’re always alert and doing work and if we can improve the squad we’ll look to do that. And if there are potentially any outgoings, we’re ready for that depending on what happens."

Spurs have been heavily linked with Chelsea star Conor Gallagher, but as we fast approach deadline day, the possibility of his arrival grows smaller and smaller given just the size of this deal.

While some in the game maintain a belief that Gallagher to Tottenham is still possible, Chelsea could demand as much as £60 million to part company with the 23-year-old.

Tottenham could make "cheap" move for Buck

Alternatives have been mentioned as a result, like Atalanta star Ederson or Blackburn's Adam Wharton. CBS reporter Ben Jacobs, speaking to The Last Word on Spurs podcast this week, suggests a bargain option could be New England Revolution ace Noel Buck.

Jacobs says Tottenham could sign Buck as a possibility this month and it is believed he'd cost a "cheap" fee in the region of £5-6 million.

“Kasey McAteer at Leicester, I have mentioned him before, that could grow legs," said Jacobs when discussing midfielders who could join Spurs.

"Noel Buck isn’t impossible. He’s currently at New England Revolution, Tottenham’s interest is historical. So if they are to reignite that they will have to move rather than continue anything ongoing, but the fee there is quite cheap, only £5-6m."

The MLS sensation has made 27 league appearances for New England over their latest campaign, scoring three goals and registering an assist, and their USA manager Gregg Berhalter has already called him a "really strong" player.

Buck has represented England at Under-19 level but would still potentially be eligible to play for the US national team, as he is a dual-national.

Inclusive o único chute do Leão do Sul na etapa inicial foi em um pênalti que caiu do céu, já que o Hercílio pouco pressionou o Verdão, mas Renato desperdiçou. Na etapa final, Garrety fez o gol da vitória dos visitantes que conseguiram a segunda vitória no torneio.

Com o resultado, o Leão do Sul conseguiu seu segundo êxito consecutivo no Catarinense e sobe três posições onde vira sexto colocado. A Chapecoense, que vinha de quatro vitórias em quatro jogos, viu seu primeiro revés. Porém continua na liderança do estadual com 12 pontos.

PEROTTI E MANCHA ASSUSTAM GOLEIRO DO HERCÍLIO

O jogo teve um ínicio nada empolgador. Apesar das equipes mostrarem disposição, pouco era criado até que Perotti, aos 11 minutos, resolveu acordar o torcedor. Ele limpou a marcação após receber na entrada da área e chutou forte, Rafael Roballo fez boa defesa.

Minutos depois, o susto da vez foi de Mancha. Após uma tentativa frustada de chute, a bola sobrou limpa para o lateral da Chapecoense que pegou de bate-pronto para a bola ir como um foguete. Porém a redonda passou por cima da meta de Rafael, que “tirou” o gol com o olho.

DOMÍNIO TOTAL DA CHAPE

Metade da primeira etapa chegou e a Chapecoense comanda a partida. Além de tentativas de jogadas no ataque, a equipe de Umberto Louzer chegou a ter 63% de posse da bola. O Hercílio Luz, por sua vez, não conseguia reagir sob a forte marcação do Verdão e até então não deu chutes rumo ao gol de Keiller.

PÊÊÊNALTI PARA O HERCÍLIO LUZ

Aos 37 minutos, Levi recebeu lançamento na grande área e com categoria matou no peito e tirou dois da marcação. Na sequência, Ezequiel derrubou o atacante na área e o árbitro assinalou pênalti também aplicando o amarelo no lateral-direito da Chape. Um presente para o Leão do Sul, que ainda não havia chutado ao gol.

Renato Henrique partiu para a cobrança, porém, isolou a penalidade. O camisa 10 pegou forte e embaixo da bola e ela subiu demais frente ao gol de Keiller.

CHAPE VOLTA ASSUSTANDO E HERCÍLIO TEM GOL QUE NÃO VALEU

Os primeiros minutos da etapa final foram de perigo. Aos quatro minutos, Mancha cobrou escanteio e Hiago cabeceou firme, a bola passou perto do gol.

Logo no minuto seguinte, o Leão do Sul marcou um belo gol com PH mandando por cavadinha na saída de Keiller, mas o árbitro apitou assinalando falta do atacante sobre Hiago.

A Chapecoense manteve a intensidade do primeiro tempo sobre o Hercílio, mas o último lance no campo de ataque não saiu como o esperado pelos atacantes, que pecavam nos arremates.

O Hercílio Luz com 13 minutos fez três substituições para tentar mudar o placar, e a equipe de Marcelo Caranhato assustou mais a Chape no segundo tempo do que na etapa inicial.

Aos 24 minutos, a Chape errou no meio-campo. Renato Henrique tocou para Garraty, que entrou no segundo tempo. O camisa 19 teve tempo de preparar o corpo e deixar a bola no jeito para chutar forte de fora da área e ela entrar no canto direito do goleiro Keiller.

PRESSÃO DA CHAPECOENSE ATÉ O FIM

Após o gol do Hercílio, a Chapecoense teve a chance de marcar logo na sequência. Mas após Roballo afastar a bola aérea, Bruno Silva chutou forte e o goleiro defendeu.

Ezequiel, aos 36 minutos, também arrematou forte no gol, mas a bola acertou a rede pelo lado de fora. Anselmo Ramon, dois minutos depois, teve uma grande oportunidade após cruzamento rasteiro de Anderson Leite, mas o centroavante chutou por cima.

Dos quatro nomes que já defenderam a Nerazzurri, Crespo é o que teve a passagem mais marcante pela equipe italiana, conquistando o Campeonato Italiano três vezes seguidas, nas temporadas de 2006/2007, 2007/2008 e 2008/2009, além de vencer a Supercopa da Itália em 2006 e em 2008. Entre os atuais jogadores do São Paulo que já passaram pela Internazionale, nenhum foi campeão. Deles, Miranda foi o que teve mais atuações, superando até mesmo Hernán Crespo. O zagueiro, que atuou na equipe de 2015 a 2019, tem 121 jogos pela equipe italiana, balançando as redes somente uma vez.

O outro brasileiro do quarteto, Hernanes, foi contratado pela Inter de Milão em 2013, ficando no clube até 2015, quando se transferiu para a Juventus. O meia fez 52 partidas pela equipe, marcando sete gols e dando 10 assistências.

Éder, por sua vez, defendeu a Inter de Milão de 2016 até 2018, onde disputou 86 partidas e marcou 14 gols. Suas atuações fizeram com que ele fosse convocado para a seleção italiana, na disputa da Euro Copa de 2016.

A mais recente contratação do Tricolor, Éder, ainda não é certa, pois o contrato ainda não foi assinado, mas, caso tudo corra bem nos exames médicos, o jogador deve ser anunciado em breve como o novo atacante do São Paulo.

It proved a pretty straightforward task, even though Tahir took wickets off the last two balls of the 14th over. First he bowled Kishan, who ended up in an awkward position after stepping out too early, and then he had Krunal Pandya caught and bowled to bring up 300 T20 wickets.Super Kings nearly had another wicket next ball, when Suryakumar stretched out to defend Jadeja and edged him between keeper and first slip. But Shane Watson, diving to his left, couldn’t hold on despite getting a hand to the ball. That was pretty much it, and Suryakumar and Hardik steered Mumbai home with an unbroken partnership of 31 in 27 balls.
