Liverpool could unlock Gakpo by signing "electric" £34m star

Liverpool have not been known to sign 'superstars' under Jurgen Klopp, despite the illustrious success that has suffused the German's reign on Merseyside.

Mohamed Salah, for example, is one of the world's best forwards but was signed from AS Roma for £34m in 2017 as an exciting player but not of the same calibre as European football's creme-de-la-creme.

It's a recruitment strategy that has paid dividends time and time again for the Reds, who invest in promising talents ready to be sculpted to Klopp's creation. It's a blueprint that has reaped silver-laden rewards.

Now, with the January transfer window nigh, Liverpool are expected to complete a deal or two to strengthen their squad as they compete for the Premier League title.

Bolstering the backline and defensive midfield is expected to take precedence, but that's not stopped rumours circulating concerning Johan Bakayoko, who could be the missing piece of Liverpool's attack.

Liverpool transfer news – Johan Bakayoko

According to ESPN, Liverpool are a firm contender to move for PSV Eindhoven star Bakayoko in 2024, and while a bid next summer is more probable, Salah's leave to compete in the African Cup of Nations next month could accelerate the club's plans.

Brentford fought hard to sign the young Belgian in the summer and saw a £34m club-record bid rejected in August, while Liverpool were credited with an interest alongside city rivals Everton and Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain, though the starlet ultimately remained with PSV.

PSV Eindhoven forwardJohan Bakayoko.

While Liverpool need to augment the defensive side of the pitch this winter, if an apt opportunity to swoop arises then there is every chance that Bakayoko could wind up at Anfield to make an impact during the pivotal business end of the campaign.

Johan Bakayoko's style of play

Principally a right winger, Bakayoko could be the perfect understudy for a player of Salah's ability, offering a more creative and "electric" presence down the wide channel, as the player was described by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Kulig also called the 20-year-old an "essential piece of this magnificent PSV team", with his outfit currently in first place in the Dutch Eredivisie after 16 matches, incredibly winning every match so far and perched ten points ahead of second-placed champions Feyenoord.

As per FBref, the wily winger ranks among the top 1% of positional peers across divisions similar to the Eredivisie over the past year for assists, the top 5% for shot-creating actions, the top 16% for passes attempted, the top 1% for progressive carries and the top 2% for successful take-ons per 90.

Effectively, such metrics highlight his barrelling presence and sublime creative skills, capable of blending pace with precision and intelligence in decisive moments.

With nine Belgium caps and one goal to his name at this maiden stage, Bakayoko appears to be the real deal and perhaps made the prudent move in remaining with the Boeren during the summer, continuing to hone his craft after bursting onto the scene last year.

Indeed, last season, a teenage Bakayoko made the journey from the youth ranks to the senior set-up and plundered five goals and assists apiece in the league, very quickly confirming his potential as one of the division's finest prospects – of which there are many.

But he's come alive this year and truly stamped his presence as one of Europe's hottest prospects, with Liverpool seemingly enticed by his skill set.

Johan Bakayoko's season in numbers

Across all competitions this season, Bakayoko has posted four goals and supplied 13 assists across 27 matches, turning heads in Britain after an excellent creative display against Rangers in Champions League qualifying.

In the Dutch top-flight, as per Sofascore, Bakayoko has been utterly mesmerising and has posted three goals and eight assists from just 14 starting appearances, creating nine big chances, averaging 2.7 key passes and 3.3 ball recoveries per game, boasting an 85% passing accuracy and succeeding with 3.3 (62%) duels per match.

His metrics are brilliant but stepping up to the Premier League is a mountainous challenge for even the most exciting of players, but right at the embryonic phase of a potentially prosperous career, Bakyoko will be confident in his ability.

He could even follow in the footsteps of Cody Gakpo, who joined Liverpool from PSV in a £35m deal one year ago…

Imagine Johan Bakayoko & Cody Gakpo

Gakpo earned widespread acclaim for his exploits at the 2022 World Cup with the Netherlands, scoring in all three group games and playing a big part as his nation waded into the quarter-finals, losing to eventual champions Argentina on penalties.

He joined a Liverpool side last January that was suffering a staggering internal malfunction, and it's hardly his fault that he made a slow start to life on English shores, with a shadow of a midfield supplementing him.

But he had enjoyed incredible riches in his homeland and had plundered 13 goals and 17 assists from just 24 matches across all competitions before his transfer.

Gakpo has somewhat come under fire this season but has still scored seven goals; he might need some added support to help him reach his full potential and Bakayoko could hold the intangible key.

Reuniting with Bakayoko, who had scarcely broken into the first-team at the time of Gakpo's departure, a brilliant connection could be forged, with the Dutchman's clinical shooting enhanced by Bakayoko's creativity.

conor-bradley-cody-gakpo-liverpool-opinion

Liverpool's usual wide players, Luis Diaz and Salah, both have fantastic qualities, but on the left, the Colombian has yet to assist in the Premier League and this is affecting Gakpo's support.

Salah, meanwhile, has created the most big chances in the division this season (13), but given that he ranks among only the top 63% of positional peers for shot-creating actions, it's clear that he is not focussing on assists, rather, they come naturally due to his remarkable vision and technical skills.

Bakayoko could be the perfect partner, as he would heap emphasis on providing for his erstwhile PSV teammate, and Klopp must make his move if a chance to snap him up arises this winter.

Worrall and Maxwell continue curse of table-toppers as Stars reach BBL final

Dan Worrall made early inroads into the Hurricanes’ powerful top order and despite three wickets for Qais Ahmad the chase was comfortable

Report by Alex Malcolm14-Feb-2019

Revenge is a dish best served cold. And on a cold night in Hobart, five years on from the Hurricanes upsetting the undefeated Melbourne Stars in the BBL 03 semi-final, the Stars exacted revenge on the best side of the home and away season to march into Sunday’s final. The win was set-up by a sensational spell from Stars quick Dan Worrall. He took 4 for 23 including the prize scalp of Matthew Wade and Caleb Jewell in the second over of the innings. The Hurricanes lost three wickets in the Powerplay for only the second time in the tournament and again lost the game. Wade and D’Arcy Short contributed just 37 between them after scoring 810 as a pair throughout the tournament. The Hurricanes’ five losses in the BBL all came when batting first. Ben McDermott made 53 and shared a steadying partnership with George Bailey but they couldn’t find the rope through the latter overs and the total of 153 always looked light. The Stars lost Ben Dunk early in the chase but Peter Handscomb played a gem making 35 from 26 balls. Qais Ahmad ripped out Marcus Stoinis, Nic Maddinson and Handscomb but the scoring rate never slowed and it allowed Glenn Maxwell and Seb Gotch to cruise to victory with six wickets and seven balls to spare.Worrall wobbleWade and Short have dominated the competition like no other opening pair in BBL history to help the Hurricanes plunder attacks throughout the regular season. But Worrall’s mix of swing, seam and slower balls put the Hurricanes under immediate pressure in the second over. They slumped to 2 for 5 as Worrall firstly removed Wade first ball with a beauty that angled in and seaming away from the around the wicket to scratch the edge of Wade’s broad bat. He then went over the wicket to the left-handed Jewell five balls later and clean bowled him with an off-spinning slower ball that pitched on leg stump before gripping and spinning to hit middle and off. Short provided a counter-attack racing to 35 from 20 balls but he made a rare error in both judgement and execution. Having already hit Adam Zampa for six in the final over of the Powerplay, he went to the well again and holed out to long-on to leave the Hurricanes 3 for 42.McDermott missionMcDermott and Bailey had to salvage a wreck against the Melbourne Renegades when the Hurricanes last lost three wickets in the Powerplay. On that occasion they convened at 3 for 11 and both made half-centuries in a 102-run stand. Here they were able to put on 75 in 62 balls but the difference was neither man could take the innings deep. Bailey fell for 37 with four overs left trying to up the ante against Worrall. McDermott reached his second fifty of the BBL but holed out with 13 balls remaining. It meant the Hurricanes could only score 17 runs from the last 13 balls with four players who had not done a great deal of batting throughout the tournament.Qais sera seraThe Hurricanes appeared to miss a trick early. Jofra Archer made the first breakthrough in the second over with Dunk given out caught behind. Archer and Riley Meredith bowled at warp speed. Meredith delivered a frightening over to Handcomb beating the bat four times and clocking 151kph. But as the run-rate climbed briefly above eight, Archer decided to abandon speed for a length slower ball and Handscomb released the pressure with a boundary. He followed with two more and the Stars reached 1 for 46 at the end of the Powerplay to be in cruise control. Qais Ahmad changed that. He delivered a spectacular leg break to clean bowl the white-hot Stoinis. Maddinson was promoted to take down Ahmad. Wade probably should have turned to the speed of Meredith with Maddinson’s recent troubles against pace fresh in the memory. He opted to stick with the legspinner and Ahmad got Maddinson but he did concede two sixes. Ahmad pinned Handscomb lbw in the 11th over to keep the game interesting but the Stars had done enough to make the equation 69 from 54 balls.Mature MaxwellThe responsibility of captaincy has brought out the best in Maxwell. He was determined to finish the match off his own blade again and he did so by barely taking a risk. Gotch was again a terrific ally. Unlike against the Sydney Sixers, where Gotch scored just one run in a 52-run partnership, he smacked three boundaries in his first eight balls to ease the burden on the captain. Maxwell then took control. He hit a ball so well through cover he forced Bailey to dive full length on the rope and left him with what appeared to be a dislocated shoulder. While the Hurricanes had earlier struggled to find the boundary in the back end of their innings, Maxwell and Gotch struck eight fours and a six between them. Gotch added the finishing touches with a wonderful strike over cover to win with seven balls to spare.

Chris Jordan hopes his World Cup ship 'hasn't sailed'

England bowler takes ‘encouragement’ from talks with national selector Ed Smith about ODI prospects

He may have been all but pigeon-holed as a 20-over specialist but, having done everything he could to thrust his name to the forefront of selectors’ minds in England’s opening T20I win over West Indies, Chris Jordan hopes his ODI World Cup ship has not sailed. With the T20 World Cup more than 18 months away, the three-match T20I series in the Caribbean represents little more than bonus entertainment for a fan base already spoiled by the excitement of the preceding three Tests and four ODIs, and a chance for both nations to hone their thinking about the ODI World Cup starting at the end of May – West Indies have even retained their ODI squad and captain for the T20I series.Jordan has not played an ODI in more than two years and his latest feats did come in the shorter format, but they reminded interested onlookers of his value with the ball and in the field. For his part, Jordan said it was all about “enjoyment” and it was easy to see why. He removed Chris Gayle cheaply for the first time since the ODI Player of the Series returned to the fold for West Indies’ limited-overs campaigns against England, and dismissed Darren Bravo with a brilliant a caught-and-bowled to finish with 2-16 off three overs.”The Caribbean is a lovely place to play cricket, my family will be here watching most games, just enjoy it and let results take care of themselves,” the Barbadian-born Jordan said, adding that he remained hopeful of securing a World Cup berth. “I hope the ship hasn’t sailed. I can’t get too far ahead in my thinking, I’m not that type of character. One game at a time and let the outcomes take care of themselves.”Jordan revealed he had spoken about his one-day prospects with national selector Ed Smith.”I’ve had conversations with Ed when squads are being picked and he’s always said I’m there or thereabouts, in the discussions,” Jordan said. “That gives me encouragement. T20 cricket is what I’m involved with at the minute, anything past that I’ll leave to the selectors and the captain.”Jordan was also hoping for the best for Jofra Archer, who was also born in Barbados and is expected to qualify for England under ECB residency rules in time for the World Cup, should he be selected.”I speak to him every day, literally every day, he’s like my little brother,” Jordan said of 23-year-old Archer. “One of the things I admire about Jofra, for a kid so young he’s got a good head on his shoulders. There is noise about him potentially playing in the series… if it happens I’m more than certain he’ll rise to the occasion because he’s that type of person and that type of character.”Jordan said he continued to work hard on his bowling and fielding, which was sharply in focus when he tempted Bravo with a newly developed slower ball and then changed direction on his follow through to take that spectacular one-handed catch sprawling to his right.”That was good,” Jordan said. “When I bowled the slower ball initially I wasn’t sure if I was getting there. Then, the closer I got I realised I was getting there and it stuck in my hand.”Not many catches are that easy, to be honest, you see them go down in games. You try to practice as much as possible, practice slip catching and outfield catching and when you get into game time when moments like that come you’ve almost played it over in your head already. I’m just glad it came off. I pride myself on my fielding in general. I do work hard on it.”And of the slower ball, he said: “Yeah, I have been adding a couple of slower balls to my arsenal. I don’t want to give away too much on it given I got a wicket with it, but it’s a new one.”Jordan had no qualms about not bowling at the death in the T20I series opener, which England won by four wickets with seven balls remaining. That role went to Tom Curran, who ended the match as the pick of the England bowlers, claiming 4-36 off his four overs.”It’s normally my role in the team, one or two (overs) in the Powerplay and two at the death, but my role is also to adapt and be versatile, be ready whenever the captain calls on me,” Jordan said. “TC did a brilliant job, took four wickets and bowled a brilliant last over, but next time it might be me. That’s the type of team we’re in, we’re not selfish characters and we just keep everyone improving.”

Liverpool eyeing new Van Dijk partner in "incredibly fast" target

Last time out in the Premier League, Liverpool's ferocious offensive proved too much for an out-of-sorts Newcastle United side, planting Jurgen Klopp's side back in top spot after 20 matches.

2023 was a whirlwind of a year at Anfield but one that weathered the early storm to emerge with renewed vigour and a rekindled glow that has arrived following the sweeping changes made in the summer transfer market, replacing the beaten-down midfield.

Liverpool may well be top but Manchester City and a host of other contenders are snapping at their heels and the pursuit of points must be unrelenting to prevail, and the January transfer window – which is now upon us – must be used to fortify the ranks.

Liverpool transfer news – Ko Itakura

If the unerring Fabrizio Romano reports it, there is little doubt that credence lies within the murmurings, with the journalist revealing that Liverpool – alongside Tottenham Hotspur – are interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach's Ko Itakura.

Liverpool need a centre-back and Itakura would fit the bill, but given that his release clause is not valid until the summer, it might prove difficult to prise him away from Germany.

Nonetheless, a deal could be struck and technical director Jorg Schmadtke will be working feverishly to snap him up.

Ko Itakura's style of play

Itakura, aged 26, is a quick and enterprising defender with a broad range of passing and a composed approach to his defensive duties that ensures he does not lunge recklessly into challenges.

Once called "incredibly fast" by pundit Hans Kraay, the £32k-per-week titan has chalked up 33 appearances for Gladbach since departing Manchester City in 2022, having failed to break into the first-team, and impressed after completing 91% of his passes in the Bundesliga last term, averaging 3.8 clearances per game and winning 62% of his duels, as per Sofascore.

This season, an ankle injury has limited him to just seven outings, though he has scored twice and has demonstrated his energetic output with 4.4 ball recoveries per game.

Ko Itakura for Japan

Given that he would arrive from Germany, Klopp could replicate the deal to sign Joel Matip, with the veteran centre-half rupturing his ACL in December, now out for the season and with his contract expiring in June.

Matip is a keen dribbler and ranks among the top 4% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref – with Itakura's electric pace, this could be replicated.

Liverpool could land Matip upgrade by signing £34m-rated "future legend"

Liverpool could land this £34m-rated “future legend” who is already better than Matip.

ByAdam Scully Dec 13, 2023

The Japan international's ability to play on the left side of the central defence also underscores the worth that he would bring, and Klopp could use him to fill in for imperious captain Virgil van Dijk, perhaps even allowing the Dutchman to play on his natural right side, something that has scarcely happened since he joined Liverpool from Southampton for £75m six years ago.

Van Dijk is widely regarded as one of the world's best centre-backs and has been godlike in the rearguard this term as his side targets major honours, having completed 91% of his passes in the Premier League, averaging five ball recoveries and 4.5 clearances per game and incredibly won 78% of his duels.

With defensive partners of similar robustness and athleticism, Liverpool could find the dream heir to take the baton from Matip, and Itakura would succeed in serving alongside a player of Van Dijk's distinction with success.

Sean Williams ton powers Zimbabwe to series win

UAE’s top order flounders with no batsman crossing 50, legspinner Ryan Burl finishes with career-best figures

After running Zimbabwe close two nights ago, UAE were put through another tough examination in Harare in the third ODI of their four-match series, and the quality of Zimbabwe’s batsmanship was good enough to help them clinch the series 3-0 with one to play. This was made possible courtesy Sean Williams’ third ODI century, an unbeaten 84-ball 109, that helped Zimbabwe post 307 for 4. Williams was helped along the way by Craig Ervine and Peter Moor, the captain, with whom he put together 104 and 145 respectively.Moor made 58 off 52 balls during the course of the mammoth fifth-wicket stand off just 107 deliveries. That helped the pair add 100 in the last ten overs. They took a special liking to offspinner Rohan Mustafa, whose 1 for 67 was the most expensive spell for UAE.In reply, UAE slumped to 15 for 3 in the sixth. Zimbabwe were briefly kept at bay by CP Rizwan and Muhammad Usman, who made 47 and 49 respectively, but that served to merely limit the damage. Ryan Burl, the 24-year-old legspinner, first removed Rizwan and then returned to clean up the lower order to finish with a career-best 4 for 32.The two sides will square off in the fourth and final ODI on Tuesday.
