Jamaal Lascelles would be an excellent buy for Everton this summer

As reported by The Sun, Everton are ready to raid Newcastle United for club captain Jamaal Lascelles during this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the story?

New boss Marco Silva is still settling into his role as the new manager at Goodison Park, with fans eager to see what kind of first team squad he will build during the upcoming transfer window.

One player on Silva’s radar is Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles.

That’s according to The Sun, who report that the Toffees are lining up a £30m bid for the Magpies captain, hoping to capitalising on uncertainty regarding Rafa Benitez’s future at the club.

The paper say that Silva is looking for a long-term defensive partner to Michael Keane.

[ad_pod ]

Would he be a good signing?

Lascelles emerged as a classy and committed performer in 2017/18, leading Newcastle United to a top ten finish on their return to the top-flight from the English Championship.

On the verge of an England call-up, the 24-year-old has shown qualities beyond his years since bursting into the Magpies first team, typifying the spirit that Rafa Benitez has brought to the club.

A composed and physical defender, Lascelles ticks plenty of boxes for Everton and at the reported £30m he is a steal in today’s transfer market and someone that the Toffees should strongly consider a defensive partner for the likes of Keane.

Middlesbrough fans react to Huth speculation

SkyBet have placed Middlesbrough as the 4/6 favourites to bring Robert Huth back to the Riverside Stadium this summer.

Huth is available on a free transfer following his release from Leicester City, and it is understood that the 33-year-old has no plans to hang up his boots.

The defender played a key role in Leicester’s 2015-16 title-winning Premier League campaign, but did not make a single appearance the Foxes last term due to a number of injuries.

SkyBet have placed Boro as the favourites to sign the German defender this summer, and if the bookmaker is to be believed, they are well ahead of the likes of Stoke City and Aston Villa.

Huth turned out for Boro between 2006 and 2009 – making 63 appearances for the club before leaving for Stoke City.

The Boro supporters have been reacting to the news on social media, and it would be fair to say that they have contrasting views on whether it would be a good deal.

Indeed, there are plenty who are struggling to look past Huth’s recent injury problems, although there are also those who feel that the German would be a brilliant signing.

Liverpool fans are interested in signing Cheryshev after stand-out World Cup display

Liverpool fans are interested in making a move for Russia star Denis Cheryshev after his stand-out performance on the opening day of the World Cup.

The 27-year-old scored a wonderful double against Saudi Arabia in a 5-0 rout, firing his nation towards the perfect start as hosts of the summer tournament.

Cheryshev has previously been linked with a move to Anfield, with The Independent reporting in 2016 he could have made a winter transfer window move to the Reds. The former Real Madrid man eventually signed permanently for Villarreal where he made 31 appearances last season.

Saudi Arabia may not have been the strongest of opposition but he showed the kind of finishing ability that wouldn’t look out of place in the Premier League and Liverpool supporters are now interested as a result.

He could provide depth to Liverpool’s attacking areas and while obviously unlikely to displace their current starting stars, could be the kind of affordable back-up that Jurgen Klopp is looking for this summer.

Rangers fans would love club to make ambitious move for Jack Wilshere

The 26-year-old England international made his debut way back in 2008, spending his entire career at the Gunners save for loan spells at Bolton Wanderers and Bournemouth.

He made 197 appearances for the first team, but revealed that he was not likely to get as much first team action as he desired under new boss Unai Emery, despite being satisfied with the terms of a new contract.

With clubs up and down the country likely to be interested in his services, the fans of one team are hoping he will put football before money and sign for them.

Rangers supporters believe he would be the perfect fit in Steven Gerrard’s team and that the club should look to make an ambitious move for him this summer.

Financials are obviously likely to be the sticking point here, but is there a possibility that Wilshere would be willing to take a pay cut to link up with an English football legend and find regular first team football again?

Pochettino factor could convince exciting £10.8m-rated sensation of Tottenham move

Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the 2018/19 Premier League season, what with their side seeking to build upon their impressive third place finish last time round.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men deserve huge credit for sealing a third successive top four finish in the English top-flight, thus bringing a third straight Champions League campaign to North London. However, a title challenge still remains a way away given they ended up a staggering 23 points adrift of champions Manchester City last season, although some big additions this summer could see Pochettino’s men bridge that gap this time round.

As such, there are many excited and expectant Spurs supporters in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent reports suggesting that Ademola Lookman could seek to leave Everton this summer.

And with Tottenham one team reportedly ‘keeping tabs’ on the £10.8 million-rated (as per Transfermarkt) sensation’s situation, the Pochettino factor and chance to work under the Argentine could convince the 20-year-old of a move to North London.

Ultimately, things haven’t quite worked out for the England Under-20 World Cup winner since his move to Goodison Park, this all despite the attacker netting just a few minutes into his debut in their 4-0 rout of Manchester City back in January 2017.

Is this the best World Cup ever? Give us your thoughts here

In fact, Lookman was so low down the pecking order at the club that he instigated a loan move to RB Leipzig back in January, from which he seriously reaped the rewards in netting five goals and laying on four assists in 11 Bundesliga appearances for the German outfit.

Thus, it seems clear that the 20-year-old is ready for first team football at Everton, but if that is not forthcoming, a move to Tottenham could be in his best interests given the track record Pochettino has at developing young talent.

The likes of Dele Alli, Eric Dier, and Harry Kane have all been given plenty of first team opportunities under the Argentine at Tottenham, and all three have benefited to become integral members of the squad at the North London club – they are also three of England’s most important players.

Add in the likes of Harry Winks, and indeed Luke Shaw at Southampton, and it’s evident that Pochettino isn’t afraid of providing opportunities to young players and then backing them in the first team. And given the ability and potential Lookman has, he is sure to get the chance to prove his worth at Spurs.

Ultimately, not many players have regressed under Pochettino’s stewardship at Tottenham, and with the North London outfit seemingly heading in the right direction under the Argentine, they are becoming an increasingly attractive proposition.

Thus, with Lookman reportedly seeking to leave Everton this summer, Pochettino’s influence could be enough to convince him of a move to Tottenham.

Newcastle fans can’t decide on second summer signing

Newcastle fans are completely split over their latest transfer move, as the club is set to sign Ki Sung-yueng for free this summer, providing he receives the appropriate visa.

The Chronicle reported Newcastle holding talks with South Korea’s captain on Friday, and the Swansea man was announced by the club within a matter of hours.

He will become the Magpies’ second summer signing after goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, signing an initial two-year deal.

The 29 year-old, who has an incredible 104 caps for his country, will be out of contract this summer, after spending five seasons in South Wales.

Newcastle fans are of course desperate for some summer spending, and the free signing of an ex-Sunderland player isn’t exactly doing a lot to quench the transfer thirst of some fans.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”258359″ player=”12034″ title=”The World Cup Twitter Report”]

Ki probably will not dislodge Mo Diame or Jonjo Shelvey from the starting eleven, and the Swansea midfielder scored just twice last season.

However, plenty of other fans are seeing the value in the move, adding depth to the midfield and hopefully saving money to invest in other areas.

Rafael Benitez is desperate for a new number nine and some firepower on the wings this summer, and owner Mike Ashley is extremely unlikely to splash out on multiple big deals, so the bargain move for Ki could be a really shrewd signing.

Fans are completely split over the move, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Three things Newcastle must do to turn their season around

After a disastrous second half to last season, most Newcastle fans will have been looking forward to a fresh start under a new manager in 2015-16.

However, with only two points gained from their first six Premier League games and elimination in the Capital One Cup by modest opposition, it is much of the same this term for the Tyneside club.

There was significant expenditure by owner Mike Ashley over the course of the summer, with four big-money signings arriving from overseas, but still the St James’ Park squad looks like it is lacking top quality.

With this in mind and pressure starting to build on Steve McClaren already, here are three things the club must do to turn its fortunes around…

Sort the centre of defence out

Of the new signings from the summer, young centre-half Chancel Mbemba has been by far the most impressive, with the former Anderlecht enforcer looking like he has all the attributes to be a real star in the Premier League.

However, unfortunately alongside him captain and long-term talisman Fabricio Coloccini has looked decidedly off the boil and is actually more of a liability for Newcastle currently than an asset.

As such, the use of Steven Taylor, one of the few homegrown players, in the Argentine’s place makes sense.

Coloccini still could have a role to play in the centre of midfield, where a dominant and able performer like the South American would be more useful to the collective.

Get Thauvin on the ball

When Newcastle signed Remy Cabella last summer, most of the Tyneside faithful believed they had a top-class new player on their hands.

Despite the former Montpellier man’s technical ability, he simply did not take to Premier League football and has since returned to his homeland as part of the deal to bring Florian Thauvin to Tyneside.

The new attacking midfielder arrives with a burgeoning reputation and showed just why with a goal and three assists in his first game in the Capital One Cup.

In Premier League action Thauvin has much less of an impact and has drifted in and out of games.

To avoid the Frenchman following in countryman Cabella’s footsteps, building his confidence up by giving him the ball regularly and allowing him to do what he does best is necessary.

Get Ayoze Perez in the team

Three goals in six games is certainly relegation form, with the personnel in the final third needing to be examined.

Although Papiss Cisse has shown in the past that he can be unplayable when in the mood and Aleksandar Mitrovic has a good goal record elsewhere but a questionable temperament, the fringe status of Ayoze Perez is somewhat confusing.

The 22-year-old Spaniard showed in the first half of last season under Alan Pardew that he can be a dangerous and reliable centre forward, but has only started two games this term.

Getting Perez back to his best could well give Newcastle the man they need to fire them out of trouble, with the former Tenerife man looking like the best option in attack for McClaren currently.

Man United vs. Arsenal: The decline of a rivalry

It was once the most iconic fixture in the Premier League, a match that could rival El Clasico in rank and superiority. Other domestic clubs would look on in wonder to watch Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira commence battle in what was always a title-deciding encounter. It was the match that defined the new Premier League era, so why does it already feel like a matchup for the nostalgic among us?

Maybe it’s because the players who made this fixture great in the first place have now retired. However the rivalry was sustained for over 15 years, only one club men Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs went the distance with this rivalry. With the exception of the two aforementioned, the likes of Eric Cantona, Emmanuel Petit and David Beckham came and went, allowing new players to come in to sustain the rivalry’s competitive edge. Therefore the interchanging of players should not be an excuse.

The retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson still feels slightly out of place in this fixture, as Arsene Wenger looks more comfortable on the turf of Old Trafford than the United manager of present Louis van Gaal.

However the rivalry did not solely rely on the presence of Fergie, and many will feel the regression had begun long before the Scotsman retired. The non-participation of Arsenal in the title race since 2005, coinciding with the emergence of Chelsea and Roman Abramovich’s millions, is, perhaps, the issue. The Gunners have since found it harder to compete with the financial clout of their London rivals. You might assume, then, that Chelsea vs Man United would become the new headline clash of the Premier League. In many ways it was, although the swapping of managers and changing of players meant that an established narrative couldn’t be forged between the two sides. Ferguson would face Jose Mourinho one year and Felipe Scolari the next. The beauty of Man United vs Arsenal was that it was an opportunity for the two sides to settle old scores, and for Ferguson and Wenger to lock horns again.

Wenger’s French revolution completely epitomised the new Premier League, and Fergie’s class of ’92 downright hated it. What we had was a new kind of footballing rivalry, the kind that wasn’t determined by geography or politics, but by the immense quality of the two teams. Man United and Arsenal were in a league of their own, although they are now a shadow of their former selves. Wenger remains, although his Arsenal have struggled since Chelsea and Man City started flexing their financial muscles.

This once titanic fixture is on the verge of dying out, without any geographical tension there is no justification for getting excited about Man United vs Arsenal anymore. Neither team is in the title race, and neither team possess a single player who will be revered as a club legend when they retire, with the exception of Wayne Rooney.

Ferguson and Wenger had respect for each other, and the teams they produced, which gave birth to one of football’s great modern day rivalries. Mourinho’s witless remarks vs Man City’s recycling of English talent doesn’t even come close to something that constitutes the term ‘Super Sunday’. There is no sense of drama in these so-called top six fixtures, the players play for the wages they earn rather than the badge on their shirt, most of them have city hopped from club to club anyway.

Man United vs Arsenal is sadly nothing more than another top six encounter, lost in the chaos of Sky Sports’ ‘greatest league in the world’ conspiracy, for the likes of Piers Morgan to get his knickers in a twist over.

Back Chelsea, Liverpool and Southampton in your Premier League Accumulator

Here is my accumulator for matchweek 15 with all my Premier League predictions. With a full schedule of fixtures to choose from there are 100’s of potential outcomes. Here are my top selections with full descriptions as to why I believe they offer great value.

Premier League fixtures

Here is a full list of this weekend’s fixtures that I had to pick from:

Saturday 5th December 2015

Stoke City v Manchester City

Arsenal v Sunderland

Manchester United v West Ham United

Southampton v Aston Villa

Swansea City v Leicester City

Watford v Norwich City

West Bromwich Albion v Tottenham Hotspur

Chelsea v AFC Bournemouth

Sunday 6th December 2015

Newcastle United v Liverpool

Monday 7th December 2015

Everton v Crystal Palace

This week’s accumulator is as follows

Chelsea win (against Bournemouth)

Manchester City to win either half (against Stoke)

Leicester City or draw (against Swansea)

Watford draw no bet (against Norwich)

Liverpool win (against Newcastle)

Southampton win (against Aston Villa)

Chelsea win – I know Chelsea are having a difficult time this season but it’s not half as bad as Bournemouth’s recent form. Bournemouth scraped a point against Everton last weekend but have not won in their previous 8 games in the Premier League. Chelsea are still a strong home team in the Premier League and should still fancy themselves to take all 3 points on Saturday.

Manchester City to win either half

Manchester City currently lead the Premier League and are the bookmaker’s favourite to lift the trophy at the end of the season. Stoke have lost half of their Premier League games at the Britannia this season and have lost at least a half in 4 of their 6 Premier League games at the Britannia. Man City looked much better in their game against Southampton last weekend which gives me faith they can turn their poor away form around. Stoke will also be without their most experienced defender Ryan Shawcross.

Liverpool win

I have gone with Liverpool as they look to be a team rejuvenated under Jurgen Klopp. The opposite can be said for Newcastle United under Steve McClaren who are 19th in the Premier League. Liverpool have won 6 of their last 7 games under their new manager and head into the game with renewed faith they can achieve something this season. Liverpool’s last 2 away games in the Premier League have seen them beat Chelsea 3-1 and Manchester City 4-1.

Watford draw no bet

Watford have comfortably been the best of the newly promoted sides in the Premier League. Their league position would reflect this having taken 19 points from their 14 games played. Norwich have managed 13 points up to now and hover just above the relegation zone. Norwich are yet to win a game on the road this season and have lost their last 3 away games.

Southampton win

I can’t help but pick up on Aston Villa’s poor form. Aston Villa are bottom of the table with only 5 points. No side has ever taken less than that at this stage of the season and I fear it could be curtains for them. Villa have lost 8 of their last 9 games in all competitions, managing only a draw in their other game. Southampton have taken 20 points from their opening 14 games and will be keen to pick up points after last weekend’s defeat to Manchester City.

This accumulator pays out at odds of 14/1

I am sure you will have noticed that I have chosen not to bet on the four other Premier League games this weekend. I will give you a brief reason as to why I chose not to include those games in my accumulator.

Arsenal v Sunderland

Arsenal really struggled in November only picking up 2 points from their 3 games played. On paper Arsenal are the better side but are missing 10 first team players through injury. Sunderland have won their last 2 games under Sam Allardyce so they are playing with added confidence. I felt the Arsenal to win price of 1/5 was extremely short as were a majority of the markets in that game because of the above reason.

Everton v Crystal Palace

This game has all the potential to be an open game and if I was choosing a bet it would probably be over 2.5 goals which is priced at 4/5. Five of Everton’s last 6 games have cleared this line and they are scoring for fun with 14 goals scored in their last 4 games. Crystal Palace have only cleared this line in 2 of their last 5 games however. I was also put off by the fact that Everton have an important midweek game in the Capital One Cup against Middlesbrough.

West Brom v Tottenham Hotspur

I am generally wary of games when a team is odds on away from home and this is no different. I looked into Tottenham or draw but when it is priced at 1/5 I don’t believe that is offering value. Tottenham are undoubtedly in great form but West Brom can be unpredictable as we saw when they beat Arsenal 2 weekends ago.

Manchester United v West Ham United

Two teams who have taken a decent amount of points from their opening 14 games. United however have been far from convincing despite sitting second in the table. If I was looking for a bet, I would go on the under 2.5 goals market priced at 4/5. United have been poor in terms of creating chances relying on their defensive tactics to see out games. West Ham are missing their key player Dimitri Payet.

Ten stars who should be at the top of Arsenal gaffer’s Christmas wishlist

Check your advent calendars, boys and girls – we’re now officially two days into the countdown to Christmas, which means Coca-Cola adverts, cheesy movies, carol singers and mince pies will be invading all of your senses for the next few weeks as we prepare for a visit from merry ol’ Saint Nick.

But it also means young lads and ladies from up and down the country will be writing their wish lists for Santa Claus – and it’s a little-known fact that Premier League managers also partake in the annual tradition.

Indeed, few need the magic of Christmas more than the unfortunate gaffers who ply their trade in the ever-unpredictable and chaotic world of the English top flight, especially with the January transfer window just around the corner.

And with that in mind, here’s a list of TEN coveted stars who should be topping the wish list of Arsenal gaffer Arsene Wenger. Will Santa deliver?

JOHN STONES

With Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscienly both the wrong side of 30, Arsenal need a youthful centre-back breaking through.

The Gunners have already been linked with Everton’s John Stones and the home-grown prodigy’s ability to play out of the back would suit their technically-demanding philosophy perfectly.

£45million, however, might be just outside of Santa’s price-range.

ANTOINE GRIEZMANN

One of the most versatile and industrious goal scorers in Europe, pretty much everybody’s got one eye on Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann at the moment.

The France international arrived at Vincente Calderon as a promising wide-man but has scored 35 goals in 71 appearances since switching to centre-forward.

Equally adept at both roles and famed for his phenomenal work-rate, the 24-year-old would vastly enhance Arsene Wenger’s options in attack. His release clause is set at €80million.

PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang boasts the most league goals of any player in Europe’s five leading top flights with 17 in 14 appearances – bringing his Borussia Dortmund total to 66 in 117 since his summer 2013 arrival from St. Etienne.

Blessed with electrifying pace and all-round athleticism, the 6 foot 1 Gabon international could accumulate cricket scores with the potent supply from Arsenal’s midfield.

Its believed the Black-Yellows value the 26-year-old at around £42million – but he’s often talked up a move to Spain over the Premier League.

JOEL MATIP

A bit of a stocking filler but a very handy one nonetheless. As a fantastic athlete of great versatility, Joel Matip has much to offer a top European club like Arsenal.

Indeed, the 24-year-old has featured at full-back, defensive midfield and centre-back throughout his Schalke career and the current Arsenal squad lacks a utility man of Matip’s description.

Furthermore, the Cameroon international’s Veltins Arena contract expires at the end of the season, so he will be available on the cheap in January.

NOLITO

A La Liga star whose stock is seemingly rising by the match, Celta Vigo’s Nolito has claimed eight goals and four assists in 13 league outings this season whilst averaging 2.8 created chances per-match.

The Spain international is already on Arsenal’s radar ahead of the January window and would certainly suit their style of play.

But even Father Christmas might not be able to convince the 29-year-old into a winter move with Celta currently sixth in the La Liga table.

Riyad Mahrez

Injures to Alexis Sanchez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Aaron Ramsey have highlighted Arsenal’s lack of depth out wide and Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez would be a more than adequate midseason remedy.

A return of seven goals and six assists in 13 Premier League appearances, whilst averaging the most dribbles per match, 3.7, of any player in the division, suggests the Algerian international could ply his trade at a much higher level.

Like Nolito, however, he’ll be reluctant to quit the Foxes whilst they’re second in the table.

LARS BENDER

Currently averaging 4.5 tackles per match in the Bundesliga, Lars Bender would certainly fill Francis Coquelin’s void in the Gunners’ engine room.

The Bayer Leverkusen star is famed for his dynamism and industriousness and has often been tipped to move to the Premier League.

The German international would add some much-needed steel to Arsenal’s midfield and could prove an integral influence when facing Premier League and Champions League heavyweights.

GONZALO HIGUAIN

A natural poacher of the highest order, Gonzalo Higuain possesses the predatory instincts Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud are often accused of lacking, evident enough through his career return of 231 goals in 476 appearances throughout spells with River Plate, Real Madrid, Napoli and the Argentina national team.

His Serie A haul of twelve in 15 this season will have undoubtedly caught Arsene Wenger’s attention, having attempted to sign the 27-year-old back in summer 2013.

Higuain’s prior on-pitch relationship with fellow former Blanco Mesut Ozil is another added bonus and the South American could well be the final piece of the jigsaw for Arsenal.

JAVI MARTINEZ

The physical and defensive prowess of 6 foot 3 Javi Martinez has often seen him fill in at centre-back for club and country, but the Bayern Munich midfielder is blessed with all the technical quality you’d expect of a Spain international plying his trade under Pep Guardiola.

In short, he’d be an ideal addition to Arsenal’s midfield – adding much-needed physical menace whilst keeping up with their quick-paced passing game.

Now verging on the final 18 months of his Allianz Arena contract and fighting against a congested squad for a recurring role in the starting Xi, a few select words from St. Nick could convince the 27-year-old to jump ship to the Emirates in January.

ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC

It’s a present that Arsenal would have to wait until the summer to open, but an incredibly exciting one nonetheless.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s PSG contract expires at the end of the season and the enigmatic Swede has unfinished business with Arsenal, allegedly rejecting the chance to trial with the Gunners back in 2001.

Having since emerged as one of the top players of his generation, winning titles with Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC Milan and the Parisians whilst conjuring up 412 goals in 744 career appearances, Zlatan still has plenty to offer Arsenal up front – even at 34 years of age.
