Maxwell, Handscomb dumped for Tests against Pakistan; Finch, Siddle recalled

The Queensland trio of Labuschagne, Neser and Doggett were also named in the 15-man squad. The first Test begins on October 7 in Dubai

Daniel Brettig11-Sep-2018Glenn Maxwell and Peter Handscomb have been deemed surplus to requirements in the first Australian Test squad since the Newlands ball-tampering scandal. They were left out, while the experienced Victorian pair of Aaron Finch and Peter Siddle were called into the team for the two-Test series against Pakistan, to fill the lack of experience left by the injured Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, and the banned Steven Smith and David Warner.Another member of Australia’s previous Test team, Joe Burns, has also been discarded, with the South Australia captain Travis Head granted a long-form opportunity. The conscientious Bulls middle-order batsman Marnus Labuschagne made a late run for inclusion in the squad after being called up to Australia A as injury cover for Matt Renshaw, who has also been included. The all-out pace of Brendan Doggett has seen him win a place alongside Michael Neser. Ashton Agar will serve as the back-up spinner to Nathan Lyon and the Victorian Jon Holland. The new coach Justin Langer’s loyalty to Mitchell and Shaun Marsh has seen both included, the former a likely candidate for vice-captaincy when the Cricket Australia Board deliberates on the identity of Paine’s lieutenant in the coming days. The exclusion of Maxwell, at a time when Australia’s Test-batting stocks have seldom been lower, is a grim sign for the 29-year-old’s future Test-match prospects. Trevor Hohns, the selection chairman, explained that the omissions of Burns, Maxwell, Handscomb and fast bowler Jhye Richardson were intended to exhort them to demand a place via domestic performances.”Joe, Peter and Glenn were players we discussed when selecting the batting group, but we had to take into account the conditions and competition we are set to face in the upcoming series,” Hohns said. “All three remain on our radar for Test cricket, but we want them to perform for their states and continue to push their case ahead of what is going to be a big Australian summer.”Jhye is a player who has a bright future in all formats, and has been impressive in his international opportunities to date. He is one of a number of developing bowlers adding to the depth of our fast bowling group, and we see him potentially having an important role to play in the shorter formats of the game in the immediate future.”In selecting Finch and Siddle, Langer and the selection panel appear to have tried to infuse the team with experienced leaders, capable of helping Paine to rebuild the team’s culture and identity after the traumas of South Africa. Siddle, described as a “warrior” by Hohns, last played a Test for Australia in 2016 at the WACA Ground, when he broke down with an injury after being rushed back into the team.”Peter is a proven performer in the Test arena, who has been in outstanding form in his recent first-class outings over in England,” Hohns said. “His experience will be crucial for this bowling group, and we know that he is a warrior who can bowl the type of long, tight spells which may be required in the conditions we expect to face.”Aaron is in sensational form, and this is the right time to give him a chance to play Test cricket. He has performed well in the Sheffield Shield in recent seasons, and brings added experience and leadership to this group. Travis has improved his game immensely over the past 12 months, and is the type of player we want in this environment. He’s a hard worker who has performed well with the bat in his recent four-day opportunities for Australia A and South Australia.”Michael is a strong all-round cricketer – he bowls and bats well, and is a mature player coming off a fantastic Sheffield Shield season for Queensland. He has impressed us with his performances for Australia A and in his white-ball opportunities for Australia. Marnus is a young player with plenty of potential and a great work ethic. He has performed well in the Sheffield Shield, has shown he’s a good player of spin for Australia A in India, and is an elite fielder who offers added variety with the ball as a leg-spin option.”Doggett’s selection, after only nine first-class matches – including the current Australia A fixture – maintains Australia’s obsession with bowlers of high pace. Hohns characterised Doggett as a backup for Starc, and he would also become the second indigenous male cricketer to earn a baggy green cap – after Jason Gillespie – if he starts.”Brendan is an exciting prospect, a fast bowler with raw pace and wicket-taking ability,” Hohns said. “He provides an additional option to Mitchell Starc if extra pace is called for, and this is an ideal opportunity to get him involved in a national set-up for the first time after his recent showings for Queensland and Australia A.”There has been significant change to our Test squad, due to the unavailability of a number of key players. That said, we firmly believe the squad selected is up to the challenge ahead, and is capable of playing a brand of cricket that can perform well in this series against Pakistan. There are five potential debutants in the squad, all of whom have earned selection through their performances and deserve this opportunity.”It’s a blend of experienced players who have a significant amount of either Test or first-class cricket, and a number of younger players who we are confident are ready for the Test arena. Looking at the conditions we may face in the UAE, we believe this squad covers all bases. We have selected four front-line fast bowlers and three spinners, with Mitchell Marsh ready to play as an all-rounder and a number of top-order batsmen who also offer part-time spin options.”Australia squad: Tim Paine (capt, wk), Ashton Agar, Brendan Doggett, Aaron Finch, Travis Head, Jon Holland, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Michael Neser, Matthew Renshaw, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc
Out: Joe Burns, Glenn Maxwell, Peter Handscomb, Jhye Richardson

Middlesex threaten to spoil Paul Collingwood's swansong

Durham’s dominance on the first day promised a final-game win for Paul Collingwood but life is not turning out so easily

ScorecardMiddlesex have threatened to spoil Paul Collingwood’s swansong at the Emirates Riverside with a spirited fightback on day two of their Specsavers County Championship Division Two clash against Durham. The home side boasted a lead of 106 at the start of the day, and through Gareth Harte they were able to extend their advantage. He notched his second century of the campaign before Durham were dismissed for 310, leaving the visitors with plenty of work ahead of them to remain in the game.Middlesex were able to haul themselves back into the contest courtesy of a fine partnership between Nick Gubbins and Stevie Eskinazi, eradicating the hosts’ lead and handing Dawid Malan’s men an advantage of 66 runs going into the third day.Durham resumed on their overnight total of 227-5, but were pegged back when Stuart Poynter edged Ethan Bamber behind to Robbie White for 26. Harte kept Durham moving to secure their second batting point, while Mark Wood and Barry McCarthy offered support to the 25-year-old. The batsman notched the second first-class century of his career, reaching the milestone in 196 deliveries, scoring his ninth boundary to get over the line.Harte fell two short of his career best made earlier in the campaign against Derbyshire. Tim Murtagh wrapped up the final two wickets, claiming figures of 4 for 56, although Durham’s first first-innings score of over 300 at home this term handed Collingwood’s side a more than healthy lead of 189 runs.Middlesex needed to display character in their second innings. Sam Robson and Gubbins dug in the early stages to see off the threat of the new ball. Collingwood introduced himself into the attack and his arrival broke the partnership after the opening pair had passed fifty together. The Durham skipper nipped one back to clean bowl Robson for 36.Gubbins joined by Eskinazi, who managed to return to the field after being struck in the head on day one, continued to defy the home side, displaying patience at the crease. Gubbins’ composure paid off as he reached his half-century off 135 deliveries, scoring eight boundaries in the process. The duo whittled down Durham’s advantage to less than fifty as Eskinazi found a rhythm, reeling off back-to-back fours to notch his fifty. The two Middlesex batsman frustrated the home side’s bowling attack, bringing up their 100-run partnership in 178 deliveries all but eradicating the deficit. Eskinazi began to up the ante to move his way into the nineties, putting his side into the lead, although he was given a life when dropped by Cameron Steel at point. However, Eskinazi fell four short of his ton, clipping straight to Collingwood at mid-wicket, breaking the stand of 159 with Gubbins.Malan added quick runs towards the close, edging his side’s lead over the 60-run mark. Gubbins was unbeaten on 90 with Middlesex in the ascendancy heading into the third day of the contest with eight wickets remaining in their second innings.

Leeds must seal move for 5 ft 10 wizard who’d thrive with Rutter

Leeds United are marching on in their pursuit of an instant return to the Premier League after they were relegated from the top-flight earlier this year.

The Whites enjoyed and endured three seasons of football at the top table of English football before tumbling back down to the Championship at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

In an attempt to bolster their chances of bouncing back at the first attempt, the club decided to appoint German head coach Daniel Farke over the summer – arriving with two league titles at this level under his belt from his time with Norwich City.

Leeds opted to back him in the transfer window as they allowed the impressive tactician to snap up nine new recruits to improve his playing squad.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

Joe Rodon, Djed Spence, Ilia Gruev, Karl Darlow, Glen Kamara, Joel Piroe, Ethan Ampadu, Sam Byram, and Jaidon Anthony were all signed either permanently or on loan.

However, Angus Kinnear has revealed that there could be funds available to Farke for him to make further additions to the group during the January transfer window, which could take the head coach into double figures for signings this season.

With this in mind, the ex-Borussia Monchengladbach boss must reignite his interest in a deal to sign Granada forward Myrto Uzuni at the start of next year.

Leeds United transfer news – Myrto Uzuni

The Whites were named as one of a number of interested parties in the Albania international ahead of the 2023/24 campaign following his impressive displays last term.

AS reported that Leeds, Brentford, Southampton, Stade Reims, Galatasaray, and unnamed Saudi Arabian sides, were all keen, or had been keen, on the talented attacker.

He has a release clause worth €25m (£21.8m) in his current contract with the Spanish side, which was €15m (£10.5m) prior to their promotion earlier this year.

The LaLiga outfit were able to keep hold of him over the summer as they demanded his full release clause from any interested clubs, which allowed them to bat off approaches for his services.

Albania international Myrto Uzuni.

However, it remains to be seen how much they would want for the 28-year-old forward in January as he has had a mixed start to the 2023/24 season.

Leeds are currently third in the Championship and sit eight points behind Ipswich Town and Leicester City, who occupy the two automatic promotion places.

If the Whites can overtake one of them to be in the driving seat for promotion by the time January rolls around, then they could be an attractive option for Uzuni, and any other potential targets, with the allure of a return to the Premier League possibly being a strong selling point.

Farke must attempt to convince both Granada and Uzuni to agree to the move as the Albanian wizard would thrive alongside Georgino Rutter in attack, due to the French gem's exceptional creativity.

Rutter's season in numbers

The 21-year-old centre-forward has proven himself to be a terrific Championship performer with his ability to consistently split open opposition defences both with his dribbling and passing qualities.

Rutter endured a rough first five months at Elland Road after he was thrust into the midst of a relegation battle and played under three different managers – Jesse Marsch, Javi Gracia, and Sam Allardyce – following a club-record £35.5m switch from Hoffenheim.

He was unable to hit the ground running in English football, understandably so under the circumstances, and ended the season with zero goals and one assist in 11 Premier League appearances for the club.

The drop down to the Championship and the appointment of Farke, who has deployed an attractive, possession-based, style of football, has allowed the French talent to hit his stride in Yorkshire this season.

Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.

Rutter has racked up three goals and five assists in 14 league starts for the Whites so far this season, and no Leeds player has managed more assists than him.

The former Bundesliga prospect ranks within the top 1% of his positional Championship peers this term for assists (0.36), xAG (0.47), and shot-creating actions (4.74) per 90.

However, the exciting hotshot may feel aggrieved to only have five assists to his name as he has created 15 'big chances' and accrued 6.5 xAG, which suggests that his fellow attackers have not made the most of his creativity.

Leeds must now secure a swoop to sign Uzuni in January as he has the potential to thrive alongside the forward as someone who could finish off the opportunities that Rutter creates.

The statistics that show why Myrto Uzuni could thrive with Rutter

The Albania international has had a solid start to life in the Spanish top-flight with Granada this season as he has racked up four goals and created three 'big chances' in 13 appearances so far.

However, his impressive form throughout the 2022/23 campaign in LaLiga 2 suggests that the superb winger could be a huge goalscoring threat for Leeds.

The 28-year-old sensation plundered an eye-catching 23 goals and five assists in 35 starts for Granada as they won promotion to LaLiga last term.

His spell in Spain has come off the back of a superb return of 36 goals and 14 assists in 67 appearances for Ferencvaros across two years in Hungary.

This means that the 5 foot 10 gem has produced 64 goals and 20 assists in 134 outings in all competitions for Ferencvaros and Granada combined since the start of the 2020/21 campaign.

Uzuni, who was once hailed as "impressive" by journalist Josh Bunting whilst representing his country, has proven himself to be a consistent scoring threat over the past few seasons, in Hungary and Spain.

This suggests that the Granada winger would thrive alongside Rutter as the French magician has the quality to provide him with a constant stream of chances in the final third.

They could, therefore, be a terrific duo at the top end of the pitch for Leeds as Uzuni could become a lethal scorer with the help of the France U21 international's creative brilliance, which is why Farke should reignite his interest in the LaLiga talent at the start of next year.

Leeds must rue selling "animal" who has seven assists in 23/24

Leeds United were relegated from the Premier League last season and are now flying high in the Championship.

An instant return to the top flight could be on the cards, however, their initial relegation back to the second tier could have been avoided.

During his time at the club, director of football Victor Orta made some gut-wrenching decisions and the most costly of those saw him sack Marcelo Bielsa and replace him with Jesse Marsch.

The American didn't endear himself in a positive light to the Elland Road faithful and his downfall in West Yorkshire began with a questionable recruitment strategy.

Whilst failing to replace Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha stole the headlines, it was a decision to sell an academy graduate that went under the radar as Leif Davis was sold to Ipswich Town for £1m in July 2022.

Leif Davis Leeds statistics

Leeds captured the promising full-back from League Two side Morecambe in 2018 and was instantly thrown into Carlos Corberan's under-23 side.

The Yorkshire club, who had just finished 13th in the Championship, had already snapped up Sam Dalby (Leyton Orient), Ryan Edmondson (York City) and Jordan Stevens (Forest Green) from lower league clubs.

After making an instant impression in the Whites' underage groups as an explosive left-back, he was promoted to the first-team setup by the newly appointed Bielsa and debuted in the dramatic 3-2 victory over Aston Villa in December 2018.

Despite making his major breakthrough, an injury towards the end of that campaign restricted him to mere late cameos against Derby County, Rotherham United and Swansea City.

Leeds, after finishing third, lost to Frank Lampard's Derby County in the Play-Off semi-finals.

Whilst they would secure promotion to the Premier League during a season which was curtailed by Covid-19 in the following, Davis would only feature across two starts and three substitute appearances.

The youngster realised that his best chance of playing regularly was elsewhere, moving to Championship side Bournemouth on loan in the 2021/22 campaign, where he made 15 appearances before sealing a permanent switch to the Tractor Boys in 2022.

Leif Davis' record at Ipswich Town

Once described by Bielsa as "a great player, full of future, resources and skills", Davis certainly inflicted those talents onto an Ipswich side vying for promotion out of League One.

An incredible source of quality down the left flank, the Englishman amassed a whopping 14 assists – the most of any player in the division – as his side were promoted back to the second tier.

Ipswich defender Leif Davis.

In Kieran McKenna's swashbuckling system, the flying full-back utilizes his explosive pace, effortless ball-carrying and devastating ammunition down the left wing.

Ipswich have taken to the Championship like a duck to water, sitting level on points with Leicester City in the automatic promotion places while Davis has made a huge contribution to their fast start, accumulating seven assists in his opening 15 matches.

The "animal", as dubbed by former manager Scott Parker, has produced a staggering 24 assists from left back in 54 appearances for the East Anglian side and his extraordinary output places him as the arguably most creative player in the division.

By contrast, Leeds' current starting full-backs, Archie Gray and Sam Byram, have only managed one assist between them in 30 matches, with Leeds ruing the decision to sell such a quality asset on the cheap.

Vihari the difference as another spin-choke takes India B to final

The result rendered the last group match between India A and India C, on Thursday, a virtual semi-final

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Oct-2018Hanuma Vihari works into the leg side•Getty Images

Hanuma Vihari struck his third successive List-A fifty and his second of the Deodhar Trophy to lift India B to 231 for 9 before their spinners asphyxiated India C through the middle overs to register a comfortable 30-run win in Delhi. The result booked India B’s place in the final, rendering the last group match between India A and India C a virtual semi-final.Vihari came to the middle at 47 for 2, after Rajneesh Gurbani sent the openers Prashant Chopra and Mayank Agarwal back. But it was not long before India C seized the control as captain Shreyas Iyer, Manoj Tiwary and Rohit Rayudu fell cheaply to leave the side precariously placed at 90 for 5. After Gurbani did the early damage, left-arm spinner Pappu Roy, aided by medium-pacer Vijay Shankar made inroads through the middle stages, having Rayudu caught behind for 1 and Pappu accounting for Iyer and Tiwary.Vihari and wicketkeeper Ankush Bains then stitched a 60-run stand, the highest of the match, to breathe life into the innings. After Bains was bowled by Suresh Raina for 25, K Gowtham offered Vihari a helping hand with a 19-ball 18 that included two sixes. But neither batsman could go on and provide a final flourish as Gowtham fell to Pappu in the 39th over and Vihari fell to Gurbani for 76 in the 45th. With India B facing the prospect of being dismissed well inside 50 overs, Jaydev Unadkat and Shahbaz Nadeem joined hands and put together an unbeaten 36-run stand that proved match-defining.Things, however, could have been different had at least one of the four India C batsmen who crossed 30 gone on to get a more substantial score. But what an otherwise similar innings to the first one lacked was a Vihari-like contribution. It didn’t look that bad for India C despite the early loss of R Samarth for a painstaking 5 as Ajinkya Rahane and Shubman Gill added 44, albeit at a sedate pace. But once Rahane fell to Gowtham for a 61-ball 32, it triggered a cascading effect. Raina became Gowtham’s second victim, bowled for just 1 and Gill fell to the part-time spin of Tiwary for 36, as India C were reduced from 65 for 1 to 85 for 4.Part-time spin played a huge role in dismantling India C, as another threatening partnership, this time between Vijay and Suryakumar Yadav that added 48 in 51 balls, was broken by Iyer, who pinned Vijay lbw for a 34-ball 35. With 99 still needed for a win, spinners tightened the noose, as Gowtham had Ishan Kishan caught behind for 5 and then Tiwary hammered the final nail with the wicket of Suryakumar for 39. Much like Unadkat and Nadeem for India B, the ninth-wicket pair of Washington Sundar and Navdeep Saini fought valiantly to add 36, but the mounting required rate caught up with them as India C folded for 201 in the 49th over.

Lyon's thrift key to Australia pace attack – Hazlewood

The control from Australia’s offspinner could shape the series, especially at the opening two venues not expected to provide much reverse swing

Daniel Brettig in Adelaide03-Dec-20182:03

Want to test our bowling template against the best – Hazlewood

Australia’s chances of thriving against India this summer will rest as much upon the capacity of Nathan Lyon to restrain the touring team’s talented batting line-up as on the ability of the “big three” of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins to attack them.Entering a home Test series without the prolific run-making ability of Steven Smith and David Warner, both dominant performers against India at home during their last Australian visit in 2014-15, the capacity of the home side’s world-class bowling attack to cover for any resultant lack of runs will be pivotal to the outcome. But while Starc, vice-captain Hazlewood and Cummins have been, as is customary, tapered precisely towards the first Test of the season at Adelaide Oval from Thursday, it will be the complementary work of Lyon that will have a major bearing on whether or not the pacemen can sustain the level of speed, accuracy and hostility that so comprehensively undid England in 2017-18.That series was noteworthy for the collective way in which Australia’s bowlers hunted Joe Root’s men, and for how Lyon not only contributed to the flow of wickets, but cut down the runs so comprehensively – delivering an economy rate of 2.36 per over for 260.1 overs, more than 60 more than any other Australian bowler – that the pacemen benefited from attempts to lash out.”He’s the key for me with the four of us, you have Starcy who bowls shorter spells and sometimes Patty too so to have Nath, it even worked well two weeks ago when we played the shield game,” Hazlewood said. “Nathan pretty much bowled from one end after the new ball and we filtered through from the other end, it’s hard to get a fun off him and he takes wickets, it’s good to have that down the other end and he makes that group what it is.”That was the key last year, the partnerships. We always talk about batting in partnerships. The way we bowled it wasn’t about any individual, we all took 20 wickets plus the whole summer. Partnerships are a big one for us, always bowling for the guys following you. We’re all leaders in our own right.”One of the few occasions when a side has got on top of Lyon was during the fateful tour of South Africa earlier this year, where they were successful in taking him for 3.23 an over while seldom getting out in the process. The cumulative effect of this pressure release on the quicks was to be seen as the series wore on, leading the tourists to look evermore desperately for reverse swing in the absence of any wickets for Lyon.Nathan Lyon bowls•Getty Images

Australia have been dealing, one way or another, with the consequences of that search ever since, to the point that “taking care of the ball” has been a matter for plenty of discussion among the players left in their banned team-mates’ wake. Though Adelaide and Perth are known more for their assistance to seam and swing bowling of the conventional kind, Hazlewood said the task, if needed, would likely remain entrusted to a batsman such as Usman Khawaja or Aaron Finch.”To be honest the people who shine the ball are the ones who don’t sweat, it’s as simple as that,” Hazlewood said. “The bowlers sweat a lot when they bowl and you don’t want it getting wet, you want to keep it dry and shine it. It’s two guys who don’t sweat, simple as that”It’s pretty common sense. The rules are pretty clear now, it’s good to have it in black and white. This ground and Perth are not ideal for reverse swing so it’s more normal seam and swing. I don’t think it’s going to play a massive part in this game.”Among Hazlewood’s recent experiences was the odd sensation of bowling to Warner and Smith in the SCG nets as they continued their strange summer’s existence of ineligibility for anything more prestigious than club cricket. While it was noticeable to Hazlewood that both have had their reflexes dulled by facing slower bowlers at grade level, he also remarked on how quickly they were back into rhythm against deliveries fired down at 140kph or faster.”It’s been good, they’re probably a little bit behind the pace the first couple of overs just from playing the level of cricket they are playing and then stepping into the nets,” he said. “You can’t replicate 140kph in club cricket but it is amazing how quickly it takes them to get back where they were. Especially bowling to Smithy, I bowled to him a month back as well and he was a bit late on everything but in the space of 10 or 12 balls he gets back to that mark so quickly.”Hazlewood made his Test debut against India four summers ago in Brisbane, in a match rescheduled due to the aftermath of the death of Phillip Hughes. The uniquely testing, even traumatic nature of that season tested all involved, and though the circumstances arrayed against Australia this time around are rather different, the challenge of performing and winning in less than ideal circumstances is something Hazlewood is steeled for.”I feel a lot of extra excitement, potentially a debutant [Marcus Harris], it’s always good to have that around the group,” Hazlewood said. “It’s the excitement of the Australian summer coming around again there’s nothing better than playing Test cricket in Australia. Excitement is the main thing. We’ve got a couple of days’ training to fine tune a few things. A few guys have played a lot of cricket but excitement is the main thing.”I see the Indian line up as the best in the world, if not right up there, led by Virat and I think they feed a lot off him and how he goes about things. If we can make some early inroads in this first Test, it’s always crucial and the first innings. If we can get on top of them early hopefully that filters through the rest of the Test.”It places a little bit of pressure on us but I think the four guys really love that. They love that extra responsibility on them. We’re due for a big summer, I’m looking forward to it.”
