Livingstone smoulders amid Lancashire rubble

Eighteen wickets fell on the first day at Old Trafford but it was contrasting half-centuries from Liam Livingston and Dean Elgar that will live in the memory

County Championship Round-up: England hopefuls make their case

Recollections of a grey and rather heavy Manchester day on which 18 wickets fell should, one would think, be dominated by the exploits of bowlers. To be specific, we should laud the achievement of the Somerset seamers in dismissing Lancashire for a plainly inadequate 109 and then offer our congratulations to the home attack in limiting Somerset’s lead to a mere 44 runs, albeit that the visitors have two wickets in hand and the excellent Dean Elgar still at the crease.Yet while both sets of pace bowlers performed nobly on a testing pitch which nevertheless scarcely justified the fall of wickets with a frequency matched only by Italian governments, it will, perhaps, be two contrasting innings which spectators will remember when they reflect on a manic day at Emirates Old Trafford. The first of these was played by Lancashire’s stand-in skipper Liam Livingstone, who batted with exemplary responsibility when partnered by established batsmen before lunch and then glorious freedom when accompanied by the tail in the afternoon.Mind you, not too many of the top order hung around for long to admire their leader’s discipline. When Livingstone arrived at the wicket in the fourth over both Haseeb Hameed and Alex Davies had already been dismissed for ducks by fine balls from Josh Davey, Hameed edging the fifth delivery of the match to the wicketkeeper, Steven Davies, and Alex Davies being taken by Marcus Trescothick at slip.Nor was there any prolonged halt to the grisly procession of Lancashire batsmen. Having threatened to post inadequate first-innings totals in their previous two matches only to think better of it and mount remarkable recoveries instead, Lancashire finally did the job properly on the opening day of this game. As if to justify the darkest fears of their supporters, many of whom were watching their first cricket of 2017, Livingstone’s side put together their miserable total in 41.4 overs, less than a session and a half’s cricket. That said, Somerset’s attack offered a tough examination on a pitch which seemed to retain early moisture. Craig Overton bowled with pace and proper aggression to remove Luke Procter, Rob Jones and Dane Vilas in successive overs and when Ryan McLaren nicked Tim Groenewald to Elgar at slip the home side were 42 for 6. Time to check the record books and visit Old Trafford’s black museum, some thought, but Livingstone and Jordan Clark stopped the worst of the rot by adding 22 runs in 45 minutes of self-denial before lunch. After the interval, though, the tumble resumed, Clark miscuing Overton to Tom Abell at extra cover and Parry giving one of Instow’s finest his fifth wicket with a tame return catch. At which point Livingstone moved his batting up from second gear to fifth and he did so with a rapidity befitting one of cricket’s classiest young marques. Having used the wreckage of his team’s innings to show that there is far more to his game than short-form salvos, Livingstone tore into the Somerset bowling wherever possible scoring 40 runs off 32 balls in the afternoon session.Liam Livingstone played some acrobatic shots in his 68•Getty Images

Moreover, it might be noted that this innings of two halves against Somerset was watched by the national selector, James Whitaker. Livingstone is taking the careful plan of progression drawn up for him and tearing it up, a task he is achieving as much by his cricketing intelligence as by raw ability. It was thrilling to see him come down the wicket and smack Overton onto the first balcony of the Old Trafford pavilion; and it was remarkable to observe his ability to move from orthodoxy and the coaching book to ramps, scoops and other such exotica, albeit that by the time he was the last man out, caught at deep square leg by Jack Leach, Lancashire had not achieved a par total.Elgar’s effort, though, was quite as praiseworthy as Livngstone’s. The Somerset opener lost his partner when Trescothick had edged a fine ball from McLaren to the wicketkeeper but Elgar remained for the rest of the day, facing 151 balls and taking 214 minutes over his 66 not out.The South African excepted, Somerset’s batsmen found batting a tortuous business, especially against McLaren, who ran in with an obvious will and made the most of any help offered by the pitch. Lancashire’s overseas allrounder removed Tom Abell for a single and later accounted for both Peter Trego and Craig Overton in an evening session which seemed at one stage to offer the prospect of the home side batting again.Trego’s 52-run stand for the fifth wicket with Elgar had seemed to avert that possibility only for Procter to revive it by taking the wickets of Lewis Gregory and Davey with successive deliveries. When Overton’s wicket was taken by McLaren, seven overs were left in the day but Leach partnered Elgar calmly to close of play, when both players and spectators probably welcomed the chance to draw breath.

Leeds Could Land £40k-p/w Upgrade Who Bielsa Would’ve Loved

For much of the transfer window so far, the major talking point for Leeds United has been centred on outgoings, with new boss Daniel Farke facing something of a mass exodus following the club's return to the Championship.

The Whites have already seen the likes of Robin Koch, Brenden Aaronson, Marc Roca, Rasmus Kristensen and Rodrigo move on to pastures new – either on loan or on a permanent deal, in the case of the latter – with further departures seemingly expected amid interest in both Wilfried Gnonto and Jack Harrison, among others.

That raft of outgoings has only heightened the need for fresh faces at Elland Road this summer, with it looking as if the newly-relegated side are finally beginning to make moves in the transfer market.

What are the latest Leeds transfer rumours?

The latest indication is that the Yorkshire giants are closing in on a deal for Chelsea ace, Ethan Ampadu, while Farke is also seemingly nearing a reunion with ex-Norwich City defender, Sam Byram, after previously coaching the 29-year-old at Carrow Road.

There may be further additions to come, however, with Football Insider having reported last week that Leeds are interested in a move for Nottingham Forest forward, Emmanuel Dennis, with the Nigerian marksman looking set for a change of scenery after just a solitary season at the City Ground.

A more recent report from the same publication has since revealed that Forest would be open to letting the 25-year-old leave the club this summer, despite having splashed out £20m to sign him from Watford a year ago.

How many goals has Emmanuel Dennis scored?

Despite his recent woes at the City Ground – where he scored just two goals and registered only two assists in the Premier League – the former Club Brugge machine had been a reliable goalscoring presence throughout his career prior to that.

Lauded as a "stunning player" by journalist Josh Bunting during his time at Vicarage Road, the 5 foot 10 hitman notably racked up ten goals and six assists in just 37 games during his solitary season with the Hornets, having previously contributed 42 goals and assists in 116 games during his time in Belgium.

It was that stint with Pro League side that initially piqued the interest of those at Elland Road, with reports back in the summer of 2020 having suggested that then-boss Marcelo Bielsa was keen on signing the £40k-per-week menace.

While no move came to fruition at the time, German football editor Daniel Pinder went on to discuss the benefit that signing Dennis would have for Bielsa and co a year later, with the transfer insider telling Football Fancast that the Nigerian's willing work ethic and ability to press would potentially make him a better fit than Patrick Bamford in attack:

"He definitely offers something different to Bamford as he plays on the shoulder of defenders, and if the defence is playing a high line then he'll happily make runs in behind them.

"Bielsa likes his strikers to press from the front and Dennis does this well and he's shown some good finishes during his time with Club Brugge, so I think Leeds could be a decent fit for him."

While a deal would likely have suited Bielsa, a move this time around could also be of use to Farke in order help find a centre-forward upgrade, with current number nine, Bamford, having been plagued by injury of late.

The Englishman has scored just six league goals across the last two seasons combined, while Dennis has netted 12 top-flight goals in that time, having also shown his ability to feature on the flanks when required.

With regard to that knack for defending from the front, Dennis notably averages 2.13 tackles per 90 across the last 365 days, while Bamford, by contrast, averages just 0.53 for that same metric.

With the Forest speedster also more adept at driving forward with the ball at his feet – as shown by his superior average for successful take-ons (2.25 v 0.65) – then it is clear to see just what an all-round upgrade he would be for the Yorkshire side.

Having seen Bielsa fail to get his man, perhaps Leeds can finally strike a deal under Farke this time around.

Ingram intrudes on Vince's record day

James Vince masterfully compiled Hampshire’s highest one-day score but to no avail as Colin Ingram and Chris Cooke pulled off a sensational victory for Glamorgan

James Vince masterfully scored Hampshire’s highest ever one-day score but Glamorgan heroes Colin Ingram and Chris Cooke pulled off a stunning run chase to steal victory at the Ageas Bowl.Captain Vince beat Gordon Greenidge’s previous best of 177 in 1975 – as he struck an outrageous 178 – which also marked his best career score. But Ingram crashed a brutal century before Cooke got the hosts over the line with a matchwinning unbeaten 59 from 27 balls, with the visitors chasing 332 with a three wicket victory. After losing 30 minutes to rain, with the match dropping to 49 overs a side, Glamorgan won the toss and inserted their hosts on a lovely looking batting track.Rilee Rossouw, hot on the heels of a swashbuckling 156 against Somerset on Wednesday, blasted early boundaries to the fence. But after a rapid start, where Rossouw scored 35 in 27 balls, Hampshire faltered from 41 without loss to 54 for 3.Marchant de Lange had Tom Alsop caught behind, Rossouw was bowled with a beautiful ball which clipped the top of off-stump before George Bailey jabbed to point two balls later. That saw homegrown stars Vince and Dawson aligned in the middle and they rebuilt the innings in textbook style – slowly building up the foundations as they dropped down to almost three runs an over.Vince flashed into life as they settled and reached fifty in 59-balls, while Dawson passed his 3000th List A run.Vince continued to crack deliveries to the boundary at will, with 18 fours eventually hit, and moved past a fifth career century – brought up in a speedy 98 balls.Dawson, after clocking an anchoring 74, was bowled by Michael Hogan, ending a record-breaking fourth wicket stand for Hampshire and started a second mini-collapse.Vince, after dispatching five maximums, was dropped on the fine-leg boundary but finally fell when he was bowled by de Lange as he tried to give himself room – getting out for 178 from 138 balls.Sean Ervine was the next to go when he slapped to mid-on to hand de Lange his maiden one-day five-wicket haul – ending with figures of 5 for 59.Ian Holland and Lewis McManus scampered quick runs at the death to give the hosts a handsome 332.Glamorgan struggled to get going and lost David Lloyd caught behind to Kyle Abbott in the fifth over. Vince continued his fine match by plucking a stunning one-handed catch over his head to catch Will Bragg, before Andrew Salter was stumped off a wide to hand Mason Crane his first scalp of the match. It all pointed towards a Hampshire win, but Kiran Carlson and Ingram put on 73 for the fourth wicket before the former was tempted down the tack by Crane to be stumped.South African big hitter Ingram clattered six sixes on his way to a 70-ball century – which saw him pass 7000 List A runs – and set up a thrilling finale. The Crane and McManus stumping union combined again to see Jacques Rudolph depart for 26 – with the required run-rate still at 12 an over.Chris Cooke smashed 21 from the 47th over to set up a nail-biting final three overs with 39 still needed.Ingram edged thickly to backward point to fall for a thrilling 115 but successive maximums from Cooke made it 22 from the last two overs.Craig Meschede handed Dawson a simple catch at long on, with nine needed from the final six balls, but Cooke chipped a six off Topley to pull off a remarkable win with a ball to spare.

One eye on weather, one on India's middle order

Rain is expected again in the afternoon in Port-of-Spain where India would want to assess the strength of the batsmen they employ at No. 4 and below

India will be pleased with Ajinkya Rahane being among the runs

Big PictureNine am starts in a bilateral series, after a world tournament has ended, with rain in the air, is asking a lot of a spectator. But for those die-hard fans who will still make the trip to the Queens Park Oval, be advised. Port-of-Spain is expected to receive thundershowers on Sunday afternoon, so don’t be surprised if you hit your head on a big red sign in front of the ground that says, “nothing to see here”. The sensible lot would take the time to sleep in, but the players don’t really have that luxury.India, for example, might not have anyone to grumble “five more minutes, coach,” to on this tour, but they do have a few rookies they’d want to get in shape. Left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav was handed a debut on Friday but he didn’t even step on to the field with the match being washed out. Uncapped wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was not in the XI, but considering the low stakes, it might be useful to give him as many starts as possible to see if he could fit in the 2019 World Cup puzzle. In any case, it is starting to seem like the only way India can check on a middle-order batsman is if they can promote him to open. Typically it is their top order that fetches the bulk of the runs in ODIs – on Friday, Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane contributed 149 out of 199 before the rain came down.West Indies – from 39.2 overs of play – looked steady, and their bowlers were especially clever against Virat Kohli. Pitching it short of a length and outside off stump – on a surface that gave them a little extra lift – they forced the India captain to return with a strike rate of 68. He couldn’t get on top of the ball to bring his powerful wrists into play and he was rarely offered the drive as a means of escape. Take this attack lightly at your peril.Form guideWest Indies WLLLW (completed matches, most recent first)
India LWWLWIn the spotlightAt 20, Alzarri Joseph generates pace effortlessly, not unlike Kagiso Rabada, who already leads South Africa’s attack in all formats. But that is only an asset when combined with discipline, and some creativity in the form of variations. Joseph showed with his dismissal of Rahane – an offcutter the batsman simply did not see coming – that he is more than ready for modern cricket. The merits in retaining Yuvraj Singh, even though he is 35, become apparent when he is in form. A career-best 150 against England and a 29-ball fifty against Pakistan showcased the best of his timing. In fact, since his comeback in January 2017, he has averaged 45 and struck at 102.24. He might have to keep up that level of performance to ward off competition from the likes of Pant, Manish Pandey (injured) and KL Rahul (injured), though.Team newsConsidering the last match they played ended in a no-result, West Indies might want to persist with the same XI.West Indies (probable): 1 Evin Lewis, 2 Kieran Powell, 3 Shai Hope (wk), 4 Jonathan Carter, 5 Jason Mohammed, 6 Roston Chase, 7 Jason Holder (capt), 8 Ashley Nurse, 9 Alzarri Joseph, 10 Devendra Bishoo, 11 Miguel Cummins,India came to the Caribbean with two uncapped players. One of them – Kuldeep – has debuted already and the other – Pant – would be looking forward to a first ODI cap as well.India (probable): 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (wk), 6 Kedar Jadhav, 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Kuldeep Yadav, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Umesh YadavPitch and conditionsBefore the first ODI, Jeffrey Dujon described the pitch at the Queens Park Oval as a “tie-dye t-shirt” by Jeffrey Dujon, implying that it was difficult to assess. The one thing he was certain of was that it would spin in the first innings and flatten out later.Stats and trivia The average run-rate batting first at the venue across 66 matches is 4.86. That translates to an average score of 243. Dhawan and Rahane’s last five ODI partnerships read: 83, 125, 56, 112, 132 Jason Holder has 48 wickets as West Indies captain – the same as Courtney Walsh

Tottenham: Spurs Pull Plug On Major Signing For Ange

Tottenham Hotspur have pulled the plug on signing Galatasary defender Victor Nelsson with Ange Postecoglou's side "no longer in talks" this summer.

Who will Tottenham sign?

Spurs are attempting to back Postecoglou with more fresh faces, but with just two more games of their pre-season remaining and the start of 2023/2024 just next month, they will want to make more headway soon.

The north Londoners have seen goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, midfielder James Maddison and winger Manor Solomon join the club this window – following on from permanent deals for Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski.

Next on chairman Daniel Levy's transfer agenda is the signing of a two star centre-backs, and there have been a succession of defenders linked.

Postecoglou has admitted that is something the club are currently looking at, coming after Spurs conceded a pretty woeful 63 league goals last campaign.

"That's definitely our intention, absolutely," said Postecoglou when asked about signing new defenders.

"We've been working on it for a while and we'll definitely try to get it done as quickly as possible.

"I don't think it's any secret about some of the areas we needed to strengthen. Some of it I identified early on. The goalkeeper was one and central defence is another.

"In terms of the other boys, we've got a big squad but my view is I wanted to bring them along and just work with them, get some clarity in my head and give clarity to them."

Tottenham have been seriously interested and in talks for Micky van de Ven of Wolfsburg, but reports from The Athletic this morning suggest a deal could now be off.

However, rhe long list of alternative centre-backs linked with a move to N17 includes Edmond Tapsoba of Bayer Leverkusen, Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo, Barcelona'a Clement Lenglet, Juventus defender Gleison Bremer and Nelsson.

On the latter defender, there were reports of Spurs nearing a deal to sign the 24-year-old, but journalist Charlie Gordon of The Daily Express has a contrary update.

Taking to Twitter, Gordon says Tottenham are "no longer in talks" to sign Nelsson – with Postecoglou's side seemingly giving up on a deal.

"Update on Victor Nelsson," wrote the reporter.

"Told that Tottenham are no longer in talks for the Galatasaray CB, dismissing recent reports of an agreement between the clubs."

There is little background as to why Spurs have backed away, which we find bizarre considering his contract possesses an affordable £21 million release clause.

How good is Victor Nelsson?

The Denmark international, who featured at last year's 2022 World Cup in Qatar, has been a star player for Galatasary at club level.

Boasting some impressive stats from last season's Turkish Super Lig campaign, Nelsson made more blocks per 90 and won more battles in the air than any other Galatasary player (WhoScored).

An undroppable under manager Okan Buruk, Nelsson featured over more league minutes than any of his outfield teammates last campaign – surely highlighting his importance to Galatasary and quality as a player.

The former FC Copenhagen ace has been called one the "star player" of Galatasary by sections of the Turkish press, making Spurs' decision to back off a rather curious one.

Perhaps, and this is just speculation, they edging towards an agreement for other targets like Lenglet or Tapsoba.

Our batsmen need to identify what risks to take – Chandimal

And with left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara with a shot to make his Test debut, the Sri Lanka captain said he was looking forward to the partnership with the other veteran left-armer Rangana Herath

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Colombo02-Aug-2017Having been appointed to the captaincy in a time of cricketing crisis, Dinesh Chandimal finds himself scrambling to prevent another one. He only walked out of hospital a few days ago, after having had pneumonia, but thanks in part to an ICC-approved inhaler, he has come back to take control of his side.Just don’t tell him that Sri Lanka are outgunned and that a 0-3 result is possible. When this suggestion was made to him on the eve of the game, Chandimal’s response was emphatic – or at least it was as emphatic as Chandimal gets.”Who is saying it will be 0-3?” he asked. “You can’t say that. India are a very talented team, but we aren’t going to lose 0-3.” What had been a good-natured exchange with the media gained a hint of an edge with that question. “We are looking to level the series and then go to the third match. We have the determination to do that.”But it might take a little more than determination. For one, Sri Lanka’s batsmen will need to resist India’s spinners on a surface that is likely to offer more turn than the Galle track provided. Even on an excellent batting surface in the first Test, Sri Lanka could not make 300 once, and failed to make it to the second new ball in either innings.”We just want to improve as a batting unit,” Chandimal said. “Everyone has scored 50-60 runs, but they couldn’t make the big ones. That’s what we’ve been discussing in the meetings and practices. Hopefully in this match we can do a better job.”If the track is sufficiently bowler-friendly, Sri Lanka may also employ the “hit out before you get out” strategy that has often been employed on lively surfaces in Sri Lanka. The thinking on such tracks – which have recently proliferated on the island – is that an unplayable ball will inevitably come to get you, so make your runs before then. It was a strategy most notably used to good effect in the Galle Test against India in 2015, when Chandimal’s rapid 162 helped overturn a 192-run deficit . Angelo Mathews and Kusal Mendis had also prospered by batting aggressively on turning tracks against Australia last year.”We’ve been preparing for turning pitches, and playing reverse sweeps and sweeps in training,” Chandimal said. “We always do the tough things in practice. When we go to the middle it might be helpful as a batsman.”When we play against a team as good as India, we will have to take a risk in some places. We need to think as batsmen about where we take those risks. If we can identify that, we’ll be able to score a lot of runs against a team like that.”Because a pitch that takes turn is expected, Sri Lanka also appear keen to field two left-arm spinners, including would-be debutant Malinda Pushpakumara. A prolific wicket-taker in domestic cricket, with 558 first-class dismissals to his name, Sri Lanka hope Pushpakumara will eventually become a replacement for Rangana Herath. For now, Sri Lanka are hoping to give him an apprenticeship under the most successful left-arm spinner in the game.”It’s a really good opportunity if Malinda plays, to benefit from Rangana’s experience in the middle and the dressing room,” Chandimal said. “That’s what we want to do. I hope both are going to do really good things.”

Chelsea: Poch Could Now Sign Bargain Moises Caicedo Alternative In £20m "Lion"

Chelsea are on the hunt for midfield reinforcements this summer and now a fresh update has emerged on a potential transfer target who could be the perfect alternative to Moises Caicedo.

What's the latest on Chelsea's interest in Tyler Adams?

According to The Times (as relayed by The Daily Mail), the Blues are now interested in signing Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams this summer.

As per the report, the London giants have added Adams to their shortlist of alternatives should they be unable to secure the signature of the Brighton and Hove Albion star this summer, with Mauricio Pochettino intent on bringing in new additions to bolster the midfield presence at Stamford Bridge.

Read the latest Chelsea transfer news HERE…

How good is Tyler Adams?

The departures of Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount and N'Golo Kante this summer have significantly weakened the experience and quality in midfield ahead of the upcoming Premier League season, so bringing in much-needed reinforcements will likely be the top priority for the new Chelsea boss.

The West London club couldn't maintain their high expectations over last season, finishing 12th in the Premier League, struggling to make an impact on the European stage and failing to qualify for Champions League football, meaning there is a real opportunity for Pochettino to focus on domestic competition and the squad rebuild.

As a result, the signing of Adams could be a great piece of business for Chelsea this summer and would present a much cheaper alternative to their top target Caicedo who has an ever-rising £100m price tag, whereas the Leeds star is believed to have a much cheaper £20m relegation release clause, according to The Athletic.

Despite being relegated with the west Yorkshire outfit last season, Adams was a stand-out performer in the Leeds squad executing a hard-working attitude, sound leadership skills and outstanding defensive strengths in the centre of the pitch, all of which will be attractive attributes to Pochettino in his search for the right midfield additions.

tyler-adams-leeds-premier-league-chelsea-transfers

As per FBref, the USMNT captain ranked in the top 17% of his positional peers in the Premier League per 90 minutes for tackles won, percentage of dribblers tackled, blocks, interceptions, ball recoveries and percentage of aerial duels won, proving that he is a valuable asset in the deep defensive midfield role.

Not only that, when comparing the 24-year-old's output to Caicedo's last season, the pair came close in a number of key attributes including pass completion (82.5% v 88.5%), progressive passes (5.68 v 6.28), tackles (3.27 v 2.87), interceptions (1.46 v 1.61) and aerial duels won (1.04 v 1.06), per 90 minutes played.

Adams has been the recipient of high praise over his first season in the English top-flight due to his positive performances in the disjointed team at Elland Road, with TEAMtalk journalist James Marshment outlining the midfielder's leadership qualities:

"Tyler Adams – a lion on the pitch; a dignified, intelligent, humble and politically savvy person off it. He'll go a long way that lad."

With that being said, if Pochettino is looking to bolster Chelsea's defensive presence on a stricter budget, there is no doubt that Adams would be a worthy alternative to Caicedo this summer.
