Ranking the Top Premier League Goalscorers by Cost per Goal

The Premier League is the most valuable league in the world, worth an estimated £14.4 billion, as of January 2023, and with every passing year, top-flight clubs spend more and more in the transfer window.

Despite the fees increasing, some clubs are still finding great value players and transfers all across the pitch and this list will be showcasing just how smart these clubs' transfer business has been by calculating each of the top 11 goalscorers cost per goal from this season.

11 Martin Odegaard: £2 million cost per goal

martin-odegaard-arsenal

Martin Odegaard kicks off this list as the worst value for money top goalscorer this season, with his 15 goals this season leading to a cost per goal of £2 million due to his initial £30 million transfer from Real Madrid in the summer of 2021.

The Arsenal captain enjoyed a stellar season for the North London side, ending with the third highest-scoring season from any midfielder in Premier League history, just behind Yaya Toure and Frank Lampard

10 Ollie Watkins: £1.86 million cost per goal

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.

Ollie Watkins enjoyed his finest season in an Aston Villa shirt, but ranks 10th on this list, with his 15 goals this season leading to a cost per goal of £1.86 million due to his £28 million transfer from Brentford.

The England international's goals helped fire Aston Villa to European football for the first time in over a decade.

9 Mohamed Salah: £1.79 million cost per goal

Mohamed Salah is Liverpool's attacking talisman

Mohamed Salah had yet another strong campaign for Liverpool, but rounds out the bottom three of this list, with his 19 goals this season leading to a cost per goal of £1.79 million thanks to his £34 million transfer from Roma back in the summer of 2017.

The Egyptian produced his joint-lowest goal tally in the Premier League this season, which is a testament to how consistently good Liverpool's number 11 has been for the past 6 seasons.

8 Aleksander Mitrovic: £1.57 million cost per goal

Aleksander Mitrovic enjoyed his finest Premier League campaign to date, and ranks eighth on this list, with his 14 goals this campaign leading to a cost per goal of £1.57 million due to his £22 million move from Newcastle United in July 2018.

Mitrovic only made 24 appearances in the Premier League this season due to serving an eight-game suspension, so Fulham fans will be excited to see what the Serbian could produce should he be available for more games

7 Erling Haaland: £1.41 million cost per goal

erling-haaland-manchester-city

Erling Haaland tore the Premier League apart this season, but ranks seventh on this list, as despite his record-breaking 36 goals this season, his £51 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund last summer means the Norweigan's cost per goal ended up being £1.41 million.

Haaland is the first golden boot winner in Premier League history to score more goals than appearances made.

6 Callum Wilson: £1.11 million cost per goal

Newcastle's Callum Wilson celebrating a goal.

Callum Wilson was Newcastle's top scorer as they qualified for the Champions League for the first time since 2003, and ranks sixth on this list, with his 18 goals this season leading to a £1.11 million cost per goal thanks to his £20 million move from Bournemouth in the summer of 2020.

The forward enjoyed his highest-scoring Premier League campaign in his career as he made the 30+ appearances for only the third time in his top-flight career.

5 Gabriel Martinelli: £400k cost per goal

gabriel-martinelli-arsenal-chelsea

Gabriel Martinelli enjoyed a career breakout season this season for the Gunners, and sits fifth on this list, with his 15 goals after his £6 million move from Ituano in the summer of 2019 resulting in a cost per goal of £400k.

The Brazillian was fantastic on the wing this season and matched the record for most goals from a Brazilian in a Premier League season.

4 Ivan Toney: £250k cost per goal

Ivan Toney finishsed as the third top scorer in the Premier League this campaign with 20 goals, and ended up with a cost per goal of £250k due to the £5 million transfer fee Brentford paid Peterborough back in 2020.

The English forward was enjoying arguably the best season of his career before his eight-month suspension for betting offences came into effect.

3 Bukayo Saka: £0 cost per goal

Bukayo Saka for Arsenal

Bukayo Saka is the lowest ranking of the three players with a £0 cost per goal, due to his 14 goals this season being the lowest of the three academy products.

The English winger was nominated for Premier League Young Player of the Season and was one of the club's most influential players as they challenged Manchester City for the Premier League title.

2 Marcus Rashford: £0 cost per goal

Manchester United'sMarcusRashford

Marcus Rashford is the runner-up on this list, with his 16 goals this campaign resulting in a higher valued £0 cost per goal.

The Manchester United academy product was the club's top scorer as they achieved third place finish, earning Champions League football and a Carabao Cup success for the first time since 2017.

Marsh LBW correctly tracked – EagleEye

The custodians of EagleEye have stood by the projection that led to Mitchell Marsh being dismissed in Perth, despite a chorus of criticism from former players and captains

Mitchell Marsh’s hotly-debated LBW on the final day of the Perth Test was correctly tracked from its initial point of impact on the allrounder’s front toe, the custodians of EagleEye have confirmed. The decision, which was reversed from Aleem Dar’s initial verdict of not out due to the widening of the zone in which the stumps can be projected to hit by the ICC earlier this year, was openly questioned by a succession of television commentators and also Australia’s captain, Steven Smith, who said it was like Kagiso Rabada was bowling “leg-spin”.The former captain Michael Clarke stated on Channel Nine’s cricket coverage that he was certain the ball was going down the leg side. “I was certain that was missing the stumps,” Clarke said. “When you look at that replay, I thought it was definitely swinging too far and missing the leg stump.”He’ll be really disappointed with that. It has clipped his toe, then clipped his pad, and then got onto the bat. But what I don’t agree with is the line of the delivery once the ball hits him on the toe … I believe the line of that delivery is going down and missing leg stump.”Similar sentiments were echoed by Clarke’s predecessor Ricky Ponting, while another former captain in Mark Taylor – until recently a member of the ICC cricket committee that has long advocated the use of the DRS and ball-tracking – offered his own criticism of the projection. However Ian Taylor, head of the New Zealand company Animation Research that provides EagleEye for Nine’s broadcast, told ESPNcricinfo that the tracking used for Marsh’s dismissal had been reviewed and not found to be in error, either in terms of the projection reached or the process used to get there.”I talked to my guys [in Perth] and we talked to the ICC and showed the process we went through, and we’re happy with it,” Taylor said. “They had a really good pitching point off the pitch, and a really good contact point on the shoe, it wasn’t on the pad. They felt confident they could extrapolate from those two points to make the prediction.”They have the choice there of saying they think there was insufficient data, but they saw it really clearly and it didn’t continue out on that line [down leg], it hit the foot right in front of middle stump. We saw the impact on the toe before anyone else did, and we saw the impact on the toe with our four cameras, and our guys confirmed it with the HotSpot guys sitting with them. That’s where the projection was made, the line from the bounce to the foot, to the stumps.”Taylor offered an open invitation to any sceptical commentators, officials or even umpires to visit the technology operators and see things for themselves – not unlike the process by which the BCCI recently approved the use of ball-tracking as part of the DRS, a system to be used in the just-begun Test series between India and England.”What surprises me is so many people can make a call straight away with just seeing the replay from the end-on view, when we’re going through four super slo-mo cameras and HotSpot,” Taylor said. “That was the process they went through. I fully respect the guys who spent their whole careers out in the middle, it’s an instinct they have and that umpires have.”We definitely don’t dismiss that and we take very seriously the views of those people. Our doors were open to all of the commentators to come down at lunchtime – we had people wait there because we thought someone might. We’ve also re-affirmed to the ICC and all the umpires as well that the door is always open, come on down and talk it through so we all learn from it.”Technology operators have advocated for some time that either the third umpire or an ICC-accredited official sit alongside those working HotSpot, EagleEye/HawkEye or other devices to provide clearer lines of accountability.”The issue for us is if we did this properly with a third umpire who was trained and there [with the technology operators], he could have made the call that my guys made,” he said. “That’s what we talk about – here’s all the information we’ve got, and you make a call whether you want us to project this on or not, because you’re an umpire.”The argument we have about a third umpire or ICC-accredited person who sits with our guys, the third umpire sitting up in the box does not know what’s going on down in our room. Who’s talking, what we’re seeing, what we’re looking at, what we’re replaying and what our thought process is. We’ve always argued if we had a fully qualified person from the ICC sitting in that room with everybody, we would go with that.”

Renshaw saves parents a dash across Brisbane

Matt Renshaw’s dismissal for 71 meant that his parents did not need to make a trip across Brisbane to get to the ground

Midway through the second session, Matt Renshaw danced down the pitch and shovelled Yasir Shah over midwicket for three. Already Renshaw had raised the bat to his home crowd upon reaching his maiden Test half-century. Now he was moving into the 70s. A hometown Test hundred was beginning to seem within his reach. And a cross-town dash was starting to look necessary for his parents, Ian and Alison. The Renshaws had been in Adelaide for their son’s Test debut last month, and might have been expected to be in the crowd for his first Test at his home ground. But instead they were several kilometres away, watching Renshaw’s sister Hannah graduate from her Masters of Architecture degree at the University of Queensland.”Matthew’s had his debut in Adelaide, so we’ll be there, very, very proud of what she [Hannah] has done,” Alison Renshaw told earlier this week. Ian Renshaw added that Matt was perhaps relieved not to have to sit through his sister’s three-hour ceremony: “But as we said, ‘we’ve waited three hours for you to bat and then you’ve been out first ball’.”At stumps, having fallen for 71 when he edged behind off Wahab Riaz, Renshaw explained that he understood his parents’ prioritising.”They came to Adelaide and Hannah’s graduation is a really big thing for her, so I think it’s good that they went and saw her,” Renshaw said at stumps. “Unfortunately, I couldn’t still be in when they finished there and they couldn’t head over.”What would it have taken for them to rush across Brisbane and find their way into the Gabba?”They told me I needed to be 80 not out at the dinner break, but I couldn’t do that. I let them down,” he joked. There was, however, one “Renshaw” in the crowd. Some time ago, Renshaw had purchased a ticket for the Gabba Test, not expecting to be part of Australia’s side. He was meant to be sitting with a group of friends from the Toombul Cricket Club, where Renshaw plays in Brisbane, and some of those mates chose to honour his call-up by filling his seat with a mannequin adorned with a print-out of Renshaw’s face.”It was a bit strange seeing my face on a mannequin when I was out there batting,” Renshaw said. “It probably took my mind off the game for a little bit, but it was good fun from the boys.”

Liverpool Could Sign ‘Magic’ £26m PL Star At Anfield

Liverpool are keeping a watchful eye on Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze's situation this summer as sporting director Jorg Schmadtke considers lodging a summer transfer offer.

What's the latest on Eberechi Eze to Liverpool?

According to recent reports, Jurgen Klopp's outfit are "planning to check" on the 24-year-old this summer as they plan to recraft their midfield following the departures of James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Fellow Premier League sides Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are all said to be interested in the England international, with the Eagles willing to talk business for around €30m (£26m).

A mercurial midfielder with dazzling skills, Eze would be a stellar addition to the Anfield ranks, and with just two years left on his current deal, his club might seek to secure maximum value with haste.

How good is Eberechi Eze?

Considering Liverpool's problems throughout the 22/23 campaign stemmed from the stagnancy of a midfield depleted of energy and with a pervading loss of belief, signing a progressive menace in Eze, who finished the term atop the crest of a wave, could be an auspicious move.

Hailed as "magic" by former Palace teammate Christian Benteke, Eze scored ten goals and supplied four assists in the Premier League last season, indeed coming into his own in the business end and plundering six strikes from his final nine matches.

Having recently made his international debut, the one-cap England star's box-surging prowess and potency could leave him as the perfect alternative to Celta Vigo prospect Gabri Veiga, who has been in scintillating form in LaLiga this season, scoring 11 goals and supplying four assists, and subsequently leaving Liverpool considering paying his €40m (£34m) release clause.

Such similar returns indeed stand out among the aforementioned pair, but a deeper dive into their styles reveals that Eze could produce every bit the 'magic' that Veiga could, with the 21-year-old Spaniard being called a "wonderful talent" by journalist Josh Bunting.

eberechi-eze-crystal-palace-liverpool-transfer-premier-league

As per FBref, Eze ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for rate of non-penalty goals, the top 6% for shot-creating actions, the top 16% for progressive carries and the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90.

Veiga, comparatively, ranks among the top 1% for rate of non-penalty goals, the top 24% for shot-creating actions, and the top 12% for progressive carries and successful take-ons per 90.

The 24-year-old Eagle would indeed be a worthy alternative to Veiga, and Klopp must now choose carefully as he charts the best route to success on Merseyside.

India's attorney general wants two Lodha Committee recommendations revoked

The attorney general of India has asked the Supreme Court to revoke its order that required the BCCI to implement a two specific recommendations of the Lodha Committee

Nagraj Gollapudi20-Jan-20171:58

Ugra: Attorney general’s intervention a sign of government backing BCCI

The attorney general of India, Mukul Rohatgi, has asked the Supreme Court to revoke two specific recommendations made by the Lodha Committee in its report that was approved in the court’s order on July 18 last year.Rohatgi was representing three government-run organisations – Railways, Services and the All India Universities – whose full member status in the BCCI was to be downgraded to associate level according to the Lodha Committee recommendations. The most significant consequence of the recommendation was that all three members would lose voting rights at BCCI elections. The attorney general confirmed this was the first time the Indian government was intervening in the 2013 IPL corruption case, which began in August 2013. Rohatgi also said he had met former BCCI president Anurag Thakur, who had been removed from office by a Supreme Court order on January 2, earlier this week but said they were meeting as friends and did not discuss the BCCI-Lodha case.”They were full members with voting rights. That status has been downgraded to associate members without voting rights,” Rohatgi told ESPNcricinfo. “How could the Supreme Court downgrade our full membership in BCCI without issuing notice to us first?”Rohatgi told the court the three organisations had been big contributors to Indian cricket – employing many players – and so the court should reconsider its decision. “What right does the apex court have to downgrade them as BCCI (full) members?” he asked the three-judge bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra, AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud.Rohatgi also challenged the Lodha Committee recommendation that said no serving minister or civil servant could be an office-bearer of the BCCI or state association. “”Why can’t the Railway minister become an office-bearer?” Rohatgi asked.”I am asking for a recall of your orders. Lodha Committee was appointed by this court to punish those found guilty in the IPL match-fixing,” Rohatgi said according to the . “Then you told them to reform cricket … when has the court become a reformist body?”Justice Misra, while acknowledging Rohatgi’s concerns, said the court would consider the attorney general’s requests. “We are not shying away from the legal issues. They are interesting,” Justice Misra said. “We will have a debate.”The intervention of the attorney general took place at a time when the bench of judges hearing the case has changed in composition and is vastly different from the bench that had heard the case for over a year. The previous bench, led by the former Chief Justice of India TS Thakur, had ordered the formation of the Lodha committee to recommend reforms within the BCCI and then ordered the implementation of the reforms. The current bench is made up of Justice Dipak Mishra, who is in line to become the next Chief Justice of India at the end of August, DY Chandrachud and AM Khanwilkar, who began hearing the case from October 2016.The Lodha Committee was formed in January 2015 to determine appropriate punishments for some of the officials involved in the 2013 IPL corruption scandal, and also to propose changes to streamline the BCCI, reform its functioning, prevent sporting fraud and conflict of interest. In January 2016, the committee released its report, which recommended an exhaustive overhaul of the BCCI’s governance and administrative structures. On July 18, the Supreme Court of India approved the majority of the recommendations and directed the Lodha Committee to supervise the BCCI’s implementations of the same. However, despite the Lodha Committee laying out timelines and other directives, the board did not cooperate because it said that its state associations objected to the recommendations. This impasse eventually led to the Supreme Court removing Thakur and Shirke from office on January 2, 2017.

Spurs Slammed For Error Ahead Of "Absolutely Massive" Period

Tottenham Hotspur's failure to appoint a director of football ahead of their pre-season tour to Australia is a concern, podcaster Chris Cowlin has claimed.

What's going on at Tottenham?

Spurs are still facing a difficult period off the pitch, as despite finding a manager in Ange Postecoglou, a director of football is yet to be appointed to replace Fabio Paratici, and no signings have been made in the transfer window.

A dismal campaign saw Spurs finish in eighth place, and Paratici was dismissed from his role after receiving a ban from football for his involvement in illicit activities during his time at Juventus.

The lack of director means that there may be difficulties operating in the transfer market without a recruitment strategy in place, and with just a few weeks to go until pre-season, this comes at quite a concern for Spurs.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Cowlin bemoaned the lack of progress in appointing a director, whilst also acknowledging the other major changes taking place around the club.

"There are so many players, this is what I mean about this rebuild, this is absolutely massive. This is a huge job. And it does slightly worry me that we're off to Australia in three weeks for the preseason tour and we don't have a director of football," he stated.

"Of course there's been a restructure as well in the academy. Although the academy won two cups at the end of the season, the under 17 and 18s, there's been a complete restructure there.

"That's going to be interesting, Yaya Toure and Dean Rastrick recently leaving, and Greta Stevenson on the verge of leaving. So that's a big thing."

How important is a director of football for Spurs?

Despite the way it ended, Paratici's spell at Spurs saw him use his expertise to help recruit Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus, and both signings were instrumental as Spurs beat rivals Arsenal to a top four spot in 2022.

With a director of football in place, the club can form a strategy about the types of players they bring in, as well as hiring managers to build upon a structure already in place.

Tottenham's Dejan Kulusevski

Spurs have been catastrophic when hiring managers in recent years, with the likes of Conte, Nuno Espirito Santo and Jose Mourinho all failing to make an impact, with no long-term plan in place of how to replace them.

Hiring a director as soon as possible will be beneficial for Postecoglou's aims in the transfer market, and a long-term strategy in recruitment and sales could help Spurs recover from their slump, both on and off the pitch.

Taylor talked about as one of the greats – Hesson

Even though Mike Hesson avoided talking about Ross Taylor’s position in the T20 team, the New Zealand coach spoke highly of Taylor as an ODI batsman

Andrew McGlashan23-Feb-2017

New Zealand coach Mike Hesson is unsure about Ross Taylor’s future as a T20 cricketer, but he has no doubt that the batsman should be considered one of their greats in the 50-over game.Taylor became New Zealand’s leading ODI century-maker with his 17th hundred in Christchurch and completed a unique set of centuries against all Full Member teams. He also became the fourth and quickest New Zealander to score 6000 ODI runs. When asked if Taylor gets the recognition he deserves, Hesson said: “I think he’s always talked about as one of the greats. His record suggests he should be seen in that light. We are all delighted Ross has the record he deserves.”Hesson, however, refused to be drawn into any debate over Taylor’s T20 position and whether the 32-year-old batsman had a point to prove following his omission from the one-off match against South Africa.”I think Ross always wants to put a big score out there, which is why he’s so valuable for us in one-day cricket,” Hesson said. “I’ve suggested all the way along that Ross is one of the first picked in one-day cricket, as he rightly should be. Yesterday was another example of how good he is in this format. In the next 12 months we’ve got loads of one-day cricket and that’s our priority.”Although the major partnership in New Zealand’s 289 for 4 was the 123 added by Taylor and James Neesham for the fifth wicket, Hesson said it was the earlier work that proved crucial after New Zealand were put in to bat. Taylor and Kane Williamson strung a third-wicket partnership of 104 runs – their 11th century stand in ODIs – which led former captain Brendon McCullum to tweet they are the “best 3/4 punch in World cricket!” – a regular comment during his international days.”I thought it was a clinical batting performance from the whole group,” Hesson said. “Having got chucked in, it was quite a soft surface, so in the first hour Dean [Brownlie] and Kane did an excellent job; then Kane and Ross. Ross and James [Neesham] at the end were outstanding.”Next month, Taylor will have the chance to improve on a disappointing Test record against South Africa. He averages 24.22 from seven matches, without a half-century, which is his poorest return against any opposition. Only South Africa and Bangladesh, against whom he made 60 and 77 last month, are missing from his Test century list.”A Test hundred against South Africa is something he’s aware of and would like to get, and we’d certainly like to see that in the next month or so,” Hesson said. “But we’ve also got to celebrate how good he was yesterday.”
