Sky Sports: Man Utd Eye ‘Dangerous’ £69m Antony Upgrade

Manchester United are reportedly among the suitors for Bayer Leverkusen sensation, Moussa Diaby, as manager Erik ten Hag seeks to strengthen his forward line this summer.

What's the latest on Diaby to Man United?

According to Sky Germany reporter, Florian Plettenberg, the Red Devils – as well as top-four rivals Newcastle United – are said to be keeping tabs on the 23-year-old, with the explosive forward valued at around €80m (£69m) by the Bundesliga outfit.

Writing on Twitter, the transfer insider revealed: "News Diaby: He‘s on the list of NUFC but understand that it was not advanced in the last months.

"Man Utd is monitoring his situation instead and confirmed. Next steps depend on the club‘s ownership. Bayer‘s price valuation between €70-80m. Contract until 2025. Key player for Alonso."

Who could Diaby replace at Man United?

The Old Trafford outfit only recently moved to bolster their options on the flank with the £86m capture of Antony from Ajax last summer, with the Brazilian trickster having followed Ten Hag to Manchester.

While the 23-year-old still has ample time to truly catch fire, it has been a season of mixed fortunes thus far, with the fleet-footed enigma having scored just four goals and provided only two assists in the Premier League to date, albeit while netting important goals in the Europa League against both Barcelona and Real Betis.

As talkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor previously stated, the £200k-per-week dynamo can be "frustrating" at times due to lack of directness, with The Athletic's Carl Anka stating at the start of the season that the forward will "need to work on his consistency".

Man United's Antony

Amid what has been a somewhat underwhelming debut campaign at the Theatre of Dreams for Antony, the 5 foot 9 ace could potentially find himself ousted by the arrival of Diaby, with the latter man having been in far more impressive form in Germany of late.

The former Paris Saint-Germain starlet – who has been previously hailed as "dangerous" by Freiburg's Nils Pedersen – has remarkably racked up 14 goals and 11 assists in 47 games across all fronts this season, having sparkled from his wide berth.

Much like Antony, the young Frenchman appears to be at his brilliant best when cutting in onto his favoured left foot from the right flank, with 17 of his goal involvements having come in that starting berth this term.

The Leverkusen appears particularly superior with regard to his creative prowess, having created 14 big chances in the Bundesliga this season and averaged 1.8 key passes per game, while the current United man, by contrast, has created only two big chances and averaged just 1.2 key passes per game.

Such a rampant hot streak for Diaby this season has also not been a mere anomaly, with the ten-cap ace having consistently delivered the goods over the years, boasting a standout tally of 97 goals and assists in 171 games for his current side to date.

While replicating that feat in the Premier League may prove a greater test, the £32k-per-week speedster has certainly done enough to warrant the interest from top-flight clubs, with Ten Hag potentially set to find a swift upgrade on the polarising Antony this summer.

West Ham In The Race To Sign £40k-A-Week Attacker

West Ham are one of several clubs believed to be keen on signing Liverpool youngster Fabio Carvalho this summer.

Could Carvalho leave Liverpool this summer?

The Reds experienced a poor 2022/23 season by their recent high standards, finishing fifth in the Premier League, with too many players struggling to find their best form. One player who joined last summer was Carvalho, who made the move from Fulham after playing a key role in helping them achieve promotion to the top flight, registering 18 goal contributions (10 goals and eight assists) in the Championship.

The £40,000-a-week attacking midfielder has really struggled to make his mark at Anfield to date, however, starting just four league games and scoring twice in 13 appearances in the competition overall. It has become increasingly clear that he has a lot of work to do if he is to make it at Liverpool, and it could even be that he is moved on this summer.

Whether that is on loan or permanently remains to be seen, but as things stand, it would be a surprise if he was part of the Reds' first-team plans next season. With West Ham eyeing reinforcements in the summer, it could be that the 20-year-old is a target for the Hammers in the coming months.

Liverpool midfielder Fabio Carvalho.

Are West Ham keen on move for Carvalho?

According to Football Insider, the "revelation" that Liverpool could allow Carvalho to leave on loan this summer has alerted a number of Premier League clubs, with West Ham mentioned as one of the clubs who are keen.

Brentford and Burnley are also believed to be "interested" in signing him, although the player himself "harbours concerns over whether he would earn regular minutes during a temporary stay at any of those clubs". Therefore, a move abroad could be a "more appealing next step" for Carvalho, with an unnamed foreign club showing an interest in him.

The Liverpool man could be a shrewd signing by West Ham if they get a deal over the line this summer, with a loan move arguably the best option, should he struggle to make the grade in east London.

Carvalho has been described as "unbelievable" by Reds manager Jurgen Klopp, which says a lot about his ability, and he is capable of excelling in a central attacking midifeld role or out wide, with such versatility making him a real asset, in terms of squad depth.

There hasn't been enough end product from those attacking areas at West Ham this season, with Jarrod Bowen topping the league scoring charts with six goals and five assists, so Carvalho could bolster that area, as the Hammers try to improve on a fairly disappointing total of 42 goals in 38 matches.

Simmons sacked as West Indies coach

Simmons sacked as West Indies coach

West Indies coach Phil Simmons has been sacked due to “differences in culture and strategic approach”, the WICB has confirmed.Simmons, who moved into the role after the 2015 World Cup following a spell with Ireland, was informed about the termination of his contract on Tuesday by WICB chief executive Michael Muirhead shortly before the West Indies T20 squad was due to fly to the UAE to play Pakistan. The sacking came just six months after West Indies had won the World T20 in India.Sammy’s reaction on Facebook

“If the blind leads the blind they are bound to fall in a pit,” former West Indies captain Darren Sammy said. He also called the WICB’s recent symposium of players and administrators in Florida a “publicity stunt”.
“So after the publicity stunt in Fort Lauderdale the first so call plan to move West Indies Cricket forward is to fire the coach just two days before a tour… just prove to me what I already knew. If the blind leads the blind they are bound to fall in a pit.”

For the Pakistan series, the WICB said the team would be under the supervision of former West Indies fast bowler Joel Garner, who is the team manager. He will work alongside the pair of assistant coaches Henderson Springer and Roddy Estwick.Despite the sudden nature of the announcement, the WICB said the decision to drop Simmons was taken at the board of directors meeting last weekend. The board confirmed the news of Simmons’ departure shortly after it was revealed by ESPNcricinfo. As for the reason behind the sacking, the WICB statement did not go into specifics. “In recent times, based on the public pronouncements of the coach and the approach internally, we have identified differences in culture and strategic approach. The WICB would therefore like to thank the coach for his contribution and wishes him the best in his future endeavours.”The lack of common ground between the parties had been clear for some time. Simmons’ journey as West Indies coach was never smooth once he made his thoughts public soon after not being allowed to pick what he felt was the best squad for the ODI series in Sri Lanka last year. Consequently the WICB suspended him before allowing him back to his role once both parties resolved to sort out matters amicably. In September last year, when the issue of selection reared its head again, Simmons had said: “The disappointing fact is that you can lose 3-2 in a vote-off but there is too much interference from outside in the selection of the ODI squad and it’s disappointing for me to know that in any aspect of life … [people would use] their position to get people into a squad; or in this case, get people left out of a squad. It is wrong and I don’t like it and that is my beef with the selection of the ODI team.”His reinstatement, the WICB said, was “conditioned upon” two criteria: “issuance to him of a letter of reprimand for his inappropriate public comments”, and his “making a public apology to the WICB and persons whom he may have offended.”The recent home Test series against India finished in a 2-0 defeat and under Simmons, West Indies won only one of 14 Tests, though that win was enough to draw a series against England last year. They showed glimpses of promise against India but ultimately fell to two heavy defeats – three of the nine losses while Simmons was coach were by an innings, two more by nine wickets, and two by more than 150 runs.It was suggested that former West Indies captain and current Kent coach Jimmy Adams was the replacement the WICB wanted, but sources close to Adams told ESPNcricinfo he was not interested. In less than six months since West Indies won their second World T20 title, the WICB has parted ways with three influential members of the team management, with Simmons following the pair of former captain Darren Sammy and bowling consultant Curtly Ambrose.Immediately after the World T20, the WICB relieved Ambrose from his role, which caught him by surprise. Then ahead of the two T20Is against India in Florida, the new selection panel led by Courtney Browne decided to remove Sammy as captain and replace him with Carlos Brathwaite.

Immense Stokes regains control for England

Ben Stokes produced a day of all-round dominance to rival anything produced by an England player in the subcontinent, to drag his side into the ascendancy in a thrilling first Test against Bangladesh at Chittagong

The Report by Andrew Miller22-Oct-2016England 293 and 228 for 8 (Stokes 85, Bairstow 47, Shakib 5-79) lead Bangladesh 248 (Tamim 78, Mushfiqur 48, Stokes 4-26) by 273 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsBen Stokes produced a day of all-round dominance to rival anything produced by an England player in the subcontinent, to drag his side – wicket by wicket, run by run – into the ascendancy in a thrilling first Test against Bangladesh at Chittagong. With four crucial wickets in a supreme display of reverse-swing bowling in Bangladesh’s first innings, followed by a technically formidable 85 from 151 balls in England’s second, Stokes twice hauled England back from the point of no return, and in so doing, sapped the spirit of a Bangladesh side that had made much of the running in the first two days of the contest.By the close, England had recovered from a ropey 64 for 5 in their second innings to reach the close on 228 for 8 – an overall lead of 273 – with Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes once again demonstrating the depth of England’s batting resources in a comfortable ninth-wicket stand. However, with the second new ball looming within four overs of the resumption, the vagaries of the pitch are sure to be revealed once again when Bangladesh’s spinners are armed with a hard new cherry, which in turn will reaffirm the magnificence of Stokes’ performance. The ball was in its 19th over when Stokes began his vigil, with men around the bat and England in some strife after the loss of four wickets for 20 runs in the space of ten overs either side of lunch. But, in a doughty display of patience and controlled aggression, Stokes demonstrated both maturity and the fruits of his own hard graft in the nets, as he played largely off the back foot to give himself time to react to whatever came his way.Aside from one early sweep for six over square leg off Taijul Islam, it wasn’t until the final session that Stokes unfurled his more belligerent strokes, as he began to warm to the lessening bite of the spinners to crunch six fours and two more sixes in a stay that spanned 46 overs. The second of his sixes, again off Taijul, was hoisted high over midwicket to bring up a 102-ball fifty.Jonny Bairstow was his principal ally in a sixth-wicket stand of 127, during which time Bairstow went past Andy Flower’s record for the most runs by a wicketkeeper in a calendar year. He finally chopped on for 47 to give Kamrul Islam Rabbi his maiden Test wicket – a rare success for Bangladesh’s seamers who contributed 11 overs all told and none before the 40th over – and Stokes followed three overs later to give Shakib Al Hasan the fourth wicket of a fighting haul of 5 for 79.However, as Stokes departed to huge acclaim from his team-mates, it was clear that he had already carried the destiny of this match beyond any reasonable doubt. Bangladesh cannot be entirely ruled out, of course, but in what is already a stiff fourth-innings requirement, it will require a performance of at least equal skill and resolve if they are to secure a win that would surely count as their greatest Test victory. To devalue Stokes’ efforts by commenting on the identity of his opponents would do a disservice to both parties. Bangladesh may have lost all eight of their previous Tests against England, but much like Sri Lanka in the early 1990s, there comes a point when past history counts for little and teams deserve to be judged on the here and now.Ben Stokes followed his wickets with a vital innings•AFP

And for two days of absorbing, and very traditional, subcontinental cricket, it had been Bangladesh putting in all of the inspirational performances – from Mehedi Hasan’s six-wicket debut, to Tamim Iqbal’s cool-headed 78. England started the third day with a lead of 73 and five Bangladesh wickets still to claim, no easy task given the listlessness of their spinners when armed with the soft old ball. It was clear that a lead of any description on this surface would be critical to either side, so Stokes made it his duty to be the man that England needed.Their day did, however, begin with a gift-wrapped opening wicket. His later wickets atoned for the misjudgement to a degree but, as their last remaining senior batsman, Shakib’s decision to gallop down the pitch to Moeen Ali’s second delivery of the morning was an aberration. He was stumped by three yards to depart for 31, and when the nightwatchman Shafiul Islam slogged an Adil Rashid legbreak to mid-on for 2, the door was flapping open for Stokes to kick through the tail.He had already made arguably the key incision of the match by extracting Mushfiqur Rahim for 48 on the second evening and, with the ball moving both ways seemingly at will, from over and round the wicket, Stokes was threatening left- and right-handers alike on both sides of the bat – as well as flush on the helmet, when he pinned the debutant Sabbir Rahman with a pinpoint bouncer. By the time he plucked out Rabbi’s off stump with a perfect inswinger, he had completed innings figures of 4 for 26 in 14 overs, including 4 for 10 in his last ten.By lunch, however, the pricelessness of England’s 45-run lead had become all too apparent, as Bangladesh’s spinners once again surged to the fore, armed with the hard new ball that seemed at times to detonate from the crumbling surface. In the space of eight deliveries, England lost both of their most acclaimed players of spin, as Alastair Cook was lured into a poke to slip off Mehedi before Joe Root – always eager to rotate the strike – dropped to one knee and was pinned lbw by Shakib. And right on the stroke of lunch, England lost their third wicket for two runs in the space of 20 balls, as Ben Duckett lobbed a simple chance off Shakib to short leg.Stokes’ appearance followed soon after the resumption when Gary Ballance, who had never looked comfortable as Bangladesh cramped his pads with a tight leg-stump line, swept firmly into Imrul Kayes’ midriff at leg slip for 9, and though Moeen survived his sixth TV referral of the match after a catch to short leg had been deflected off the fielder’s helmet, he too fell on the sweep to leave the fate of the game hanging on England’s redoubtable middle order. Not for the first time in recent months, they responded to the challenge.

Chelsea Could Finally Replace Courtois With £52m ‘Superstar’

A massive overhaul is on the horizon at Chelsea.

The majority of the squad that was part of that beautifully unlikely 2021 Champions League triumph has already left or is on the verge of departure as the club enters a fresh era under the new ownership.

However, there is still much work to be done for the Blues board, as their 12th-placed Premier League finish is a significant failure in the strategy thus far, and it must be rectified.

After the disastrous Graham Potter tenure, the club will be hoping that the incoming Mauricio Pochettino can save them from the depths of despair.

One position the Argentine is reportedly keen on upgrading is the goalkeeper with Andre Onana has having been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

What’s the latest on Andre Onana to Chelsea?

According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Inter Milan are showing “great interest” in Ruben Loftus-Cheek and the Blues are hoping that Andre Onana can be included as part of a potential deal.

AC Milan had been the favourites to sign the Englishman, but Technical Director Paolo Maldini’s sudden sacking has thrown this transfer into uncertainty.

Pochettino is reportedly a fan of Onana, who is valued at around €60m (£52m) by his current employers, but Loftus-Cheek is seen as a €20m (£17m) asset that can soften the expense of this deal.

Who can Andre Onana emulate at Chelsea?

Truthfully, the West Londoners are still yet to replace the indomitable Thibaut Courtois, who unceremoniously left for Real Madrid in 2018.

In four seasons in the English capital, the 6 foot 7 adonis made 154 appearances, conceding just 152 goals and keeping 58 clean sheets.

Thibaut Courtois Chelsea

During this period, he displaced club legend Petr Cech as first-choice goalkeeper, won two Premier League titles and the Golden Glove once.

His shot-stopping ability, presence, and authority are three invaluable traits that Kepa Arrizabalaga and Eduoard Mendy have failed to effectively emulate, with the pair having made three and four errors leading to goals respectively in their Premier League careers.

Meanwhile, this term, Onana has kept 19 clean sheets in 40 appearances across all competitions and has started every game for the Milanese Giants in their commendable run to the Champions League final, where they face Manchester City in Istanbul on Saturday evening.

The former Ajax star has evolved into one of the continent’s most reliable shot-stoopers, as he ranks in the best 12% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for save percentage (76.5%) per 90, as well as the top 7% for clean sheet percentage (44.4%) per 90, according to FBref.

Lauded as a “superstar” by UEFA journalist Ome Akatugba, Onana could finally be the answer to an issue that has plagued Chelsea for years.

Mehedi's 12 seals historic win over England

Bangladesh claimed ten wickets in an electric final session to secure an historic first Test victory over England and a 1-1 share of the series

The Report by Alan Gardner30-Oct-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsBangladesh claimed ten wickets in an electric final session to secure an historic first Test victory over England and a 1-1 share of the series. That it came after England’s openers had put on a century stand was the final twist in a remarkable match and only heightened the sense of their achievement. The crowning moment was delivered by the teenager Mehedi Hasan, who finished with another six-wicket haul, 12 in the match and the best figures by a Bangladeshi to spark scenes of jubilation at Mirpur. The result provided atonement after Bangladesh had gone so close in Chittagong, finally giving them a win over one of the major Test nations: in 94 matches previously they had only beaten West Indies and Zimbabwe. It also posed fresh questions for England, who went from 100 for 0 to 164 all out in 22.3 mesmeric overs as Mehedi and Shakib Al Hasan claimed all ten between them.At tea, England had edged the equation back in their favour, knocking the requirement from 273 down to a seemingly more manageable 173 thanks to their best opening partnership of the tour. But from the very first delivery after the interval, Mehedi speared the ball into Ben Duckett’s stumps and England’s dream start became a waking nightmare against spin, a Halloween horror show in which every wicket was greeted with ghoulish glee by the Mirpur crowd.Moments later Joe Root, already zombified by illness, stumbled from the field after a two-ball 1 and although Alastair Cook followed Duckett in reaching fifty, England were about to enter a death spiral. From 122 for 2, Bangladesh claimed 4 for 15 in 38 balls, England’s middle-order guts ripped out as Mehedi completed a ten-wicket haul in only his second Test. After Duckett and Cook, only Ben Stokes managed double-figures.Gary Ballance’s tortured series ended with a misbegotten leading edge to mid-off and Moeen Ali was lbw to Mehedi in the same over but Bangladesh must have truly believed when Cook popped a catch to silly point – a superb take from Mominul Haque standing as close to the cut strip as he dared – to leave England five down. The sense of grievance Bangladesh apparently felt after Cook had overturned an lbw decision off Mehedi a few overs before, Hawk-Eye projecting the ball to be missing leg stump, was immediately forgotten. From that point, the ending was inevitable – it was merely a question of when. Jonny Bairstow became Mehedi’s 11th victim when an inside edge ballooned to leg slip and although Stokes attempted to hold back the tide, smiting Mehedi for a towering, defiant six, he was bowled playing inside the line of a delivery from Shakib, who claimed three in four balls to put Bangladesh on the brink of a victory that had repeatedly threatened to squirm from their grasp.Few could have foreseen quite such a dramatic finish at the start of the day. Having been well placed on 152 for 3 overnight, Bangladesh’s batsmen resolved to play positively and they succeeded in almost doubling their score. Stokes and Adil Rashid claimed six of the seven wickets to fall, keeping the target below 300, but 273 was still significantly more than England had previously achieved in Asia – coincidentally their 2010 pursuit of 209 at Mirpur, which was also the record on the ground. They were given the perfect start, however. Cook and his latest partner had a previous best of 26 together and, given England’s propensity to go from one to three down (or, in this case, all out) in short order, it was a timely improvement. Duckett’s penchant for the reverse-sweep was well known in domestic circles but he unwrapped it for the citizens of Dhaka in the fourth over of the innings, striking back-to-back boundaries off Shakib. There were one or two misjudgements, a top edge from a cut bursting through the hands of slip, while Kamrul Islam Rabbi could not get his hands under a wild slice running in from cover, but living dangerously was at least living. Duckett went to his maiden Test fifty, from just 61 deliveries, with a swept four and he brought up the hundred with a fierce pull of Mehedi’s next ball to further quieten a nervous crowd – at least until the resumption after tea.A chaotic morning session had seen four wickets, as many catches go down, a couple of reviews wasted and 116 runs added to the Bangladesh total. No batsman was able to survive for long but they successfully staved off the outright collapse England had hoped for, as tempers began to fray.Stokes was at the centre of trying to lift England but his approach seemed to draw comment from the umpires, who approached Cook to try and calm things down. Stokes was unhappy at Sabbir Rahman advancing down the pitch during a brisk seventh-wicket partnership that repelled England once again and frustrations mounted after they lost their second review seeking a caught-behind decision against Bangladesh’s No. 7, who was eventually lbw to Rashid from the last ball before lunch.England created chances from the outset but Bangladesh’s batsmen kept pushing the scoreboard on. Imrul Kayes swept and nudged while the more adventurous Shakib rode his luck to add 48 together inside the first hour and although the wickets did eventually come, England’s hopes of running through the middle- and lower-order for a second time in the match were stilled.Imrul had two let-offs before finally falling for 78. In the sixth over of the morning, on 67, a leg-side flick off Zafar Ansari went quickly to the right of Cook at leg slip and the England captain could only palm it away; then on 74, a simpler chance off the bowling of Moeen was put down by Root, going one-handed to his right at slip. The Bangladesh opener fell shortly after, lbw to Moeen attempting to sweep, and Shakib might have been stumped in the following over, charging at Ansari, only for the ball to explode off the pitch and clear Bairstow’s right shoulder. Ansari should certainly have had Shakib’s wicket on 23 when a slog-sweep picked out Duckett at deep midwicket but he made a complete hash of the catch and the same bowler then saw Mushfiqur survive a mistimed chip to Steven Finn running back at mid-off.England’s use of technology was also erratic, failing with one DRS attempt against Mushfiqur – Ansari’s delivery pitching outside leg – but opting not to review a pair of lbw appeals from Moeen’s bowling, once each against Shakib and Mushfiqur, that would likely have been overturned.Shakib’s innings was cut short on 41 as Rashid ripped a legbreak in from round the wicket and Stokes had Mushfiqur taken at slip in the following over but by then the lead was above 200 and England’s task on a surface that continued to assist spin bowling was looking a daunting one. This time, Bangladesh would not let them off the hook.

Liverpool Handed Transfer Demand After Mac Allister Signing

Liverpool should focus on bringing in two more midfielders whose main attributes are their dynamism and athleticism according to Redmen TV presenter Ste Hoare.

The club recently confirmed the signing of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion, and will now push to bolster the midfield further ahead of the next campaign.

Liverpool transfer news – midfielders

Liverpool is set for a major midfield overhaul after a disappointing season which resulted in Europa League football for the first time in eight seasons.

The club has already completed the signing of Mac Allister on a five-year deal for an undisclosed fee, but reports state the fee is around £35m as the Reds activated a clause in the Argentines contract.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool is set for talks with the agents of Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram and Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Manu Kone following the completion of the Mac Allister transfer.

There have also been reports on the Red's interest in Southampton's Romeo Lavia, Bayern Munich's Ryan Gravenberch and Celta Vigo's Gabri Veiga.

It is clear based on the reports and rumors that the Merseyside-based outfit is targeting young midfielders who can come into the current squad and play their part whilst also having the potential to grow into a regular starter.

What does Hoare think of Liverpool's midfield situation?

When asked on the midfield situation, Hoare told Football FanCast: "In terms of who is next, I think they probably need two more midfielders.

"The one thing Mac Allister doesn’t offer that we are probably still in need of is more dynamism and athleticism. He’s a very good player, and he puts in a lot of work, but I think Liverpool probably lacks a bit of physicality still in the midfield, and we saw that at times last season."

Who should Liverpool sign for midfield?

As the Redmen TV presenter stated, Liverpool needs to bring in midfielders that offer more "dynamism" and "athleticism" than the current options at the club, and both Thuram and Kone fit those descriptions.

The 22-year-old from Nice made 35 appearances in Ligue 1, scoring two and assisting four en route to averaging a rating of 6.91 according to WhoScored.

The 6 foot 4 midfielder is a fantastic creative force, averaging 0.18 xAG as well as 3.25 progressive carries and 1.63 successful take-ons per 90, which ranks him alongside some of the best midfielders in Europe, according to FBref.

Kone is a more defensively dynamic option, with the man who was dubbed a "one-man army" making 30 appearances for his club last season and averaging a rating of 6.81 according to WhoScored. The French youth international averages 2.55 tackles per 90 as well as 1.10 interceptions per 90 showcasing his defensive prowess, as per FBref.

If Liverpool are able to bring in both French youngsters, their midfield will arguably be as dynamic and athletic as ever.
